Ok...now that you've sampled this group it's time to hit their catalog. "One" and "Old Fashioned Love Song" to name a few please. You won't be disappointed in the least! ❤
Three Dog Night were huge in the 70's! Lots of big radio hits; One, Just An Old Fashioned Love Song, Easy to be Hard, Mamma Told Me Not To Come, Liar, Joy to the World, Black and White, and more. All of them bangers.
This is the studio recording dubbed over the video. This is more typical of their sound than Never Been to Spain. Other songs, One, Liar, Mamma Told Me Not To Come, Shambala, Easy To Be Hard.
Most of us who grew up with this music can tell if it's the studio version or live. But the younger generation don't know that! But that's ok with me !
A Randy Newman song! The things ya write before the Mouse hires you. ;-) "Never Been to Spain" and "Joy to the World" (Jeremiah Was A Bull Frog) were by Hoyt Axton, an under-acknowledged songwriter IMHO.
Being a teenager in the 70's this was the norm. SOOO much good music, such a variety, I don't think we realized at the time how special alll the music we had to choose from was.
That's why I can't believe these and 2 other podcasters, independent of each other, had never heard this. I thought everybody had. But then, none had even been born yet while I was cranking up the volume on the radio during my high school and college years.
Yes, you need to take a deep dive into Three Dog Night. I believe this was not a "live" performance as the music sounded just like the studio version. TDN were very versatile with Up-tempo songs like "Joy To The World", "Mama Told Me Not To Come" & "Liar' along with ballads "Easy To Be Hard" & "Pieces Of April". Great reaction guys.
You'd enjoy the longer live version of this song as well! It's from the show Soundstage in 1975. The opening by Corey Wells alone will knock your socks off. I was a big fan, and In 1970, my younger sister and I "choreographed" a dance routine to their hit song Joy to the World. My sis was 11 and I was 14. Our parents had been out to dinner with friends and when they all returned to our home we performed our dance masterpiece. We squatted into Jeremiah the bullfrog position and wiggled our fingers to represent the fishes in the deep blue sea. 😊 Lots of great songs to enjoy are already listed in the comments. Thanks for sharing your reactions and love of music! ❤
From 1969-1974 nobody sold more records or concert tickets than 3DN. You need to check out their 1975 concert video of Try A Little Tenderness. Cory Wells, the lead on Eli, gives Otis Reading a run for his money on that performance
@@dancole1172 I got to see it live in early 1983 in El Paso, the venue was the back room of a bar, rated to 750, it was announce that it was SRO at 1500. great show.
It's Redding-I had tickets to see him in Madison when his plane crashed in Lake Monona and he was killed at age 26-and there is no way he comes close to Otis's version in May in Paris on the Stax tour
You really need to see the live version of this! This was the studio version. The live will really blow you away!!! Live “Try a little tenderness” also will amaze you! I’ve seen them live several times. Incredible performance… their voices are beautiful & powerful!
This is a cover of a Laura Nyro song. Laura Nyro was amazing. She wrote many songs that were hits for other artists. She got very rich with David Geffen when they sold off their songwriting company in the late sixties and she kind of slowed her career down. Her songwriting was otherworldly and she has a huge fan base of other artists like Elton John, Todd Rundgren, Joni Mitchell, Paul Stanley (Kiss) and Alice Cooper. Her album “Eli and the thirteenth confession,” which has her version of Eli’s Coming on it, just blew everyone’s mind.
The genius of this group was that they took pretty good songs and made them incredibly good by changing the tempo and adding soaring vocal harmonies and lots of Soul and some great beats.
Nice stuff but not the usual start! OLD FASHIONED LOVE SONG (my favorite) ONE (I'm betting you heard) JOY TO THE WORLD SHAMBALA BLACK AND WHITE LIAR and THE SHOW MUST GO ON (a Leo Sayer cover) There, that's a good start !! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I'm so proud to be part of "Generation" of this music. Despite not listening to them as much but now that I know what they can do - I am blown away by their professionalism of strong voices and great band sound!
I play this a lot when I DJ, I'd love to see what this Eli looks like lol. There's a longer version of this out there you might be interested in seeing. Any one of these guys could have been a lead singer for sure. Have a good day!
Exactly! Go through their entire song list and pick one, any one, and your gonna love it. Speaking of One, how about that song next up. ONE. will not regret that ONE.
The Soundstage live performance in 1975 is more widely known, and is actually live. Some TV shows only let musical acts perform lipsync to the recording, so this is the studio version, 😊
Three Dog Night is underrated. 3 lead vocalists.such depth. Loved their music during the 60s 70s growing up then. 60s 70s was the best music ever!!! Their music was not the same boiler plate song over and over. This is my favorite of their songs . Shows their amazing vocals
So many great songs. The 2 you guys have done are not my favorites by them but still great songs. Black and White. Mama Told Me, Shambala are all great. I bet at least 1 of you have heard Joy To The World . Such an amazing, often overlooked band.
I loved 3 Dog Night as young teenager. They have so many great songs. I had a crush on Chuck Negron, the one with the mustache. A deep rabbit hole to check out.
My favorite group back in the 60's and 70's. The 3 lead singers had great harmonies. My favorite songs, Easy to be hard, Mama told me not to come, Try a little tenderness and Liar. RIP Cory.👀👀
This is what you get when a group has three separate lead singers. Next, please, Momma Told Me Not To Come and another great one, Jeremiah Was Bullfrog.
Ahhh, my first concert in my early teens! This group started with only the 3 lead singers. They went in search for the musicians then. They did mostly covers of songs that failed to chart and made them hits, or songs from unknown writers and made them famous! Chuck Negron, singer with mustache, Cory Wells, the middle one, smiling, RIP and Danny Hutton. I did get all their autographs. I would check out "Try A Little Tenderness" as Cory does the lead vocals on the very soulful songs and that's a soulful one, originally done by Otis Redding. Joy To The World is another must do, along with Mama Told Me Not To Come. The last 2 songs are high energy too.
Much later Chuck Negron was kicked out of the band due to his addictions. He got involved with some very shady people and a huge Hollywood quadruple murder but he's still performing and has a FB page. Cory passed away and Danny Hutton is still active. 3DN actually had very little turnover in their band. 3 Dog Night also has a FB page if you want to see current news. The murders occurred at a drug house Chuck frequented. One report said Chuck's wife found the bodies while looking for him. Here's that story. The Wonderland Murders. ruclips.net/video/lXkFEgqpGPM/видео.html
As mentioned, this song was written by the incomparable Laura Nyro, she wrote many hits made famous by others, this song, Stone Soul Picnic, And When I Die, and Wedding Bell Blues among others
Yes!! Laura Nyro - Rock n Roll and Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Wrote hits "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues" for The 5th Dimension, "And When I Die" for Blood Sweat & Tears, and "Stoney End" for Barbra Streisand.
This song was written by the extremely underappreciated Laura Nyro. She wrote many pop hits that other artists made into hits. But her own spin on her tunes is so funky and soulful. She was never as widely known as the artists she fed, but she was beloved by her peers- they were her biggest fans. Worth a peek. This song or maybe Stone Soup Picnic, Stoney End or Wedding Bell Blues. She was amazing!
Thankyou Robert, I will also have to make a separate comment about her own original version of this song, which is phenomenal. Almost noone seems to know that one, so sad.
This is one of singer/songwriter Laura Nyro's many hits and she was very hot at the time. Three Dog Night had one big hit after another from 1969 to '74 and were ALWAYS on our radios throughout those years.
Thank you guys for sharing. TDN was one of my mosstest favorite groups back in that time. The harmony between the three of them was absolutely amazing. They were the very first concerts that I went to. (I believe that I had good taste.) If you would like to get into another fun song I recommend "Momma Told Me Not to Come." I still can't get enough of these guys today.
One is the Loneliest Number. You have got to check this tour de force out. On The Road to Shambala is another one that just really showcases how well multiple singers in that band can sing, and I know I've seen a live version or a studio version of it which is pretty interesting. Either way, you definitely want to hear it. What they do especially near the end when they're just going off is so fun and impressive.
Three Dog Night had to be my first love, heard them for the first time in grade school. They were very popular in the late 60's and 70's. They all can sing magnificiently, check out "Black and White", it's one of my favorites.
Three Dog Night was my first concert. When the spotlight came on these 3 stood there and harmonized for a full 3 minutes with no instruments. So powerful. I was blown away. Huge fan ever since.
Yeah, these guys could really sing. They have a lot of different sounds, different paths, but always with great vocals. You might enjoy their cover of Randy Newman's song Mama Told Me Not To Come. Lots of personality in that one. Thanks for sharing more of their music.
Chuck Negron -‘stached singer far left, Bronx Puerto Rican guy sang doo wop. Left the Bronx on a basketball scholarship to Cal State in the early 60’s. His story of drug addiction and redemption is one of the most poignant and redemptive rock and roll stories ever! Still touring with nostalgia shows. Wiki him! Thank you Chuck!
I love Three Dog Night. They put out the best music. I had every album they made and saw them in concert several tims times. School girl crush for Chuck Negron. Please do more.
Joy To The World. Billboard magazine as the #1 pop single of 1971. The song was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo Or Group during the 14th Grammy Awards.
Your next one should be "Mama Told Me Not To Come". It's a whole different vibe! It was one of their biggest hits during the 70s, and also my favorite by them! All their songs are great, though! Thanks for another great reaction! ✌💙✌
They toured in the summer of 1969 to support the release of this album. It was the summer before I started high school. My first rock concert and my first boy/girl kiss in the bleachers of Arizona State University football stadium. Her name was 'Jimmer Daniels' and I thought I was in love! What a night it was for me. My dream girl was making out with me while we listened to this amazing band. A year later her father got a job out of state and they moved away. I was crushed. I'd put that album on and the tears just flowed, I was heartbroken. Like lots of young romances it slowly faded away and I never saw her again. I'm in my 60's now but I can still picture her face as the band played the song "Eli's Coming". We walked out of that stadium together and I walked her to her dad's car. I felt like I was nine feet tall and bulletproof. Her dad gave me the evil eye. It makes me smile to see young people finding this old music. It's just as good now as it was back then. Thanks for reviewing this band!
Three Dog Night was not a cover band, in the 70s. A cover band is what you find at the local bar on a Saturday night, singing popular hits from many different artist, just like you heard them on the radio. They get paid by the bar, for the night's work. Three Dog Night had their music produced, recorded and sold to the public. Whether they wrote the lyrics or not, they created the musical arrangements themselves. They were legit recording artists. One of the biggest acts of the 70s.
I feel blessed to have seen Three Dog Night in concert twice, around 1970 and '71. Songs were quick back then, so when you went to their shows, you heard a LOT of songs in 90 minutes' time. Most of their hits were covers of songs that had lesser successes, and I think all were written by someone else. They were great live performers!
I got my hands on two open-seating tickets to see them live in 1972. The girl I asked to go with me turn me down at the last minute and I ended up going with my brother-in-law (who was a huge fan). We arrived at the local high school auditorium soon after they started their first of two shows. The ticket keeper at the door let us in anyway (and neglected to take our tickets). We sat right off the left side of the stage, front row, also in front of the large stack of speakers. We couldn't see the band on stage well, but the sound was amazing. That show ended and we slowly walked over the two center, front row seats and just sat there. A few minutes later a guard came over and told us the show was over and we had to leave. We promptly showed him our tickets and he let us stay. We both had the time of our lives - the best concert experience ever! Three Dog Night was legendary, with three extremely talented lead singers and a band to match. Memories...
Ever seen a band with three lead singers? These guys are the real deal. Not slaves to fashion but they can sing. Iconic hits from these guys. Black and White, my favorite.
Saw the original group several times back in the late 60's and early 70's. Chucks voice was spectacular. Some of the best harmonies of all time. Their live performance in concert is really the one to watch.
This is my favorite Three Dog Night song. Thanks for reacting to it! If you want to check out more, Mamma Told Me Not to Come and Shambala. Two of my other favs. They have a lot of great songs to check out.
You can see why they are in the Vocal Hall of Fame!1975 Soundstage concert was amazing! 3 lead singers with great harmony. So much personality! Cory in the center with his sexy, sultry voice. Chuck to the left, the falsetto. Danny to the right with his richness! 21 top 40s and 3 #1s from 1969 to 1975. Mostly known for, JOY TO THE WORLD and ONE. Go down the rabbit hole, you will not be disappointed!❤
Easy to be Hard, Joy to the World, Celebrate, One, Mama Tolod Me Not to Come, Try a Little Tenderness...Nearly 50 milion in record sales.
and.... "ONE"

I think you will get a kick out of "Mamma Told Me Not To Come".

They also recorded three,of the great Paul Williams songs; “Family of Man, Out in the Country and Old Fashioned Love Song”.
Please listen to anything from the writer of this song, Laura Nyro (pronounced like the Roman emperor), she was amazing.
I cringe when someone says this. There are many great bands that did not write their own songs.
I saw them in concert in about 1974, and they put on a SHOW!
Three Dog Night wasn't lesser known, or not to most of us that grew up back then. They are a super group, though! You got that part right!
Yeah, we girls in high school were looking high and low for Eli back then:)
A fun song that they did in the mid 70s, and my favorite TDN song, is The Show Must Go On.
They're coming to Cedar Rapids Iowa on the 24th of this month, October, a week after my birthday, wish I could go.
Oh so magnificent ❤ Their vocals, I saw them in 1973. 😊
Memories...
Listen to the live version. 1975, and as they said in the 60s, it will blow your mind!!!
I did lights for a band and they killed this song ,so much fun to do lights too that up tempo is faster than you think great choice
As you can tell, they were amazing live. One of my favorite concerts back in the day.
The 1975 concert broadcast on Soundstage is just brilliant. The version of Eli is great
One!!! The best song.
Ever seen a band with three lead singers? These guys are the real deal. Not slaves to fashion but they can sing. Iconic hits from these guys. Black and White, my favorite.
It's so cool to see these guys having fun performing this.
Saw them back in 1971, in Jacksonville, Florida. great concert.
I saw them in 1972 and they were great. So many hits in a two plus hour show.
Growing up with classic rock, Three Dog Night was one of those bands whose vocals stood out. Their music is great, but the highlight is their voices
Saw the original group several times back in the late 60's and early 70's. Chucks voice was spectacular. Some of the best harmonies of all time. Their live performance in concert is really the one to watch.
Good reactions as always! 3 Dog was THE band of the late 60s- early 70s
My grandson's name is Eli and I've sing or played this for him since he was a baby... he's going on 16 now and quite the musician himself
Read Chuck Negron's (on the left in the video) book. Its called Three Dog Nightmare. My favorite R&R book. This band had hit after hit! Great band!
Try Joy to the World by three dog night
This is my favorite Three Dog Night song. Thanks for reacting to it! If you want to check out more, Mamma Told Me Not to Come and Shambala. Two of my other favs. They have a lot of great songs to check out.
I saw them 3-4x in concert in 60s. Great concerts
