It’s interesting how much theme is so important. Otherwise it’s just a value system. I definitely pick games that appeal to art and thematic interest over game play when I first go looking for a new game. 😅

Evacuation comes to mind as a thematic space euro game because you have to physically move your people from the old planet up to spaceships and then move the spaceships to the new planet and then move the people from the spaceship down to the new planet. Leaving people behind is always a bummer. Although, you can clone new copies of them on the new planet, ha. Also, adding to the theme is that resources from the old planet can only be used on the old planet, and resources from the new planet can only be used on the new planet, so even if you have potential access to lot of resources, it's important to think about where to produce them, and you can load resources onto the spaceships to move them around too.
On the flip side, there are some mechanics and modules that feel very abstract and not thematic. Or at least it takes extra effort to link them to the theme. Such as the infrastructure cards (which come out in a random order each game) that provide increase resource production by placing certain pieces in specific terrains. Or the line majority module that provides extra points for placing any pieces in specific rows of columns of the grid (planet).
But overall, I do feel and enjoy the theme.

That's really neat! I love the look of the board in Evacuation.

Hi Jamey, Happy Wednesday! Sorry I couldn't find a more appropriate video to post this question on- also I may have asked it in a live stream before. Sorry if that is the case. Anyway, do you have a video on player mat or board design? Specifically the elements that help make them cohesive and intuitive. A list of games with great player mats/boards would also be a huge help. I spend a lot of time on BBG clicking through the images but it is hard to find a really clear good image of a lot of the boards. I also have noticed that there are not a ton of reddit threads or videos on this subject but it seems like something that should be covered a lot in the tabletop design realm. Maybe because it's more graphic designer focused information? Any video or blog suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Or any thoughts you have yourself. We have spent the past month trying to get our mats and boards up to snuff; to that level where it looks as good as it feels playing it.

@jameystegmaier Great video. It actually was one of the first I watched when delving into the subject.
I think this subject is a tricky one for someone to make a video on. You kind of need experience in both graphic and board game design to properly broach the subject. UX is really about making something intuitive, and that becomes very subjective very quickly (I believe).
