    Thank you thank you thank you. I've said it before, you guys provide more of a feeling and understanding about the places you're visiting just by showing street life and day-to-day stuff than any other vloggers who seem intent on giving information by talking the whole time. You show getting tickets for public transport, buying hot drinks from vending machines, going to 7-11, travel passes, walking around, interesting sights, and you film it and let it explain itself, and give a bit of chat when needed, so that we really get a feel for what you are doing in such a happy and, well, artistic manner it's a joy to watch. Congratulations. Melbourne Simon.

    Some Interesting facts about the Shinkansen: the more the number of cars, the faster it goes. Every car has its own power train unlike the normal trains you find elsewhere, which are usually powered by 1 or 2 locomotives. The Shinkansen N700 series has a maximum of 16 cars and top speed of 300 kmph. Also, it takes about 4 kilometers to come to a dead stop from a top speed of 300 kmph. It is equipped with earthquake detection sensors which automatically triggers emergency stop procedure in case of an earthquake along its route.

    • @OnePackWanderers
      @OnePackWanderers  2 года назад +7

      These were all very interesting facts, thank you! The engineering behind these trains is incredible.

    • @muralk3153
      @muralk3153 2 года назад +7

      @@OnePackWanderers oh yes, I forgot the most interesting fact as to why the N700 series have an elongated nose. This is to ensure stability when entering tunnels at very high speeds, but the most interesting part is how did the engineers come up with such a design for the nose. Well, it so happened someone was watching a kingfisher dive into the water, causing hardly a ripple. So they came up with a nose design modeling the beak of the kingfisher. This is the beauty of Zen, learn from what nature has to offer.

    If you’re going to the far south of Japan, I highly recommend the island of Yakushima off the south of the main islands of Japan. One of my favorite places I’ve been in the world. Thousands of year old massive cypress trees up in the mountains including possibly the oldest tree alive in the world that you hike to up an old WWII era abandoned train track. Special species of deer and monkeys up in the mountains. Moss forests that inspired some of Miyazaki’s animated forests. Tropical jungle feeling at ground level up to high temperate forests up the mountains. Amazing local onsens and seafood. And a fun ferry ride for a few hours out from Kagoshima to get there.

    My wife and I visited Hokkaido last week and decided to fly instead of taking the Shinkansen. We were only in Japan for a week and didn't want to spend 2 of those days on a train. The flight was only an hour and half and I think it was cheaper. We highly recommend renting a car because you'll see so much more of the island. We also rented a car in Tokyo and had an amazing time seeing the autumn colors around Lake Kawaguchi and Hakone. We also saw quite a bit more than usual while driving around Tokyo last Saturday. Hope you see some autumn colors on Hokkaido because we seemed to be a little late where we were. Just another reason to return another time.

    In Hokkaido(北海道), there's a fried chicken called "Zangi(ザンギ)."
    It is one size bigger than the common Japanese fried chicken called "Karaage(からあげ)" and very tasty!
    Hokkaido is also rich in seafood, so if you get a chance, try crab(カニ), salmon roe(イクラ), or sea urchin(ウニ)! It's a bit pricey though lol

    It's cheaper to take a low cost carrier and fly in half the time. Take a bullet train on a shorter and cheaper ride. Then again a bullet train is so cool and should be on one's bucket list.
    The rail pass is a bargain...maybe? We found that lots of trains are not JR...

    I am very pleased with this wonderful family reunion🌱
    Hokkaido is a treasure trove of ingredients!
    For seafood, seasonal oysters and scallops. He is more of a meat person than a fish person, I recommend Hokkaido wagyu beef or mutton barbecue called Genghis Khan.
    Miso butter ramen is also a must !
    Lloyd's for chocolate and Shiroi Koibito are the most famous chocolate confections in Japan💓
    You won't see drift ice until January, but it's already below freezing in the northern and eastern parts of Hokkaido right now.
    If you buy a light down compact vest or jacket from UNIQLO that folds up small like a raincoat, it will come in handy early in the morning and at night when it is cold. I've been using mine for 6 years and it hasn't deteriorated at all🎵
    Every woman in Japan uses Uniqlo's Heattech underwear. And we enjoy wearing clothes that are not limited to protection from the cold✨
    I have become a fan of yours and will continue to watch your wonderful travel videos even after I leave Japan.
    I'll be watching you guys with great enthusiasm for your comfortable journey in the North 🌱🌱

      Ah! The electronic message board inside the Shinkansen said that the train was delayed because something had entered the tracks. Perhaps a deer?
      It happened only twice in the past. There is no entrance or exit, so they say it's hard to get rid of it. How they get in is a mystery. Thanks for the long wait🍀

They upgraded the specs on line so it does 320km/h (restricted to that speed to be super safe b/c it has been tested at much higher speeds, but Japanese like to be precise and safe).
    I was in Hakodate this January and it was bitterly cold and windy.
    While my family spend more time with grandparents in Japan, I am back in Sydney and it’s a jump from winter Japan to summer Australia that shows that seasons can be seriously different and…. Biggest shock with coming home is how much stronger Australian sun is.

    Shinkansen runs on standard-gauge railway (1435mm). While many, but not every, of the none Shinkansen Japanese railways are on 1067mm narrow-gauge railway. This maybe why some other trains are narrower. Metros are also on standard-gauge.

    • @OnePackWanderers
      @OnePackWanderers  2 года назад

      Ah, thank you for the correction/context! Maybe the Shinkansen just felt wider due to clever packaging/seating arrangement? Or it was just my mind playing tricks on me 😂

    • @mthsu
      @mthsu 2 года назад

      @@OnePackWanderers No no 😆 What I meant was Shinkansen trains are indeed wider. You were right about it.
      The JR Hokkaido train and the Narita Airport train are both at about 2,845mm wide.
      Shinkansen trains are about 3,385 mm wide. 🚄
      Metro trains are narrower even thought it's on standard-gauge, sorry for the confusion on gauge width. There are Metro trains from 2,490mm wide to around 2,800mm wide.
      To sums it up, Shinkansen are much wider then all other Japanese trains and Metros. 😄
      Maybe look up some of the tourist train around Japan! The special sightseeing trains are beautiful. Some with special meals and have special interior. JR Kyushu have a whole range of tourist trains all look amazing.

    Really enjoying your videos. Have been watching since the first video in Japan. Can you comment on shorts? I notice you wearing shorts in a few of your videos. We are going to be there in the summer and don’t want to be disrespectful. Can you comment as a tourist perhaps on clothing that is acceptable as a tourist? I am use to running around in athletics shorts with my kids when we go on vacation. Also can you comment on the luggage issue on Shinkansen? I know you have big backpacks but they changed some of rules. Thanks again!

    Thank you for the video. Although of JR Rail Pass, did you pay extra fees for this trip to Hokkaido?

    • @OnePackWanderers
      @OnePackWanderers  2 года назад

      Thankfully, there are no reservation fees attached to the JR Pass we bought. I think the only extra fees would be if we decided to upgrade to first class, or take one of the overnight sleeper trains.

    • @OnePackWanderers
      @OnePackWanderers  2 года назад

      We have been comparing the regular cost of fares against the JR Pass, and it’s definitely worth it if you plan to use trains. For us, the cost will equal out after a week of use, and that’s for the 21 day ticket. We will probably ‘save’ $600 per person at the end.
      Have fun on your trip! Hokkaido is really cool 🙂
