    Michigan Oline just dominate that year; backus, Jansen, and Hutchinson. Used the play action to perfection in this game. Wsu had a great chance early to go up 10-0 or 14-0 but the Woodson INT changed momentum and wolverines never looked back.

    I will never forget being there with my dad. I was 13 and my dad was about to turn 50. The last time Michigan had won a National Championship was 1948, the year my dad was born. While celebrating on the field after Michigan had just beaten Ohio State (this is the only Michigan game of the dozens I've been to that the fans stormed the field) my dad told me, "There is no way we are not going to Pasadena." It was awesome.
    Strange fact; the marching band's drum major that year was from Pasadena, California. Tell me that is not destiny!

    That play action roll out to Tuman was money that enitre 1997 season.
    Tuman had a simple but great quote that season when asked about it. He said (paraphrasing), "If you throw me the ball, I'll catch it." Pretty simple, but it underlines a quiet confidence.

    God this just hurts, brings back memories. I was 14 years old. Dad bought a 36" TV just to watch the game. We invited all the neighbors over. The house was filled with 30-40 people. The energy level was so damn high. And we were robbed of the potential last play... the game was over and nobody knew what was going on.... we all just stood there stunned. It was like a nuclear explosion just went off and nobody knew where to find their underwear.... it was just "over". Still to this day, I'm not sure if we still had one last play to run... it felt like a loss due to a technicality. What I wouldn't give to have one.last.play. I'll go to my grave wanting just one last play. #ForeverLEAF

      Maybe so but throwing for the final 26 yards (shorter field than the two previous passes) in one play against that Michigan defense is NO easy task. I'd say you definitely should've had it had it not been for a missed offensive pass interference call on Taylor's catch over Woodson to get near midfield. Either way I can see how this would leave a bad taste in your mouths. WSU DID INDEED play well enough to beat just about anybody that day.

    • @alexcentury2166
      @alexcentury2166 3 года назад

      There were two seconds. The ball can not be snapped until one second after the referee gives the ready for play signal, and then the play has to take at least one second, which takes the clock down to zero. The NCAA put in the rulebook a few years ago that to have a chance at 1 second left, there must be three seconds on the clock if you’re going to spike it.

    Ok,.here's my take on the dream matchup of Michigan vs Nebraska for the national Championship, had they played after the Bowls.
    I'm old school, not some biased kid of the past generations. I'm raised on Buckeye and Sooner football as illinois and northwestern were so bad when i was young they were never on tv, lol.
    The dream matchup?...NEBRASKA, ..and i dont think it would be all that close. Can't see Michigan holding up for 4 quarters as the Husker offense just hammers 'em, and Frost was twice the QB that Griese was. Nebraskas defense would be allover him, and their secondary just too physical. Michigan spreads em out with their receivers, and gets two, maybe three scores, as Strreets is a monster, but ball control is key and Nebraska's offense does just that, AND Frost throws for two, and is an option master, andis named MVP. I'm a fan of both the Huskers and Wolves to this day,..but the more i watched both bowls by these teams that year, (and esp the way Nebraska dismantled Tennessee,) i cant see Michigan beating the juggernaut of the nineties. I have it Nebraska 35-20. Hoping the Huskers get back to prominence soon too.

      You’re completely wrong about the last play because you obviously don’t know the rules. Even ignoring the obvious OPI on the play before that should have reverted Washington State to its own 3, they had two seconds and the previous play ended inbounds. By rule you can’t snap the ball until one second has elapsed after the referee gives the ready for play signal. That takes us from 2 to 1. The play has to take time off the clock so we go from 1 to 0. If they hadn’t spiked it and had just run a play they would have had that last shot. This situation is why the NCAA subsequently wrote into the rule book that in order to have a chance at there being time left after a spike there must have been three seconds or more on the clock.
