    Nikons with autofocus motor in body / Nikons that can autofocus with either lens: Df, D50, D70, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D500, D7xxx, D6xx, D7xx, D8xx, all flagships (D1, D2, D3, D4, D5). Models derived from those (e.g. D300/D300s, D3/D3x, etc.) also have AF motors.
    Nikons without AF motors / Nikons that can only autofocus with the 50mm f/1.8G and NOT the 50mm f/1.8D: D40, D60, D3xxx, D5xxx.

    Informative. I have both. Would say that 1.8D is significantly better for b&w, particularly on film (haven’t done any proper testing, opinion just based on results).

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 лет назад +3

      I've been using the 1.8D for film a lot lately and image quality aside, I just think that the 1.8D is a more flexible option for Nikon film shooters or those adapting the lens on other manufacturer's camera bodies. Having the aperture ring on the barrel just makes it usable on more bodies.

    The D has an aperture ring that I prefer and the colors seem to be warmer with less contrast. Highlights don't seem to be as washed out with the D version. I prefer the D for those reasons.

    @MrCodyswanson 4 года назад +6

    Good job on the review. The D seems to have slightly more contrast and slightly less barrel distortion in your samples. I’ve owned both and ended up keeping the D version because my Nikon bodies had focus motors and I don’t shoot video. I think if you have a consumer camera that doesn’t have an af motor or if you need the quieter af the G version is the better option.

    I got the 1.8d brand new because it's a lot cheaper and it has warranty. It's plasticky but I would say, after 3 days of use, it's actually sturdy! It's also tigh on the mount. I thought I would break lol. Also, I love the fact that I'm using it fully manual because I have a D3400. The lens is working perfectly but as a beginner, I should stop using F/1.8 because I'm still terrible at finding the right focus! It's always not about getting the shallowest depth of field, people!

    I also noticed the exposure difference between the two. Looks like maybe the G would perform better in low light conditions slightly. When I look at your images it looks like the colors on the D are more saturated and the micro contrast is better. In summary I think your conclusion is right on.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 лет назад

      Like I said, light transmission could’ve been lighter/darker with one of these lenses just in this instance. There is no way of telling if one is transmitting more light without testing multiple of the same lens.

    The 1.8 D can be a little bit slower with AF, and shooting in the dark if there is any pointy lightsource, the inside of the lens will reflect that weird spots on your sensor. The G is more money, but it’s a better choice for me. The 1.8D has one benefit: it goes down to f22, while the G is only to f16. :)

I already have the 50mm 1.8D that I was using with my D3300; I was wondering if, since I bought the D750, I would need a better 50mm. Nice video man! I just purchased the Sigma 18-35. A bit tired of the prime lens as I need to move my tripod for each shot I take. It becomes really cumbersome when I shoot outdoors during winter. Now I need to decide if I want to use it with my Sony A6300 with the MC-11 adapter or with my Panasonic G7 and metabones speed booster which is crazy expensive. What would you do?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  7 лет назад

      Nowadays, I use primes almost exclusively for film and some street photography when I use digital. When I record videos, it's almost exclusively on the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM. Zooms are definitely more convenient. As far as your situation with the Sigma 18-35, tough call but I would personally use it on the A6300. I would take the money savings. The a6300 has a better focusing system but the G7 doesn't overheat. There's pros and cons to both but I would be more comfortable having the a6300 as a main camera between the two.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 лет назад

      I don't think those questions make much sense. I think if you have a lens that lets you autofocus, you'd likely always use autofocus unless there are specific situations that you'd want to manually focus. There's little point in buying an autofocus lens to manually focus since it's not optimized to do so like a manual focus only lens.

    Nikon DXXXX doesnt have internal focusing motor. So if you use the 1.8D, it cannot Auto Focus. However, you still can use it, but with manual focus. Although its not easy, but eventually you will get use to it. But its hard if you shoot with just one hand, for example if you want to shoot something that you need to grab. So you just have one hand to shoot, and its hard.
    However, for 1.8G. It works well with Nikon DXXXX. You also can choose between manual or auto. So if you doesnt satisfied with the Auto, just convert it to manual.
    For image quality, i think both are the same.

      It depends on what you need. The D800 and D810 clearly have more resolving power, so if this is what you need then the D610 is out. Should I get the f/1.8D used or Yongnuo f/1.8 for a D3300. The price is about the same here. The Yongnuo ,from what I've seen, is definitely not as sharp as the Nikkor and does a bit too much chromatic aberration, and while it does have autofocus, it, sincerely, is crap, so I don't know if that autofocus is really worth it. On the other hand, f/1.8D is manual for the D3300, I haven't worked a lot with manual but I guess its not too hard to learn, I'm not into videos at all so not having autofocus shouldn't be too much of a dealbreaker. Ultimately I would get the f/1.8G if the Yongnuo is that bad, although it doesn't look too bad and if I decide the autofocus is essential.

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 лет назад +1

      It sounds like you've already answered your own question and chose what lens to buy. That being said, here are some things to consider. You're correct, the 1.8D will not be able to autofocus on the D3300. You're considering manually focusing with the 1.8D, but manual focus on a modern camera is nothing like manual focus on a camera that's designed to do it. You absolutely can, but the camera is not optimized to do so. With some practice, I'm sure you'll be able to get it down but it won't be the most fun thing in the world to deal with. If it were me, I would just find some extra money and invest in the 1.8G. Sure the Yonhnuo is cheaper, but you already know that it's not that great of a lens. Why waste money on something that you don't really want and will likely result in buyer's remorse.

    • @iv4oooooo
      @iv4oooooo 6 лет назад

      The Upper Left USA Thanks for the reply! With all being said and knowing that this would be my 2nd lens, the one I'm using right now is a Tamron 70-300, Should I get the 35mm or the 50mm f/1.8G? And I think you're right about not byuing the Yongnuo, I still remember to this day how I spent a little bit less on my PC, not making a compromise with anything but the motherboard and I regret it so much now 😁

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 лет назад +1

      I'm one of those people who spend a lot of money when I get into things because I buy quality stuff to begin with. This may be costly at first, but it saves me a lot of money in the long run not having to buy the same thing but better later 👍

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  6 лет назад +1

      As far as 35mm or 50mm f/1.8G, I'm assuming you're talking about the DX 35mm. If so, I would get the 50mm f/1.8G. Being that the 35mm is designed for cropped sensor bodies, if you try to use it on a full frame you'll be forced to crop on the sensor or may not be able to use it at all. If you plan on using crop bodies for the rest of your life, this would be fine. If not, the 50mm f/1.8G would be a better choice. But you also have to remember that any full frame lens you use with the D3300 gets a 1.5X magnification, so it'll be a 75mm equivalent on full frame.

    • @iv4oooooo
      @iv4oooooo 6 лет назад

      The Upper Left USA I guess I'll have my time to think about that, I have no magnification issues, I mean the Tamron does just that, the only problem it has is that it cannot take wider photos, that's why I'm buying a 2nd lens, it also needs one and a half meters minimum focusing distance, which is quite an issue, even outdoors, not even mentioning indoors, its practically not usable there, the F stop is also quite high at 4. So the 35mm sounds like the sensible choice, if I don't buy a full frame dslr. I mean all the benefits a 50mm has over a 35mm are the same ones the 70-300 has over both of these, I just think the wider lens ( which is not so wide at all actually, when you put it on the d3300, it should be like a 50mm on a full frame) is needed. Thank you for your time, the advice is well appreciated :)

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  4 года назад

      There’s a variety of reasons for this. The companies just have different approaches and priorities. Some other 50mm f/1.8 are just better built and have better optical quality. Then there are other cheaper options. It’s not like Nikon’s version is the definition of cheap in this category.
