    G M Ed Parker said - approx - "You must vary the technique to fit the ever changing situations. We are not trying to make robots out of you. We are trying to make individuals out of you."

      No offense, but I think it's weird he said that.
      "We are not trying to make robots out of you." Then he proceeds with robot training. I mean, Kenpo is fun to watch, but for me it has too much "do this, then do this, then do THIS, and then do this."

    Hmm..I've always found kenpo interesting. I learned a teeny bit of eskrima/kali/arnis when I was younger..and noticed the speed of kenpo, and how in some ways the filipino arts had a few similarities. Great vid:)

      Unless you're as good as Bruce Lee, I have found Kenpo to be the best one for self defense. Some things can be thrown out, but a lot of it is very good. I learned good combinations that DO work from this art. As far as Ed's fighting goes, he was just so strong that he could get away with just about anything.

    • @pryzmcat
      @pryzmcat 6 лет назад +1

      I think Mr. Lee was indeed super talented, but again, he was visible..and had fame. Do I think he was the best? Nope. He was an innovator, and he was cocky..but again, I did not know him, I was just lucky to have learned from a person who did have a close connection to Dan Inosanto and Fred Degerberg and Cass Magda as well as Richard Bustillo. I used what I could and tried to develop an open mind. Kenpo has so many similarities to some of the concepts I learned. Isn't it great how common things can be found in all arts? And how the world has evolved so that knowledge can be more easily found? If you have not looked into Panantukan, you might find some interesting things there. Grand Master Baldissone has some very great straigtforward vids here on youtube. If you are incilned to learn different things, I think you might enjoy watching a few of them. Be well sir:( Thank you for your input:)

      I know people don't like to accept that there actually was a best martial artist, but there was and his name was Bruce Lee. Much like Michael Jordan dominated on the basketball court, Bruce Lee did that in the martial world. He is the only one who ever did 1500 push ups without stopping. He was at his peak in 1971 and nobody could've defeated him. I have respect for all great martial artists, but there was only one Bruce Lee. As far as I am concerned, no I am not up there with the best or even with most black belts. I was at one time about as good a little above average black belt in Kenpo, but certainly I was no master and I admit it too.

      Hi again Tim, I thought perhaps you might like to explore another legend of the martial arts world, much less known. Guro Angel Cabalis. Dan Inosanto, who of course you probably know of, was given some advice from another teacher, other than Bruce, to explore the martial arts of his heritage, as this teacher felt is would be well worth while to explore the fine Filipino Arts of the stick and knife. That great teacher who gave Inosanto the advice , was none other than Ed Parker:) Guro Cabalis and Parker were said to have made 'acquaintance " on a few occasions. But , how can one really know? Unless they were there? Kenpo is a fantastic martial art, I find much of the speed and agility to be akin to Eskrima/Kali/Arnis, not the SAME, mind you but there is a sort of kinship. Panantukan has recently held much more interest for me lately. I never receieved a belt, I am no master by any means at all, I just learned some very simple techniques, some principles of JKD, not too terribly much. But the most important technique I can say I learned and still work on , and struggle with is:..just breathe.

      Lennox there are many Kenpo techniques that begin with that exact premise. We always ask the question, what if? And your scenario, you're asking what if someone catches you off-guard? There are a number of Kenpo techniques that address that very question.

    Martial arts is a synergistic integration of the mental, spiritual and physical self and the natural elements to attain oneness, harmony, unity. Any real art form is peaceful, poetically evocative, edifying, inspiring, fortifying and it does not glorify senseless violence. The rudimentary principle of martial arts is not to do harm to others, to protect the vulnerable and self-defense. Evidently, the ego, the false self deludes so many people and that's why they exhibit animal behavior and confrontations transpire and the ensuing violence escalates. This modern obsession with UFC, MMA stems from the reptilian brain, soullessness of corporate product, marketing and it is a desecration of the artistry of life and of creation.

    This is scripted nonsense. Blocking attacks that are so out of range you could stand still and they wouldn't connect. Throwing one punch and standing still to let Mr Parker perform 3, 4, 5 strikes or more. This is so unrealistic. Lets see this applied as demonstrated under a real pressure test.

    • @richardthemagician8991
      @richardthemagician8991 6 лет назад +3

      Travis Williams I can understand why somebody outside the system I think that by watching these videos. I'm a second degree black belt in American Kenpo. What I teach what every other instructor that I know of teaches is that these techniques arment to teach and tune the basics. The techniques are not formulas to be used actual street fight confrontation. It is no different than what everyone else does and every other style of martial arts. You learn some basic Maneuvers and you put together some combinations of those basic maneuvers to give context. The main difference is Kenpo is built its entire system around self defense techniques While others don't Focus much on techniques but rather on forms.

    • @TravisWilliams_
      @TravisWilliams_ 6 лет назад +3

      Richard The Magician sorry but completely disagree! The self proclaimed grand master is showing a ton of bullshido. The vast majority of this won’t work. It’s all flash and extremely impractical for a real world situation.

    • @richardthemagician8991
      @richardthemagician8991 6 лет назад

      Travis Williams sorry, maybe I didn't make myself clear enough with what I said. My fault. Why I meant was these high-level techniques aren't designed to "work" in a real-world situation. The earlier techniques are. Yellow belt in Orange Belt techniques. And those techniques to work in real-world situations. I know cuz I was bullied a lot as a kid and I've had to use a few of them on occasion, unfortunately. Advanced Techniques with extensions are designed to fine-tune timing, rhythm, as also mental training. They are designed with more complicated footwork and maneuvers for the sake of fine tuning and advanced maneuvering. What I ever execute one of these techniques in real life based on any of these attacks? Likely not. But, training with these Advanced maneuvers and footwork and combinations how to hone your basic skills. You can think of every technique as an its own mini form. Which is what most other styles of karate are based on. Forms. The reason why we have so many techniques the American Kenpo is instead of drilling a particular kick, punch, or block a thousand times, we put them in the context of a self-defense technique. Helps the train you in recognizing potential threats, targets, and spatial relations. American Kenpo is not a fighting style. It's a self-defense Style. We want to get out of the situation as quickly as possible. And by drilling the techniques over and over again, when someone does offer an attack, your body can simply react to it rather than think about it.

    • @TravisWilliams_
      @TravisWilliams_ 6 лет назад +3

      Richard The Magician you just explained why kenpo isn’t effective. If you don’t perfect basic movements, punches, kicks etc and focus on techniques that are useless then your training is useless. You can train footwork effectively without tying it to a useless form. This guy can’t even perform a kick with proper form. You want to practice a basic punch and kick a thousand times. Footwork is developed by full contact sparring, learning your range and setting up your attacks. Practising with a compliant dummy does no good for when you do get into a conflict where the person will not allow you to do want you want you’re going to be in for a big shock. Simple is best especially with economy of movement. You can’t master anything if you haven’t mastered the basics.

    • @richardthemagician8991
      @richardthemagician8991 6 лет назад +1

      I think the confusion here is the difference between self-defense and martial arts. We are simply talking about two different things. If all you care about is self-defense, then you are right. There is no need to advance your art. For people who are only concerned with defending themselves, I tell them to just buy a gun and call it a day. But, martial arts is a totally different thing. You will learn self-defense as you study martial arts. But, there is the whole art side to martial arts. It's like telling a professional painter they only need to learn a couple of brush strokes. Or a professional musician they only need to learn a couple of songs to get by. American Kenpo, like any other form of art, is a lifelong discipline. To put it another way, you can tell a gun owner they only need one gun to protect themselves, but seriously, who only ever wants to own one gun?! If you like guns, you will transcend the beyond just owning one for self-defense. You will learn everything about them. Collect them. Go to conventions. Learn how they all work and do your damnest to practice with as many as you can get your hands on. Karate is no different. So, again, you are right if all we are talking about is self-defense.

All that being said, kenpo karate is a waste of time as is most non-competitive martial arts. It may have a place as a form of exercise but most definitely NOT in the realm of self defense or lawful violence such as a police officer controlling a aggressor or a soldier in a confined area.
