  • I am loving learning to play my new Low D Whistle.
This practice reminder reinforces the skills we discussed in our first lesson.
We learned how to hold our hands so we can cover the tone holes on the whistle, and so our fingers can remain relaxed. We also talked about how to blow into the whistle as well as playing the notes on the bottom octave.
Please join me on this exciting journey.

Hi! I just bought a low whistle (tony dixon) I play flute and tin whistle and i thought it would be easy to me to play low whistle (i was wrong hhaah) I have to practice like a child to finger all holes in the good way ( the last one is like a pain in the neck) I think your videos are very helpful ^^ Greetings from Spain!

Hello in Spain! Where are you in Spain? As a long time saxophone player I also expected I would pick up the low D faster. There are many aspects of playing that are consistent, but the whistle is definitely a different instrument. I do enjoy the challenge of continuing to learn the many nuances of playing. Thank you for your encouragement. Estoy aprendiendo español, pero todavía tengo mucho que aprender.

Hi just found your channel I bought a low whistle in one piece aluminium any advice or just follow you on your . I was a saxophone player and play guitar but no experience with whistle. I was told to start on smaller whistle but I like the low whistle far more and I confess I’m inpatient lol😊

Excited to have you on the journey, and welcome! Wig playing the sax I was also drawn to the low whistle. Well done on playing both guitar and sax. Your brain lets your fingers do very different things.
I do want to say, please follow, but as a sax player I’ll first say set aside thoughts of embouchure. The lower octave is played with slightly less air pressure than the upper octave. Play like a low octave E and increase your air pressure until the tone breaks into the second octave. As a sax and guitar player you’ll have a good sense of listening to tone quality. Don’t worry if notes above the second octave G are rough for a few days or weeks.
I provide music free to download. Try a few tunes, especially some slower ones to get the feel. Dawning of the Day, Return from Fingal, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow would be good starting tunes.
Then begin experimenting with ornaments and expression, I have some ornament videos, and I’ll be posting a consolidated one in a week or so.
Hope his helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m very happy to try and help.
