We interviewed Diana Diamond about narcissism and its prevalence in our society today, all the way from healthy traits to Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

The antisocial traits of narcissism are what is most pathological about them for me. For example, if someone likes attention I think it can be okay, it doesn't mean they are "crazy". But when someone has those sadistic needs to constantly demean others or is highly aggressive when challenged about even the silliest conversation topics, then that is when I start to see that person is probably mental.

And this pathology is also on a spectrum. Even as a survivor I have to say that doesn't mean they are bad people

same bro. we are just ptsd sufferes. it is hard to live with an ailement in a time when reseach and achknowledgement of it is limited and new. It will get better just like with all treatments that become better over time. Are you in treatment? I am just starting myself.

I'm in psychodynamic treatment and it is hard as hell. Deconstructing slowly my narcissistic fantasy opens up the memory to really harsh experiences of my childhood. In treatment i got through really hard crises to feel the pain, rage and extreme guilt to integrated dissociated parts of myself and after one decade with the help of the therapists, psychiatrist and, very importantly, the youtube videos, I see my relationships getting far better and realistic.

That's a key idea: the specialness of the individual is really the specialness of their suffering. When you realize you not alone with baggage or past shit that is a very powerful diffuser. That can be the beginning of the end of maladaptive personality system.

I watch most videos at 1.5 speed, as I have a fast brain that processes and comprehends info quickly. I slowed this video down to normal speed because it is so dense with valuable insights about the less common traits of narcissistic psychopathology that complicate differential diagnosis. Love that!
    Narcissistic individuals who are...
    -masochistic
    -histrionic
    -self-defeating
The internal changes to a grandiose self are what signify narcissistic psychopathology (versus traits)...
-an idealized, unrealistic self that skews the personality
-an inability to regulate one's own narcissistic needs & requiring defensive grandiosity or withdrawing into vulnerable narcissism and the preoccupation with fantasy
-vulnerable narcissists as the kind whose grandiose defenses aren't working (life has been a series of mal-treatments, no one can ameliorate their misery, their suffering is "unique", and their specialness is in their suffering
(I call them the perpetual-pity-party narcissists and they love the role of the suffering martyr)
Bookmarking this one! A wealth of information...
Thank you for posting this, much appreciated~

She is so right in everything she said here. Only whom meet an covert can relate to this. Those are the reasons they are so dangerous too. They missinterpret and internalize everything about you and your behaviour, your "undeserving goods" or "unsufficient bads" is their rationalizing, so then they feel the urge to punish you, yes or yes. Nobody is more entitled then them and nobody has suffered more then them. Is kinda of a dead end. If you dare to criticize, shame or ask anything in return they will flip the tables so you can experience true suffering, not any kind of suffering but the way they suffered, and it literally feels like a stab in the back directly to your core and emotions. I'm so sorry for all the people who had gone through this. But now we all have a chance to learn. Just by knowing what happens things can change a lot.

I believe this whole heartedly. In my opinion, covert narcissists are the most insidious and dangerous of both types of NPD. My ex wife enjoyed punishing me and it was not until later that I found out that she would record my reactions and save them in order to get more supply down the line. She was sadistic and enjoyed hurting me. The love bombing was very effective and it wasn't until marriage and a child that I saw the true individual emerge. Covert narcs are definitely the most painful to deal with.

@@britishcodfish1472 I think they may mean that coverts are much harder to spot, so others may not realize the effects of emotional abuse until much later. Malignant are much more physically dangerous though.

Depending on the severity or if they've done any searching for information on their condition (which generally requires being ready to admit you might have NPD), individuals with covert subtype might not even be aware of all of their patterns of behavior that link to narcissism. It's not always intentional, similarly to BPD, the behavior might be subconscious and the emotions can feel extremely vivid and real to them, indistinguishable from reality until getting professional help and learning to identify it. That of course doesn't excuse any hurt inflicted, but it's important knowledge to know that it's not all always purposeful.

Everything said about vulnerable narcissists was so spot on. They seem to be miserable if they're not miserable and that's like the end of it. It's literally a black hole that will suck the life and spirti from everyone and everything. Seeking pity from everyone also reaches ridiculous states, even going to people who are much less fortunate in order to milk any once fo sympathy they can.

I seem to exhibit the leech type of traits that you describe, except the fact that I don’t desire to hurt others. It’s more that their interests isn’t really in my heart, as I am drowning in constant self doubt, self hatred and unstable sense of self.

    • @jamessanders145
      @jamessanders145 Год назад +1

@@felixir7368 I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles. These videos are generally meant for victims of narcissistic abuse to learn about what they experienced and about the condition itself, however none of that means that every person on your side of this is still a human who by all means deserves to be happy and in most cases isn't at fault for the circumstances that led to their situation. It's just hard for most people to be constantly thinking about those circumstances while at the same time trying to put up the boundaries and red lines needed to protect ourselves.
I really recommend that you find a specialist who treats NPD or even find RUclipsrs like Sam Vaknin who touch narcissism and educate from the standpoint of the narcissist. I think it's admirable for any narcissist to develop the self awareness necessary to get to this point and I wish you nothing but the best.

    • @Helena-to9my

Sam Vaknin is not someone to refer a person with npd to. He is cruel in his way to address people with npd as hopeless and needing to isolate, and just wait to die. Dr Diamond treats persons with npd and says she sees progress in therapy. Find a specialist in treating npd. Best wishes for you!

I agree 100% with Dr. Diamond's assessment of NPD. I'm just a hobbyist, but that was my understanding of NPD too, that it's dysregulation of self-esteem and narcissistic needs. Comparable to the emotional dysregulation you'd find in BPD. Great video!

I really apreciate Dr Diamond. However I don't understand her reasons for supporting the spectrum. NPD is the only spectrum that runs from 'healthy' to 'malignant'.
Not only is it awfully stigmatizing but it raises the question o f the other spectrums.
NPD is not a moral disorder. The abue is awful and we can't make it as partners. But the abuse is symptomatic of the disorder.
