      @@mishalfatima6865 If you are using a Nikon 3000 or 5000 series and want auto focus, you will want to go for the 1.8 g ... the g cost a bit more but has auto focus built into the lens.

    Thank you so much for your video. I'm a newbie to photography, just purchased a Nikon 55mm/f1.8, and have found it a bit daunting to find the correct settings. Your placement in the upper left corner of each shot with all the numbers, ISO, F, Shutter, etc. was so very helpful. You're the first that I have viewed that has done that. Strangely, it’s a lens I rarely use with digital cameras, mainly because my digital cameras are used for wildlife, landscape, macro or still life studio. But it’s always the first lens, or its equivalent 75mm on 645, that I use when shooting analogue. It’s by far the best lens to learn with in my opinion, but I learnt photography on a 35mm not a cropped sensor. You certainly showed what the lens is capable of and as always a brilliant video with impeccable instructions.

      Thanks for the post/feedback Mark!:) I can appreciate your comment especially with regards to the film based 35 days:). I did the same - while in college, I shot a bunch of weddings to earn extra money (all film based). Technology today brings various introductions which change the landscape - immediate feedback/viewing to determine if the image is acceptable, digital sharing, social media, etc. Shooting with film helps to develop various skills which shine through in the digital age:).

    • @j3r4d54
      @j3r4d54 5 лет назад

      RealWorld I think he’s talking about the fact your shooting a fx lense (full frame 35mm sensor) on your crop sensor body(dx) meaning the 50mm is actually a 75mm lense. This is why anything higher than 7200 will have to shoot in crop sensor or DX mode. Also supposed to multiply f stop by the crop size (but no one does) I’m sure you already know all this, just putting it here bc it REALLY confused me back in the day. Maybe do a video on it since you explain so well.

    I am glad that you mentioned that on an APS C camera the 50 is equivalent to 75 mm. Back in my 35mm days I considered the 50 one of the most useless and boring of lenses. I really did not become truely creative until I got my first 85 mm and some wide angles. My style evolved to using longer lenses and very wide angles. Currently shooting the Z50.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 года назад

      Thanks for the post John!:) Ahhhh yes, the 85mm is a good/solid range for portraits and the 50 on a crop offers a 75 equivalent which is nice:).

    Ok, 2 comments. As a very young man in the marines, we did this lens reversal with our, now, very old and still own and use, Pentax cameras. I had no idea this was even a possibility with my modern Nikon. I have a D3100 and a D750. The 3100 for me is a snap shot play camera, but the 750 is my baby and is with me more often even than my wife.
    #2: Thanks for the music you play. Blue Sky is one of my very few favorites.
    A ps maybe. Best channel on RUclips, thank you for what you do so well.

      Appreciate the post/feedback and thank you for your service to our great country!:) Sounds like you have a good setup. The D750 is a solid/capable full sensor body which has proven to be a staple in Nikon's lineup. Take the D3100 to the field and leverage the D750 for more controlled environments:). I have no sponsors and view integrity and honesty as the cornerstones to my foundation:).

    Awesome video, I almost bought the 50mm a while back but settled on the 40mm Micro 1:2.8G. It's an overall great lens and is just about right between 35mm and 50mm (which helps with the headache between choosing 35mm or 50mm.) It's meant mainly for macro shots but is great for everything else as well. It would be really cool if you made a video on that lens if you have one. Keep em coming!

      Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I may try to get my hands on the 40mm and put it through the paces:). I like the idea of having something in the middle of the 35-50 range along with macro.

    • @Reza-nz2re
      @Reza-nz2re 2 года назад

      That is different lens which good for macro. 35mm good for indoor shot and 50mm is sharper than 35mm and it great for potrait and nice DOF/ BOKEH. So there is no such thing lne lens fits all. If you want to use one lens fits all just use kit lens or zoom lens

    1978...I bought a Minolta Srt 202. Came with a 50mm. For a few years, I "shot" anything and everything. Finally realized the nifty 50 can stop being nifty. My next lens was Minolta 35-70 two step lens. LOVE two step lenses. I shot only slide and that lens was fantastic. Again only so much can be done with a " limited" lens. Bought a Minolta 70- 210 lens. That completed my " kit"...Final lens purchase was a Tokina 400mm. I still have that kit...Hoping...one day..the magic of slide film returns. Print photos just don't have what slides can do. Slide projector on screen..darkened room...Seeing the slides and get a feeling of looking out of a window. Remember those toys that used circular inserts with " slide like images". Insert into the toy, press down a lever and look into the toy as if using binoculars...The bright colorful images

    Hi Mark, Very nice video.
    I have a question here.
    I believe you are mounting 50mm FX type lens on DX body.
    Should I understand that the angle of view with this combination is reduced (to 75mm equivalent)?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 лет назад

    I own the Nikon D3400 and am looking for a 50mm prime lens. Your review of the Nikon lens is convincing; however, I’m wondering about the difference between the f/1.8D and the f/1.8G. Are both compatible with the D3400? Thank you.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 года назад

      Thanks for the post Paul ... I replied to your post on another video/thread and will copy here for others to benefit:
      I use the G model and the reason is this ... the D model does not have an auto focus motor which means the camera body must have an auto focus motor. Both the Nikon D3000 and D5000 series lack an auto focus motor. You can still use the D model on a 3000 or 5000 series body but will not have AF:).

    Appreciate your response.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the post/question Zahid:). After much use, I like them both, however if I had to take just one, I would choose the 50:). The 50 on a crop sensor (1.5) is the equivalent of 75 on a full sensor, and I find this to be a good distance for me:). I like to have a bit more reach and find this to be a great distance for portraits. As I demonstrated in my 35 video, you can still use the 35 for portraits but need to be a bit closer - not a huge deal but something to note:).

    I am wanting to get a new lens for my Nikon D3400 for portrait photography. I have gotten sucked into the worm hole of looking at lenses for hours. I know there is a fixed 35mm in a DX version and a FX version. I am leaning more towards a DX version because I am worried about the crop factor, BUT I really want the fixed 50 but I only see it available in the FX version. Do you feel the crop factor using the fixed 50 makes it more difficult to do portraits compared to a fixed 35 in the DX version? I am looking for some guidance on what to purchase. Thank you, keep up the great videos!

      Thanks for the post/feedback/question Morgan:). Nikon makes a fixed 50 DX version BUT it does not have built-in AF ( amzn.to/2uNMoz7 ). I have both the DX and FX versions and both are solid. The DX on a D7000 series works great at the AF system is built into the body. Unfortunately, the 3000 nor the 5000 series have AF in the body which means the lens much have AF in order to support AF:). I created a portrait video using the 50 DX on a D7000 which can be found here - ruclips.net/video/Dun-ANF5evQ/видео.html ... Nonetheless, you can easily using the FX version on crop sensor without any issues as I did in this video on the fixed 50 ... do not be worried about the crop factor - like, not worry at all in my opinion:). The 35 is a great lens as well (not certain if you caught my review on that lens but I had a good time with it). The decision should come down to preference on zoom length. Hope this helps!:)

    • @SwapnilVatsa
      @SwapnilVatsa 6 лет назад +3

      35mm is designed for DX still crop factor applies. Doesn't matter if it's dx or fx... Crop factor applies for every lens you put on

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the post/question Minche:). Swapnil is correct - any lens attached to a crop sensor body (like the D3400, Canon T6i, Sony a6500, etc.) will create a 1.5 crop factor (Canon is technical 1.6). If you attach a 50mm lens to a crop body, you will get 75mm. Nikon's 50mm lens featured in this video is built to fit both the full and crop sensors which is good:). If you place a lens made for crop sensors only on a full sensor body, you will get a black frame to some extent. This is because the lens is not intended to cover the size of a full sensor. If you place a lens made for a full sensors on a crop sensor body, not a problem:). Hope this is helps!:)

    Mark, why do you use very high shutter speed sometimes (like 1/4000) when shooting something inert, e.g. a flower in a pot? And why do you use a significantly slower shutter speed (1/800) when shooting your friend diving into the pool? I would have done the opposite in such situations! I'm confused.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the post and great observation!:) I had to go back and take a closer look at both shots ( flower pot - ruclips.net/video/e2TZVu7yZig/видео.html ... pool - ruclips.net/video/e2TZVu7yZig/видео.html ). Re the flower pot - I suspect I took a shot before immediately before this one in a relatively dark shadow causing me to raise the ISO and I simply forgot to bump the ISO down. Judging by the light in the shot, this could/should have been set to 100:). Re the pool shot - I felt the 1/800 is the slowest I would go to stop motion in this situation. I had to raise the ISO to 3200 in order to achieve 1/800. In order to go any faster I would have needed to raise the ISO to something higher and I wanted to keep the noise at a minimum if at all possible:).

      Thanks for the post/feedback Annada and glad to be of help/inspiration!:) I also have an older Nikon fixed 50 (D version) which works great on Nikon bodies that have an AF motor like the 7000 series. If you connect the D version to the 3000 or 5000 series, you will be forced to manual focus. Manual focus is fine and works well but can be a challenge on cameras without focus peaking (focus peaking is when parts of the scene highlight when in focus):). Hi. I'm going to buy this camera tomorrow and your channel, I can tell, is going to be instrumental to my success. I'm very new to this. One glaring question that I have, though, is this: Not much seems to change with the lighting or motion, but the shutter speed varies a lot in a lot of your demos. Is that the camera automatically adjusting, or is that you? If it's you, I have no idea how I'd know what to set the shutter speed at. Thanks in advance for your help.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the post/feedback/question Kayla and welcome to the channel!:) I shot is aperture priority (A on the dial). This allows the camera to control the shutter speed to maintain a proper exposure. Depending on the given scene, the shutter speed will vary. If the shutter speed ever falls below 1/60th of a second, I like to open the aperture more and/or increase the ISO:).

    Your videos have sold me on the 3400 as my first DSLR. I'm interested in picking up a 50mm lens to take some city street night shots during an upcoming vacation. However am I correct in that I need to purchase the more expensive version of this lens that comes with an auto focus motor due to the 3400 not having one built in? Or can I get by with manual focus? My budget is quite tight so this has become a dilemma. Thank you for your informative videos.

    Back in the daze of film, I had a Nikon 85mm F1.8 prime. It was the most beautiful lens for general portrait. This 50mm prime on a DX camera body gives a 75mm equivalent shot; so pretty close to that old 85. This lens, as shown in this vid, is really good for portrait but closing down to F16 should give really good depth of field too for garden shots or forests, groups etc. My old 85mm back in the day was a top line expensive lens but this 50mm G lens is quite affordable given that all photographic gear does cost you more than bubblegum money. The ability to distinguish subject from background with this lens is tops. The Alabamie Kid.

    I have the D3400. It came with the 18-55. The focal length wasn’t long enough for sports, so my second lens was the AF-S Nikkor 55-200 f/4-5.6G VR.
    The next lens had to be a portrait lens and which would work better for that. The fixed 35, fixed 50 or an 85. I chose the Nikkor 1.8G 50mm Prime. It is an FX for full frame and works very well on the cropped sensor bodies. If I decide to upgrade the camera to full frame body, I’ll have a prime lens for it.
    The photographs I’ve taken are spectacular. Love the bokeh. Best purchase! I always carry the fixed 50 and the 55-200 in my bag. This video really shows how wonderful the images are.

    FYI - Nikon actually makes an adapter for reverse mounting your Nikkor lens. It's called a BR-2A, and might still be available new, I believe. Otherwise, easy to find on the used market. Since this adapter dates back to AiS and older Nikkors, it is made specifically for lenses with the standard-at-the-time 52mm filter threads. However, with an appropriate step up ring, any lens can be mounted, including the G versions. However, I would not recommend using a G lens since it has no aperture ring. Anything from the AF-D version backwards will work much more efficiently.
    Furthermore...Nikon used to recommend 50mm and wider lenses for better performance as opposed to longer length lenses in reverse. In fact, the optical quality in reverse mount is always better than mounting the lens correctly. Go figure...

      Thanks for the post/feedback Laura!:) I use Lightroom for post editing and used it to pull color on this picts. I created a few videos on Lightroom and plan to create more (i.e. ruclips.net/video/nkh78JifdVc/видео.html ). I will add pulling color using Lightroom as I suspect others will benefit as well:). Regarding a relative good budget zoom lens for wildlife? I might suggestion the Nikon 70-300. A good zoom range and relatively affordable (look to buy one new; the 70-300 was also shipped with many kits and you might find someone willing to sell it). I created a review on it which might be of some help - ruclips.net/video/1RaXjNuD6ls/видео.html

      RealWorld Thank you for the quick reply. I will start learning more about Light room I use Adobe CC for work and have access to Lightroom. I like the way I can tweak the picture and view the image info for future reference. The D3400 came with two lenses. The AF P 70-300 which I am getting amazing photos. I would like a little more reach to capture birds and such. Do you have a telephoto lens you like to use for wildlife photography? Amazon and eBay are flooded with the 600mm lenses for less than $200. What is the deal with those lenses? Not sharp pictures? Just curious.
      Thanks again for helping the amature photographers become pros.

      Hi Laura and glad to be of help!:) The 600mm are interesting ... not the best quality but miiiiiight be used to capture the moon:). For the money, may not be bad to have although I have not personally used one. I am not certain it would produce good enough quality for birds although if you have a bunch of light and bird is still, you might be a good shot - just my two cents:).

    @RealWorld absolutely amazing video and even better photos! Thanks to you i have learnt a lot of photography, and some great tips you pointed out before when I asked helped a lot! so far I got kit lens (18-55mm), 35mm f1.8 and recently purchased 55-200mm f1.4. Hope you can do some review's and tips with 35mm. One question i was wondering, the black and white trick and pulling out 1 of colours of a photo, the image processing you are doing, is it on ur camera or some PC software? i.e photoshop-lightroom or some third app.
    Cheers and looking forward to your next video!

    Love the channel, excellent content! Out of curiosity, what's your recommendation for a good wide angle lens, and macro lens for the D3400? Thanks!

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the post/feedback - you got me thinking!:) For macros I like the Tonkina AT-X 100mm f/2.8 ( amzn.to/2sxxZnU ), however it does not have auto focus built into the lens. You can use it on the Nikon 3000 series and 5000 series but will need to manually focus which is not a bad thing for macros in my opinion. The lens is solid and relatively affordable for macro lenses. Another good/solid choice albeit more pricey is the Tamron 90mm ( amzn.to/2HeBghi ). This lens has auto focus built-in and will work fine on both crop and full sensors:). I might suggest the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 ( amzn.to/2xule30 ) ... a great solid all around lens but not suited for full frame (full frame will cost double or more the price:)).

    Another great video! Thanks man. You actually sealed the deal for me on getting the d3400 about a month ago. I was hesitant at first and even debated if I should return it and get the Rebel t6 to save nearly a 100 dollars and get a 50mm lens. But the camera is so good. And now I'm attached now. Definitely will get the 50mm for my first lens. I like your style.
    ps+ You got some decent photoshop skills. Mind making a tutorial on how you approach some of those edits. Thanks!

      Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Good call on keeping the D3400 over the T6 in my opinion:). The fixed 50 is great for many reasons as shown in this video. Hi! I’m ordering this lens tomorrow through Amazon. I’m also ordering lens filters for this lens and for the 70-300mm and the 18-55mm lenses that came with the D3400 camera. Any recommendations from Amazon? Thanks for your input. Didn’t you mention something about a neutral density filter for waterfalls?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the post/question Diane:). Since you asked, I will give you my take on filters (just my two cents:)) ... at one time I used polarizers and various other basic filters, but today I use nothing:). I might suggest a lens hood in place of a filter (I use a lens hood whenever possible). One of the primary reasons for any given basic filter is to protect the lens/glass. A simple lens hood should do the trick and help prevent lens flare:). Quick note - a ND filter is a different story and servers a more specific purpose (ND - neutral density). ND filters can be used to slow your shutter during a daylight scene to capture flowing water for example (as I did on my recent photo adventure video). Hope this helps!:)

    • @dianecrumbley90
      @dianecrumbley90 5 лет назад +1

      How about just a clear one to protect the lens itself? Thanks for answering by the way. I’m excited to order this tomorrow.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад +1

      @@dianecrumbley90 Glad to be of help:). If you go down the path of filters, I might suggest the Hoya UV filter. This was well rated on various tests and seems to be well received by most who use it - amzn.to/2AAYbmr ... front glass can surprisingly take lots of abuse (not that I recommend it:)). Even a small scratch is not detectable on an given shot in my experience (again, just my two cents:)). The given UV filter should give you peace of mind and work well though. The link is to the 55mm which I believe will fit the 18-55 lens but you will want a different size for your 70-300:).
