  • In this episode I will be configuring the D21 KA24E factory 5W71C "short" transmission to accommodate the SR20DET engine using the SR bellhousing and SR shifter link extension. I will show that you can adapt an SR/KA/CA/RB20 short throw shifter to the rear section of the D21 transmission. Episode 9 will be the mounting of the SR.

    Hi, I'm searching stronger and cheap gearbox for my worn gearbox in my SR20det (about 320hp). Friend of mine told that somehow is possible to use this d21 gearbox. And do you have any knowlege about it? I see that the gearbox from d21 is shorter, but the front should fit well with SR20 gearbox bell housing. But how about rear end, or it's reallly just swap front section and put to sr20det housing? Thanks in advance for any advise :)

    What is the part called that allows the short shifter to work called?

      The selector bracket, as I called it, is actually called "Arm Control; Striking Rod" by Nissan, and the part number is: 32844-V5002
      However, it is discontinued. Even the supersessions are discontinued. The best bet is just to source a blown s-chassis transmission being sold for parts.

    Great video bro. I’ve just picked up a ‘94 D21 Hardbody. Runs like a clock, but there’s a ton of play in the shifter. The inner silicone boot/dust cover is broken too. I’m struggling to find part names and numbers. I’m wondering if you’ve found an upgrade kit with maybe leather/leatherette boot covers for the 4 wheel drive and 5 speed shifters? Also do you have a reference for the names of the bushings or a manual with a breakdown technical diagram of the parts with the names and part numbers. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Cheers from the west coast of Canada! 🙏🏼🇨🇦⚓️

    Wow, so doing this you didn't have to mess with the drive shaft right? I blew the trans in my truck and have an extra 240trs and was wondering if I could just rip them apart and swap parts over to keep the stock D21 case.

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  3 года назад

      Yes you can do this without having to mess with the driveshaft.
      This video is for people that want to drop an SR20 into their D21 without having to mess with the factory trans mounting or driveshaft.
      You can swap some parts around between D21 and 240sx transmissions. The internals are almost identical except for the input/output shaft lengths and gear ratios. The D21 transmission and rear case are physically shorter than a 240sx trans and rear case; the internal shafts reflect that.
      The transmission in this video is a D21 transmission and rear transmission case with an SR20DET bellhousing swapped to it.
      You CANNOT swap the 240sx transmission into the D21 case. It will not work. All you can do is swap bellhousings and internal parts around.
      The rear case has to match the transmission. The bellhousing is the only case part that is interchangeable.
      Hope this helps.

    Bit of a long shot but do you by any chance have the part number for the sr20 gear shifter bracket that you swapped out, I'm in the process of doing a floor shift conversion on my td27 d21 using a ka24de gearbox however the box didn't come with the bracket that is required, I'm using a sr20 short shifter for the gear selector side of things so I believe I need the longer of the two brackets 🤔

    • @Inner_Sanctum

      To clarify:
      This is only for SR/240sx KA short throw shifters with the integrated bases like the GKTech, B&M, ISR, and so on. You can install a different style short throw shifter on the D21 by using the simple lever style kit like the P2M or Megan Racing ones and toss all the rest of the bits in the trash. That's the way most people do it in their D21's. Most people just run the modified lever and that's it.
      How I did it:
      You will need to remove the tail section [rear case] of your transmission to get the old D21 [short] bracket out and new SR/240sx KA [long] bracket in. Unfortunately, that's the only way to remove and install the bracket. Even if you remove the shifter return springs and the two roll pins and try to spin the bracket out, it will hit the inner raised edge of the tail section. So after you have the tail section pulled back, you will be able to remove the two roll pins with punches. I put a rag under them and had a magnet rested to catch them when they fell. From there you can remove the old bracket and install the longer unit. Then reinstall the two roll pins. Hit the larger one in about a 1/4 of the way, then start installing the second smaller roll pin and drive them both flush. After that, I used the longer SR spring that goes in the hole to hold down the ball detent for the shifter return mechanism. Then I used some gray RTV and bolted the plate down finger tight, waited for partial cure, then torqued the shifter plate down.
      Hope that helps!

      Inner Sanctum clear as day. Thanks for that. I have the same style short shifter, and will, like you, be doing the KA D21 trans to keep the stock mounting location and stock driveshaft.

      Honestly, I just tell anyone to run whatever they are comfortable with. Gear oils today are WAY more advanced and can be used in a wide array of vehicles without issues.

    How do you like the gktech short throw with the stiffer springs?

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  4 года назад +1

      So, I have run B&M shifters for the better part of 10 years in all my S-Chassis and R-Chassis cars. I was a bit skeptical about the GKTech shifter. However, I installed one for my friend in his 240sx and it felt decent enough. It was time to buy another shifter, so I decided to get the GKTech shifter and springs since I had good luck with a few of their other products on my cars. Honestly, I can barely tell a difference between the GKTech and my beloved $300 B&M. They both have a similar throw, both have that notchy engagement with the smooth feel. Neither rattle, and dare I say... the GKTech is quieter. As far as the springs go, I'm running the medium spring configuration and it barely makes a difference. I tried multiple configurations to see if there's a difference, and it's negligible. If anything, it would probably make the shifter pop out of gear easier if your synchros are worn. Speaking from personal experience, the springs are just not worth spending money on. The caps look cool though. haha

    • @Inner_Sanctum

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  4 года назад +1

      @@smokey__9468 okay, so this video shows me using the D21 transmission [D21 transmission and D21 tail section] with the SR bellhousing only. So regardless of what bellhousing you are running, if you want to put the GKTech short shifter on the D21 KA transmission, you have to follow the steps shown in the video. You will still need to remove the cases to allow you to swap out the D21 KA [short] selector arm bracket for an SR or 240sx KA [long] selector arm bracket.
