  • Welcome back to Talking Dragon Age, the show where I talk about Dragon Age. Today, we discuss Elgar'nan; the cheif deity of the elven pantheon. Althuogh, we actually talk more about elven creation and life in Elvhenan than about Elgar'nan specifically. Essentially, he is often depicted as being a very powerful deity, defined by his wrath, pride, and vengeance.
About him being born of the sun and the earth... I didn't think of this at the time, but it may be that elves as a whole are some kind of mixture between organic beings from the earth (Titans) and the Fade (the sun, or "sky"). That is just another theory. Everything about the ancient elves is weird and difficult to make sense of.
If you have any ideas on how to improve the show or theories you'd like to see covered, please let me know in a comment or by messaging me directly.

I have a theory that the “sun” in elven lore is the maker... or whatever is akin to the maker. That would explain the sun symbolism of the chantry, the constellation solarium (spelling?) and why Elgar'nan is mad at the sun... because it made humans and favored them.

They're mostly made of rock and Lyrium...So it would just look like a sculpted statue with blue glowing bits.

Elgarnan is the kind of Asshole you can't help but admire and appreciate in a very wrathful sort of way.
Even if you hate him, you have to admit he is a badass

About the origin of the Elves. There is a theory that the Elves were maybe some kinda demi-god like beings. A mix of Spirit and Mortal, and maybe they started aging cuz they lost their spirit-selves after Solas divided the Fade from the Waking world.

"For abandoning the People in their time of greatest need, for casting aside form to flee to where the Earth could not reach, we declare Xebenkeck and others of her ilk exiled from the lands of the Evanuris. Beware! Their familiarity with shape allows them to travel paths unaided. They may be bound, but only the protection of your gods will fully shield you from their malice. They are Forbidden from the Earth that is our right."
This piece kind of strengthens that notion. Perhaps the veil tore the elves apart with some becoming what we now know as spirits and demons and others became the physical elves. And these "evil" beings (aka the Forbidden Ones) were the first to cast aside their physical forms and became demons.

Its more likely the Old Gods were spirits. The Evanuris are almost assuredly Elves who grew so powerful that they were revered as gods.
Either way both are and were immortal beings
That or ALL beings originated from the fade BEFORE it was seperate from the world. I mean naturally speaking, the fade is just a form of nature like the wind or water, its just in an abstract form that is connected with magic. Remember what solas did with the veil is just basically a magical wall or Dam like with what we do with water to restrict its flow.

@@SmartAss4123 'who grew so powerful' Always wonder how one becomes powerful enough to actually become a virtual god. Spell books? nah .. soo... where exactly does the power come from?

    • @SmartAss4123

      Matthew075
The fade itself. Most magic is derived from the Fade.
Accessing larger parts of it, and interesting areas that contain secrets of how to mold, shape, and utilize it all derive from your knowledge and self power.
The greater the knowledge and depth of the fade, the greater the power.
Thats essentially what Solas says. But since its magic and a video game, its not an exact science

@@SmartAss4123 Yeah I get the open ended questions because it's a game. Just wish there was a detailed history that explained things a bit better. So far we have.. perhaps the maker is real or not... and the Ancient elves turned into god like beings because.. stuff happened... and the old gods are dragons because.. reasons.. and darkspawn came from tevinter mages. It's never explained how they even reached the golden city. We have been in the fade several times and never once were able to leave the area we were in... so HOW did they get that ability? Just a lot of unanswered questions I guess.

I thought about what Kieran said about the elves want to look like that. Perhaps he means about vallaslin? Dalish don’t know that these are slave marks and continue to put them, and maybe that’s what curious him?

You touched on something i have always wondered about, is the fade physically connected to thedas? We know there are people who live on other continents so do they have mages who connect with the fade? And if so, did Solas bringing up the veil cause chaos across all of the planet as well? And on the flip side could tearing down the veil destroy a civilization on the other side of the planet. On the same topic of other continents, we know the deep roads connected the Dwarven empire and that it was vast. If the deep roads are deep enough under the surface then they could theoretically cross oceans. And that creates so many more questions if its true

Or maybe the rest of the world is covered by a "Primal Veil" that the early elves tore down in Thedas, making Solas's creation of the Veil a "return to normalcy."

gutza1, I seem to recall a story about Antivan explorers who went insane on an island way out off of the coast or maybe they made landfall on another continent. Point is, what if this was caused by an imperfect seam between that “primal veil” and the one Solas constructed?

Well, the Codex credits it as from the keeper of a clan that shared Dalish legend with humans. So he's presenting it as a legend of creation, like the Chant of Light. So, the Dalish pieced that tale together, but it's more than a bedtime story

I thought what Kieran was saying is he knew about the truth of Vallaslin being slave markings...Remember we're a DALISH Elf if an Elven Inquisitor. Kieran makes comments about the races in his remarks to you. Think about it he's wondering why people with such a strength of will and powerful magics would willingly be proud to brand themselves as slaves to false gods.
Honestly though given Old God Baby Kieran obviously has a connection to sense things as they really are or were...It wouldn't surprise me that his question could be interpreted in multiple ways to allow us to decide what we could be or are. I see Kieran as a person with the wisdom of Morrigan and Flemeth and Mythal combined but with a more human outlook on life. What I'm saying is he's philosophical.
