When enough of you keep asking me the same questions I try to listen...and normally thats about MARS FPGA...but today its SuperSega FPGA...or Super Sega FPGA depending on where you read the name; a new FPGA gaming device ala MiSTer FPGA that is promising Sega Dreamcast FPGA cores along with Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Master System and more! But is it real? Can they pull it off? What gaming hardware is it using? Because we already have up to the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core working today...so that's SuperSega FPGA all about? Or Super Sega FPGA that is? Will it play the best Sega Dreamcast games? Will it be a Dreamcast console?
and now more details have emerged including a Super Sega FPGA price as well as other interesting bits of information like when you should expect to see a prototype
But there are a ton of Dreamcast hidden gems, NAOMI hidden gems, IGS PGM hidden gems...and more! So playing them in FPGA one day in the future could totally be fun!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

Makes MARS look like a released product in comparison.
Been waiting on mars to show more so I can run a vid on that
@@VideoGameEsoterica They wanted to show it on toomanygames as far as I remember, but I didnt see a lot of information since then. I am concerned about the concept shifting to what the polymega wanted to be with this modular design. I really hoped for a more arcade focused platform with integrated jamma and more power than the MisterFPGA. At the moment I am not very optimistic about the whole project.
I see no reason to talk about or bring attention to projects like this until there is a demo of a working prototype.
It’s interesting to talk about whatever happens imo
Not if it gets people to invest in a Kickfarted
I don’t think anyone would watch this video and think it was a good thing to invest in currently
Actually, talking about this as soon as possible is incredibly important. This company are putting out press pieces and making outlandish claims. This is the perfect RUclips channel, with tons of FPGA knowledge to give their opinion of what and what is not reasonable to expect or what is actually feasibly possible with current tech
Appreciate that :)
Let's see. Promising impossible performance: Check.
Switching from FPGA to Hybrid Emulation the second someone points out impossible specs: Check
Statements morph from "Will do X day one!" to "These are aspirational goals": Check
Using random, unrelated pictures of (what they thought) were obscure electronics in press release: Check
Hyped by Damien McFarren. Check.
Using a trademarked name without permission (but saying "we're in discussions"): Check
"Clarifications" still don't explain nonsense specs (dvd burner): Check
Anyone who gives these guys "preorder money" after the RetroVGS, Coleco Chameleon, PolyMega, and Amico...sigh.
It does have those vibes but I don’t know about “hybrid emulation”. It’s still FPGA except for needing the 32x attached. But that makes me wonder how that even works? Since the 32X needs to feed signals to a Genesis…how does an FPGA Genesis and a physical 32X work together? 🤷🏻♂️
@@VideoGameEsoterica Not to mention voltages need to be exact.
That’s not too hard for a good elec engineer
@@VideoGameEsoterica True, but so many modern repros and modern cart releases for retro consoles are poorly made and fry consoles due to wrong voltages, so few get it right.
Diff between a good engineer and an engineer lol
Think about the inputs and outputs on the back of a physical 32x and then think about what they're saying about how it will supposedly work with this. They don't know what they're talking about. This is not legit.
That is a confusing bit for sure
Your not interested in giving them 400 bucks for a preorder then,,,
I don’t think many would be without like maximum proof of concept demos
@@VideoGameEsoterica Hope not, gamers keep getting fleeced.
@@Wobble2007you're dead right about that. Look at the state of modern gaming, an utter joke. This is slowly trickling into the retro market too.
Please try to cover the Brazilian GF1 console as well, if you can.
I will for sure in the future
2024 FPGA trolling
Possibly 🤷🏻♂️
@@VideoGameEsoterica by the way are you still interested in Saroo? a new FW dropped a few days ago, the compatibility is very good now
@shain6946 I’ll check it out. Thanks for the heads up
Hard to make an opinion on the price without knowing what it is capable of.
Indie devs seem to create new games for Genesis and Dreamcast, so it would be fun to experience them on this device
People are making new Genesis and Dreamcast games here and there
You might be interested in another Sega FPGA console, the GF1 Neptune, because it’s planned to have a store full of homebrews
@reesetube I’ll cover that one soonish
That title card went hard af!
Would rather a model 1 and 2 fpga
Don’t leave poor Model 3 out haha
Ah yeah. Throw that in too please
👍
Would you also like a kitchen sink FPGA?
Does it play Sonic Adventure?
It seems really weird to release a project this niche and expensive and then just skip the 32x.
Yeah I’m not sure on that one either
It also seems like it would be easier and cheaper to just create a 32X FPGA core rather than implementing the functionality via the original hardware using overlayed analog video signals (I guess you don't get any 32X over digital outputs).
I mean it’s possible they just throw a port on the back and tie that into some GPIO or something. Not out of the realm of possibilities
Seems super ambitious and the fact that they think Sega would be interested makes it seem very questionable
That was a very odd part of the interview
I'll believe it when I see it
Bout the long and short of it
Man, OOF...
Not that anything for this project has been substantive yet, but I've gotta throw a little shade at that case design, that's the kind of rough draft that shouldn't have seen a public release.
It’s a vibe. I can’t say I love but I’m im 100% more interested in what’s inside the case
I remember being hyped about people attempting the FPGA NAOMI/Dreamcast but I didn’t expect it to become the GTA6 of this scene 😅.
Lot of groups going for the brass ring but so far all we have seen is paper
Having the disc tray on the side seems kinda inconvenient ngl
Idc as long as it works tho lol
Haha lotta space between sentences here
@@VideoGameEsoterica lol
That is really not how to present a project. You should have a previous work like a prototype or something. Then you could ask for support or whatever
Exactly
There's not a lot any of us can say at this point that isn't obvious. My main three points: 1) As long as they don't try to crowd-source, I'll root for them 2) For most people, a Pi 4 or Pi 5 is something that can do what this promises already at an under $100 price point. 3) A real dreamcast is under $100 and you can hook it up VGA... what is the point?
I’m not saying this will happen or won’t happen. All signs point to it won’t. But…I’m of the school of thought of “does there need to be a point”? Basically…if they pull it off awesome. One more way to play
@@VideoGameEsoterica Great perspective, which is why I keep watching your videos! Maybe because I'm 55 (jaded and experienced), I see efforts like this as a "show me first" because too often they don't pan out. Big claims with nothing to show along with fund raisers are big red flags in the retro gaming community. It sure is fun to watch though. :)
Yes I am very “words are cheap” in these instances. Have two games playable? Show us. Otherwise why say it
They're going to pitch a product to Sega that only runs Dreamcast backups in that functionality? That sounds like a tough sell.
Just a bit
Sigh. And I thought MARS was a pipe dream.
I mean who knows 🤷🏻♂️ either SuperSega won’t happen or they will surprise us all
@@VideoGameEsoterica If I were a betting man, I'd bet on the former vs. the latter. 😁
I wouldn’t bet against you
The fact they approached SEGA about this just proves that they dont know what they are doing.
Why would SEGA ever agree to a device that enables you to play their entire back catalog without paying them for the licence.
I mean, it this became an FPGA console where you can buy games through a service to run on it, that would be a different thing. But why would SEGA not just not make this themselves?
This is just insane and makes no sense. It would be like DOLPHIN asking Nintendo if it would be OK to sell a console that played every Nintendo game.
Nintendo already technically sell that product and its called a Nintendo Switch.
If SEGA wanted to make a console that played all their games, they would just do that.
Their logic seems to be "they didn't seem to mind back when we launched a site using their name in 2002 and we uploaded all of their gaming library so they probably won't mind this."
@@rars0n So they're delusional, got it.
@@novelezra Yup.
Would be nice for Sega to get involved with this in some way but I doubt it.
Me too
This is like Chinese to me but I love it, I had a Dreamcast back in the day - Don’t get why Sega won’t release a remastered version of it
I’m sure they’ve done market research and the math says not worth it yet
Thank god its not Nintendont.....
Another very interresting video
I really want my Dreamcast Era back ❤
Dreamcast era was the best
@@VideoGameEsoterica ❤️
The MISTer community has gone wildly off-course. We have hoaxes in the form of this and MARS. Pramod keeps his cores away from MISTer... it's a long way from the straightforward and awesome thing it once was.
But that’s not the “MiSTer Community”. The community around MiSTer is just plugging away doing cool new stuff weekly
@@VideoGameEsoterica
Well, I consider Pramod a part of the 'community'. The others are debatable. I just wish the nonsense would stop. That is assuming it is nonsense.
When things get “big” they splinter. Every damn retro gaming “thing” does this. Just how it is
I agree on the mist splintering being a bit discouraging. tho I don't lump this particular device into being mist related at all. It's just an FPGA gaming device
I kind of always saw this project as a proof of concept for a REAL release in the coming years. Unless YOU have an extra $500 just sitting in your wallet
That's the ugliest mockup I've seen. You'd think they'd put the cartridge slots like a Hyperkin.
For me it’s not a pretty design but I am way more interested in what’s inside
I'll be genuinely shocked if they actually get Sega to agree to make it an officially licensed device. Would be cool, but I think it's a near zero chance of happening.
Basically total zero
True
GD-ROM is readed by faking TOC read of the drive, not very trivial for everyday use (you have to swap discs …)
I really doubt they can write specialized firmware to do that …
It’s a major hurdle for sure
Offtopic but Sinden now has Mister support.
I saw. I’d do a vid but I have GUN4IR and can’t really justify buying a Sinden just for a vid
All I really care about is if they’re able to replicate Dreamcast in FPGA we already have everything else stated with mister FPGA… aside from it being able to read the actual games.
It’ll be interesting to see
Can't wait for all bare metal analogue consoles to be available in FPGA (everything up to the Wii), once you get past that, consoles with complex operating systems and digital DACs, software makes more sense, or at least for the most part, you could argue the launch 360 was a nearly bare-metal analogue console, as the OG Blades OS gad a tiny footprint and it used an analogue DAC via VGA or component for HD mode or RGB & S-Video for SD mode, same for the PS3 of course (used a very light OS aka the XMB), so at the very least 7th gen would benefit from hybrid FPGA/ARM emulation, or maybe even FPGA/X64 combination.
Yes anything past Dreamcast is more “is it even worth doing”
Knowing modern sega they are waiting until this thing is released to only then sue them for the name so they go broke.
Haha could be
I'll bet You, Sega would've trusted M2 as usual rather than these guys for handling emulated / FPGA retro titles anyway. 😅
🤣
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thaaanks 👍😆
Id rather have an FPGA device develop by Sega itself.
I wonder if any gaming company will ever get into retro released consoles with FPGA
what's the intro music please? i recognise it
Twinkle Cart (Twinkle Park) - Sonic Adventure [OST]
See below
Nailed it
why not just make fpga dreamcast replacement board with hdmi, usb, memory card etc that you can put in your dead dreamcast shell?? instead of making this one in all mess.
That’s not a terrible idea
No 32X compatibility?
Keep watching :)
I went off on a rant, on a certain other fruit martial artist's channel, as I am wont to do when I don't sleep enough and I stress myself out pointlessly w/ jobby job. But to keep it short: no. My bet is it's a scam. The guy's online history doesn't make his track record look very good at all. As best as I can tell, this wouldn't even be his first public preorder scam. But we'll see.
Haha you can say Pixel Cherry Ninja here. We’re friends
You said this would never happen because it was too complex
I don’t recall saying that at all?
@@VideoGameEsoterica but you did a video on "the future of 6th gen emulation and is it possible".
You said it wouldn't happen for an extremely long time or may never happen because of complexity, yet here we are.
That was GameCube / PS2 / Xbox. Not DC
@@VideoGameEsoterica true good point but DC is technically gen 6, just the weakest of the 4.
You did still say DC emulation was either far off or unlikely, in that video
Saturn
PS1
N64
Are gen 5
@berrymckockiner5883 Dreamcast is more like 5.5 imo
Is anything real, Anthony? Am I a man dreaming about being a butterfly? Or am I the butterfly, dreaming about being a man?
It’s as real as the paper it’s written on
Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to strawberry fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry fields forever
🤣
A 20 k fpga board to have a dreamcast? Makes no sense. ☮️
They said 200K
So no sega card slot for master system, or sg-1000 card games or the 3d glasses adapter?
🤷🏻♂️
@@VideoGameEsoterica you think since they expect you to use a real 32x on this thing that the power base converter will work so we can still use the 3d ?
I have no clue what they are thinking. Every new detail just means more 🤷🏻♂️
Hmm everything seems overly complicated.
@ Supporting Dreamcast GDROM
@ Hardware 32x required 😐
It does feel like it’s promising everything but also paper thin on actual details
Cannot be real, surely?!
🤷🏻♂️ gotta see working hardware
Why? Just buy the original consoles, keep it fresh with cap kits and repairs and of you go
People like options
I sense vaporware, honestly.
It has those vibes

Come back in 2 and a half hours and hear my thoughts haha. New vid on it
I will stick with my MiSTer fpga it's good enough, we might get a Dreamcast core in the future.
Def not on MiSTer. Maybe a MiSTer 2 one day
MiSTer would struggle with just the Yamaha Super Intelligent Sound Processor, a powerful chipset on its own, AICA @ 67 MHz
and ARM7 @ 45 MHz, let alone the Hitachi CPUs and PowerVR GPU.
Yes it’s just not possible on MiSTer
No thanks I will stick with my De10 nano
A fair decision
🚩🚩🚩🚩
Just a couple
Bummer about the 32x
An odd decision
I'll believe it when I see it
But will we see it?
You'd have to I can't be the only person to see something 🙃
