No matter what the numbers, Federer is the best tennis player of history. His tennis is superclass, is inteligence and beauty. The perfection. This match is an example. I am Spanish, and I love Nadal and I will always want him to win, but... Federer's tennis is perfection, is why the classic tennis is classic, is the way teachers teach tennis. And is just beautiful, you watch Federer playing and you feel some satisfaction that you don't feel with other players. And this match was amazing, both they were playing their best.

I remember waking up at 3AM to watch this. I could not believe the quality of this match. Every shot was competitive, there was no letting off the gas for either one. It was the greatest heavy weight battle I have ever seen. Nadal played hard courts like I never seen him play before. This was his greatest hard court performance. But Federer was simply amazing in his comeback and it took five sets to subdue his rival. His backhand was no longer his weakness. He stopped running around it and started to just pound away in the last set. He was down a game and with nothing to lose, he unleashed the beast. Five games in a row against his nemesis to seal the win. Federer will always be the GOAT simply because he is the most gifted player the world has ever seen, even Rod Laver said Fed is the greatest player regardless of who wins more majors. And when the pressure to win was off his back in this match, he played without a care in world. You can see the relaxed look on his face like no other of his slam finals. I loved the French commentary. They seemed so excited at every point. Screaming and shouting like kids, unlike any Frenchmen I know. Wonderful.

While I normally don't like Fowler - as he's a huge Nadal homer and it shines through in a greasy fashion throughout his commentary - he together with both McEnroe's make for intelligent dialogue where each guy chimes in at the right time. They also know when to amp it up for dramatic effect. These French guys are too dramatic, too often, and usually just repeat themselves.

This is one ilike watching. Others, fed vs roddick, fed vs blake, fed vs agassi, fed vs sampras, etc. fed’s variety of shots, fantastic backhand, graceful movement, not grunting , good serve... beautiful to watch.

One thing that is certain is that however Nadal has usually succeded against Roger with his forehand, he does not have much of a plan B. If attacking Federer's backhand doesn't work, there's not much Nadal can do (I don't mean he has no chance, but that then Roger generally dominates the game). In this match (and in this AO in gral.) Roger's backhand was a whole new level of insanity.

This version of Federer is nothing special. His success was due to low competition or not competition at all, not sure what you prefer more. The only reason Fed won here is because Nadal simply doesn't have the game on hard courts anymore, but he would still have crucified him on clay if Fed hadn't skipped it. His game didn't really change that much since 2015 when he was probably playing tennis of his life, but got destroyed by Nole in almost every important match they played. Just look at 2018 final, a clown like cilic, who is just too weak mentally ( even weaker than Fed), can't move for shit and most importantly is utterly incapable of returning a serve, should have won if he hadn't choked. 2013 Nadal would murder this Fed on hard courts let alone 2015 Djoko, who is simply unplayable on slower/medium hard courts. Federer never ever really dominated hard courts, maybe only extremely fast/low bouncing courts like Cincinnati. Djokovic is simply the most complete player ever. He can adjust to any fucking conditions and the word "bad matchup" simply doesn't exist for him. If you had to choose a player to play for your life, who would you choose? Federer, who is so mentally fragile that he can be 2:0 and 5:0 and still lose a match, who is usually countered by heavy topspin, high bouncing balls, slower courts, won't even talk about clay etc. On the other hand you have Djokovic, who is simply unplayable; he has all the freaking shots against any player you name on ANY surface. Djokovic's mentality is something to behold, something Federer never ever had.

+Simon Cowell fed owned Nadal the last five times.... Feds had lots of competition, Novak's far from the complete player as he's super defensive can't attack for shit... Get the federer if 2004/2007 v these guys, on hard court he flogs them.... Novak's got twelve slams and will never catch fed

    • @cloudhigh6582

To be fair Nadal was sloppy and kept going back to his backhand, he was too slow to adjust. Perfect example is in the 5th set when Nadal was up 3-2, so many soft shots straight back to his backhand.
