Rory O'Malley, Michael Reidel - Easter Bonnet Competition Opening Number - 2014

- At the 28th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition, the original opening number featured Rory O'Malley making a deal with devil, played with flair by New York Post theatre writer Michael Reidel. Reidel promised O'Malley "Broadway's greatest award" -- the coveted Easter Bonnet Competition winner's trophy -- but only if he completed an exhaustive Into the Woods-inspired scavenger hunt for unique memorabilia snatched from all of Broadway's shows. The number was directed and choreographed by Al Blackstone with music direction by Ben Cohn and lyrics by Vanessa Brown. Orchestrations by Adam Michael Kaufman.
The Easter Bonnet Competition returned to the Minskoff Theatre on April 21 and 22, with the companies of Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring productions offering skits, songs and dances, as well as elaborately designed bonnets created especially for the event.
Broadway veterans shared the stage with celebrated newcomers, as more than 200 of Broadway and Off-Broadway's most talented performers came together for this year's Easter Bonnet Competition.

By drawing upon the talents, resources, and generosity of the American theatre community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $285 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the major supporter of the social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and the Samuel J. Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts. Broadway Cares also awards annual grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.

As a person who grew up with Rory, literally my mother baby-sat him and we were considered twins as babies, and I adore Gerry like a mother of my own, this amazing! Great art, great fund raising, great work! Rory on stage is watching glorious marvel. All I can say. I love that man, not as much as husband, but I love him like a brother. Which as he will know says a lot.
