@BLOOP BLOOP Don Quixote (novel) is a crazy, idealistic guy. Full of hope and dreams even if it's something absurd. Doffy is a crazy villain that loves to crush everyone's dream. Btw, Rosinante in the novel is Don Quixote's horse
No worries about picking a subject that someone else may have talked about, that’s the best part of the One Piece community, getting to see so many different viewpoints on the material because it affects everyone differently.
Yes exactly this, this is why I love to watch many different reviews and first readthroughs because people have such different perspectives and opinions and reactions.
@@yashshavithapliyal8740 iirc he’s made a video covering every island, devil fruit, and ability in the series. I’m pretty sure he’s covered every character at some point too, although not necessarily in a dedicated video.
@@Toast4tw Personally, I think Doffy hates Bellamy because he gave up his affluent background to be a pirate. It isn't being a Celestial Dragon, but I can imagine Doffy being disgusted at the idea of someone lowering themselves for no good reason. He doesn't want to be a pirate, it's just the best position for him to be in at the moment. He kept Bellamy around as a toy to play with, someone who would do anything for a reward Doffy never planned to give him. An example of Doffy's sadistic nature.
“If someone has already made a video on this I’m sorry” Many people have made videos on every conceivable topic in One Piece. But your analysis is more fastidious and nuanced than most other OP youtubers, so never let that affect your decision to make a video on something :)
Us One Piece fans eat this type of content up we don’t care if it’s been talked about before. The manga has such a great depth to be analyzed an discussed.
Oh there's so many overlaps. I don't think Merph has comprehended that there's one piece RUclipsrs who've been making a living off of Just being one Piece content creators for over a decade. Like not just one person, but probably over a dozen especially if you include not Anglosphere One Piece RUclipsrs. Like Arabic one piece RUclipsrs got Rockstar into top 100 global popularity polls, the English speakers got woop slap into top 50. So there's plenty of one piece RUclips content, but why we like Merph's stuff is watching her first journey not knowing where some story elements are going.
Correction! Merphy's theory about Doffy's fruit is mostly right, but it was Trébol that researched and looked for the fruit, further expanding the theme of Doflamingo not having any meaningful decision in his life, and introducing the irony of a puppet puppeteering!
@@fupopanda lol but do you think if someone like Trebol approached Corazon he would have followed him? Ofc not bc he never wanted to kill anybody unlike Doffy and the same goes with Doflamingo if someone like Sengoku approached him he won't follow him he was already corrupted by the time Trebol came, and just wanted nothing but revenge
@@Anananaonymosu Not really. Both Law and Rosinante weren't as inherently cruel as Doffy. Doflamingo was really the only one in his family who was obstinately opposed to relinquishing the life of being a Celestial Dragon and was angry and bitter from the start, as opposed to Cora. Doffy was happy to have slaves serve under him. His flashback showed both his trauma from the attack being a big source of rage of his, but he has always been a bastard to a certain extent.
His speech at MF is a direct reference to his childhood, he is the only kid ever to be at the peak of power and wealth when being a tenryubito, and right after be so poor that he had to eat trash
If I recall correctly Doflamingo was actually given his fruit and the pistol he used by Trebol when they took him in. Trebol basically cast him in the role. He gave him agency for the first time in his life and chose the two items that would shape his agency. I don't think Trebol actively manipulates Doflamingo very much in present day. I think he just did an excellent job of setting him on a life path that Trebol could just ride along with comfortably.
She probably means that doffy know is tge product pf trebol manipulation, trebol know is more of a supervisor , before, he was the leader of the family
Trebol nurtures the evil side of Doffy, and that' how he manipulates him. Let's say Doffy had met someone understanding and compassionate over Doffy's anger, and taking him in and educating him to tame his anger, he would have become a different person. But Doffy's father was the worst for his son because he did not understand him and made poor choices over his idealistic views of going down to live "happily" among "normal" humans. The big mistake on his part was that he did not understand History and the humans "below". He was too naive in his views. And that naivety destroyed his life and a spoiled kid who did not understand what was going on. Trebol was the worst for Doffy because he nourished the evil sparkles into a fire, making Doffy think that he was right for hating his father, and putting him on a pedestal. That's the worst you can do to a narcissistic person. I hate Trebol so much. lol
@@susied1772 Another, very subtle bit of Oda playing Foreshadowing Porn: the way Trebol and the other earliest members of the “Donquixote Family” resemble the Gorosei kneeling before Ym. It was a very brief panel, and I don’t remember the chapter number, but it was part of Trebol presenting the pistol to Doffy. But looking back, it seems like Oda is subtly connecting the two images-Trebol and three others kneeling before Doffy on a heap, the Gorosei kneeling before Ym on the Empty Throne. Also note how in every appearance thus far, Ym’s posture is so unnaturally erect, that they wear their crown the same way Zeff wears his chef’s toque…that whoever Ym really “is,” they look down on everyone, even the Gorosei, from the vantage of the Empty Throne. Maybe Doflamingo’s characterization foreshadows Ym’s, though I get the sense the latter’s narcissism is polarized a different way than the former’s. Heh, Merphy just compared Doflamingo to a little kid thrashing in a cage, and Ym truly seems the opposite, ensconced in Pangaea Castle-like Sauron as a flaming eye atop his ivory tower (though it’s black), in Lord of the Rings. BONUS: Rocks D. Xebec may have had a Napoleon complex, seeming to be such a short guy in comparison to the giants he peopled his crew with-Whitebeard, Kaido, Big Mom, et al. This would be a nice allusion on Oda’s part to Commander Red from Dragon Ball, who was also a dwarfish man.
To answer your question about when Doflamingo got his Devil Fruit: Trebol gave him the devil fruit along with the gun that he would then use to kill his father. So he basically got it when he first met Trebol.
@@edwardfrench9368 true but I think it's pretty much implied that if he didn't eat it when he first got it he probably ate it after the celestial dragons rejected him. Which is still around the same time frame
well the fruit yes but not the gun I'm sure, he met Trebol when he was already alone, they stayed together as a family ever since they met, besides the one thing that got Trebol's attention was Doffy's potential to be king and conqueror haki which he awakened while being strunged up and burned. And if it were like u said then he would've surely used the gun to defend his family and himself from the angry villagers
The irony of ‘Mingo is that he’s a puppet master but needs an audience (the black market) and someone to host him (The Emperor). If the puppet don’t move the way the black market wants them too, then the venue won’t host him. The parallels to him constantly wanting to show the black market his ‘show’. My head canon ofc 💕 Love the video!
or just him wanting to lord over his power and charisma to everyone in general, like him making a big show of 'saving' dressrosa, the gladiator arena and even the death cage battle royale.
I mean, that's more by design, mingo was smart in that he made himself vauluble to every major power, he could even though he did not need to, mingo would have still been a warlord and king of dressrosa without the emperor and the black market. But by working for the emperor, the other emperors would not fight him as that means starting a war, and since he is a warlord the navy can't fight him. The black market thing was for money and to prepare a massive war with which he could use to take over the world and replace imu.
I believe Oda said Baby 5's name refers to her mother's disinterest in her children to the degree that she named them by numbering them as she gave birth. Baby 1, Baby 2, Baby 3, Baby 4 and then Baby 5.
I don't think he ever said it, but the name does imply that. Though, she and Buffalo describe their current names as aliases when they ask Law about his real name (where he reveals himself to be a D). So, Baby 5 might not be her actual name.
Doflamingo is the best. He’s such a scumbag. Despite having a tragic backstory, you never truly feel bad for him because he’s an utter monster. He murders, maims, and destroys with the ease of breathing. How much of that is Trebol’s influence and how much is Doffy himself is up for debate, but still. Also, he has a really cool Devil Fruit.
Personally I think it was mostly Trebol. Because Rosinante went through the same stuff and he was a kind person because he was raised by Sengoku, a kind person
@@zach415 Cora bluntly says he was born insane. He was born into the perfect environment for his psychopathy and hates his dad for removing them from his ideal life. It's implied to be genetic when we get a glimpse at his ancestor. That's the point of Doffy. He's a madman whose tragic backstory is that his father wanted him to be a better person. I wish Oda did way more with Trebol but he threw him away. Even his final scene had no relevance despite making it a big deal during the chapter but his suicidd forgotten immediately after.
@@zach415 Although you do see their different reactions to what the went through for Cora it was fear and Doffy it was fury - how dare they treat him this way when he was so far above them
I love how, unlike A LOT of writers, Oda doesn't give characters like Doffy a backstory to make him sympathetic and rredeemable, but mroe to give him a motive for his villainy, to explain WHY he's a monster, but not to forgive him. Having reasons for doing bad things doesn't excuse you from doing bad things, and Oda consistently shows that.
@@Ryuksgelus Keep in mind we are shown how doffy acts BEFORE the tragedy: exactly like the bratty Celestial Dragons we've seen before. Despite his father, mother and brother being kind and rejecting that lfiestyle, Doffy contnued to act as if nothing changed and that he DESERVED to own slaves, be rich and lord it over the cmmonfolk.
Doflamingo's backstory is what cemented him as my favorite villain. He even states before the flashback that no one has suffered as much as him, and when you see the story you actually realize that instead of sympathizing, you actually grow to hate him even more, that he was always a twisted and entitled monster. It's like a subversion of the Strawhat Tragic Flashback trope and I absolutely love it.
I've watched so many videos on Doffy, nobody has ever pointed out that his attacks are named after awful things people said to him in his backstory. There's always something new one can find watching more discussions! Honestly, it's kind of what makes the story; there's almost always a detail you missed that someone else catches. It only makes the story better, who cares if other people made Doffy videos. Rock on!
Lol, then you have not seen to much. In forums it has been said many times. But it one of those things hard to catch. Right now, for example, Sanji with his hell memories and how it's power depends on the traumatic events he has passed through. Or Roger's sword name and his son. Or how Oda has been liking everything since chapter 1.

Powers melding into personality must be something Oda uses as a recipe. And it isn’t just on devil fruits. Hody was someone whose hatred isn’t his own, and his powers comes from pills, not his own.
Yeah and this might be a stretch but I feel it also plays into what type of fish he was, his hatred led to him viewing fishmen as the superior race so oda made him a Great white shark
other examples (some stretching the logic a bit): -Blackbeard and his fruit of darkness, which allows him to lure and steal. -Rob Luccy being part of the so-called "dark justice" -Gekko Moria controlling the shadows to have dead companions (considering that Kaido killed his ancients and he was now a shadow of what he was)
Donquixote Doflamingo was one of the most dangerous and formidable villains, an extremely important cog in the machine that is the world of One Piece, politically his downfall will be felt for years to come and as time goes by I think the One Piece base will come to realize how fundamental Doflamingo was to the story of One Piece.
I remember telling my brother for years that when Luffy beats Doffy the entire fabric of One Piece would change because the 7 Warlords were the first serious antagonists in the story we were told about and he was the final one Luffy had to go against. Luffy beating Doffy is one of the most significant achievements of the plot.
Love that you bring up trebol's role in maintaining doffy's disposition in so much depth. Cora & doffy are very different but they also end up being given help by very different people. Cora was adopted by sengoku which greatly benefits Cora in who he ends up becoming. While doffy is noticed by trebol who gives doffy a place where he's not told to stop doing what he does. That need for people who accept doffy can also be seen in how doffy cares about his crew, his family. Doffy doesn't question Cora when he comes back after years. But the moment someone rejects doffy, he doesn't question that either and instantly puts them down like he did with his father & later cora & wants to do with the world. I think the tragedy is that everyone sees him as this untouchable evil, down to even Cora who says that doflamingo is the devil since he was a child. Meanwhile we see doflamingo getting PTSD and waking up from sleep all shaken up and terrified as an adult because that night he got tortured. Showing what a truly desperate person he is. And everything doffy does to control others is a desperate attempt at gaining control over his life that he never even once had just like you said.
A large part of why Cora said that Doflamingo was the devil since he was a child? Is that why the brothers and their father were up against the wall being torture and used as scape goats for everything the Celestial Dragons has done to people? Instead of crying, of begging and pleading like a normal person would or his family did? Doffy was enraged and screamed at them vowing to kill them all in revenge.
Trebol gave Doflamingo his fruit and his gun when he was 10 years old. I think that Trebol purposefully gave him the String-String fruit because of what Doflamingo ambition was. It's also fitting that Trebol made Doflamingo a puppet by literally giving him strings.
I wouldnt worry about going over a topic others have. One Piece has been around way too long and has entire channels just dedicated to the manga for something to never have been talked about. It is all about how you approach the topic. Which you have done a great job with. As someone that reads a lot of regular novels I have really enjoyed your look at the series from a narrative lens.
Its SO interesting seeing a person who's not "in" the One Piece community, because we all sort of see the story a certain way, even if we have our own theories, theres a sort of unconscious agreement on the way we see the story going, but YOU. The way you see the story isn't tainted by years of the community's influence. And thats super interesting, seeing a "newbie" and the way you see the story unfolding, completely unrelated to the way that I see it as a person who's been watching/reading weekly for 8 years is probably some of the most interesting OP content i've seen in a while. I'm really glad you like the story so much so far lol, fantastic videos. Edit: I've literally seen NOBODY talk about how some of Doffy's abilities were named after stuff he heard when his family was strung up, holy damn dude thats a good observation
I absolutely love that his fruit is string and his kingdom is toy. He's literally a MAN CHILD doing whatever he wants and breaking his TOYS. Also the string thing is 2fold like you mention. He manipulates everything with his strings (physically or not) . But at the same time, he got to where he is mostly because someone was pulling his strings. His dad took him away from Mariejois. Trebol propped him up. He himself was a puppet in a way. And then it's so genius that breaking his strings also SETS OFF MOTIONS OF EVENTS. Because his strings were tieing everything together Also his quote in MF makes so much sense coming out of HIS mouth. "kids who know only war and kids who know only peace have differing values". Doflamingo is both. He's been to Heavens and Hells in the One PIece world.
What I love about Doffy is no matter how ruthless and merciless he is towards other people, he actually care really deeply the people in Doflamingo Family. How he apologies to Monet and thanking Vergo for all the service that they have done. How he casually kills his foot soldier for laughing at Pika. All this tickles my feelings.
That is not love, is manipulation. In the case of Monet, Doffy was willing to use her death to destroy his enemies. LUFFY WOULD NEVER DO THIS. Not only Luffy, but all other non-manipulative characters. Whitebeard would never say to Ace "look Ace, i am glady for everything you did to me, now die because i will not fight the Marines and risk dying". Doffy dont care about his "family", he only uses them as tools to further his goals, but in order to have them by his side, he treats them "well", the marks of a true manipulator. Doffy needs people willing to die for him if the times comes, this is why he says things to keep their mood. The best example is Law, he wanted to manipulate Law in order to use his Ope Ope ability, altrough Rocinante helped him and saved Law. Doflamingo does not know love.
I really like how he does genuinely care about his family and is invested in knowing about them, but it's so interesting that the second they stop being loyal to him then he uses these things against them, it's interesting because it's so personal when someone turns their back on him - he shot Cora much the same way as he shot their father, when viola turned on him who had originally signed up to protect her family (specifically her father) he tried to force her niece to kill her, then there's Law who he shot with 3 specifically lead bullets and the scene where he ripped his arm off instead of just killing him there and then (when he easily could have) was just so vicious and kind of a nod to "so you took the op-op fruit from me and now you can remove peoples limbs at will, so can I wanna see"
@@wwe12153 I just love how he's written in the sense that he knows how to get back at anyone who turns their back on him in ways that are like I said so personal he never seems to forget anything whether it happened to him or someone else he knows 'which strings to pull' he really is such a fascinating villain to read
The video on Doucheflamingo, this should be a good one :D Trebol is a slippery snake which I personally hate more than Doffy. Good catch on the similarities between Doffy and BB5. This is a really good video!
Spot on character study. I was really glad you brought up the part about how much he loves his family. There are some really crucial gags in the form of annoying quirks they all have that he’s super good about understanding and respecting. For example, trebol being way too close all the time. He always says “I’m too close…but?” And normally everyone is like gtfo, but doffy switches his tone real fast and says “but I like it”. Or how diamanté always shuns compliments. Doffy quickly understands and was like, alright you’re not that great. And immediately diamanté is like wait I am though. It’s like, eerily wholesome. He truly is one of the best villains in one piece, but if kaido doesnt take it with his inevitable upcoming backstory, it’s still big mom for me. That is a truly tragic fucking villain Oh also 1000th comment
The influence of devil fruits on the user is not exclusive to villains, just look at Luffy, he always bounces back.. or ace, he was very hot headed. I think it’s Great That in many cases we learn about the characters personality through their powers, it saves time for Goda, is funny and helps for some irrational reason with the immersion.
Whitebeard shook the world, Crocodile sucks the life out of the country like his fruit sucks the moisture out of people, Chopper is one of the greatest models of humanity for the series, Enel used his Lightning fruit to become a god, etc.
@@vashythewabbit8288 you could also say that Akainu has a hot temper (always angry), and that Aokiji is always cold temper, and is always calm. Everything around him must feel super slow, including possibly his own body when he is "normal" (idk im theorising here)
@@royaleagle04 Contrary to popular belief, Akainu never actually has shown to be easily angered, in fact the only times he was actually angry is when he was the fleet Admiral getting pissy with Fujitora and the 5 Elders.
"The cage just keeps getting synched in more and more Everytime he tries to manufacture his own destiny." That is such a perfect way to put everything doflamingo is and everything he tries to do throughout the story in so many levels. It encapsulates everything from his powers to his position as the broker who manufactures these artificial devil fruits and to his liter self trying desperately to take that control.
Actually, after hearing your headcanon of Doffy and his devil fruit, the actual way in how he got it is even sadder, because it was Trevol the one who gave it to him, with Doffy still being a child, so not even then he has agency in the important things that happen to him; it's just another way in which someone else took that decision away from him. Also, don't feel bad about making a video analysis of Doffy!! One of the best things about this series and its community is watching the story from other people's eyes! And you touched some very important points that not a lot of people have!! As always, it's been a delight to watch you get caught up with the series!!!
If this video is just off the dome and u just spoke what was in ur mind without a script or anything than I’m genuinely impressed at how good you can articulate your thoughts and not lose track of what you’re talking about or the point you’re trying to convey. I can’t speak two full sentences without getting distracted or forgetting what i was trying to convey. Hats off well done genuinely impressed
It was Trebol that gave Doflamingo his devil fruit, and the pistol he used to kill his father. Excellent analysis, and you touch on a very important element of Doflamingo, Corazon. Corazon is so crucial in that while were learning about everything Doflamingo went through, we see his brother who went through the exact same things, but who chose a different path. And I love that, too many times I've seen a villain get a tragic backstory and the fans begin to sympathize and defend them. Corazon demonstrates that while they went through some horrific events as children, Doflamingo is not excused in all the pain and suffering he unleashed.
Doflamingo's heart seat is always missing. First with Vergo then with Corazon and Im not aware who the heir was but it was supposed to be Law. So Doffy's heart is always sorta vacant.⁶

@@belphegor649 mafia bosses wouldn't think of betraying their own subordinates in the first place, it wouldn't benefit them in any situation for the long term.
Another thing that I think Doflamingo’s story brings attention to is that its another showing of how Oda disdains the unthinking, selfish, convenient logic of everyday people. Think of how many times Oda has displayed the citizens of this world, and think how many times those people have been put in a good light. Almost every location we’ve gone to shows how masses of people are extremely fickle in how they approach situations. Its a part if Oda’s storytelling that I really enjoy looking into.
True but it’s not all bad, we see how much the citizens help try and stop the birdcage and how the gladiators try to buy gear 4 recovery Luffy some time
@@RonquixoteDIII The gladiators I get, since they have no problem risking their lives. It’s something that comes with what they do. The citizens are another matter. I can easily make the case that they cared more about their own survival than the survival of their neighbor or resisting Don Flamingo. How many of them would have changed their tunes if Don Flamingo had a moment of clarity in the middle of that battle, and offered the citizens an out if they turned on Luffy, or those helping him?
@Vailing Bow i agree it’s more of an Oda thing, but would say it’s not completely of topic. I would argue that Doffy became Doffy partly because the citizenry is the way it is. Heck it’s part of the reason why he was able to take over a country. But yes it’s a bit unrelated, Merphy mentioning it sparked the thought so I wanted to get it out there.
Hardcore disagree, in my opinion Oda has been pretty clear that it is the fault of the powerful that the people are not informed or empowered in their day to day life. He definitely has critiques of how average people often times are inactive in their own lives, but I do not think he puts the blame solely on the individual. Oda has an incredible understanding of systemic issues. That is why nearly every time when given the information necessary, civilians in One Piece tend to be on the right side. When they are truly given a choice rather than forced or tricked into complicity, they are nearly always shown to be noble and shown to care about the pain of those around them.
Kinda following Merphy's tangent here, I remember back then I was really surprised by Trebol's involvement. At first he just seemed like an extremely annoying guy we could have lived without, but the flashback made him so much more interesting and I enjoyed that a lot. p.s. you can't possibly pronounce Zou worse than Daniel did lmao
I believe that Oda's stated that the devil fruits manifest differently for every person based on their personality, there is a core ability given by it but every user of the fruit can be a bit unique from the previous users through that.
I gotta stop this just past 14 minutes just to comment. Gurl! I love watching your One Piece videos, because of your unique, intelligent, and honest ideas about a subject matter that I also love. I think this might be the best character study of Doffy I've ever heard or read. Keep up the great work! And all the best wishes upon you and your family.
I'm glad that you appreciate Trebol's contribution to how evil Doflamingo turned out to be and how much of his fingerprints are all over most of the terrible things that happened in Dressrosa. People tend to overlook that detail because he's such a weird and gross looking character, but I think that he's part of what made the villany in Dressrosa so great.
He's hands down the best written villian in one piece. So many different villian styles, villian origin stories and styles of influence & power rolled into one amazing package.
I'd say he's a contender. Like we can all agree Foxy and WaPol are the worst. But I'm really starting to comprehend Blackbeard as knowing he has some connection to Luffy and Ace, but still goes after them specifically to get on the good side of the WG. See celestial Dragons? I'm a D, willing to capture and turn over other D. Just like Garp! So I'm really starting to hate Blackbeard selling out his family specifically to get what he wants. Meanwhile Law is like okay I'm gonna bring a Submarine with a full surgery room to Marineford incase one of my clan needs emergency medical assistance and escape this war.
@@michaelmanzana210 I don't really consider Katakuri a villian but an antagonist rather. He ultimately thinks very similarly to luffy, and they respect each other. DOffy and luffy on the other hand re entirely opposed. Don't get me wrong, I love Katakuri. He's not as a complex as Doffy but this simplicity actually makes him the great character he is.
This is a great breakdown of doffy's character with so many little details that I completely missed/ have forgotten like the names of doffy's attacks and him reading up on law
Doflamingo is deliciously and understandably evil...Oda is a genius. For example: Law is literally on the brink of trying to kill him dead...and Dolfamingo still craps on Law and his lifelong hidden ambition of revenge in killing him for his brother which he killed himself. The level of narrassicm that he even being on the edge of death, he can still have even about to be killed; and which, he can some how still even own or even think he can have an ounce of power in that scenario is astonishing.
Do Flamingo's confidence is enough to make you love him as a character. So charismatic and those few moments when he isn't smiling hit even harder because of the confidence he has 99% of the time. That 1% of the time where he's pissed, you know he's about to go crazy!!
The horrifying implications of Doffy's past are the thing that have made the biggest impact to me. If you are a Celestial Dragon there is NO way out. You cannot escape. No one will let you. The Celestial Dragons can never be reformed because even if one of them had a moment of regret the stifling fear of what would happen is enough to make them retreat back into their echo chamber and make excuses for their actions. The fact that these people are given no room for growth at all, by anyone, is so impactful to me.
One of the most nuanced and interesting things that gets explored in this series is the shape that trauma, particularly childhood trauma, can take shape in different ways. It isn't content to simply go, "oh here's this tragic backstory and this is why this character is so compassionate now," or "here's this terrible thing that happened and that's why this character has become damaged and does terrible things." It shows both and goes out of its way to highlight that why people become who they are isn't some simple formula. Corazon and Doflamingo are a great example of this dichotomy, where they were raised in the exact same environment and experienced the exact same treatment but came away from it with wildly different world views. This is not a series that's interested in a black and white world view where being a Marine means you're Good and being a pirate means you're Bad, or vice versa-- we see plenty of examples of extremes in both groups, plus a lot of behavior in between from all sides. This is the same series that in the Baratie arc declared that money doesn't hold any real value beyond what human beings give it, and it can't keep you alive when you have nothing else, and then in the very next arc declares that money matters a tremendous amount to people who don't have it, and that it can very much save lives. Both of these are allowed to be true and tremendously formative and important experiences to two of the main characters, and either story invalidates the other. This constant contrast remains true through the series, and it creates such a complex and rich experience. It's really great to see you talking about this stuff and exploring so much of the gray area and nuance at work in the series. Friday mornings have become a real treat.
I've always appreciated the story Oda told through Doffy. Beyond just crafting a nuanced villain, and showing that there's a reason behind actions - not a justifiable reason, but still a reason - he also tackles a fairly delicate concept. Oda spends so long making us hate the Celestial Dragons, that I've known fans who've made statements akin to, "why not just kill them all?" And in plenty of fantasy that would be a statement that would never be addressed. But not in One Piece. In this tale Oda is insistent on getting across the idea that everyone is human. The underdogs, sure, but even the overlords. There are no absolutes and you should judge someone based on themselves, not their race, their economic standing, their cultural background, their father, their career, etc. He's done it with the Fishman, in Skypia, with Ace, and now with Doffy. And while it was easy for readers to sympathize with a character they like, in Ace, agreeing that he shouldn't be called a demon just because his father was Pirate King. It was much harder for them to make that mental leap for Doffy and co. accepting that being Celestial Dragons isn't reason enough to condemn a child as a demon. Plenty of authors redeem their villains to make them seem more complex. Oda is amazing in that he didn't redeem Doffy, he just explained him. And he used that explanation to call a lot of us out on our own internal bias.
It is nostalgic and refreshing to hear a Doffy review from you Merphy. We're very happy to see reviews of our favorite arcs and characters from your perspective! Thank you!
I think everyone forgot that the Birdcage was supposed to kill everything and everyone one the island except Doffy, including his family. So yeah, he kind of cares about them, but when it comes down to it he is ready to throw their lives away if it means he will be saved
It wouldn't kill the family, weren't they part of the original bird cage he used in the Law flash back? he probably opens up an escape for them and then finishes it
I do not think the birdcage was strong enough to kill any high durability characters at all. I do not see it killing Trebol, Pika or anyone with armament haki. I think it was only capable of exterminating weaker people and not durability specced people anyway.
oh absolutely, at the end of the day he cares about himself only. His love fr his family is conditional, the moment they stop being 'worthy' ofhis lvoe in his eyes he pays them no second thought, such as how he just isnults trebol rather than show any concern once trebol is defeated.
@@masterxehanort3 all his subordinates were lying on the ground, unconscious, not able to use armament. He would open it up - great, but at what point? If he just wanted to stop people from escaping the island and spreading the truth about him, he could use it and just kill everyone himself, like he did 15-ish years ago. Instead he started shrinking it, implying he was ready to kill everyone inside, and even specifically stated that soon all people outside the royal plato will be dead
@@iamdivan7368 Yeah there are a lot of places in the story that imply he cares about his family, but primarily himself. It's kind of a thing I love abt the Doffy family. Its like a twisted narcissistic version of Luffy's Crew. Best part is that it's still not clear if that is meant to imply his care is "fake" necessarily. I could say it still seems like he genuinely cares for his close subordinates but his love is conditional as said earlier, but I could also say its naive to believe that considering he *is* willing to give up their lives for his own sake.
Hi Merphy! Happy to see you're still loving the series! When you caught up, you should do character analysis on OP characters with classic literature villains that have the same depth! I don't read books all that much so a topic like this would be super interesting.
FYI doffy and Violet where in a relationship at some point, however Oda decided to let it out of the story because it was more of a Stockholm Situation and/or he violated her aka "grape" her. Makes his Character even more evil.
Not really the reason. At least as I know, Oda didn't show their relationship explicitly, was because of target demographics of Japanese Shounen audiences. So he doesn't talk about sexual relationship as much in actual story. But he confirmed their partnership in the SBS.
By all means create character analysis videos, with your reading pace youll get to the latest arc in a short time. There are a bunch of characters in one piece that is fun to dissect! I always love your videos Murphy! Cheering from the Philippines!
Your videos made me appreciate One Piece as a story so much more. I've been following the story week by week since Marineford and your videos and also Daniel's made me notice there were so many details I missed. Thank you so much! 🤩
What I like about his attitude to family is that it ls a good foil to luffy. They both genuinely love their “family” but Doffy will always put himself and his desires above them. He wasnt happy about it but he’ll ask monet to kill herself to blow up the island if it keeps him safer. While luffy would never tell anyone to sacrifice their life or dream for him
15:00 Yes, we see *Trebol* give him the String-String fruit as well as the gun he used to kill Corazon after he was rejected from returning to the Celestial Dragons. Also *MAJOR PROPS for noticing the eye thing,* it's one of those fandom theories that since the story moved on died down a bit, but a lot of people suspect that Doffy is missing an eye.
"dofflamingo still is not the author of his own story....when I look at doflamingo I still see a child strung up, a child crying, a child with absolutely no power". Trebol's role in doffy's life may have been just a small nudge and encouragement but it really was that string that pulled him completely with no going back into the life of desperately trying to get back control and get back what he once had courtesy of his title and his ancestors and not himself which was taken away in the first place by decisions that was also not made by himself. With doflamingo it's really this cycle of questioning what could've been different for Doffy.
3:23 No need to apologize Miss Murphy Cuz I very much enjoy your content times like this I love listening to different types of perspective of a story or it's character gives lots of insight if you're open-minded & respectful enough to understand . What makes that even better if it's coming from a logical perspective
People don't tend to make mention of this: Not only was Doflamingo raised to believe he was above "normal" people, but the way in which his family is treated causes him to double down on that belief. People essentially proved him correct (in his eyes.)
I just started watching your channel. It's nice to see someone experience one piece for the first time. I feel like after she gets caught up or gets to wano. She should get involved into the one piece community. It would be nice to see her point of view with the one community on RUclips.
Merph, there's probably youtube videos doing character analysis on every single character of One Piece (up to and including Stefan, Whitebeard's dog that plays catch with his moustache). For relevant characters, there are tens of videos. For Doffy I'm positive there are hundreds, possibly thousands. There could be a million, and you still would not need to apologize for making the million-and-first, for 2 reasons: a) Every new video comes from a different PoV; overlapping with a group of videos in some points, overlapping with another group in others, but they all usually bring something new to the table, even if it is only the way they connect those points to each other, or which part of his complex personality they decide to focus on. b) You are already a One Piece fan, so you should know at this point: We can spent entire days talking and listening about One Piece, and we won't get bored of it. How can you, with such a complex world and story, with so many moving details and pieces that you missed, or consequences you could not foresee? One Piece is a living being, and a fascinating one. How could you not like trying to get to understand and know such a character a bit better? EDIT: To illustrate this point: Last night I was invited to a readalong and live discussion on chapter 1030. Stream ended up lasting 2.5 hours, and we spent most of it talking about One Piece in general, remembering for the Nth time stuff we've seen, read and discussed as many times as there are minutes in a day, from Baratie to Enies Lobby, from Dressrosa to Arlong Park, and we had a blast with it. If there's one thing the One Piece community likes it's talking about One Piece
GLR created a vid about doffy just this week about how doffy's defeat affected the world. it's a nice and precise way of putting it. (Not for merphy tho, Too spoilery)
Yeah I saw the goblin post on that, but there's some spoilers in that go way past Dressrosa like a certain Reverie character reveal. So probably not safe to dive into any one piece tuber till she's at least in current arc.
Imagine you have all this great content on RUclips to consume and you choose to watch someone like Grandline'Review' who just describes things that happen without analysis.
@@notrixamoris3318 I must have watched 10+ of his videos and unless I just happen to watch all the worst ones, I really don't understand why people watch his content. At least when Ohara baits me it has 1-2 good points and his character videos are amazing.
One thing I found funny about trebol was his “death cry.” He made fun of the the tontatta for yelling pigya as their “death cry”, but when law defeats him he yells pigya.
I absolutely love how you picked up on him probably losing an eye. Also now that you’re in the thick of it in one piece I must ask if you have heard about the checkered history theory of one piece? How after the time skip each saga mimics the previous sagas but in an opposite fashion. Think skypea how they go up for fisam island for them to go down. But that’s just surface level.
Never be afraid to make a video about anything. Even if it was covered by someone else, it wasn’t covered by YOU! We want to hear your voice on these topics and I am enjoying it sooo much. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤩
I like Doflamingo for the fact he's a well written evil character you don't get that often these days anymore most of the well written villains now in days are like fallen heroes or misguided villains with good intentions not a bad thing but you also forget you can write a good villain whose evil through and through while also having him or her have depth and for One Piece specifically most of the villains are bad but they're like black and white bad like Hordy or Enel and the marines are debatable since they view pirates as an evil and alot of them aren't even aware of half the shady shenanigans of the top government
The birdcage is a perfect metaphor for Doflamingos mind. He created this violent response to anything that tries to enter it but he also keeps holding on to the very things that damage him narrowing his mind to the point of self destruction.
Doflamingo's still my favorite One Piece villain to this day so I'm so happy his story resonated with you in the way that it did. Great video Merphy!

Doflamingo is the exact opposite of Don Quixote from the novel written by Miguel De Cervantes
@BLOOP BLOOP Don Quixote (novel) is a crazy, idealistic guy. Full of hope and dreams even if it's something absurd.
Doffy is a crazy villain that loves to crush everyone's dream.

He kept Bellamy around as a toy to play with, someone who would do anything for a reward Doffy never planned to give him. An example of Doffy's sadistic nature.

@@Anananaonymosu Not just Trebol, but Corazon was taken in by Sengoku. They two brothers did not have the same circumstances.
It just takes double to each their characters
In the words of Doflamingo "I've experienced both of Heaven and Hell at the age of ten!"
I hate Trebol so much. lol
I agree with you
@@susied1772 Another, very subtle bit of Oda playing Foreshadowing Porn: the way Trebol and the other earliest members of the “Donquixote Family” resemble the Gorosei kneeling before Ym.
Yep, I don’t think trebol does much in the latter part, doflamingo is too smart
To answer your question about when Doflamingo got his Devil Fruit: Trebol gave him the devil fruit along with the gun that he would then use to kill his father. So he basically got it when he first met Trebol.
True, though he didnt necessarily eat it at first.
@@edwardfrench9368 true but I think it's pretty much implied that if he didn't eat it when he first got it he probably ate it after the celestial dragons rejected him. Which is still around the same time frame
He's like "have this DF, kid."
well the fruit yes but not the gun I'm sure, he met Trebol when he was already alone, they stayed together as a family ever since they met, besides the one thing that got Trebol's attention was Doffy's potential to be king and conqueror haki which he awakened while being strunged up and burned. And if it were like u said then he would've surely used the gun to defend his family and himself from the angry villagers
he probably picked up the one he used to kill his father from one of the unconscious villagers
Nice Headcanon.
@@thewizof0275 true, she has an actual name we still don't know
Doflamingo is the best.
Bad guys with “codes of honor” are always so fascinating in storytelling.
Rock on!

Powers melding into personality must be something Oda uses as a recipe. And it isn’t just on devil fruits. Hody was someone whose hatred isn’t his own, and his powers comes from pills, not his own.
Yeah and this might be a stretch but I feel it also plays into what type of fish he was, his hatred led to him viewing fishmen as the superior race so oda made him a Great white shark
other examples (some stretching the logic a bit):
-Blackbeard and his fruit of darkness, which allows him to lure and steal.
-Rob Luccy being part of the so-called "dark justice"
-Gekko Moria controlling the shadows to have dead companions (considering that Kaido killed his ancients and he was now a shadow of what he was)
Well DF's have wills of their own so it makes sense the powers meld with the personality.

"Celestial Toejams" is the most bitter and juvenile insulting nickname and I absolutely love it. It's something my toddler would use.
Easily one of the greatest and most charismatic one piece villains.
It's also fitting that Trebol made Doflamingo a puppet by literally giving him strings.
though given how little doffy cared when tebolhismelf was hurt, it seems trebol wasn't quite as in control as he himself thought.
It's been brought up before. But good observation from her.
+
I absolutely love that his fruit is string and his kingdom is toy. He's literally a MAN CHILD doing whatever he wants and breaking his TOYS.
Also the string thing is 2fold like you mention. He manipulates everything with his strings (physically or not) . But at the same time, he got to where he is mostly because someone was pulling his strings. His dad took him away from Mariejois. Trebol propped him up. He himself was a puppet in a way. And then it's so genius that breaking his strings also SETS OFF MOTIONS OF EVENTS. Because his strings were tieing everything together
Also his quote in MF makes so much sense coming out of HIS mouth.
Merphy: Characters I never wanna see again
OP Fans: homer Simpson backs into bushes
I like to think that there's a 'cosmic order' to who gets which fruit in One Piece. You see it over and over again.
a Merph when it's Napier it's like eddy merphy in a nap to be happier.
I really like how he does genuinely care about his family and is invested in knowing about them, but it's so interesting that the second they stop being loyal to him then he uses these things against them, it's interesting because it's so personal when someone turns their back on him - he shot Cora much the same way as he shot their father, when viola turned on him who had originally signed up to protect her family (specifically her father) he tried to force her niece to kill her, then there's Law who he shot with 3 specifically lead bullets and the scene where he ripped his arm off instead of just killing him there and then (when he easily could have) was just so vicious and kind of a nod to "so you took the op-op fruit from me and now you can remove peoples limbs at will, so can I wanna see"
You can’t blame him for killing a traitor, zoro will probably do it
@@wwe12153 I just love how he's written in the sense that he knows how to get back at anyone who turns their back on him in ways that are like I said so personal he never seems to forget anything whether it happened to him or someone else he knows 'which strings to pull' he really is such a fascinating villain to read
The video on Doucheflamingo, this should be a good one :D Trebol is a slippery snake which I personally hate more than Doffy. Good catch on the similarities between Doffy and BB5. This is a really good video!
That moment when Doffy killed his father though and his father holding Cora sobbing in his arms was just so heart breaking
That is a truly tragic fucking villain
Oh also 1000th comment
The influence of devil fruits on the user is not exclusive to villains, just look at Luffy, he always bounces back.. or ace, he was very hot headed.
I think it’s Great That in many cases we learn about the characters personality through their powers, it saves time for Goda, is funny and helps for some irrational reason with the immersion.
Whitebeard shook the world, Crocodile sucks the life out of the country like his fruit sucks the moisture out of people, Chopper is one of the greatest models of humanity for the series, Enel used his Lightning fruit to become a god, etc.
In some cases, its the opposite like with the original Admirals. Akainu is cold hearted, Aokiji is warm hearted and reasonable, Kizaru is slow minded.
@@vashythewabbit8288 you could also say that Akainu has a hot temper (always angry), and that Aokiji is always cold temper, and is always calm. Meanwhile Kizaru looks slow minded because he is so much faster than anyone and anything else, I mean he is literally light speed. Everything around him must feel super slow, including possibly his own body when he is "normal" (idk im theorising here)

The first time we see how Doflamingo cares about his crew is during punk hazard. Vergo's and Monets' death.
Yeah but he was more than willing to sacrifice them for his own sake
@@Chaosking707 Well, in the manga you only see him sitting next to the window. I know in the anime he is shown smiling, but not in the manga.
Also, Trebol is the one who gave Doffy his DF. He's like "here, eat this DF."
"The cage just keeps getting synched in more and more Everytime he tries to manufacture his own destiny."
That is such a perfect way to put everything doflamingo is and everything he tries to do throughout the story in so many levels. It encapsulates everything from his powers to his position as the broker who manufactures these artificial devil fruits and to his liter self trying desperately to take that control.
Oh no, she's buying merch. Might need a new shelf for all of it when all is said and done.
Once you do dressrosa, you can't stop anymore, there is no more chill "inbetween" chapters its just straight FIRE all the way to where it is now.
That word is a tad bit of a spoiler lol
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Corazon was a nickname/code name for “heart” which a Vergo had and then Roscinate got that code name.
@@audreynothepburn7663 Yes I know, I was at work when I wrote this, my mind blanked, so I went with Corazon instead of Rosciante. From the context of the comment it's clear I wasn't talking about Vergo.
I like how he Symbolizes the literal devil. How he was banished from ‘heaven’ and came down to conquer and control. Also is ironic that he’s the underworld boss, and his devil fruit is literally strings that control people.
He is just like a mafia boss, he treats his subordinates like family, but he doesn't accept betrayal at all.
Family is just a self-serving concept to mafia bosses though, since they aren't above betraying their own people if that would benefit them
@@belphegor649 True, guess I am too attached to the Vito Corleone character, who wasn't a betraying person at all.
That just sounds like an Oda thing not a Doffy thing XD
Thats an interesting idea... I would have just thought the difference comes from how the person thinks of using it
It's confirmed that Zoan users are like that. Their hybrid forms are different depending on the user
Doflamingo is puppet master that doesn't realize he is the puppet all along, and it's poetic.

When Trebol met Doflamingo he presented him the Devil fruit and the gun that doflamingo used to kill his father
This is a great breakdown of doffy's character with so many little details that I completely missed/ have forgotten like the names of doffy's attacks and him reading up on law
Can I just say I'm loving that Law hoodie!
Damn I'm so happy I've known Merphy's reviews for my favorite series. The depth of her analysis is definitely a food for thoughts.
Same! I was thrilled when I saw she was reviewing One Piece. And hearing her POV of certain events and/or characters is always a delight!
I think I speak for most of the one piece community when I say there is never to much content
Doffy's has literally the protag hero tragic backstory, but flipped to be 100% evil villain
"In case you're wondering where my alliances lie." Yessss
I adore Law so much!
Thank you!
I really appreciate that Doflamingo really cares about his subordinates. It makes him a lot more interesting and likeable
I love some of the names you give to stuff in this series. The Not Island and the Celestial Toe-jams. XD
But there is one thing you have to admit no matter how much you hate Doflamingo. He rocks that pink fur.
While luffy would never tell anyone to sacrifice their life or dream for him
wow, I've been reading One Piece for most of my life and you still caught things I'd never noticed before!! Amazing!!
Trebol is the antithesis of all the other found family characters in One Piece, a corrupting influence.

Doflamingo got his devil fruit around his first encounter with Trebol when he was a kid

No need to apologize Miss Murphy Cuz I very much enjoy your content times like this I love listening to different types of perspective of a story or it's character gives lots of insight if you're open-minded & respectful enough to understand . What makes that even better if it's coming from a logical perspective
People don't tend to make mention of this:
Not only was Doflamingo raised to believe he was above "normal" people, but the way in which his family is treated causes him to double down on that belief. People essentially proved him correct (in his eyes.)
I just started watching your channel. It's nice to see someone experience one piece for the first time. I feel like after she gets caught up or gets to wano. She should get involved into the one piece community. It would be nice to see her point of view with the one community on RUclips.
Doflamingo's design is based on French musician Michel Polnareff.
Fans of a certain other manga series might know who else he inspired ;3
How did a french musician inspire a spirit inside of a turtle?

Does that mean doffy's gonna try and open Doflamingo Land 🤔
Does that mean Doffy is going to kill Pekoms under a sheet and get his turtle devilfruit?

Did she notice that vergo and monet is dead yet? Coz she's expecting them to come back
I think she mentioned in her Punk Hazard video that she hopes Monet's death is a classic Oda fake-out.
I don't know if anybody mentioned but Oda also heavenly implied that Doflamingo was piping Viola, I just think it adds even more insult to injury.
