Hi Mason! I've Cerebral Palsy, so my situation differs a little bit from yours. I'm lacking control over my movement of my arms, hands and can't speak. I control my powered wheelchair with my right foot. To communicate with others I use a communication device since I was 10 (now I'm 24), so for me it was always very crucial to discover ways to type effectively. At first I typed with an on-screen keyboard, which I controlled with the mouse function of my wheelchair with my foot. It worked, but it was very slow and very exhausting. Quite a few years later I found a software called 'Dasher'. Dasher is a unique way of typing. Essentially you move through letters to form words and sentences. It sounds complicated, and it can seem complicated when someone is watching who doesn't know what's going on. But for me it was very intuitive and, more important, waaaay less exhausting. A couple of years I made the amazing discovery that eye tracking exists. Since then I use my eyes to type, which is much faster and don't exhausting at all. It's definitely the most effective way to type for me... That is until I can hook up my brain into a PC and could type with sheer brain power. :D
I find sticky keys very useful because I like to keep my right hand free to use the trackball. My right arm recovered a lot slower than my left arm so I tend to forget its even there sometimes. I was interested to note that I use my thumbs to type while you use your knuckles. Just shows how we adapt differently. I agree with you entirely that we need to try use "regular" equipment and rely on adaptive aids as little as possible. What might seem impossible today can be second nature tomorrow.
Dude! You are on fire putting out so much content so fast. Great job Mason! 👏 Also, if you have windows and a mic (or a Bluetooth mic) you can use the software baked right into windows to get voice to text input. It's free
Haha Yeah, I can crank out content now that I built a custom computer and have more time with this quarantine. That's a great idea that I didn't even think of! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Mason - I use a pen weaved through my fingers, so that my index finger protrudes on it's own, and the weaved pen gives my finger rigidity that you need when typing. I can type with one finger at about 25-30 words per minute. I'm right-handed, and use my left hand just to control shift, caps lock, tab, esc, ctrl, alt, and Win keys. I also have better view of the keyboard rather than using my knuckles like I use to. I can also use a mouse with two hands, or a touchpad with one hand. I worked in IT for 30 years, so keyboard efficiency got real good, and I like you, prefer not to use adaptive equipment. If you'd like a small video demo, let me know and I can send you one. (C5-6 quad)
That sounds like it would work well! I'm not sure how many words I can type per minute. It sounds like we both use our left hand for the same buttons. Thanks for sharing!
I use a pencil in a cuffed splint. You should try the Ease of access feature in Windows, specifically Sticky keys it lets you press and release Shift for example then press the desired key without having to go back to press caps lock a second time
Quads consider useing a hairtie👍 or rubber band around your wrist . If or when you need to type or write just roll it down over the thumb and stick a pencil or a pen 👍 or a fork etc through the "band" and adjust in any way you want to get the object 👍as sturdy as u need . Not secure as you like use two or more. Hairties are inexpensive and vary in circumference styles colors etc. Careful not leave something too tight on too long. 👍The best are the wrapped hairties. Can be loosley worn 24/7.
I use my left thumb to type but otherwise much the same way you do. My typing speed went from 90+wpm to about 14wpm after my injury (C5 incomplete). However I am especially interested to see how you manipulate the mouse. Could you please make a video about using the mouse? I should add that I've become an expert at knowing keyboard shortcuts I never bothered with before
Welcome to the channel! If I stretch my arms out to the sides and draw a line across right above my ring finger, that is where my feeling stops. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! For the mouse, I use a Logitech M510 wireless mouse. I put my right hand on top of the moue with my index finger to click and I put my left hand on the left side for easier and steady movement. I plan on making a video about this.
Wow, I really appreciate your donation! Your money will be reinvested into my RUclips channel to make more and better content! Thank you for watching and commenting!
hi, I have Progressive MS been diagnosed over 30 years effectively a quadriplegic partial use of one arm. I have an Apple laptop have you ever tried something called sticky keys? It allows you to hold down he's such as command and shift but pushing it once so if I want to do a capital letter I I push the shift key once and then whatever letter I need capitalized and it acts as if I was holding it down.
I honestly forgot about sticky keys until after making this video. I had turned it off for so many years that it didn't even register in my mind to give it a try. Thank you for watching and commenting!
No, just that my fingers are curled up, so I have to use the typing tools a certain way which I believe I explain about in the video. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I am devastated because I lost A LOT of hand function and I played the piano! Do you have any tips on that? I don't believe Dragon is available in all countries anymore.
Unfortunately, I do not have any tips on playing the piano because I’ve never played the piano and you wouldn’t want to hear me play it! Haha I’m sure there are ways to play with poor finger function. You don’t believe Dragon is available in all countries as in other languages?
A bit late but search jabouteur on yt, he's a c5-c6 quad playing piano, I play a little now too. There are ways to play 3, 4 even 5 note chords with no finger function and no splints...
I've never used sticky keys and can use the keyboard just find without that feature. However, I would try using sticky keys if I found something that I couldn't do as easily without it.
How do you type?

Hi Mason. Very nice. We need a place where everyone can add some short videos or pictures of how they type. Maybe you have some idea.
Yeah, I wish RUclips let viewers attach videos with their comments if the channel of the video approves. Thank you for watching and commenting!

@cyber-quad. Do you perhaps have a picture of your "setup"?
Awesome. I am a recent amputee and the functioning hand now has severe carpal tunnel. Do you have anymore tips? Please and thank you.
