this was the first maiden album i heard, at around 14 and loved it instantly. its not my favorite record by them now, but still holds a very special place

The person who did the artwork for that Manowar album is Ken Landgraf, one of my favorite obscure comic book artists.

Great discussion. Last nearly-flawless Iron Maiden album IMHO, although I find the sound a bit thin at times. I think I over-played it back in the day, though, it's been years since I re-visited it...

    Great discussion, as always.
Steve Harris dislikes the middle-section as well but I have no problems here. "Losfer" and "Blade" flow nicely and for me, the overall flow is more important than every track being an alltime-classic. Nothing is as flat here as "Eat Me Alive".
And as english not being my mother tongue, I don't care about kitchens though I initially thought this to be about Vietnam as well, haha. With their storyteller-approach, they don't have to sing about Metal, Sex and Satan, something, the rest of the scene was doing back then. Later, european Metal adopted that approach.
For '84, the overall sound is surprisingly dry, but, and that's a minor quibble from me, not quite as atmospheric as the predecessor and the successor.
And, for blasphemy's sake, "Rhyme" could have been trimmed A LITTLE BIT as the verses get a little repetetive for me though that's the style of old shantys and epics.
    Cheers!

About the main riff in 2 Minutes to Midnight, I don't think it's the same riff in any of these songs. This video seems to share your opinion, Mike. ruclips.net/video/ATwfcGRvO2k/видео.html
But, personally, I think it's more a standard rhythmic pattern of heavy metal than identical riffs.

I agree. I was kind of playing Devil's Advocate a little bit here. Cheers!
