It's wonderful to see and hear two masters like Nev and Richard putting these amps through thier paces like this! I'm not myself in the market right now but there's always a lot to be gained from watching a film like this. Nice one gentlemen! 🌟👍
I always like to see another video from Richard and Nev. I have the 'lowly' 50 watt Mk II, but it suffices for apartment playing which is mostly what I do these days 🙂
Thank you both, that was quite a lot of fun! Great playing and excellent demonstration of capabilities with a clear-eyed discussion about strengths and use-cases. Bravo!
I’ve had 5 different Katanas from the 50 up till the current gen 3 artist and had never had a single malfunction or glitch . The artist is phenomenal and has my tube amps collecting dust .
I used to be a valve snob and there’s not many valve amps I haven’t had in the 50 years I’ve been playing. And to be fair, years ago you didn’t really have much choice the solid state stuff couldn’t get anywhere near the valves in terms of sound or feel. But the gap has narrowed so much now that the line between the two has become blurred. I’m an amp guy always have been always will be that won’t change, I used to have the BOSS MK2 Artist and now I’ve got the Gen 3 Artist and to be fair, I couldn’t be happier. You don’t suffer with sound issues due to old wiring problems at some older venues. When you got a great valve amp it’s not so great when your 2k plus amp sounds amazing at one venue and shocking at the next. I suppose it’s all a trade off but I’ve made the trade and I’m happy.
Very useful video, thanks. I'm probably going to go for the Gen 3 Head, which I'll use through a Peavey 212 cabinet for gigs, and on its own for recording in my home studio.
I'm a hobby player and as far as bang for the buck, three are phenomenal amps. Considering all the "amp models" and a ton of onboard effects. I have the 100 Gen 3, the GAFC switch, a Boss tuner, a TS9 , noise gate, compressor, volume pedal and yeah on my board. Pretty much all I need to emulate my heros.
I’ve been in guitar shops and heard people trying out guitars and thought that’s sounds nice assuming it’s a valve amp and surprised to see it’s a Katana The Artist you can have 3 delays now with delay, delay/reverb and delay in the solo section
These amps are underrated. If you tested people blindfolded half the haters in the comments would get it wrong. I love high end tube amps, but if you sound bad on a Katana you need to spend more time on your playing. Sorry.
I once brought my Katana 50 to an engagement party, it ended up being the speaker for the music through the aux in. Filled the whole venue. I didn’t realise at first… and then I looked at the stage and realised the massive sound was coming out of that little amp… i do not know how Boss have done it, but once dialled in, it can sound phenomenal (talking about guitars now). I use a Roland JC40 though as my main pedal platform amp, but I love the Katana.
That’s a weird n cool story. I play guitar and keys in a cover band and I’ve been using either a Fender Champion 50XL, guitar/pedals in front input and Keyboard through Aux in, or a Positive grid Cab using its two channels . At certain point I feel lacking of power (whole band , mid size gig, no PA reinforcement) Do you think Kat 50 would be loud enough?
Hi, owner of brand new Katana Artist Gen3 here. Is there any way to turn BOOST, MOD, REVERB off or on on the amp itself via the coloured LED switches other than turning the knob for that effect all the way counter-clockwise to zero?. I know I can do this on my EX foot-controller but I would prefer, when I’m tweaking - to be able to switch an fx on or off without affecting the parameter. Is there an option where I can for example long-press one of those buttons just to turn the effect off/on? And which is the best place to submit firmware feature requests?
Nice video, thank you! I have the Artist Gen 3 & the Artist MK 2 - pure beauties:) You can coulpe them up in "Stereo Expand Mode" (for Stereo Delay, Reverb, etc...) BUTTTTTT, the GEN 3 doesn't have "Dual Link" anymore, so you cannot connect them "Dry-Wet" - NOOOOOOO, so sad about that! I also contacted BOSS, but it seems to only be possible with a classic extra AB-Splitter. Anyways super nice Amps in my opinion!
Not that they sound bad, but they somehow have that solid state thing to them. I don’t say that as a tube snob as I use a Tech 21 Trademark amp. The Katana series are good value without a doubt but I wouldn’t give up my Tech 21 for one.
I am down grading from wet dry wet to wet dry as sold on this combination by TPS and trying it. I have a Boss Katana mk1 which given the speaker is more suited to clean I will use as wet and pair it with the Boss Artist gen3, or see what it is like in stereo. How would you set two up?😅😅
Honestly many people who use the katana use it at home and for that it’s pretty good. Personally I prefer simpler amps though. Less option means more playing for me.

Love Richard and Nev’s videos! Killer players, so much lived experience with gear. I trust their opinions and enjoy these reviews!

Very informative, wish you guys would do more videos... great job
I could listen to Richard play all day
Great review guys. I have a 50w mk1 and a 100w mk2 and I love them. That mk3 Artist looks very enticing!
Lord that Knaggs is stunning. Some nice sounds you're getting there chaps.

I'm still sticking to my mk1 100w combo, but this artist sounds very good.
Sounds great, love my Gen 3 100. Very versatile.
Mine is coming today
I don't need one, but now I want one.
Boss Katana Artist Mkii sold.
Boss Katana Head Gen 3 purchased.

How are they underrated? They have outsold every other amp in recent history
Trust me, people know how just how good these amps are!

You have the amp miked, you are also using the line out. What are you running the line out to?
You Guys sound GREAT!!!

I saw Richard on a video recently playing in Tony Hadleys band 👍
Can you compare the 50 to the 100 head 5 inch speaker?
Volume difference and tone?

I wish they would offer the 50 watt version in a head only so I could plug it into a 1X15 cabinet.
I have the 100w gen3 head and I run into a cab rated for 60w. The Katana’s have a 5w, 50w and 100w selector dial to help with this.

I hope you review the new Yamaha Pacifica standard plus.
They are impressive amps.
Would it really cost much more to put a nicer grill cloth on these amps?
GOOD amps! \m/
These sound great until you hear your 'Tone Lounge' LANEY and ORANGE Real Valve amp video's.
50 Ex is the best value.
They sound alright I guess.
Solid state, this is all I need to know😢
Oh come on, you knew that already!
You must be stuck in the 80's. Modern solid state is very different. And this is coming from a guy with four tube amps...
@@hangingchad_ LOL!
There's 1 on EVERY page...
Lotta talk guys 🙄
They are average amps, sound good on low volume ( home appartment level) but they sound shit turned up.
Honestly many people who use the katana use it at home and for that it’s pretty good. Personally I prefer simpler amps though. Less option means more playing for me.
@@samsantanamusic True that, i'd still get a used deluxe reverb anyday over any of these.
