"Turn It Off" - Max von Essen, Brandon Uranowitz - Easter Bonnet Competition

- At the 30th annual Easter Bonnet Competition, Max von Essen and Brandon Uranowitz from An American in Paris lamented theatre audiences’ addiction to taking photos and using their smartphones during shows with the comedic “Turn It Off, Seriously,” topped off by their award-winning bonnet.
The Easter Bonnet Competition (#BroadwayBonnets) was presented April 25 and 26, 2016 at the Minskoff Theatre, home to Disney's The Lion King. The production featured 17 extravagant, handmade bonnets presented by some of Broadway’s most popular shows. Celebrating six weeks of fundraising by 58 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies, the Easter Bonnet Competition raised a record-shattering $5,528,568 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the largest grand total from either an Easter Bonnet Competition or Gypsy of the Year fundraising campaign in Broadway Cares history.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS unites theatre artists with theatre lovers to help those in need.
The money we raise together tonight for Broadway Cares will go to more than 450 social service agencies in all 50 states to fund lifesaving medication, healthy meals and emergency financial assistance for those living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awards grants to more than 450 social service agencies in all 50 states helping those living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. It’s also the largest single financial supporter of the social service programs of The Actors Fund, helping everyone in entertainment and the performing arts.
Broadway Cares hosts two six-week-long fundraising campaigns across the country every year, one leading up to the Easter Bonnet Competition in April and the other leading up to the Gypsy of the Year competition in December. Broadway Cares also produces annual fundraising events in New York City, including Broadway Backwards, Broadway Bares and the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction.

This should be played before EVERY SINGLE SHOW IN BROADWAY, just like they do it in the movie theaters.
A theatre in Warsaw had a really passive aggressive pre-show announcement that had me cackle out loud. They politely asked to switch the phones off to avoid an embarrassment a patron from few nights ago experienced, when his phone went off. He answered and he accidentally put his ex wife ON SPEAKER, yelling at him for once again not paying alimony on time. Everyone in the theatre could hear. “It was a cautionary tale for everyone... not paying alimony on time”. Also they pointed out that being lit up with white light from below exposed all the double chins which is terribly unflattering.
Just realized these two BOTH did Falsettos and I'm shook! Love them so much :))
Bonus point the song they parodied is from The Book of mormon which Andrew Rannells played the main character in and then later he did Falsettos with Brandon

When I saw kinky boots, one of the girls in front of me was on her phone for the whole first act. It was so distracting for me as an audience member, and I can hardly imagine how horrible it must be for actors on stage. Thankfully, someone told her at the end of act one and she either left or didn't get it back out, thank gOd

Apparently the Dear Evan Hansen is awful. Ben Platt remembered once a full front row of kids on their phones. It's kind of devastating because the tickets are really difficult to get and ironic because the show is about the dangers of social media.The stage is designed to look like a freaking phone screen.

Can this be played before every performance of the Radio City Rockettes? They were the worst audience I’ve been a part of, because there multiple people taking pictures (including one behind me) and videos. It was so appalling to witness that kind of disrespect first hand. If only they'd understand that you can survive for two hours without your phone or camera, it's okay - you can use it afterward. Jeez, if only they had some class.

Patti Lupone had a point. First of all, the cameras are a distraction--not only to the performers, but also the seat-mates in the audience. After all, they paid an average of $112 (in 2017) for the ticket. They didn't pay to see people violating IPR laws. Second, the CDs, photographs, etc., are available for sale after the show, not to mention is stores everywhere and even online and on eBay. Third, part of a performer's contract includes a percentage of those visuals and recordings. Ms Lupone may have bone off the deep end of the pier a bit, but "whatever happened to our public good manners" was a question that was rightfully and rightwously posed.

@@Pugkin5405You are missing the point. In addition to the distraction, the players and musicians, as part of their remuneration, get paid a portion of the fees from CDs and souvenirs. So, filming them from your phone is STEALING from them. Not to mention showing crass behavior to your seatmates.
@@onemercilessming1342 Not really. Think about how many people go to see the shows after they see scenes or bootlegs or whatever online. More people go to see it, the show runs for longer, people get paid more. People might even decide they want to buy something for the show they might not have heard of if it wasn't for random scenes floating around online
