This is an evolution of our larger shuttle using advanced materials. It fits beautifully into all the low Earth orbit projects planned in the near future.
This is not a shuttle it's a plane. Looks similar though. It's designed to bring cargo to the ISS with no crew aboard. Eventually it will adapted for passengers.
@@MegaGeorge1948 How are they marooned? There are several astronauts from other countries on board as well as food modules. They're "marooned" only in the sense that we can't bring them home.
It's thanks to Elon that NASA pushed this invention out. And I'll explain why... look at Elons Tesla, China started making It's own electric vechiles, and Elon was asked how he felt loose in the sales on ele tric cars, his response was, he didn't, bc now other companies around the world are making electric cars, so he lost, basically what he intended would happen. Now he's done the same to NASA with SpaceX. No SpaceX, no NASA space shuttle 😂
@@garymemetoo2238what makes it better if it's from a private contractor? NASA is still paying them for the R&D costs the company incurred and probably even more to cushion their profit margins.
16 sunsets is doing a series right now on the development of the shuttle. The nasa and air force partnership caused a lot of design issues with the shuttle. For example it was way oversized. The large bay was a military requirement for a still classified mission that never happened.
Good Space X competition for low Earth orbit. Although I cheer Space X’s achievements, being the only game in town is not a good strategy for the exploitation of outer space.
At 2:42 you mentioned NASA space center in Houston and showed the VAB in FL. For people that don't know confusing. Don't understand how you can make such a video and not get facts right.
We hope that the Chaser can truly be a workhorse. Quick turnaround, increased safety, economical reusabilty; this can be a leap forward. The space shuttle was designed by and utilized computer technology of the 1970s. With the advances made in materials, engine technology, and "space stuff", it should be a wonderful advancement. A Spanish galleon and a clipper ship look similar and work basically the same, but their capabilities are vastly different.
A much smaller plane but a company in NZ is testing and building a reusable drone that can take off and land on any runway and is designed to go up to the low obit, two times a day. Dawn Aero space. I guess over the next decade there will be lots of this sort of initiative.
Didn't this do extended duration classified space missions years ago? How can it be a maiden flight if its been doing secret missions since before the lockdowns? Am I missing something?
Well the description of "Space Plane" is not really correct. At most it could be classed as a "Space Glider".... As it needs a tow to get to space before it glides back down.
All that I see is a downsized space shuttle with less capacity. Does the Dream Chaser have a windshield to see though for the pilot or just tiles in the pilot area? I see both of these in your illustration. Some of your illustrations show the full sized Space Shuttle with the back cargo doors opening while talking about the Dream Chaser (bait and switch?).
Shades of the old "Dynaglider" from quite a number of years ago....50 or so.... The Dynaglider has issues due to lack of the electronics we have today, but the concept was sound.
I remember the Dyna Soar X-20 when I was a kid. I was hoping it would be our spacecraft. I believe they chose rockets over the Dyna Soar for cost and speed of development due to the Space Race at the time. It was technically a better path but NASA and the US Government wanted to win the Space Race and not have a superior spacecraft that finished 2nd in the race to the moon.
What is taking so long in producing this vehicle? I remember reading about this 10 years ago. Plus, it is still way to limited in its usage. Waiting to be impressed.
I always take a new space vehicle's predictions with a grain of salt. I remember in the late 1970's hearing NASA ads claiming the Space Shuttle would make other rockets obsolete and pay for itself. This didn't happen it and cost the lives of 14 people as well as 2 shuttles destroyed.
Didn’t they try this decades ago and decided it wasn’t cost effective enough and scrapped the whole “shuttle like” design. Like it would be absolutely awesome getting engines strong enough but they don’t get enough thrust to get out of the atmosphere i believe
Interesting clip, but more froth than beer. It’s obviously a newer and smaller version of the Space Shuttle (which was a stupendous achievement in itself - built nearly 50 years ago!) but how else is it different? Details, please.
Not too dissimilar, initially on the eye, than a shuttle. I assume that there is something in the design so scientific that the best shape is X and therefore that is why it is a little bit similar in some areas? Function over form.

I guess if BO makes it to orbit, and possibly lands for reuse, Dreamchaser may be better suited to launch on New Glenn rather than Starship, especially since SpaceX is to make Falcon obsolete.
OK, it doesn't sound like that much of a game changer. It sounds like more of a compact version of the space shuttle. I don't hear much in the way of capabilities that the space shuttle didn't already have except that it can fit inside a rocket.
Dreamchaser has been on the drawing board since the first shuttle test flight in 79/80. It's no better, probably WORSE. The feds have a bad habit of creating the highest price items using the lowest price bidder. I'm just trying to wrap my head around why we need it when we have our own population in near poverty.
So happy to see a 'space shuttle' type of legacy live on!
