CD009 Dowel Pin Issue | Any Suggestions? - SR20 D21 Drift Truck Build

  • The CD009 - SR20DET adapter plate I bought did not come with provisions for alignment dowel pins. This has me worried that I will end up destroying components. An improperly aligned gearbox could easily destroy the pilot bushing, transmission input shaft bearing, and/or the clutch disc itself. None of these things are acceptable in my opinion. I think I already know the answer, but I do have the habit of overthinking things sometimes. Let me know what you think!

    I think you should try the SR/KA for now and take your time with the other transmission. You'll get the pleasure of getting the truck running sooner, testing the hybrid trans and taking your time making sure the other trans is installed right!

    Could replace the bolts with shoulder bolts, but since you take attention to detail just pull it out and get it drill and have peace of mind

    Pull the cd009 and fix it properly when you can.
    Chuck your hybrid trans in and get it running.
    Did you say sr20 gearset in it? That should hold up fine for a while anyway with how light the truck is and not a massively torquey set up.
    Awesome build, great to see new updates.

    You aren't overthinking it, you're just thinking about it rationally. I'm the same way. I research the %$#@ out of everything before spending unnecessary money or making really big mistakes. Either way you have to pull the trans. I say, put the SR/KA drive train in and get the truck running and take your time getting the CDO09 sorted. I think it would keep momentum going.

      100% true. Right now I feel like I have the time, and energy, to really tackle this thing. Just going to pull it out, pop the other trans on, and do it right.

    I like the story of the hybrid transmission that you set up. It looks clean and you have what you need to fit it right. Bolt it up and have some fun with that beautiful truck. It will give you a nice stable platform to test all of the suspension work you did. :)

      Yeah, he's growing like a weed man!
      You're right, it would drive me nuts not doing it the right way. I think, for the sake of getting everything else knocked out, I will just pop the other trans on for now. Then I will spend time getting the adapter all sorted and just swap the CD009 in on a random weekend. I can take all the measurements now to have the driveshaft made and just get everything ready for the swap.

    Just bolt the plate to the bell housing and using a drill bit the same size as the holler where the dowel goes in drill it through the plate. However there may be two styles of dowelling the box to the engine in each case. ( 6mm solid and a 14mm tubular ?) From memory these both use a side mount or top mount tubular locating dowel. Having bolts passing through the locators simply drill those out by hand very neatly and the bit will follow the hole naturally. Although without the locating device your box will by virtue of six bolts a dust cover additionally the location will be so close nobody would "ever" know. Now, ring an automotive engineering shop and see if they think differently? Surprisingly one of the main purposes is to hold the two parts together while getting bolts started. The next is to prevent torque shift between them. There is a component of accuracy when installing. It's down the list far enough to be negligible. Finally call the adaptor supplier and ask why it has no drilling for the bellhousing locators!.

    Bolt up the hybrid trans, and when it blows, swap the CD in with the fixed issue.

    that fuel pressure regulator is going make cabin noise and rattle that fire wall best bolted to the engine. the stock LAC's lowered changes the the wheelbase measurements front to back. stock nissan ka tranmission shuld hold 500 hp with no worries ... good luck i cant wait to see it running ....

    I for one just wanna see the truck running and driving. I think going with the hybrid trans sending it to the moon is a good idea lol. Then when that trans gives out or you get tired of it swap it with the CD. Either I just wanna see more videos on this truck, I'm currently building a D21 and reference your videos often so thanks for that.

    Call Mazworx. If this is an adapter plate they’ve sold a thousand times, ask them how people have dealt with the lack of dowels.
    While you’re at it, ask them why they didn’t design them into the plate. If this hasn’t been an issue for anyone else, you’re probably overthinking this potential issue.

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад

      This is a Maverick Motorsports adapter plate, and the company is no longer in business to my knowledge.
      This wouldn’t have been an issue with Mazworx. I’ve run so many of their parts over the years and have had them do machine work for me. Never an issue from them.

    My opinion, I think you know what you should do. Might not be what you planned for but like you said, if it’s not installed properly something is gonna give. Slap it together have a blast with the truck and get everything you need in the meantime 🤷🏽‍♂️

    In my opinion it matters how much of an issue this potential misalignment is to you. Will it keep you up at night if don't follow through with your plans to have no doubt of alignment? Seeing your other work and meticulousness I am confident in your abilities to have it right as is but there is an old phrase I've heard before, "You can do it right, or you can do it again." I'd complete the work if it were mine.

    I have the ka\Sr hybrid setup in my truck, gt30, 550cc, Tial spring at about 15psi (you do the math) and I haven’t had any issues. Although I haven’t driven it THAT much yet either.

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад

      Fair enough. I think the hybrid trans will be fine for a while. I still have to shake-down the entire truck once it's running anyways.

    The hybrid transmission should be safe for time being until you can sort out the dowel pins, I’m sitting at 420WHP 345 FT LBS on the KA24DE+T swap. I also have a cd009 I’m going to put in after my trans finally lets go. The pins seem like an import part of the transmission and I’d worry it would break something that could’ve been prevented.

    • @Inner_Sanctum

      Oh for sure, I am definitely swapping in the hybrid trans and fixing the adapter plate.
      420/345 is serious sauce for that little FS5W71 trans. Awesome!

    • @Inner_Sanctum
      @Inner_Sanctum  Год назад

      Probably so, but I can just lower the boost for the time being just to shake down the truck. I still need to make sure the suspension, brakes, and steering are all in order before I send the trans to hell anyway. 😎

    5 things.
    *you are going to have to dowel the plate to the engine, and drill the trans dowel bosses to make them through holes, then
    *You need to follow this how to video with your bell off the trans. ruclips.net/video/fu9bg-fJdnc/видео.html&ab_channel=SilverSportTransmissions
    *You can only be 5 thou out or you will trash the drive line in short order.
    *you can get dowels from mcmaster carr, any kind you can think of.
    *Then drill though a trans flange dowel boss from the outside into the plate, then step up to a ream for the fit.
    This is pretty much how industrial stuff. I can keep a 0.001" runout with a hand drill like this. You are going to spend a lot of time bumping it in alignment. stay patient.

    • @Inner_Sanctum

      Nope. I installed this engine exactly where the KA24E was before. It’s just a little lower down. My new factory length driveshaft plugged in without issue, and the carrier bearing bolted up exactly the same as well.
