Using a tripod never called to me.... But I'm always curious about what all the fuss is about. Your thorough and thoughtful explanations gave me all of the feel of it with none of the expense of checking it out myself. While you confirmed tripods aren't for me... you also confirmed that this channel is. I appreciate your work!
Great primer on tripods. I would say you the way you demonstrated the various positions you had them all a little too tall. If you use the rule of thumb "top of ballhead level with your nipples", you'll be able to get behind the rifle more and control recoil better especially with a heavier recoiling rifle. Your advice of 2 legs back and 1 forward is perfect, but you can also improve recoil control even more by shortening the forward leg just slightly from the back 2. As far as ballheads, I highly recommend the Really Right Stuff Anvil-30. It is incredibly stable and super quick to adjust on the fly. With a solid set of legs (I use some Amazon Innorel RT90C legs) and that ballhead, making standing shots out to 1k yards is no problem. I've found that a good tripod setup is an absolute must for hunting. So easy to get over vegetation and more versatile than bipods. Great video, keep more coming man!
My casual observation seemed like the scope camera was more stable with the tripod more at the front of the rifle. I will try your tips for setup and both positions with my 308 and check back when i have meaningful results.
I recently started using a tripod as well.. it’s great for all the reasons you have mentioned. I appreciate not having to lay down in the grass out here in West Texas with all the bugs and stickers. Also, knee high grass and brush makes for VERY poor visibility in the normal prone position with a bipod. Lastly, I tried it all splayed out in the prone position and was Shocked out how stable it is with a rear bag, much more so than with a bipod and rear bag. Who knew!!?? Great video, thanks!
THANK YOU for this awesome content! Based on your excellent demonstration and suggestion I just picked up a Sunwayfoto T3240CSL tripod, and so far it's been amazing! I also love that the Sunwayfoto will also directly mount to the Picatinny rails.
loved your 25yr video and how comfy you sat behind the tripod. made me think I wanna get a rifle U hold for my tripod, can see it will be useful at some point.
I ordered the less expensive one. In fact its in my pole barn and I am heading out to my little range to try it out for the first time. The reason I purchased it is because my left arm is not as strong as it used to be. I am hoping it will allow me to move around and shoot easier than setting up a table everywhere I want to plink from. I learned so much from your video! THANK YOU!
Nice job!👍🏼 I am a Predator Hunter and have done most of my shooting off of tripods. So many people on RUclips trying to push products or discuss how to do something and have no idea of exactly what/why or how to use a tripod effectively. You did a great job on this “basics” video. Keep up the great work
Another great video. Useful and informative. Been giving some thought to a tripod setup. Such a huge variety of ball mounts to choose from. Looking for a lever lock rather than a knob. Thanks for producing another great video.
When I got into tripod shooting I looked around for something a little more affordable than a RRS or 2VETS & found the Gunwerks Revic hunter/stabilizer carbon fiber, ball head tripod for about $500. It's a little more than the Bog but I think you can switch out to a different ball head. They have 2 models w/one being able to extend to 74"(I think)& the other only extends to 48",it is a 40mm head w/a arca head, but uses knobs as opposed to the QD handle
Great content, well presented with quality camera and editing, I would be interested in the Bog ball replacement also as my searching has not yielded any concreate results. Keep up the great work and thanks.
As always a lot of key info in your discussion and demonstrations. I've found it hard to keep my rifle stable when using a tripod with a ball head. I've always shot standing with the tripod so i will now try some other positions. Unlike prone or a bench there are many places in the setup to induce slop no matter how hard the ball head is cinched down.
Excellent Content! You don't have to spend a fortune. I got a Leofoto SK324C for $380. Very light weight at 3.5 lbs. Very similar to the carbon fiber tripod you used in this video.
I found the video. I hadn't been interested in a tripod until watching your videos. I feel like I want to wait and learn the fundamentals with bipod and bag, but then you said just do it. lol There is a current deal for the deathgrip and earpro combo. I might pick it up and just wait to upgrade the head. We will see. I think it would be awesome to sit outside on a summer day with a tripod.
Also a good tripod can be extended all the way out so the two back legs are literally behind you at ground contact very stable and hold front of gun down for shot splas
This was a great video. I have had a the Bog Deathgrip for 2 years. I just switched it to a Ball Head and that's a plus. The Bog's have been popular because most retailers carry them. That Sunwayfoto is a fantastic tripod. I believe Sunwayfoto has a similar tripod that's cheaper than $600 .
One thing you can try, (I've seen it taught both ways) is to actually put the 2 legs forward and keep the one leg back. It helps eliminate that hop you get out the front leg.
I opted for the bog field pod. It just seemed a little more secure to me and much easier to grab your rifle off the mount and go if necessary . I am however thinking of getting a death grip for targets and other recreational shooting.
Little crow Gunworks makes a ball head conversion they sell on their website local gunsmith to me here in Minnesota. Video on their RUclips page of assembly doesn’t make sense.
I just bought one! I've yet to shoot off it. Something that puzzles me is why do people make such a big deal out of leveling it when it will tilt and pan anyway? You're an awesome shooter!
Very good info in this video. I am going to switch my carbon Death Grip to a ball mount as well. And by the way, nice shooting at the 1 moa @ 1000 yd challenge 👍
I watched both sections of the video multiple times showing shooting with the mount close to the mag well versus the mount out front. It appears to me that mounting out front was more stable.
I see you often check muzzle velocities and consistencies of ammo you use. That's good and very important for long range shooting. But there's one more important thing: advertisized BCs of bullets by manufacture s! Get Labradar or similar equipment in order to check that out. Cheers!
This was excellent..I too just upgraded a BOG to an arca ball head and started shooting off it..what ball head is that you were using (sorry if I missed it in the video)? Not many people out there doing what you are doing keep it up I for one am grateful
My long gun is front heavy so the balance is at the end of fore arm so if I go half way back I can spot shot and the gun being front heavy absorbs a bunch of recoil with a 300 win mag and 7 prc
At 21:14, you’re talking about snugging up the ball head while aiming low and then tensioning as you come up to target. So at trigger pull, the existing tension your body is placing on the rifle is in the direction of muzzle rise and the ball head’s slop has been minimized in the direction of muzzle rise, which would increase the restricting nature of the ball head on muzzle rise. I guess your experience indicates the latter wins out over the former?
Good video. Looks like you covered everything. I have the original Death grip and I love it. Love it so much j put a ball head unit on it, ZeroFoxGiven.
I’ve recently started shooting off a tripod, used to shoot of bipod prone, or off shooting bags tripod is the first time I get a weird side to side float similar to the epiltical drift from freehand. What can be causing that ?
Very informant video about shooting off a tripod and great getting to see what you see when setting up for your shot. I would be in trouble with the sitting position because I can’t get into that position anymore. To fat and to many body parts that don’t move like they used to lol 😂.
That's going to be perfect in the bed of My truck infront of My recliner ok maybe a chair 🤣😂🤣 No seriously My knee's and back are ruined, i have to stand up or sit at a bench rest , i have 4 fussions in My neck, severe arthritis, and rods & screws in My low back and My knee's are shot , disabled retired old carpenter, Constant PAIN😢 , It has to be a good day to even go to the range . I saw a fold up range bench one piece seat/table i thought would be a good idea for Guy's like me that want to still enjoy the sport , most outdoor ranges have a concrete bench rest and My indoor range has a small mobile bench rest to pull into the bay . Great video Buddy NICE RIFLE'S K.A.C.#1 😁❤ get some good knee pads on
I can see how a tripod would be very useful for long range precision shooting and even in some hunting applications. I cannot see how it would be useful in a "combat" scenario as well as most hunting scenarios as its a lot of extra weight and is assuredly unwieldy. Regardless, another incredible and informative video! Thank you!
Never used a tripod. But if you flipped the tripod around 180 degrees and lined the single leg up with the target and riffle wouldn’t it be more sturdy with the recoil. Seems like that leg going directly behind it would take a lot of the recoil. Also with it clipped in towards the front of the riffle with arca adapter
Good video as always, but on your kneeling position, if you are shooting right handed, your left knee should be up. You never want to put your round elbow joint on to a hard or bony surface(knee)
Using a tripod never called to me.... But I'm always curious about what all the fuss is about. Your thorough and thoughtful explanations gave me all of the feel of it with none of the expense of checking it out myself. I use one while coyote hunting and it makes it more comfortable while sitting and waiting
This video is class. Defo fed my interest in getting a tripod. Will return to this video when/if I buy a tripod. Solid!
Solid content. I’m sure a lot of people appreciate you reviewing affordable items and giving “honest opinion’s “ too.
By far one of the best educational shooting channels around , keep up the good work . And a big thank you for your excellent video's .

Excellent instructional video sir, great job!
I came in hot ready to ask some questions! Literally answered them all throughout the video! Well done!

I have been needing a video like that. Good call on that content. Great tips on perfecting the technique.
Excellent on gun placement on tripod,, was GOLD Sir,,, Thanks

Your tripod video and the MDS tripod master class....... its almost like i need to buy a tripod. Thanks for the info.

Excellent video! Love precision rifle content
Excellent presentation! Thank you sir
As a photographer, this is a no brainer.
Great introduction to pods! 🌲🇺🇸🌲

Awesome great info. Been looking into the bog where I shoot it’s so uneven at 300+
"Intro to Long Range with Bruiser Industry" by Jim Goons life and this video are probably the most resourceful videos. A sea of knowledge.
Love my 2 Vets 40 Mike Mike tripod!! Can shoot in any situation.
I've been using my old carbon fiber bog with the death grip saddle. It works for mild use. Maybe someday I'll upgrade to an arca setup
Excellent video my friend, I have that Deathgrip however I don’t care for the one it came with, what brand of ball head is that?
Little crow Gunworks makes a ball head conversion they sell on their website local gunsmith to me here in Minnesota. Video on their RUclips page of assembly doesn’t make sense.
I would really love to know what ball head you converted the bog to. I also have a bog and have been want to change it over
Great info mate.
Thanks for sharing.
I just bought one! I've yet to shoot off it. Something that puzzles me is why do people make such a big deal out of leveling it when it will tilt and pan anyway?
You're an awesome shooter!
Appreciate your time and effort but I just can’t pull the trigger on the ccp sunwayfoto. Thanks again
Very good info in this video. I am going to switch my carbon Death Grip to a ball mount as well.
And by the way, nice shooting at the 1 moa @ 1000 yd challenge 👍
Also shoot prone on a tripod instead of a bipod. Game changer for stability
I watched both sections of the video multiple times showing shooting with the mount close to the mag well versus the mount out front. It appears to me that mounting out front was more stable.
Great video. Sure appreciate your effort.

Can you send me the link to exact ball adapter. Great videos you put out not just a promo for vendors.thanks shoot straight
Very good video. Great info. Thanks!
Crosshair looked to be moving quite a bit, of course you still hit, good skill on your part,
Nice tips, i need to try these.
Great content very well presented.
Solid info. Thanks a lot!!!
Great video! Is it possible you could post a link to the BOG Ball Head Adapter you used and/or recommend? Tks much!
This video is great! Thanks
Good video. Looks like you covered everything. I have the original Death grip and I love it. Love it so much j put a ball head unit on it, ZeroFoxGiven.
Very good review!
Very Informative
I was scrolling then i saw your big KAC sticking out the front there 😂
Great info on tripods, can you make one on bipods too?
Great content!
Man it sure looks like you are in the Palouse area. Are you at all near Moscow Idaho?
I’ve recently started shooting off a tripod, used to shoot of bipod prone, or off shooting bags tripod is the first time I get a weird side to side float similar to the epiltical drift from freehand. What can be causing that ?
You know what? I like this channel
Thank you! Glad to hear you’re enjoying the content. Lots of new content just like this in the works so hope you’ll stick around to check it out!
How practical is it to haul around as part of a dmr set up? I guess it depends on where you are.
Very informant video about shooting off a tripod and great getting to see what you see when setting up for your shot. I would be in trouble with the sitting position because I can’t get into that position anymore. To fat and to many body parts that don’t move like they used to lol 😂.
Awesome video. Which aftermarket ballhead did you mount onto your BOG tripod?
Would like to know as well
great info!!
Solid videos sir.
Well done.
nice shooting again
How did you convert the BOG from a clamp head to a ball head ??
There's a guy on the snipershide forum that offers the ball head conversion.
What head is that on top of your Bog Pod?
That's going to be perfect in the bed of My truck infront of My recliner ok maybe a chair 🤣😂🤣 No seriously My knee's and back are ruined, i have to stand up or sit at a bench rest , i have 4 fussions in My neck, severe arthritis, and rods & screws in My low back and My knee's are shot , disabled retired old carpenter, Constant PAIN😢 , It has to be a good day to even go to the range . Good video as always, but on your kneeling position, if you are shooting right handed, your left knee should be up. You never want to put your round elbow joint on to a hard or bony surface(knee)
Try both tripods on one rifle.
