Just thought the same after watching this video again? Nadal has 6 majors in hard court, could be 7 (that injury in AO...) And watching these highlights he looks like a hard court specialist, some of the volleys are insane!
I rate this as the best victory of Nadal's career. The way he dismantled Djokovic on a hard court following a succession of heartbreaking defeats in hard court Grand Slams in previous years is just inspiring. The memories of this win should fire him up whenever he is down in his career. Vamos!
Gherbi Hicham That's a great point. He only won French before that match. But I am not rating it in terms of 'importance' but rather the 'quality' of the victory. Nadal was on a roll against Fed, a mental advantage which he never had against Djokovic, in fact it was the other way around after the horrendous 2011. That's why Nadal will be always a better player for me than Fed, he actually solved the Djokovic problem, and not aided by any dip in the other's game, but solely due to his own courage and physical effort, unlike Fed who never could really solve the Nadal-problem.
This is the most emphatic win of Nadal’s career..... yes Wimbledon 08 was big but dude...... no one was beating this man in this day. Djokovic actually gave up in the 4th set... he knew there was noooo chance
This past game is still so enjoyable even 8 years later today. Amazing, Rafa. You are the most TENACIOUS player ever seen in tennis history indeed. I bet you will win French Open tomorrow again.
As a Djokovic fan, 2013 and 2014 were very frustrating. Nole and Rafa played 9 matches against each other in that period; Novak leading 5-4. However Nadal won all the big Grand Slam matches (3-0), whereas Novak always won the less important master 1000 or ATP500 matches (5-1). Djokovic was better in less important matches and Nadal was better where it really mattered.

@@travisbickle5279 Yes, what a match, Novak was in the ropes the entire match and still managed to win! Kinda feel sad for Roger tho. None of them deserved losing
The level of tennis of them playing against each other it's not humanly possible for normal players, that final AO 2012,RG 2013,and this one US 2013,ok ok I know a lot a people will say that Nadal and Federer are best rilvalry and all,but there's a difference here,Nadal vs Federer it's like Fire vs Ice,Nadal vs Djokovic is like Fire vs Fire,It's like a Fight,a War in every aspects of the game, they never give up of a single point,Federer plays so much on the strategy but Nadal and Djokovic is like a shooting until the last bullet, toe to toe,it's a fight to the death style of match, for me Nadal vs Djokovic is the best and most brutal rilvary of the history of the tennis,my opinion, and I really don't think that the level of the final AO 2017 Nadal vs Federer was better than AO 2012 Nadal vs Djokovic and maybe US 2010 and 2011 finals as well.
Yan Okimura nadal vs djocovic is like defende vs defense. They are looking for others vulnerability rather than taking risky shots, but when it comes to federer vs nadal, it will be best offense vs best defence. Both players have a complete contrasting style which make the game have more varieties than any other game. I am excluding AO 2012. About AO 2017, both players are well past their prime which dimnished federers forehand and running attack all around the court, whereas Nadal lost his speed and spinning rate
Yeah well,I like this Hammer vs Hammer style of play,I like more brutal rallies than varieties,I like a match that the players go to the limits of their limits like Novak and Rafa,Roger and Rafa is simple, the victorious come when one are playing better than the other no mystery, nothing unexpected...but Novak Djokovic Vs Rafael Nadal is like.....Rangers vs Krauts #Respect
Yan Okimura opinions may vary. But because of that you could never declare roger rafa is simple. Rafa djocovic is like running across the base line. Rafa federer is like running all across the court. Moreover, Fedal rivalry is the only rivalry which have been compared to the standards of borg mcenroe and nadal djocovic rivalry is considered the second best rivalry of 21st century Reference Atpworldtour.com
Rafa and Novak not just cover all court as you can see in this hightlights, but they both are faster than Roger man, sorry about that but it's true,Roger is more efficiet on all aspects, but Rafa and Novak from 2012 to 2015,are faster, you need to rewatch the hightlights...and bealieve or not,ask the great Roger about the level of this match, and he's gonna answer honestly as a champion he is...
Yan Okimura, I feel the same way. Djokovic vs Nadal is simply the best rivalry of tennis. Their matches have always been so brutal, even since their first matches you could see them returning ridiculous shots, and the quality of their rallies is out of this world. But discussing this in an era where almost everyone is a fan of either Nadal or Federer is very difficult. I feel that 10 or 20 years from now, people will be more aware of how great this rivalry really was, and even give the proper credit to Djokovic's achievements.
Best match ever, never saw a fight at this level between them. And when Nadal was at his prime simply nobody could beat him. Best player of history, best and most passionate fighter, and the most fun to watch!
The world has never seen another player like the great Rafa,Greatest forehand ever and he has various ways of hitting it.No one can hit a forehand like him from very wide of the court and make it curl round the net with such velocity and accuracy. His backhand is just as lethal as his forehand and his volleys are just pure skill What that makes him the greatest out of the 3 is the way he can produce magic under extreme pressure..The way he beat then a very inform Federer at Wimbledon to win against the greatest player on grass proves his level of greatness. His serve is not big but make no mistake he knows how to utilise his lefty serve sometimes with power to great advantage. Nadal always displays dexterity against Novak and Federer. Some of the points I have seen him win against them and other players like Medevev who play well against him are just mind blowing. Nadal is the only player that can seem to achieve the impossible when you are thinking this is not possible. How many times have you heard commentators scream in disbelief using words like "Oh my God how did he do that ".I have never seen such a combination of skill ,determination and imperious execution of shots from all varieties. There is only one Rafa and he is a blessing to tennis.Nothing more entertaining on our screens than a Rafa match.Long live his career as its we who will lose out when he retires.
The same could be said for Nole as well at the AO & Wimbledon. We can give Rafa the edge at the U.S Open as he has a 2-1 lead to Nole there, but Rafa never beat Nole at the AO, while Nole has beaten Rafa twice at his golden house, and Nole leads the h2h 2-1 at Wimby, so overall Nole is the greatest and most unbeatable ever.
Nonsense, their fight at the 2012 AO Final was better than this. Nole wasn’t his complete self in this match. Not taking anything away from Rafa but their match at the 2012 AO final was the true hardcourt match for the ages.
On a clay court, you mean! Put any hard-court Rafa you want against pre-Roland Garros 2016 Djokovic. Especially Doha 2016 Djokovic(when he annihilated Rafa) or first 2 sets in AO 2016 against Roger. Maybe 2010 or 2013 Rafa would take a set. At the very most!
@@jay_kulina Nadal was not in good form, in 2016. In fact, not long after Nadal won the 2014 FO, his form declined. And it lasted throughout 2016 (with him being in his worse form, in 2015). But, 2010 Nadal would've destroyed any HC version of Djokovic. And Djokovic made it CRYSTAL CLEAR to the entire world that he could only have defeated Nadal at the FO, when Nadal was in his worse form ever! And No, I do not mean just on clay court! Because, prior to 2011, Nadal held a 2-0 h2h lead against Djokovic on grass (in addition to 9-0 on clay). And he had also won more slams than Djokovic on ALL surfaces. Djokovic slam count accelerated when Federer and Nadal started to slow down, during the later years of the rivalry. Most of his geater accomplishments took place from 2011 and beyond (at which point Federer was 30 yrs and older). And the effects of injuries had also caused Nadal to slow down during some of those later years. In fact, in 2015, when Djokovic recorded his best season, Federer was about 34 yrs old. And Nadal (as I pointed out before) was in his worse form. But of the 1st 20 GS titles of the Federer/Nadal/Djokovic rivarly dating back from 2006, Djokovic won ONLY 1. Federer won 9. And Nadal won 8 (including 4 away from clay). So, what are you talking about?
@And Siq beat the greatest returner in the game with serve? Nah, i don't think so! Don't get me wrong, USO 2010 Rafa was impressive overall and his serve was godlike for his standards. But could he beat AO 2016 or Doha 2016 Djokovic? I just can't see it. Maybe push it to a 5-setter. Not even. I think it would be a 4-hour 3-1 win for Novak. Maybe i'm wrong, we will never know. For me peak Novak is the scariest thing that has happened in hard-court tennis and second overall after 2008 RG Rafa.
2009 AO open final was his best. That was the only final where Nadal and Federer had a point to prove. Fed having lost at Wimbledon and his No.1 title and Nadal to see if he can back up grass and become an all court player.
@@rassvet1612 strange reasoning. Nadal was clearly an all court player and was innevitably going to win a hard court grand slam. 2013 is massive because of how much Djokovic had battered Nadal outside of clay in previous years. And more so because its one of few times hes outplayed (a very strong) djok. The manner of victory combined with pschological strength it took to do so makes this one of/ if not the Greatest Nadal GS win He needs something similar again Nadal has not beaten Djok on hard SINCE THIS MATCH
@@notdn Prime nadal is actually betwen 2008-2011 with 2013 as his best hardcourt year. In 2011 he played amazing but we already know who stopped him. Nowadays, they both are very equal but stats favours djokovic a bit.
Not Wimbledon 2008 or AO 2009 Final? I’d rather those over US open 2010, but at the same tier of us open 2013. Although, us open 2010 did complete the career slam..
Nadal slips and falls while being a break down in third set, with another break back looming large. But, he stood back up straight away, held the serve and broke back to level, and won the set. Could have been a turning point in the match, but Nadal, a character as steel that he got, held his nerve to take control instead of going down and winning it. What a match though; Djoko and Nadal being two of the best returners of the game means that every match up between them has been a colossal to watch for the spectators. Incredible!!!
That comeback game and break 0-40 down in the third set after stumbling to a Djokovic winner. That is why Nadal is the GOAT. No one comes close to his mental fortitude
Rafa is like “fighting spirit” When it comes to mentality no one comes close against Novak because he actually improves his game when the his legacy is on the line
The crazy thing is that this match is the third time he did that in a slam final. He did it twice against Federer in the third set of the RG 2006 and AO 2009 finals.

@@parthjagtap5447 Not naturally gifted? Nadal had the most titles as a teenager ever (16 titles tied with Borg) , he defeated the reigning French Open winner when he was 16, defeated Federer at his prime when he was 17, has the best forehand of all time, is the best volleyer of the current generation (yes including Federer in that list as well, this noted by John McEnroe not me), he comes up with the most amazing plays you can ever see (yet to see a match where he doesn't pull up something almost impossible for most of the tour) and his skill and touch are incredible to say the least. This ongoing idiotic trend of reducing Nadal to just "hard work" and "physicality" is becoming laughable, Nadal is one of the most talented and naturally gifted athletes of all time.
Outside of clay, in my opinion there have been 3 times that Rafa played out of this world tennis on non clay slams. 2008 Wimbledon, 2010 U.S Open and this one the 2013 U.S Open. 2010 being the best. When he served in the 130's and ground strokes were lethal too.
@@yuval130geeahrs4 He won in 2019, but he was just solid and didn't play anyone that good. I think he played his best in 2010 when he was serving in the 130's. 2013 he played great too, great ground strokes. And 2008 Wimbledon against Fed was one of the best matches ever. 2022 is yet to be determined. I hope he can in this year. We'll see.
Every time I watch this video I am stupefied by the shotmaking these two GOATs could make. Not to undermine the current Gen of tennis but the likes of Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Thiem and Zverev would have been crushed by these legends had they played like this today as well. The speed and power even through 5 sets these two could produce coupled with extreme accuracy was just mind boggling. Beyond Federer I doubt any player could have ever matched this intensity consistently.
Absolutely gutted for what happened there. Nadal has declined massively from what he was here. It's like he simply doesn't have the stroke strength on backhands and forehands anymore.
Chinoo Tripathi yeah, he seemed so “old” today 😔 but I think the main problem was that he was playing vs djokovic... He’s got a mental block or something when he faces him, because for the rest of the tournament (with lesser opponents for sure) played much better than today. I feared he would be the loser but not like this, given what he had shown...
@@wildwind5571 Yes I do agree on that. But today it felt like, I was watching an old Hewitt playing, there were simply no positives, he was not able to put pressure on Djokovic's first serve, and was only relying on rallies, where he was absolutely demolished.
Chinoo Tripathi yeah today he was massacred... But I want to believe him when he says that fitness was the main issue and that with work he can get to level of at least putting pressure on djokovic. I’m hoping for a final against him in RG, if rafa could win maybe he could regain confidence playing djokovic and beat him on other surfaces too
@@wildwind5571 I hope this is not the end of my childhood, as I grew up watching Rafa- Roger and Rafa - Novak rivalry. The way Rafa played today, it felt like the end is very near for him, and suprisingly even faster than Roger and Novak. His injuries really did the damage to him, otherwise, we would have seen a lot more matches like this in years to come. I also hope Andy can find something in his game, and Australian open was not his last gs.
I remember Nadal playing incredibly well this tournament. I believe he had yet to drop a service game up until a certain point near the quarterfinals, if not at the qf if I’m not mistaken. It wasn’t just that he was beating everyone in his path. He was eviscerating them.
@Elias definitely not on a hard court. Djokovic did well to get a set and with better luck he could've won 2. Djokovic on his day would be able to beat this Nadal imo
@Elias do you know that this is the last time that Nadal beat Novak on HC was at USO 2013 and AO 2014(the next slam) was the last time he beat Federer on HC?

Djokovic struggles with both Nadal and Wawrinka whenever they use the tactic of going down the line to his forehand while he camps out on his backhand wing. Djokovic's backhand is an extraordinary weapon for defense and the best counter to Nadal's beastly topspin, but he can't blast winners like Wawrinka or even Murray with it.
Just sad to come back to this Nadal has lost 40% of his speed and clutch shot making but the world still awes in 2022 just go back and watch the man in his 20's pure legend.
And still they say Rafa is not aggressive.... Just because he takes more strokes before the final blow, doesn't make him less aggressive.... Also how smoothly he transitions from defence to offence....
@@archiesutherland6127 He is not a "defensive baseliner" at all on hard courts. On clay courts he is also not a "defensive baseliner" but you can see why he doesn't have to redline because his clay court game is soooo good. I enjoy Rafa's 2009 AO F, 2019 USO F and 2022 AO F the most actually and can rewatch those matches over and over again. On clay he is so damn good that the other guy never stands a chance and grass court is so boring with short rallies and a lot of unforced errors by both rafa and roger in the 2008 Wimbledon F.
I Just love how Nadal has improved his game against particular players Djoker and Thiem!! 2019 Monte Carlo and RG finals are the greatest example of that, it was like Carlos is doing great work on Nadal :) #vamosRafa.
There were 2 moments that decided this match in Rafa''s favor, in my opinion. 1. When Novak had 2:0 in the 3rd set and failed to make the second break. 2. When Novak had 3 break points at 4:4 in the same 3rd set but again, failed to convert any. My opinion is that Nole's mental game was shattered at those points, especially at the one at 4:4. Up to that moment, both of them were pretty much head to head in this match.
Actually that is true but the reality was that he went down on himself far too much following the French Open semi defeat in the semi and it gutted him for the rest of the Summer, his backhand was malfunctioning in the tournament and a statistic showed that unless he corrected it he would lose the final...the backhand that he overcooked for the double break that would have almost sealed the third set was an example of that...
agree completely this final and wimbldeon 2013 was 2 worst of djokovic career, mentally broken completely and go dwon after that 3rd set which he should have won
Augustin Abraham Nadal was definitely at his best here, especially on hard courts. He never ever played as well as he did in 2013 on hard courts. You deluded boy.
In terms of tennis quality it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a better possible match than Rafael Nadal v Novak Djokovic. If they both play each other at their highest level it's the best tennis exhibition you can see in history.
wow what a match! Even the Andy Murray of 2016 doesn't come close to the level that these two displayed in this match. The 2017 Australian Federer-Nadal final pales in comparison also.
It's June 2023, Federer retired last year, Rafa just had hip surgery, announced 5 months to heal, has been out injured since January's Australian Open. Announced 2024 will be his last year playing. Djoker still playing.
Need this Rafa again. Please don't tell me he's aged. He didn't. 30 is not that bad and he still got the power and speed to go against the best players. Sure, he's not as fast as 2005 or 2010 or even 2013, but is still one of the fastest in the tour and he has all the shots. Justt need some better serving. I really believe that Nadal can win some more hardcourt slams like the AO or US Open.
2017 started well I would say. Rafa was amazing during the whole tournament and in the final too, but Fed was just sensational.. Now I have high hopes for the French Open and why not the US Open. He can also go for 1-3 masters 1000 this year.
Underrated epic match 👏👏 Sometimes even a 4 setter can produce absolute magic & the way they both applauded eachother for their breathtaking shots made it even more special.
The difference between Nadal's landing forehand positions compared to the 2011 US Open final is staggering, in 2011 he constantly gave Djokovic a target going short to his backhand and once Djokovic hits the flat backhand to the Nadal forehand and it drops deep, Nadal is instantly on the defense. Here, every time Djokovic played the backhand to the forehand Nadal either goes down the line with forehand putting Djokovic instantly on the defense or goes deep to his backhand making Djokovic hit a a very hard defensive shot. The difference between Nadal vs Djokovic has always been decided in that single exchange between the backhand and the forehand, who ever controls that exchange is usually the winner.
This third set... So so so many break points and double break points. One of the biggest hold-up I have ever seen. If Djokovic mad the double break in the third set, the end result would have been so much different.
but in the last 7 years Nadal couldn't win against Djokovic and Federer on hard court. Amazingly Nadal lost the last 15 matches against Djokovic and Federer on hard court! OK about Djokovic, but what about Federer? Is he improving against Nadal on hard court? How older how better?

Moreover, Fedal rivalry is the only rivalry which have been compared to the standards of borg mcenroe and nadal djocovic rivalry is considered the second best rivalry of 21st century
Reference Atpworldtour.com
The 2013 season of Rafael Nadal is considered as one of the best tennis seasons ever
This match is a perfect example of Nadal's tenacity and will to win. What an amazing fighting spirit he has. Absolutely remarkable !
I enjoy watching Nadal teach the doubters and haters a lesson. He was not expected to win this match....but he did. Nadal Is My Champion!
TG.
Oh yeah nadal is now in Novak's shadow as true greatness reigns
Nadal is one of the most interesting players to watch while playing tennis 🎾
Underrated match from two legends🐐🐐
Rafa's mentality in third set was unbelievable 👏❤️
How ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL to see Rafa and Djokovic going AT IT!!! RAFA WAS GREAT!!!! AND, he'll CONTINUE to bel!!!!!
Nadal hits the backhand so much harder now..
But he hits the forehand so much harder then (more top spin)
His backhand was frighteningly good at Wimbledon in 2018.
Imagine saying this when you haven’t even seen AO 2022 final
How about AO 2012 Final?
Nadal was just a beast during his prime. No one could touch him.
@@jay_kulina
Nadal was not in good form, in 2016.
@@jay_kulina totally agree
@And Siq beat the greatest returner in the game with serve? Nah, i don't think so! Don't get me wrong, USO 2010 Rafa was impressive overall and his serve was godlike for his standards. But could he beat AO 2016 or Doha 2016 Djokovic? I just can't see it. Maybe push it to a 5-setter. Not even. I think it would be a 4-hour 3-1 win for Novak. Maybe i'm wrong, we will never know. For me peak Novak is the scariest thing that has happened in hard-court tennis and second overall after 2008 RG Rafa.
@And Siq I don't disagree with that at all. Prime Rafa can't be beaten on clay.
Still one of my all time favourite djoko vs nadal matches. Such long rallies, high quality and few mistakes
Nadal vs Djokovic matches are so good! No matter who wins... those matches are brutal!
This match and Wimbledon 2008 to me are the most impressive and important Nadal victories.
His match against Thiem at USO 2018 was also classic.
The manner of victory combined with pschological strength it took to do so makes this one of/ if not the Greatest Nadal GS win
He needs something similar again Nadal has not beaten Djok on hard SINCE THIS MATCH

Insane level of play- one of the best matches I've ever seen.
This match, and the USO10 final are possibly the two most satisfying matches as a Nadal fan.
Not Wimbledon 2008 or AO 2009 Final? I’d rather those over US open 2010, but at the same tier of us open 2013. Although, us open 2010 did complete the career slam..
Agreed. But Now I add, AO 2009, RG 2020, and AO 2022 for completely different reasons.
7 years later, 7 more Grand Slams and consistently #2 in the world. I guess Rafa still has it.
Nadal was the best in 2013 Hardcourt 22:0 It's incredibly
Grand Slam he lost twice to Djokovic and he lost to Del Potro and Ferrer in the indoor swing.
in 2013 he won twice against djoko in 2013(RG&USO)
won Canada-Cincy-USO in a row, nobody since Rafter and Roddick did, no Djoker, no Federer, no Murray.......
German M. Yes it was so cool but one Year later he withdrew from all tournaments same in 2012
ferzy09 Federer injured? Del Potro fucked Federer. And nadal did to delpo
That comeback game and break 0-40 down in the third set after stumbling to a Djokovic winner. That is why Nadal is the GOAT. No one comes close to his mental fortitude
Rafa is like “fighting spirit”
When it comes to mentality no one comes close against Novak because he actually improves his game when the his legacy is on the line
The crazy thing is that this match is the third time he did that in a slam final. He did it twice against Federer in the third set of the RG 2006 and AO 2009 finals.
Cette accolade au filet à la fin. On vpit tout le respect qu'ils ont l'un pour l'autre. Ils se poussent à être meilleur et c'est fantastique !
Who said that Rafa is the best only on clay? If he hadn't so many injuries all these years, he could have more than 25 GS..GOAT

@Anubhav Mahapatra I think what he meant was he's not naturally gifted as he just works tremendously hard to improve his game
Injuries are part of the game. If your opinion applies to federer he could have won 30+ grand slams.
One of the greatest victories of Nadal against his arch enemy, Perhaps THE GREATEST.
Nadal on fire in this match
That 54 shot rally was out of this world....
2019 !!! 2022
That third set was everything. Rafa saving those break points at 4-all and then the break in the next game were well fought for.

Bro they played a 54 shot rally at 6:45 and it wasn't like they were pushin the ball or hitting it soft at all.. That's pretty fuckin incredible
is anyone else watching after AO 2019? I need it to regain mental sanity

Djokovic struggles with both Nadal and Wawrinka whenever they use the tactic of going down the line to his forehand while he camps out on his backhand wing.
I agree. Being an emotional player such as Novak, his mentality has always played a very big part in his game, both in success in failure.

Absolutely spot on rally wise
@juneaug Lok We all know you're a super genius, I was merely pointing this out for mere mortals.

The king of clay plays pretty well on hard courts as well😉
but in the last 7 years Nadal couldn't win against Djokovic and Federer on hard court. Amazingly Nadal lost the last 15 matches against Djokovic and Federer on hard court! OK about Djokovic, but what about Federer? Is he improving against Nadal on hard court? How older how better?
@@wimgroart1870 but I never said that he is Better than djoko & fed on hard court, I only said that he is fucking good on hard courts too.. and with 5 slams and 10 masters 1000 won on that surface I don't think you can say otherwise 😂
@@wimgroart1870 ,Nadal has declined in ability to play on hard courts
@@archiesutherland6127 He don't like the court
@@archiesutherland6127 Even after AO 22? 😏
Amazing he beats a titan like Nole in his own game
Respect
Wow this was amazing needed it after Australian open 2019
At this Final Nadal hit the ball so clean and deep. Nadal at his best was better than Nole on US Open hard courts but in Australian Hard courts Djokovic is the King.
