    Hats off, I wish more videos were that pro :) I love how you talk only when needed and with the precise words. Lots of silence makes it almost soothing !

    Excellent info, thank you. I have a tiny amount of dust, but don't think it's worth disassembly right now, but good to know this.

    you can recalibrate the front element, when i took mines apart to clean and stuff i decided to play around with the calibration of the front element, WHAT A DIFFERNCE IT MADE AT 2.8, i thought it was just cuz i was using it on the 90d and its high res sensor, but after i calibrated it myself the lense is crystal sharp even at 2.8 where before it was soft as hell and unusable

      Could you show me how to calibrate that front lens? I took apart mine without the marking step 😵

    Thank you so much for this! I ordered my lens pre-owned and it looks like the inside of a vacuum cleaner. Can't wait to get it cleaned out.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  2 года назад +1

      Well, if you would like the clean all the lens elements, you have to, but most of the time the dust is between the first and the second lens element which is easy to clean.

    Thank you for your service! I don't even own that lens because most used lenses come with dust inside.
    Wondering if there may be more dust on the inside than between the first and the second lenses!

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 года назад +1

      The other, inner lens elements have very rarely dust on them.

    Excellent. I have one of these and probably ought to do this as I bought it well, well used.
    If you ever go into the zoom mechanism I would love to see it. Mine doesn't zoom terribly smoothly, which is awkward for video work even with the constant aperture.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +2

      To solve zooming problems I would recommend to check my disassembly video. After the USM motor is removed, there are three wide screws which holds the two parts of the lens together. If those screws are too tight, then zooming might not smooth (but you can get zoom creep). Other solution to make the zooming smoother is to put lens grease on the inner lens tube (which is under the USM motor.)
      Here is the disassembly video after the USM motor has been removed: ruclips.net/video/vPwDYRfSIN8/видео.html

    where can i get a front element for this lens , mine has a big scratch on it and i want to replace it

  • @KaganRustem
    @KaganRustem 4 года назад +2

    Great clear video! Thank you so much for uploading! I am going to do this to my lens right now. I was wondering if you have any advice for "servicing" this lens? My focus ring feels s little rough as though dirt or dust has built up inside. Also, my zoom ring is a little looser towards to the wide and telephoto ends of the zoom range than it is in the middle. It would be awesome if I could "tighten" it up a little to give it a more even feel throughout the zoom range.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +1

      The focus ring can be easily cleaned, maybe you can put some grease on the side to slide better. The zooming can be tightened by tightening the three screws which are connecting the front lens barrel to the rest of the lens.

      @@CamerasLensesEtc thanks for the advice! To access those three screw should I remove the front element from the lens?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +1

      No. Start the disassembly process, and you will have access to those three screws after the USM motor has been removed.

    Thanks for a very useful video. What would the effect be if the lens wasn't put back exactly in line with the mark you make at the beginning? Could it reduce the sharpness of the lens? Or would there be some other effect? I ask because I cleaned my lens and I am not sure if it has all the sharpness it had before, but that could be because it just needs cleaning again.
    Perhaps there is an way to work out what the correct position is if you didn't make a mark or the mark rubbed off? Perhaps you can match some point on the plastic holding the lens with some fixed point on the lens barrel?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад

      You can calibrate the front lens by loosening the screws and twisting it. It can reduce the sharpness of the lens, or the focus is not accurate.
      Usually you see the marks of the screws on the plastic, and also, the screws was covered with that semi-transparent wax or plastic, maybe you can use that as a guide where the screws were originally. If not, then just test the lens with different front lens positions, and choose the sharpest setting.

      @@CamerasLensesEtc Thanks. Luckily enough cleaning the lens externally front and back (and ditching the UV filter) and re-testing showed the images were very sharp across the frame, but your method may prove useful after the next clean if i go wrong.

    Hi thanks for your videos..I have this lens and I noticed that mold has formed inside the rear glass. looking inside the lens with a light it is possible to see a small filament. I tried to ask the assistance in Canon and they replied that in their opinion the lens is to be thrown away and that in these cases they do not do maintenance; however the lens still works fine (I have not noticed any degradation in the quality of the photos). They also told me that the fungus could also spread to the other lenses in the kit. I honestly don't want to throw away a lens that still works ... Do you think something can be done?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 года назад

      Generally, it is (almost) impossible to separate the lens elements in the front lens and put it back together perfectly, so you can't do anything apart from replacing the front lens element.
      The fungus can spread inside the lens. Just keep the lens in a low-moisture place.

      @@CamerasLensesEtc I think the OP was referring to the elements at the back of the lens closest to the mount? This issue I've just found in mine early & want to clean it. Does your other video cover this? Thanks so much for these videos you do a wonderful job! Thanks to Florida damp my 100mm USM macro is needing cleaned much more & your video will help me do what Canon refused to! 🙏

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@katmanluke7187 If that is the case, then the rear lens element can be removed relatively easily. Follow this video until I remove the PCB, then the rear lens element can be removed by removing the three screws. (There are three calibrated screws on the side, don't remove those.)
