To hear him speak of the importance of human support is heartbreaking since the death of his wife seems to have been shattering. A remarkable musician and teacher, Aliza Kezeradze had worked with Pogorelich through his early maturity and, by his account, was his great sounding board, critic and love. Read Elyse Mach’s book of interviews with pianists for more on this. Their story is so moving that I included a version of it in a novel I wrote. Thanks for sharing this, David.
Pogorelich is a classic personally and as a musician. Get it, he's the real thing.
17:33 this is so applicable today, music is so intertwined with the recording industry and profit-driven companies, that the music itself is often left forgotten. Think of the more recent, popular releases, for example Lang Lang's recordings. There are artists out there who cannot get their interpretations on record as it may not fit the certain industry standard, or the goal of producing and selling the record
How interesting it would've been to hear Pogorelich play Bartok's Sonata for two pianos and percussion. To this day he hasn't yet recorded any chamber music.
I attended one of his recitals decades ago: he appeared somewhat haughty. Yet here, he seems very reticent. I am reminded of Horowitz, who said that his personality when not on stage was completely different - he said "when I am on stage, I am the king!". I have a vivid memory of his performance of the Chopin B minor sonata: I was astonished at how slowly he took the largo, which is incredibly difficult at a true largo tempo. I have never heard anyone play it at such a tempo; it was admirable, but by half way through it became hard to take.

Innerestin' question... Wikipedia tells me Bartok lived from 1881-1945, Prokofiev from 1891-1953....
@@noochinator2 I don't think he refers to numbers of years lived, but refers to the time a composer needs to complete his creational course.
