The actual problem with Talking Angela is that "Angela" says really suggestive things to the kids playing it. That's where the rumors started.
yeah they really didn't code the AI very well. It needed more limiters. other talking apps had similar problems at the time. they just weren't as famous. with the exception of the one Microsoft made then removed.
Yeah, the only reason that even happened is because of how ai chatbots generate messages in the first place. Filters definitely would've mitigated that.
If you take a closer look at the make-up choices for Angela (at 11:15), one of them is ... "flirty makeup"? Hmm. It's like they couldn't decide whether to aim this at children or the e621 crowd and decided on both at once.

Even as a kid the addition of the man reflecting in Angela's eyes confused me. If someone were watching you, it would be through the device's camera, screen pixels are incapable of getting any sort of recording. I just remember being confused and thinking well there must be some truth to it, otherwise no one would actually believe it... And then I told my friend a really exaggerated and outlandish version of the urban legend because I knew she would believe it 😂😂
The whole "man in the eye" is stupid. Even if the app was hacked, they'd obviously not include a feature that could so easily expose them.
I'd be more concerned that those talking animal apps would record me but it's 2021 and nothing's private anymore

I was little when this theory got popular. I'm from Argentina and it even reached the media over here.
I remember having sleepovers with my best friend at the time. At 3 in the morning we would cover ourselves with blankets for protection, making a tent, while we chatted with Angela on my tablet. We truly believed this was all real... And the kids at school did too. Good times, hahaha.

It's so weird how big this got. I downloaded the game when I found out about the insane controversy and I turned out having a lot of fun with the app. I was surprised to see that she had a lot of responses to give, would talk about Paris and what to expect as a tourist, her experience in her new career (I believe it was a career, either that or studies, as either a fashion designer or a model), shed talk about her friends, her boyfriend, even would show you a music video. She could get deep as well and talk about mental health stuff. It's a shame they got rid of the chat.

I feel it could also be taken as "Why is attempting to 'grope' her producing a response?" As in, why is it an 'option' to touch naughty places? If there was no feedback from the character, the 'situation' would remain neutral and there'd be no allusions to sexual misconduct in a children's game. It's hard to explain, but I get it in my head. I'm not saying that's what that chick meant, but I do see how it could be a point. I was only 15 taking care of my two younger sisters, and paranoid on the daily basis. And the youngest decided to freak me out just for pure enjoyment and told me all about this, "brother, something is wrong with my Angela"
This video unlocked another core memory for me, the time I was alone and bullied in middle school so when I got my first smartphone I had this app installed there just so I can have someone to talk to. I wanted her to teach me how to talk to girls, then talked about favorite things and stuff. I heard of the rumors as well but I didn't believe them as they sounded way too ridiculous and I wasn't easily deceived lol
I remember when these rumors started coming out, I actually downloaded the app out of curiosity. Was sorely disappointed when there wasn't anything weird in it, no man in the eye no nothing :(

I absolutely love how you use the Petz Catz 2 ost. I grew up with that game and I can't express how happy it makes me feel when I hear the sound track being used outside the game 😌
I remember playing it one day on my phone during class because we weren't doing anything. My math teacher called my mom because she was afraid that it was spying on me. My mom ended up making a meeting with my teacher because it was just such a weird thing to hear your kids teacher tell you that your kid has Spyware on their phone.
So fun fact: the reason it looks like there's someone in her eyes is because there actually might be, at least a photo of someone. There's a library of photos used for making digital 3d models seem shiny and reflective, since things irl that are shiny are reflecting its environment, but obviously 3d models don't have that, so they use a database of photos to add textures that make the object shiny, which is probably why it seems like there's a guy in her eyes

Wow. This video sparked so many memories I didn't know I had. I remember hearing about this as a kid and wanting to investigate myself so I downloaded the app on my dad's phone and began taking screenshots and looking in her eyes. I also remember covering the front camera with my finger the whole time. Long story short, I didn't find anything (cause nobody was there, obviously) but seeing all the app reviews talking about this I felt like I had missed out on some big event.
I spoke to the funny cat lady then she look at me with bleeding hyper realistic eyes and when I look further there was a little man a he say. " hehehe I have your exact location " then the next morning I was DEAD!!!!

I remember when all this happened. My parents were reading the headlines and discussing the situation and I burst into tears, confessing that I too had the app myself. I was apologising to my parents and eventually begged my dad to reset my crappy iPad to factory settings I was so terrified. Now I’m 18 and i brought it up with my dad a few weeks ago and he said that when I left the room, him and my mum burst out laughing. Ah good times, thanks dad I was terrified for weeks lmao.

This is fairly unrelated but I remember as a child a classmate being very upset because her Moshi Monsters account got hacked, and then claimed that the only possible explanation could be that it had been hacked by Anonymous. Yes, that Anonymous. This then sparked a wave of 11 year old girls all claiming Anonymous had broken into and stolen their Moshi Monsters account. Finding out as a teenager that Anonymous was in fact a real group of anarchist hacktivists most known for attacking government institutions and the Church of Scientology was an interesting experience after I had innocently assumed for years that they were an urban legend perpetuated by Moshi Monsters and Club Penguin.

I remember when I was in elementary school; I downloaded Talking Angela, and when I mentioned it at school a boy told me about the rumor, and I immediately deleted the app when I got home cause I was a stupid kid. My favorite memory from this time is when I told another girl about this and we went online looking at every post about the rumor and piecing together theories; thinking we were true detectives lmao. This girl and I talked to each other a few times beforehand but I’ll never forget how we truly bonded over Talking Angela 😭.
