Don Quixote is the literary definition of a fever dream, it’s such an incredible experience to read. It’s fascinating how Oda draws the parallels between Doflamingo and Don Quixote, but twists them into nightmares.
It's even more than that. It's LITERATURE in its truest form. Just like with One Piece, I could fangirl about it for days.
Signed, a Hispanic Philologist 😂
And the animated definition of a fever dream is FLCL
The thing I find most compelling about Doffy is that as much as no character in the story sees how he really feels about anything, us as readers do see that he feels remorse and pain and empathy. But only when he is alone, and only really for his brother.
I think because Rosinante was both his blood brother and lived through the same circumstances that he had, he not only understands his trauma to T, but can’t dismiss his pain as something that’s ‘supposed to be there’ due to his lineage. Doflamingo always puts himself first, but he obviously mourned all of his family and was upset that he ‘had’ to kill two of them himself. In the modern world though, like you said, the closest he comes to showing any of these feelings is mocking Corazon’s death in from of Law to upset him. Doflamingo is a cold blooded killer, terrorist, and more- but the parts of him that make him human instead of a ‘heavenly demon’ make him so darn interesting
I’d say that these kind of videos are needed, Merphy. This adds another layer to Oda’s manga that shows that his work has more depth and nuances than people realizes and it aids in showcasing Oda’s strength as an author which isn’t highlighted as often as it should in the fandom in my opinion. As other people have mentioned, this video series would help you stand out amongst other One Piece creators. I look forward to the next installment of this series!
It also helps broaden the horizons of the one piece fanbase when they learn about more of the real world fictions that guide Oda's hands. It's insightful and informative
Based on the in depth narrative and source explorations, discussions and arguments I've seen within most of the dedicated One Piece forums over the last fifteen years, I would say many MANY One Piece fans are more aware than you would think of this stuff 😂 some are practically walking the line between scholar and conspiracy theorist 😅
Not to say these videos aren't heavily appreciated, it's a great idea for a RUclips One Piece series which you don't really see, it's true. But never underestimate a fandom to know this stuff already, particularly this one :L
❤
That said i feel bad for other series. One piece deserves it, I'm a fan, but people goat oda for everything normal people do. Foreshadowing from chapter 1 OMGOSH ODA IS THE BEST EVER. fair since many don't but I know a lot of authors who get canceled, they want to do that but they didn't grow up in that era. Jujutsu kaisen is the same, they say its trash for fast plot but it didn't have the opportunity to do slow pace. Early one piece wasn't slow though...i wonder when oda decided I'm set lol. Off topic. JJK figured out a way to beat old heads in the industry which is impressive...even if people hate it. Think about it, today ADHD is on the rise, people don't want anything but the best, people hate anything they don't like and drop it instantly, JJK some how maneuvered past that. Back in one piece days it was us just enjoying a story. Now episode 1 tell me the entire plot or I quit...type of stuff. Overrated they didn't do any thing I didn't see before in 40 years so its trash.
I think it's crazy Oda has time to learn about so many things in the world while writing his own story for over 27 years of his life. On deadlines. Wild.
Both Doflamingo and Don Quixote are mad men. They also have their opposites; the novel Don Quixote has that impossible dream that he would not let anyone stop him just like Rosinante/Corazon in One Piece (Rosinante is the name of Don Quixote's horse in the novel) . Doflamingo on the other hand loves to destroy everyone's dream.
Yes, I agree with that as well 👍💪👊
I just realized DonQuixote was beaten by a kid from WINDMILL village omg
WHO CAN BLOW HIMSELF UP INTO A GIANT!!!!!
@@merphynapier42Idk if that was intentional
This is such a unique idea for One Piece content.
Ya we're going to need more and feel free to make them an hour long, I was fascinated the moment you mentioned Don Quixotes delusions of grandeur (think back to that image of child Doffy standing with his back turned and pica, trebol, and snot dude bowing down which mimiced the gorosei bowing to imu) .
Agreed. Furthermore -- I appreciate how Merphy can discuss what "Oda pulls from" without framing it like lazy or dishonest writing on Oda's part, because it's not.
In the next episode Merphy discusses how Enel is actually Eminem. Tune in next week!
😂
He's fast just like him
I would love more videos on Oda’s inspirations - thriller bark had so many references to horror books, there’s so many literary references in other places as well
Same this was a great video
one of the most unique things about One Piece, is how Oda made a world that can have so many themes and ideas and references incorporated in the story, yet never feel weird and out of place, like they were always part of this world and are not related to real world references.
One Piece is probably one of the largest works of fictions to have multiple genres of story-telling in it.
I love these videos. I think this is an amazing way of bridging the gap between manga and books! ❤️
Sancho is Bellamy? At least that's what I got from the whole sidekick follower esque dynamic just from what you said about him.
Creating a false reality/illusion is such a simple connection to make but so perfect!
It's insane that Oda was able to take this Novel and base an ENTIRE ARC, a charecter(including his family members i guess for cora), and parallel Don Quixote with 2 Strawhats(being Sanji and Usopp)
I definitely would love all the tiny little connections too that just adds a little more seasoning on an already perfect steak! There definitely needs to be a disection on a lot of inspirations Oda takes. We need to show people that it's MORE than just a sily pirate story... One Piece is Real!
Funniest thing about Don Quijote, it's actually auto fiction Cervantes wrote to sulk about how all his dreams of fame and greatness had went wrong-Cervantes's life was sort of a screwball comedy. And he hated people liked the damn novel. He only wrote the second part because people started to write fan fiction about the first one. Damn it! I'll have to read One Piece after all!
Yes please read One Piece! It's so much deeper than it seems. Also DQ content is cursed... look at everything poor Terry Gilliam had to go through for his film project.
Merphy going deep down the rabbit hole of One Piece namesakes is something I never knew I needed.
I feel spoiled by being able to watch this kind of videos about One Piece, not many fan bases can get content this good.
I am now realizing that Doffys dad most clearly parallels Don Quixote, great video!
Don Quijote was a formative book for me. In my country we read an abriged version of it for literature class at a very young age, and being a book nerd I jumped into reading the whole thing.
Being Latino there's a big component of sensuality, liveliness, and so much other things that people associate with my identity, but one part few talk about is the naivety and idealism that also marks us (no coincidence that our literary highlights are within magical realism and poetry). And this had a strong pull on me and in the way I was taught Don Quijote. In my heart, I kept Alonso Quijano as a hero, a rightful dreamer who refused to give up against a wrongful, cynical world.
But growing up I started to see the cracks in this way of thinking. Thanks to stories like One Piece and critical friends and booktubers like yourself, I've come to understand things have more nuance than "me right, world/system wrong".
It hasn't been easy, since this includes a lot of disillusion, but it has been for the best! Thanks a million for your videos Merphy 🌸✨
THe video is very good, and I do like her take, but personally, I also like to see Don Alonso Quijano as a hero in his own way, and his paralelisms are not just those with Doflamingo (or Sanji), but the entire biological family of Doflamingo (Rocinante, his parents, and his relative, hte one who just got murder, can't remember his name, Mjosgard, is it?). BAsically, peple that belonged to the ruling elite, or at least pretty well off, who lived in a fantasy that everybody is good and well intentioned but the mosnters they live with, this is literally Doflamingo's father delussion, that got his entiere family destroyed. He is the one that acts the most like Don Quixote, in my opinion. But also being a "quijote", or acting like Don Quixote, implyins you're willing to put other people first, or at least think of saving or helping others, even at the expenses of your own safety or well-being. This literally is a trend in the Donquixote family (not the crew). Doflamingo's fathers gave up their status as Celestial Dragons because they wanted to live the same life as ther est of the people, didn't consider themselves superior in any way, and they were so delusional they were all good, naive, and peacefull, it got them killed, just like Fon Quixote character always got beaten up. Then Corazón, who joins the marine, but remains with Doflamingo longer thn expected so he couls save Law, and later Mjowgard who openly confronted the Celestial Dragons, and ended up being murdered for that. They all follow the same trend. Even Doflamingo, despite doing what he does out of necessity and not so personal will or desire, ends up forming a crew with normal human beings. They are a family of high status lunatics who are willing to put other people first (not Doffy) even if that will get them killed of harm them in any way possible, and are completely delusional in their believes that everything's going to be alright and the world is peaceful happy flower driven. Doffy's parents were all "sure, they must be good people, only Celestial Dragons are bad people, everybody else mut be lovely", Corazón went "Doffy's my brother, sure he wouldn't kill me", and Mjosgard went "I'm a celestial dragon, they won't harm me, I'm doing the correct thing, sure they can change their ways". All dead.
I so love Don Quixote, one of the best literary stories I've ever read. Absolutely genius.
I'd like to think that the narrative pauses that are shown throughout. Don Quixote shows how the side character's stories are so much more complex and interesting yet still rooted in reality as opposed to Don quixote's. Delusions and how, although they are imaginary and fantastical, they pale in comparison to Is the actuality of life.
"En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor."
A very interesting point to Doflamingos plan to rule the world, was to become immortal with the immortality surgery, and control the worlds forces forever. Having control over the kaido by being his only plug for Smile fruits, arming countries to battle uprisings, leveraging his position as warlord, eX celestial dragon and information about their secret treasure to essentially be indispensable in the world while also staying in the shadows and watch kaidos war on the whole world. He would rule the world from the shadows for all of eternity as long as those in power need him and can’t get rid of him. Basically becoming a king, and puppet master to make his dream of watching the world burn as he stands on top reality
Awesome video idea! I love all your One Piece content and how your vast literary experience often adds another layer to them. And then you make specific videos like this that you hardly find anywhere else and that really add another layer to my own reading experience. Excited to watch!
Literary paralells with One Piece? I do love it!
I'm curious just how similar to Alice in Wonderland is the Whole Cake Island Arc. Is it mostly just an aesthetic connection, or are there themes and characters, too? The most interesting idea is that Carrot is both Alice AND The White Rabbit in one, but I don't know enough about the actual book to know if there's any truth in that
Thanks Merphy. He is a good villian...
I recommend Don Quixote (Don Quijote) and other narrative works by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Not only his narrative works are incredible among the Spanish Siglo de Oro, but these works are ancestors to today's novels. And he was so creative and funny. It's worth it.
I remember a cartoon from the 90's called Don Coyote. His sidekick was named Sancho Panda.
Doflamingo and trebol feels like don quixote and sancho
When you were talking about them , I immediately remembered the champion of evil scene, trebol is deluding doflamingo to think that he is a god , and also deluding the rest of the family and himself to worship doffy
YESSS PLEASE. This was a joy to listen to; please make more content like this, including the nitty gritty between Dressrosa and Don Quixote; I would love that so much!
You're a booktuber; you should absolutely be free to incorporate more books and novels into your One Piece content!
Also, this music SLAPS
Best book I've ever read! Just as you said, the Viola scene is basically the Dorothea scene in the novel. "A giant showed up at night in my window and stole my kingdom, he imprisoned my father..." something among those lines. It's a made up story to convince DQ to help her take her revenge on Don Fernando who took her virginity and left her for some other woman.
Awesome video! I'd love to see more like this. The first book inspiration from one piece that comes to mind is the paralelism between Impel Down and Dante's Divine Comedy, it could be interesting.
Also, about Dressrosa, the whole island is inspired in spanish cultures, from the food and flamenco dancers to Gaudi's arquitechture, and I guess the idea of the bull in the colisseum comes from bullfighting.
These kinds of videos are awesome. I love to learn about the influences on my favorite media. It's a satisfying feeling to see the parallels and inspiration in real-time, seeing Viola as an example of the Don Quixote trap, seeing the little context clues that "Hey, this scene? These people? remember that other thing? This is that! And that means..." Please do more.
I know this is such a small thing, but I love that music in the background, as a Spanish person I appreciate it, and I love Dressrosa because of its similarities to my country (Spain) and specifically the South where I'm from, and I was waiting for a video like this, tackling Don Quijote de la Mancha. Much love!
It's amazing the amount of books, movies, music, old legends, real geography and much more that Oda weaves into his story
I 100% want more of this kind of video! You're in a really unique position to be able to look at more of Odas literary influences and analyze them, so if you enjoy it as well that's just perfect. Great video!
I loved the part of the book when the King of Salamanca charged up a punch for one hour then punched Don Quijote into the moon while shouting EL PUÑO DEL REEEEEY
I love this type of video, and honestly it's something that I think not just the One Piece community, but the manga community needs as a whole.
Nooooo I wanted this to be an hour long. This kind of breakdown and analysis is so rare to see I wanted more! ❤
I absolutely love when you talk about the inspirations. Blackbeard was so cool
I love this idea so much! ... it's something I wanted to do for the longest time, searching for the literary and real life stories that Oda took inspiration from makes me appreciate the story more..
and watching a video like that from you - a literary lover- is such a joyous experience
Merphy talking about the two best pieces of fiction ever written? Hell yeah ❤
Oda's inspirations about various characters and settings would be very appreciated.
I think Oda gave Don Quixote a sort of Usopp treatment. He took things like the Pinocchio and boy who cried wolf and made a guy who dreamt and lied truly embrace those things truly.
I think Luffy's first interaction with Donquixote's crew (Bellamy) is a very good example of dreams and delusions vs so called reality
I think we well get a whole cake island comparison to some fairy tales.
@@D__634 Yup, Alice in Wonderland, Hensel and Gretel, probably more. A good analysis would be nice
Same could be said about a lot of other islands like Skypeia's Eldorado and Jack and the Beanstalk references
Not to mention Rurubu One Piece book mentions all the real world inspirations
Yes please keep looking into odas inspiration! It makes the reading so much more rewarding, and not a lot of one piece oriented content exist around that lens
Oh this is a VERY interesting take on One piece. I think a lot of fans (anime especially) miss the sheer amount of research and knowledge that goes into manga stories. I think having a guide like you revealing and exploring these literary connections could be very entertaining and educational!
First Blackbeard, now Doflamingo 😱😏😈🎃🖤
Keep up the great work with these interesting One Piece videos, Murphy😍💖✨⚡🔥
I loved this kind of thing! I would love to hear about any other inspirations from Oda's wonderful world that also reference other stories that you come across!
I’ve never read Dox Quixote but Doflamingo is my favourite One Piece character and as soon as I heard you were reading the book I was waiting for this video.
The Blackbeard video was really interesting too. I’d be interested in more of these videos!
ME TOO 😍💖👍💪👊
This is why I enjoy your coverage of One Piece. You dive into themes and connections to other medias. Loved the Blackbeard video. And super enjoyed this one. Would LOVE to see more. Whole Cake Island and the Alice in Wonderland themes. Dracule”hawkeye” Mihawk. Roanoa and Zorro. There are sooo many inspirations. Some more influential than others but its content and I’d love it.
why is that guitar hitting so hard in the background mmmm
great video Merphy
It is always nice to get depth into the magical mind of Oda's character inspirations. There are so many, and it would be nice to get more insight into the source he drew them from.
I really enjoyed seeing some more of the in-depth themes that the inspiration content drove in one piece.
Maybe it wasn't intentional;
But Luffy is from the "Windmill Village" and he was the one who defeated a man named "Don Quixote"
...again it could just be a wild coincidence.
I think you said it best: this is the perfect melding of your interests and expertise! I want deep dives on all of this! That way I learn more about literary masterpieces and have the ties to one piece explained to me by someone who has actually read the text and can explain it to me in a way I understand!
Merphy this video is so well done. I’m absolutely in love with the background music you’ve chosen
Love this kind of video! There are layers of literary allusions throughout One Piece, and it perfectly fits your niche to explore them!
For instance Cavendish was based on Jekyl and Hyde, his name is a reference to the book that people totally missed for the first few months of Dressrosa's chapter releases.
Awesome! I was waiting for a video series that goes more in depth about Oda's inspiration. I'm dying to see more videos like that😁✌️
I had a good chuckle at the idea of a spoiler warning for a 400 year old book 🤣
I appreciate you being cautious with spoilers, just find it a little funny.
Only Merph a booktuber could only do stuff like this, n i enjoy listening to it!!! Thank you
As a Spaniard and lover of both Don Quijote and One Piece I was really looking forward to this video. We might never had been able to read the second part of Don Quijote if it wasn't because someone else published a non-authorized sequel that became quite popular and Miguel de Cervantes managed to write and publish his sequel only a few months before dying. Btw you should also read Lazarillo de Tormes, another great novel from the Spanish Golden Age that essentially created the picaresque genre, very enjoyable if you love social criticism and antiheroes.
It's nice to hear these thematic connections put so succinctly, especially since I noticed precisely none of it despite having read Don Quixote and recognized the names while reading One Piece.
Then again, it has been around two decades since I read that book back in middle school, and some of those themes probably flew over my head at the time. I certainly remember the delusions, the excuses, and the cruelty, but I hadn't looked at them through the lens of the literary education I received later in life.
And I don't think I'm alone in that when it comes to a lot of world classics. There should really be more going back to the classics in higher education.
loving this "series" about our world inspirations for stuff in One Piece
Just discovered your channel not too long ago and just wanted to say, I absolutely love this kind of video series! Would love to see more like this or even spend hours just getting into the nitty gritty details of all the parallels.
This is genius, Merphy.
Hey merphy, are you going to have a deep dive into Momonosukes character as a whole? I feel like there's more to him than what i realize.
while we're at it, rest in peace, Luis "Donquixote" Sera
Very thankful for the breakdown of a novel that I realistically wasn't ever going to read myself.
I'd be very much up for a more detailed breakdown of any other literary ties that Oda may have drawn inspiration from!
Might be my favourite video that you've put out so far Merphy!
Wow, I've read both of these books but I've never put these thematic connection together. excellent job
I've wanted someone to make a video about the connections between Dressrosa and Don Quixote for so long now! And then you came along. Great video! I wouldn't have minded a 2 hour version of it.
Amazing, do this more often. The soundtrack also is impeccable.
Definitely a fan! I've always just had a vauge sense of what Don Quixote is about and how it really does connect is fascinating!
I love the music in the background it adds such vibe to the vid its almost surreal 😊
even the trick Dofflamingo did to trick law that he is not part of the shishi bukai anymore is a homage to the bookes
MORE OF THIS PLEASE!
Please Merphy! Please do more of these!
The epic of don quixote is one of my favorites and I only saw the surface parallels when reading/watching one piece. I loved this informational break down please do more for the future (not only for one piece) that touch on connective components of written and visual literature and other inspirations
What is impressive about Kuma's punch is that it uses *haki*, the very manifestation of a person's *will* . All the mind-wiping in the world isn't enough to stop Kuma's paternal instincts and Saturn is about get a taste of Kuma's righteous fatherly fury.
Oh wow! I love these connection videos! :)
As someone who reads a ton of manga but not many books I love learning more about Odas inspirations! I also LOVED your Blackbeard vid!!
This was an incredible video, nothing better than hearing a discussion about two of my favorite books.
Yes more of this please! Nitty gritty details and all
I love this video, I would like to learn more about the mythology woven into One Piece!
This is one of my all time fav videos for one piece. I love how we are not only looking into the story but also pondering on the what ifs from a literature stand point.
That being said, i am confused by your reference to Sanji. I thought the setting was more perfect for Usopp where we discover in the end that the whole one piece as a literature is a based on a fictional story he tells to Kaya
This has been one of my favorite One Piece videos from you, getting a crash course in a literary classic that I always *keep* meaning to read is awesome!
Very interesting tie ins, would enjoy an exploration on these types of connections. The guitar background was nice add
The 3rd forgotten book of Don Quixote is my favorite. He commandeered a Portuguese battleship he christened the Demonio Fleur and sailed to Japan. He eventually opened a small shopping bazaar and turned it into a commerce empire. 😗😗😗🤨🤨🤨
Definitely would love more videos like this. Understanding the inspirations for these arcs and how Oda incorporates them into the grander world of One Piece is fascinating.
Oooooh this was very interesting! Would love to see more videos like this!
Yes please, more of this I beg of you 🙏
I think the Sanji's reference Merphy mentioned (or one of them) is that Don Quixote keeps talking about his love Dulcinea, the most beautiful damsel in the world, to the point he will fight randos for not agreeing with him, even though said randos have never even seen her.
Come to think of it, there may be a reference to sugar's powers in the character of Dulcinea.
So, Dulcinea is a fiction created by Don Quixote, she is the perfect princess because every knight has to have one, then one day he aproaches a servant girls and greets her as a noble woman, claiming she is Dulcinea.
When the peasant girl insults him and runs away, Quixote claims she had to be ensorcelled by his enemies to make her forget him and forget who she was, which is kind of what Sugar powers do (more to make others forget you, but still). It's a stretch but it could have been the inspiration.
1:47 There's a pun there, that gets lost in translation. The name Rocinante comes from "rocín" which is the Spanish word for "hack" (not as in "to chop down a tree" or "to steal information through a computer", but as in "worn-out horse"). Of course, this pun is solely for Miguel de Cervantes's work, not applicable to One Piece's Corazón, but I thought I'd bring it up.
And an extra detail, one that's pretty bluntly on the foreground, btw, but a lot of people don't know. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of Don Quixote, was Spanish, born in Alcalá de Henares (close to Madrid) in 1547. Don Quixote is from La Mancha, in the heart of Spain. Dressrosa is also inspired by Spain, specifically by Parc Güell, in Barcelona, except for the colosseum that's most likely inspired by any Roman colloseum in Europe, but also by "Plaza de Toros La Monumental" that's about 15 minutes away from the park, where bullfighting (or in Spanish, "Corrida de Toros", hence "Corrida Colosseum") was practiced (so we got Ucy in One Piece) until it was outlawed by the Catalonian government in 2010. Although the prohibition was nullified by a Spanish Constitutional Tribunal in 2016, as bullfighting had been declared part of the Spain's cultural patrimony and heritage by the Supreme Court, the arena has not been used for bullfighting since 2011.
Do we want more videos like this? Anything Merphy or One Piece related is going to be watched and enjoyed. Thank you for your passion and abundance of knowledge to share with your community. It’s greatly appreciated.
Love your analysis on anything one piece tbh. Thank you merphy
Yes, I've read both texts, OP and Don Quixote. I've been waiting for someone to talk about the connections. Go for it, please make more videos. Thanks!
I like these literary and historical One Piece comparative videos. Both the Blackbeard and this Quijote one.
There's plenty of stories that could be used if this were to become a video series. Like Gulliver's Travels with the Dwarves and the Giants, the 47 Ronin for the Scabbards, Dantes Inferno for Impel Down, the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, and probably quite a few more.
Please do more videos like these please, as both a book reader and Manga reader I would love to see more of this type of content
I love the comparisons, id also like if they were longer
Yes please, I've been wanting to read Don Quixote since this arch came out.
I love this. I'm a sucker for themes, so seeing One Piece explored from this viewpoint is awesome.
Yes! Please more of this type of video!!!!
Yes.
We want more!!!
Sincerely, fan
Idk why something like this never occurred to me but I’d love more stuff like it
