I was so excited about the Mayan indigenous influences, the actors that are casted, and beyond happy that they included the colonial history aka genocide & slavery. You never see that in film with people with Mexican, Hispanic or even Latin heritage. Not just cast representation but story representation is so important and I’m so happy that Ryan Coogler went this route. I want to watch it over and over again. I want to know more about that society. So many in the comments said it so new and exciting to final see indigenous Mayan characters that aren’t in a subservient role, aren’t made to look like criminals, poor, dirty etc. negative stereotypes you see in Mexican Films. And I agree. Also I agree with so many comments here that said that it was exciting & important to see actually brown Mexican actors. Colorism is such a problem in Latin Films. Often light skin Mexicans, white passing, with “Spanish” features get casted in roles.
