Powerline Meadows

  • The adaptability of Mother Nature is incredible. Sometimes wildlife can actually gain a habitat in the most unlikely places! I have to admit it took me a bit to get my mind around the benefit of preexisting power lines but while exploring Power line runs (the cleared forest areas along the power line "right of way" as it is called) I have been finding fantastic meadow habitats. Now this is not true in all power-line locations as it depends on how the area is kept, but when they are allowed to form a wild meadow it creates a fantastic habitat for all sorts of wild species and most importantly insects. This is important and something I believe environmental groups should help keep an eye on. All the great migrating species from Monarchs to Bluebirds can benefit from the vast wildflowers pollinating in the area, The trick is "not" to use any chemicals and only to cut the foliage in the late Autumn allowing wild families to take advantage of the habitat. I like the thought that with a little "common sense" we can actually get a huge benefit. Of course in a perfect world we wouldn't need the power lines but since they are already here, perhaps we can use them to the benefit of wild species promotion and "green highways".

This is such a good idea--wildlife corridors under power lines, and working with power companies to advocate for non-poisonous management of vegetation under the lines.
