It's all fun and games until Merph releases "The real life Imu" video
That has to happen
Illuminati video incoming lol
The gorosie represent the 5 permanent nations in the security console. USA ,Russia and so.
Imu represents the one who really in control, I will leave that up to you.
As long as they arent jewish...
Well it will turn meta if Imu turns out to have two big round ears, and a high pitched Voice.
@@virustoohazem I feel the same. Always thought the world government flag symbol represented the Five Eyes.
One thing I like is the contrast with some historic characters. Specially Bellamy and Donquixote Doflamingo. Both are part of a crew that don't believe in dreams while Bellamy is the most romantic pirate I've read about and Don Quijote in the books is all about his dreams of living knight's adventures.
The White Beard shows great parallels with the famous pirates, the Barbaros brothers. The elder brother Oruç was called father (baba) by the his crew. they entered the piracy to save their brothers. According to the story, he died because, while fleeing he refused to leave the remaining crewmembers and turned back to attack a much stronger force. They were the most feared pirates of their time and were considered heroes in the territories they ruled. They saved Muslims and Jews who escaped from the Spanish Inquisition. And another cool info: Oruç lost his arm in a conflict, so he had a silver prosthesis so one of his nicknames is the Silver Arm.
See stuff like this is why history is cool
they also enslaved over 10 million africans and sold them to the saudis so i dunno why youre trying to make them out to be good guys
Now that is awesome, Merphy you should write this down Ali Burak Gündüz just gave you your next video idea
And just a side note, Oruç's younger brother Hızır Reis (Reis was their real surname), known as Hayreddin Barbarossa, so he is also the inspiration for Hajrudin in One Piece, was the renown pirate Redbeard: Barba rossa means red beard in Italian (he was the inspiration for Barbossa from Pirates of the Caribbean as well), while Oruç was also inspiration for Urouge
One of the best things about One Piece is how Oda has made Roger into such a legend. Roger’s influence has been felt ever since the beginning of the story and his character has only grown as Luffy travels closer to Laugh Tale. Every single character has an opinion about the King of the Pirates. It’s almost as if we learn more about Roger, we learn more about Luffy.
Oda is such a genius.
For real. It ties so perfectly into the concept of Inherited Will too, and how Roger told Rayleigh "I'm not going to die partner". He passed on his will to anyone who would hear it, his yearning for adventure and fun, and created an entire era by doing so. Despite being dead years before the events of One Piece, Gol D Roger's presence has only gotten stronger, not weaker.
The most mindbogling for me was discovering that the transponder snails also have some basis in reality - as in there really was a theory of snails being able to long distance communicate.
And of course it was a fucking french guy who came up with this theory 😂
oda must be wild reading about french pirates of a bygone era. he is truly a genius!
Yes. YES!!! I love these types of videos.
I can’t wait for all the pirate similarity videos, Black Bart and Bonney need those videos. I’m really excited to get a video on Dante’s Inferno. I had played the video game loved it and it’s what lead me down the rabbit hole of reading the book. When I watched Impel Down got me excited noticing the similarities.
It's interesting, alot of times you'll hear people say that the Strawhats have made too much progress in too little time but the IRL guy who was called "King of the Pirates" was only active for 2 years himself.
I fell down the rabbit hole of this real Pirate way back when I first caught up with One Piece. I love how much of it inspired Oda’s work and the thought that there is potentially a real life One Piece still waiting to be found is just so cool.
Keep these up please. I’ve only ever looked up a little bit of the real Bonney but she seems cool so I’d love to hear about her next!
WHAT ????? I'M FROM THAT PLACE WHERE HE HID HIS TREASURE !!!
You just blew my mind beyond repair here Merph, what the hell.........
I had no idea my small island was the inspiration for One Piece... This is so wild to me
Go find the one piece - and take me on your crew if you need help. I can be your musician Yohohoho
You live on the Real Life Laughtale man!!!!
You should check out Thomas Blake Glover, the Scottish Samurai who helped open the borders of Japan (Wano) like Joyboy but also turned it into an arms manufacturer like Kaido.
Some pretty cool parallels in the history of Japan and Wano.
Technically Japan's borders were less open and more demolished xD Edo Japan had a few really old cannons, and a couple of matchlocks produced by the Portuguese colony in Goa (India) and bought centuries earlier from the Portuguese from Macau(*), during the Sengoku Period (and then reversed-engineered and produced during under the name of Tanegashima, because that's the island where the trade took place), and they were used mostly used to scare animals away from the farmlands. When Matthew Perry (a US Navy Commodore, not Chandler from Friends) arrived, he bombarded Edo (now Tokyo) from his ships and there was nothing Japan could do, as their cannons were not of enough caliber to breach the distance, and neither could their matchlocks (some of them converted to flintlocks after reverse-engineering some Dutch models). The Emperor was forced to surrender and to agree to almost everything, and many revolutions were ignited in retaliation.
Fun fact, Portugal was given the island of Macau by China, as their laws didn't allow them to trade with anyone who didn't have lands in the region, and China and Japan didn't have trade with each other because they both accused pirates from the opposite nation to ransack their cargo ships when returning to their country. Because of that, the Portuguese Macau were the trade link between both countries, making the guns that were available in Japan a byproduct of piracy.
I love how in-depth you go into a series you enjoy. I always knew one piece was filled with real life history but your videos have shown me just how deep it really is. And I love one piece even before this, but you've made me appreciate the work Oda has done even more than I thought I could. Great video.
About Impel Down, I noticed the levels have a lot in common with something else. Apparently Buddhism has realms in cosmology where you can find one for suffering, one for animals, one for hunger, the hell ones have realms for cold and realms for heat… I think Oda based Impel Down on Buddhism cosmology and not Dante’s Inferno. Although the architecture does match. (If it wasn’t for Shaka from Saint Seiya I wouldn’t have made the connection lol)
Yes, but also no. Dante himself took inspiration from Buddhist hell for the Divine Comedy, and Oda took elements from both
Yeh I heard about it as well, Henry Every being one of the inspirations used for roger. His treasure haul is now estimated to be worth around 500 million USD.
But what I found fascinating the most is that he influenced many famed pirates: Teach, Calico Jack, Edward Low, Samuel Bellamy and Bartholomew
This girl is adding a new layer to the fandom, I love it!!!
I really wanted these kind of videos! I really like the parallels between our fictional pirates and real world pirates.
I like that Roger's character was inspired by so many legends because his story created so legends as well
The Lost World (1960) Made me think of Little Garden. I think there's many inspirations from that movie.
Great video Merphy! Hornigold strikes me more as a Rocks parallel, having had so many legends in his crew.
Since you seem to be on a pirate bender, are you considering watching Black Sails? I'm sure you'd love it! It's really about pirate myths and you get to meet a lot of real pirates such as Blackbeard, Anne Bonney, Jack Rackham and Charles Vane. TW for a sexual assault plotline in S1, tho, which might also give you the wrong impression on what the series is about. I promise it's much more than a grim GoT knock-off with pirates.
Embarrassingly my knowledge of pirates comes from Assassin’s creed black flag so I’m loving these vids, would love to see a video on Bartholomew Roberts
Fun fact about how Oda came up with the name Gol D. Roger. In the manga Oda talks about He's theories about what he thinks the origin of pirate flags is. He starts by saying that the crossbones are the thigh bones and that the pirate flag is called the jolly roger which is the symbol of death. He goes on to say there are many theories concerning the origin of the term Jolly roger and that some say that it comes from France referring to the name Jolie rouge meaning red lovely, possibly referring to the blood attributed to the gruesome fights pirates had. He further explains another possibility is that the word roger was originally the word "rouge" meaning thief or villain which can be translate into separate things in Japanese since L's and R's are interchangeable when translating foreign languages into katakanna and rouge and louge are essentially the same thing. Now let's refer to Louge town where Roger was born so Oda could be playing 5D chess with wordplay with rouge town and villain in "log" which is an official record of an adventure and log reversed is Gol, Roger's family name. And then he said/concluded that Old roger was a name for the devil and Roger is always mentioned as a devil. Thus we get to Gol D. Roger, sorry my english is bad but i hope I taught someone something new.
Hmmmm here's an idea for you to look up
Look up tartarian flags, there's a pirate skull and bones among the other flags, alot of connections of old world tartaria
Oda do wordplay. I think Will of D is probably a laughing kingdom. A clan of people who laughs at the odds. Smiling in the face of fear that comes with exploring. A righteous clan. Because you know, the old way of expressing smiling in writing would be :D
Awesome video! I'm a history buff and I love pirates. There are so many real life pirates with fascinating stories. Please do William "Captain" Kidd next! His story is really interesting.
I love to imagine shanks is the prince of pirates in his Era in the One piece world. Idk why but the Prince of Pirates title sounds really cool (Well Technically ace was the prince- but not anymore-)
Losing most of his crew in a storm reminds me a lot of what happened to Shiki when he cornered Roger.
I am loving your One Piece inspiration videos. Just another fun element from the series and a nice glimpse at some interesting literature and historical figures.
this is the content i was waiting for. bridging everything into one, I really want to imitate Oda's way when making a book or manga.
the things he likes, what he reads, what he watches are put together as he wants and become an extraordinary work, connecting everything into one.
Ahhh The treasure was from Goa... Luffy's home kingdom. I always wondered why Oda chose that name.
Love these! Happy for more!
Idk if anyone has pointed this out before but speaking of Henry Every. Oda has said before that Blackbeards original name was “Everything D. Teach” before Oda decided to switch to Marshal. so there might be some inspiration there as well
I would love more of these videos! It's really cool to see all these connections and shows how careful Oda was when creating the story.
Please do go on, I freaking love learning about pirates but I don't have the attention span to actually research them
Lol gol d roger was also ruthless af a lot of people forget how Roger slaughtered Squard’s entire crew
YESSS!! Amazing video!! Roger’s influence (and legacy in the world of one piece) is so fascinating, loved this breakdown
A future video could cover the history of the privateer system and its parallels with One Piece's warlord system.
This is one of my favourite videos of yours I've ever seen. Including all the rankings and reccomendation videos, and I'm a bit of a sucker for those.
Love these types of videos
I also love searching out real world inspirations for stories
I love these videos!! Definitely want to see more of them
Love these videos on real life and/or literary influences for One Piece stuff, super good!
I love these videos!! The Bonney one sounds interesting but I'm here for all of em!
Love these videos Merphy keep them up.
Love these vids such a wonderful combination of ideas
Loving these!
I love that you’re part of our community. Great video! 😊
An interesting video would be about L'Olonnais the pirate who's name inspired Roronoa. That man was crazy.
You are such a RUclips gem. I love how much you put into your videos. New sub here😊
I really love these videos! A pirate I only know a bit about, but would love to know more is Sheuk Yeon, who was a famous Chinese pirate!
Yes defintely, I'm loving these videos very much. More please!
Good content!
Please make more of this!!!
Love the comparisons
I love these vids!!!
Keep doing these please. I'd like to learn about all pirate "curses", and ghost ships and ships that were never found
Me gustan mucho tus vídeos, Merph!
Incredible video. I think there's waaay too few indepth videos on how history influenced One Piece. PLEASE do more!
its fun watching these
I don't have any idea about what i want, but continue making this kind of videos. I love them.
The Lore is Real
I love this video! 😍❤
Yo Ho! Yo Ho! A Booktuber's life for She!
^ some one should draw this
I love these videos😊
I am a sucker for historical references in One Piece and in literature in general, so I am thoroughly enjoying these videos.
I'll be here for the next ones! Could do about Rocks D. Xebec or Whitebeard in real life next
Getting to learn about pirates is so fun! One Piece is the most intimidating manga for me, so I think I'll wait until the series has finished before poking at it with a stick and venturing in slowly.
The Goa Kingdom! Isn't that where Luffy, Ace, and Sabo grew up? 6:46
Yeah
The Bellamy treasure and the bell from his ship came to my cities museum it was amazing
I’m really enjoying this series. Keep them up. I’d like to see correlation between the zorro’s. Alice in Wonderland and Whole Cake Island arc. The Bonny’s although we don’t know much about the One Piece Bonny.
The Inferno was cool, the Purgatorio was also pretty interesting. The Paradiso however was pretty dull and I only made it part way through.
Great 👍🏻 video nice 👍🏻 hype!!!!!!!!!
Cool! You started on Dante's Inferno ^_^ a little side note, if you are interested in watching Cartoon Network's Over The Garden Wall, you can also have fun in making these connections to that awesome series.
Aha! Don’t think I didn’t notice you sneaking in your headcanon with that Jewelry D Bonney at 12:32 Merphy! Got my eye on you 👀
12:34 Don't think I didn't notice you throwing in that little head canon of calling Bonney a D!
Awesome thanks
I'd be interested in an analysis on pirates mentioned but yet to appear.
(Davy Jones, Captain John, Wang Zhi etc)
more of it! :D
Jewelry D. Bonney? Can't tell if that was intentional or a slip of the tongue. Anyway, my biggest "Oh cool!" moment of this video was that he stole his treasure from a ship from the Bishop of GOA. Like Goa Kingdom.
Unless she has inside information from Oda himself, I believe it was just an unintentional slip of the tongue lol
This helps fill the void of general pirate media in my eyes. Please cover more real life pirates!
Oda has been real quiet after this video...
12:33 Jewelry D? Bonney?? She knows something we don't
We absolutely do go go go more more more!!!!!
I really appreciate the videos made by Th e Complying Wench 😂
Jokes aside, I really love this kind of content! The last one made me watch Dressrosa again. It's delightful to have this kind of perception.
This video is fun!
"Bellamy--" oh, I know who was based on this guy! "--was known for his kindness." Oh. Lol
Oh! Do Black Bart next! that sounds amazing.
Gave me a heart attack with that Jewelry D Bonney, thought I missed something.
if they do find gold's treasure i 100% bet someone already found it and never reported it.
the reason i say this is statistics both luck wise and human nature someone
[most likely one of the rich people in the world]
has had a family member who in the past got maroon 5ed on a island and found the treasure or a pirate who was close to gold collected it.
its statistically impossible for it to still be where gold left it it might still be out in the world but it is 100% not going to be where gold left it when he died, whether its due to "people, weather or just time and age" the gold is most likely gonzo.
Ah you might forget about the awful stuff irl pirates would do, but now I wanna find the "Fiery Cross of Goa"
This is fantastic! Have you ever heard of James J. Strang? A self-stylized Mormon King who took over an island on Lake Michigan and became a notorious pirate? Maybe Oda's been drawing inspiration from Mormon history, right under our noses. I've got a one piece themed video all about it on my channel for anyone interested!
Freshwater Pirates: The Lost Treasure of the Mormon King
Can't wait for jewelery Bonnie's video
Love youuuu
The pirate Merph on screen! 👀👏👏
I love this 🔥🔥🔥
I would love to watch this kind of video about EVERBODY
You should do Roche Braziano who I belive is rocks D xebec his name means rocks the Brazilian
2:04 He was a Shichibukai
I have been down the rabbit hole too I read lot of things you mentioned and I wouldn't mind listening to pirate stories related or unrelated to one piece 😂
I would like to know more about Anne bonny 😍😍 maybe other female captains as well? There are some very underrated captain who were more successful
I think Law has a historical equivalent, it would be awesome to see a video on him
Okay... That's epic.
The bishop of Goa like the goa kingdom where ace sabo and luffy were
I enjoy these but didn’t know they weren’t One Piece spoiler videos until I clicked on one 😊
I noticed that Oda also took inspiration from libertalia a pirate utopia that has never been found
Since i'm Algerian i highly recommend reading about the brothers Barbarous (or Barbarossa) they were ruling all of the Mediterranean sea (and basically the world) and they were feared by everyone during the ottoman empire time.
