  • BEHOLD! The Finals of the 2018 GenCon Twilight Imperium Tournament. 36 combatants competed over 3 days to crown themselves the supreme leader of Mecatol Rex. In this game, you will find the Federation of Sol, the Emirates of Hacan, the Barony of Letnev, the Clan of Saar, the Naalu Collective, and the L1z1x Mindnet.
    This game is an edited down version of the final game, which took roughly 4 hours. It is primarily commentary, since the ability to capture quality audio in a large event space is limited. Enjoy!

    Once you learn all of the complicated rules of this game it's actually one of the most fun board games you'll ever play.

    • @artstsym
      @artstsym 3 года назад +35

      I don’t even know if I agree with “complicated,” per se. There are a lot of rules, and the ways they fit together might not be immediately obvious, but I never found any of them particularly difficult (the implications of activating a system are probably the least intuitive, but since it’s the single most common action in the game, you get over it fast). You might have to watch and read for an hour, but you will get to basic competency if you put in the time.

      @@artstsym Agreed. I have played TI 4 several times with veteran and new players and there never seemed to be an issue with people understanding the rules. In my opinion, there are many Euro style board games that are much more complex than TI 4. I think the sheer table presence is what some people find to be the most intimidating thing. Once you explain how things work, people tend to pick it up fast (at least people that are accustomed to playing board games that is).

    • @mbrochh82
      @mbrochh82 2 года назад +6

      the rules are actually super simple. it's the vast decision space that makes it difficult to decide what best to do, but the rules of WHAT you CAN do are easy.

    The commentators really tried to drum up sympathy for Saar, but they brought this on themselves. Saar effectively killed L1 in the beginning, encroached on everyone’s territory, took Mecatol. Saar got too greedy and aggressive, even for a Saar player, and faced the wrath of the table because of it.

      I was angry too for such a letdown final turn. But now I think Hacan's player did his math, but not accounted for the 2 trade goods Naalu received from Letnev for selling the promissory in the end of the Agenda phase. It's hard to keep track of these last minute trades, before the next round begins
      edit: nah, I take it back now. I watched again and the moment Letnev and Naalu made the promissory deal the Hacan player was fully aware, and even talked to the players. Even if he did trust his math, he was dragging at last place, so the minimum he could do to maybe get one more round was going full on on the leader, which happened to be totally at his grasp. They both probably had killer hands of action cards, it would have been a great battle to watch

    ~ 11min mark the purple player plays politics and takes the speaker token. ~11:48 red and purple enact a transaction and part of that was handing the speaker token over. in the living rules under 83.3 it states
    83.3 Players can exchange commodities, trade goods and promissory notes, but cannot exchange other types of cards or tokens. The Emirates of Hacan can also exchange action cards with other players as part of transactions.
    the commentators discuss the trade and go over it being a good move and it all sounds legal and above board, but im confused on what they did to allow that speaker token to move players???

    • @zga042
      @zga042 5 лет назад +6

      I think it was a good faith trade. You can choose to make someone the speaker even if you're not "legally bound"

    • @hastyscorpion
      @hastyscorpion 5 лет назад +5

      MrMaawaa so the politics strategy card only states that the player activating politics must choose a player other than the speaker to give the speaker token too. It is perfectly legal for him to nominate someone other than himself. And since hakan can trade with anyone he is totally allowed to say "I will give you trade goods or a card if you nominate me as speaker".
      The trade would have been illegal if they had waited and done it on someone else's turn because at that point the Nalu player would no longer be nominating the speaker. So in practice they weren't trading the speaker token they were trading the right to be nominated. It is the same concept as trading something so someone will vote for you during the agenda phase.

      The tactical action has several phases beginning with activation, then movement, then space combat, then invasion, then ground combat, then lastly production. But the system that yellow moves from is a system that he has previously activated, and still has his token in it. Is not communicating that someone is winning part of the rules, or just tournament rules? Because the winnerbashing we have in our games is kinda crazy

    People actually have more then 5 senses although I don't think they have a standard numbering. Proprioception is basically where all your limbs are which is why you can find a light switch in the dark or type without looking. your sense of balence (which direction down is basically but technically it's sensing acceleration). Normally you don't notice it but it's what's thrown off after getting off after spinning quickly. Pain is a separate sense to touch. So are cold and I think hot has one or two sets of sensory nerves. Which is why you feel the warmth or a campfire or the sun. This also means blind people can tell when they are in sunlight or another source of infrared light. One really weird one is if you press on your belly button you get a different touch sense (the internal one) since there's no normal touch receptors there. I can't think of any others but I'm sure there are more. Basically we process a lot of information without thinking about it.

    How is the Speaker just giving the token to another player? I thought the Speaker token can't be used in a transaction. I couldn't tell if they are they using 'Politics'??

    • @SpaceCatsPeaceTurtlesPodcast
      @SpaceCatsPeaceTurtlesPodcast  2 года назад +4

      They are only "selling" the speaker during the activation of Politics. So it's merely selling the assigning of the speaker token

      @@MrTandtrollet So the more powerful factions are balanced by more meta game targeting? I wonder if that was what happened in this game with Sol.

      @MrTandtrollet 3 года назад +1

      @@TheCharlesFr At this "level of play" I would assume as much. It's a while since I saw this video. but I think Saar got targeted pretty hard since it is probably the best faction at scoring points and is incredibly hard to stop once it starts rushing for points.

      When you assign someone as the speaker during the use of Politics, people can pay you to have them chosen. This is referred to as "selling the Speaker Token." But it's not quite the same as a normal transaction
