This video is legitimately the reason I am still playing music. When I first saw it six years ago, I was a 20-year-old who missed marching band. this inspired me to Keep pursuing music in nontraditional ways. Now I'm in a weird hippie marching band doing paid gigs all over Chicago. Thanks, Nat. And thanks, Adam for sharing this.
Or maybe those who do have a musical ear and prefer the original? This one is surely played well, but it lacks the edge - and most importantly the groove: Big orchestras can't swing - and I am talking physics here. And these guys are out of sync despite their conductor.
that happens with a heavy instrumnet like that. wait till you wake up the next morning sonetimes your bac k would hurt from all that weight, an especially your shoulder if you dont have the proper padding for it.
I just want to say thank you God for my ears to hear such wonderful sounds. And thank you to the RUclips algorithm for showing me this amazing clip. Until yesterday, I had never heard this before or knew anything about the Youngblood Brass band. I have replayed from about 05:13 onward over 50 times since just last night. Everything about this is perfect; the way he dances with the tuba, the way he is sweating, the conducter, the other horns in the back. This right here took me back to my preteen years when I first fell in love with the sound of the tubas and the marching band in general. Oh my lord is all I can say. I am blown away and this man and his sound has made me decide right here and now that I am purchasing a tuba within the next week to pursue my true passion...being in a band and blasting my little heart out on this big horn. I haven't played since college in 20 years so I am excited to see how much I remember and how far I can go with it. Wish me luck guys!
I have watched this video at least 20 times now. You are right, everything about this performance is perfect. 7 minutes of the most intense brass playing I have ever seen. He channels every bit of his soul through that horn. I've played trumpet for 35 years and this was the inspiration I didn't know I needed.
Actually that is a King 2350 sousaphone. It doesn't have short action valves like the 20k does and doesn't have the loop on the valve section like the 20k. Great performance. I wish I was that good.
Listening to this piece for like last 5 years or so. I am not into big band music at all, but i love music overall. And i totally love Nat's playing style, using his voice, hence wide spreading tube's natural tone range and overall tone color. AWESOME!
keep in mind the micing technique. He places the mic pretty deep in the bell, which makes it incredibly clear than a centered or side mic'd sousa. It is definitely a Bb, you can tell by the tubing. The cat has mad chops and can play clean, dont try to put that credit on the horn.
Came back to this video after hearing Brooklyn played during the Kansas St. Montana St. NCAA basketball game. Took me a second to remember where I knew the tune from
I got to :^) I'm one of the trumpet players. When he annouced he was playing with us, all the youngblood fans in the band were hella pumped. About 15 of us didn't even need the music...
Youngblood is from Wisconsin, so a lot of the local people had seen them play before. Nat went to UW, and one of their trumpet players was in the UW band (I think). So that's how we knew them...
I never watched the concert put on by the University. But I did once,on PBS. And it was this show. My jaw was on the floor. That’s the baddest ass bitchin tones ever produced by way of brass. You literally have to crawl into that instrument and put in on! Wraps around you like an anaconda. It would never dare to tame a beast like that. What a cool instrument. I’d love to hear this guy play a tune with the Barry Sax player from Tower of Power. Not a battle. Just play. Imagine the portal that would open!
Sometimes it’s like a purring dinosaur. I bet if you put this guy in a fighter jet the pilot would be unable to knock him out with g force. This is Olympic shit!
Initialdluvr, I'm taking a shot at this. Nat's flexiblity on the horn is very good, so a lot of "breaks" he does in between the drum stops are a combination of these: half valving, stacatto notes with/ voice (Multiphonics), voice with a flutter tongue without playing the instrument, and voice alone during the scratches and yell.
Not sure how is it called but is is simple use of own voice together with instrument's sound. It works on any wind instrument you can find around the world, be it sax, tuba or didgeridoo, but not so much conventional players are aware of that :).
@tubasister20k - It might sound like he's singing that part, but I can assure you he's not. He only sings the multiphonic stuff. I know cause I played with him in Dallas Brass for 3 years and heard him do this stuff every night... it's legit.
wow, that many of you know about him? i didn't even learn about this song until my friend who is tuba nerd showed me it, but i'm really glad he did, cuz this song's awesome.
Nate McIntosh. Best. Sousaphonist. Ever. Playing a trombone part while relaxing... and awesome solos... Even if I prefer Original Youngblood Brass Band version, this one is incredible.
yeah, my tuba friend is actually getting the sheet music for this as a late christmas present, and we have hopes of somehow practicing this to where we can play this at our talent show.
The band may have bought it is distributed through a sheet music company. Then again, Nat may have arranged a special version for this band since it was his college.
I live in Russia in the city of Barnaul and I play in the best orchestra in Russia in RHYTHM BAND we also play Brooklyn and I play this solo on I play it without multiphonics but from now on I will teach like this
@TheJudge442 Tubas/Sousaphones actually have the largest range of all the brass instruments (excluding French Horn). It is rare for them to play that high, but they were actually made to be able to play such a wide range of notes.
It's an entire football marching band (actually bigger than the band on the field because not everyone marches every shot) on a stage. So, yeah, it's huge.
its definitely in Bb. He uses this exact sousaphone on numerous occasions, where all parts he plays are written for Bb, and he plays on Bb. he just has a way of "faking" high notes above a certain point. You have to admit he does some stuff 99% of us can't, so assume that these high notes are a part of that.
This bloke is some kind of wild, mad other-worldly genius... I only play harmonica.. don't know what brass is like but can someone please tell me how he gets those 2-tone sounds? Is he playing one note and humming the harmony at the same time?!!!!!???!!
This video is legitimately the reason I am still playing music. If u don’t play sousaphone u can’t imagine how bloody hard it is to do what he does
@@lethargicstove2024 yeah i coulda guessed you were a freshman
As a former sousaphone player, it’s really hard to have those chops and air and embouchure control. Dude’s in a class of his own.
I actually learned on how to somewhat do this! I still have a long way to go but I can do the multiphonics pretty well now
Or maybe those who do have a musical ear and prefer the original? This one is surely played well, but it lacks the edge - and most importantly the groove: Big orchestras can't swing - and I am talking physics here. And these guys are out of sync despite their conductor.
I know what you mean. I keep forgetting that sousaphones can beatbox.
As a tuba player myself, I've gotta say this is fucking incredible! I love to hear Nat rip into it at 2:11!
HOLY CRAP THAT GUY IS SWEATING LIKE NO TOMARROW!
HOLY CRAP THAT GUY CAN REALLY HIGH ON A LOW BRASS!
Chris Marcoones Saw Youngblood live last year. He sweats like that every performance. Wears a sweatband on stage, haha.
It takes a lot to huff and puff a sousaphone as loud as he does. And playing it as high off the scale as he does takes a genuine effort.
that happens with a heavy instrumnet like that. wait till you wake up the next morning sonetimes your bac k would hurt from all that weight, an especially your shoulder if you dont have the proper padding for it.
That blasting at 5:23 is the most epic thing ever.
u should for sure listen to the game of thrones big low brass stuff, if u look up low brass game of thrones it should be the first three videos
Got to do a clinic w/ Youngblood Brass Band once, and heard this sound from 3ft to my left. Incredible experience.
Uhh... no as a tuba player he splattered that note with no control, I played in hbcu bands that overblow with control
5:23
@@michealcastillo3455 the whole point is it's supposed to sound like that and he definitely had control
Back to the practice room I go
Garrett Sutherland on gawwd
Those dislikes are definitely flute and piccolo players.... THEY'RE MAD THE TUBAS TAKING THEIR ROLE!!!!
Yup.
Even though it's a trombone part with the melody and he's often playing a modified tuba part anyway
Yup I'm a tuba player haha😂😂
@@tokinisbaebuchanan9235 we'll might be able to play that high one day brother
I'm a piccolo player... How could I dislike this? :)

That is not a long it’s a Martin
I got to see this concert... SO AMAZING in person! he's so great :)
Sweet sound!!! At 4:40 he's playing double sound!!! Fantastic!!! Soprano 4th octave? hahahaha
Multiphonics
what a strange comment
Multiphonics for sure. Playing the bass note while humming the chord or singing the high met note
cant stop hear this right now... man... sounds awesome, the solist and the whole band
Listening to this piece for like last 5 years or so. I am not into big band music at all, but i love music overall. And i totally love Nat's playing style, using his voice, hence wide spreading tube's natural tone range and overall tone color. AWESOME!
I died when he screamed into the sousaphone XD
Will never forget this night ever.
Nothing beats this version for me. Love overall track mood and Nat's use of voice is awesome and gives another nice layer to already awesome sound.

5:23 Loudest horn ever played :D:D
Bernd Theißing thass loud for only one person to be playing
have you heard tubas of banda sinaloense?
have you heard bcu da rock?
This guy is a legend! :D
omg! my brown sweatshirt was signed by him here! i love this guy:) he's so nice!
This may very well be the most awesome thing I've seen this year. . .
never don't stop play!!! You are amazing !!!
That conductor is my idol
Came back to this video after hearing Brooklyn played during the Kansas St. Montana St. NCAA basketball game. Took me a second to remember where I knew the tune from
Dude... I've been looking for this video for almost two years. ARG!!
Super killer solo!! Also, is it just me or does an Nat look like Dwight Schrute?
I think he looks like Hank Hill
i was here for this!! he played warrior comes out to play.
this dude is beast i've met him once and he's possibly on of the coolest people i've ever met
My seven-year-old son is convinced he wants to play the tuba. I've alternately been showing him clips of Nat and Daellenbach.
My God it is amazing
We need make Nat and Øystein Baadsvic battle on tuba
Two of the most creative players of all time.
Yes
I got to :^) I'm one of the trumpet players.
When he annouced he was playing with us, all the youngblood fans in the band were hella pumped. About 15 of us didn't even need the music...
I hope some day ill be able to be apart of the badger band!!! Honestly the hardest working college band and respected so much.
Youngblood is from Wisconsin, so a lot of the local people had seen them play before. Nat went to UW, and one of their trumpet players was in the UW band (I think). So that's how we knew them...
I wish our jazz band was this big. Now thats a real big band
Good morning, I am french.
I can say to you that you have many fans frenchs.
Really very good!!
Really awsome... really, really really...
I would like to play like this guy...
You're spot on that this is jazz being playing in a concert setting - or rather, being tried to.
I have listened to this many a time and love it but I still have no idea what the conductor says in the beginning it haunts me to this day
You are the best ! It's great !! :-)

There is no "correct" way to hold a trumpet.
No, but there is a wrong way!
thanks someone who understands me

I tried to play sousaphone once in high school. Hard as fuck. What this guy is able to do is amazing.

Hey man, did it work?
O som da Tuba simplesmente Apaixonante !
FANTASTIC!!!
Chills - man. Just chills. Find some Rich Matteson from the 70's - doing all kinds of singing through the tuba. FANTASTIC.
Damn. They have such a good and controlled sound for being a brass band that large. Not to mention how amazing of a sousaphone solo that is.
@ShaggyOtis This is our MARCHING band. We are not serious about our music quality as much as our show and big-ten feel.
Dude looks like the 3rd chair tuba in every marching band
You have to see and hear this !!
