- Is the $70 Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod worth it, as an overall purchase? Other than a camera and a lens, this tripod was one of the first investments I made when I started in the videography space a couple of years ago, and has generally served me well since.
I'll use this review to discuss the many features and pros of this tripod, as well as some of the drawbacks and cons you might experience compared to other tripod models. Finally, I'll give my general take on the tripod overall, and whether I'd recommend it.
Certainly if you're in the market for a budget tripod that can handle smaller smartphone cameras like an iPhone, point-and-shoot cameras like the Sony ZV-1, smaller APS-C cameras like the Sony a6000 series (e.g. a6100, a6400, a6600) or the Canon M50, this tripod is a solid choice for those cameras and an excellent choice in general for traveling, quick on-the-go shooting, etc. I still use mine today with my Sony a7 III and a7S III in select circumstances, and you may be able to do the same with your DSLR or mirrorless camera, so long as you bear in mind the tripod's weight limit and head design.

I've been using this with my lumix Fz80, love it.
It's a great all-around tripod for smaller cameras like that, for sure.
Appreciate the review! Influenced our purchasing decision.
Thanks, glad to hear it helped!
Used this for a little over 18 months on my 1st. Channel
Had to replace as the slide lock has jammed up on various occasions.
Now it is permanently locked and can’t replace the head .
Wouldn’t recommend for video just fixed shots
Agreed, it's definitely not a tripod geared towards professional/long-term video use (e.g. pans, tilts, adapting different heads). For a lightweight camera on a locked off shot though, it can be sufficient.
Just bought this this morning for 50 gbp(uk)
Very impressed
Congrats on the purchase! It's a solid small/portable tripod, for sure.
@@andrewsaraceni just gotta figure my camera out now
Strugling to get to terms with apeture and iso shuttespeed ect.and dont know if if ican save customised settings to each settings of the dial...its a kodak z421.i dont wanna be having to ajust each setting on the fly or i miss a good shot
@@robanderson1155 Can't say that I'm familiar with that camera, but I'd have to assume there's a full auto mode you could use, or similarly an aperture or shutter priority mode that would take care of a lot of that for you.
Hello, I was looking for Manfroto brand tripods and when I saw this tripod, I recognized it, because I have it. The only thing I didn't know was that it could be flipped vertically. But it is a great tripod. Now I bought one from another brand, which is made of plastic, very ordinary. I think I'm going to return it and wait until I have more money to buy another good aluminum tripod. Now I feel like they are making them out of plastic, so they won't last anymore.
Yeah it's possible they changed them when they brought the model over to the Joby brand. Fortunately, still plenty of great tripods from Manfrotto and others out there (I've reviewed a bunch on my channel).
@@andrewsaraceni Thank you very much !
Great video. First one I clicked and don't need to do further research
Thanks! Happy to hear it helped you.
Recently got one, not the best to be honest, the head is questionable and the quick release plate,(small disc), doesn't tighten up enough, still it's compact and fit's in my back pack ok plus I only use it with a go pro.
Yeah it's definitely not fit to handle bigger camera rigs, but for simple setups, it's a valid option in the compact tripod space.
Hello I think I lost the stew part can I get it or other option
I'd reach out to Manfrotto/Joby support - they still make the tripod, just under the Joby name now.
Hi. I'm interested in this tripod, but one thing I haven't been able to find out is the leg base dimensions when not exteneded at all. Are you able to tell me the dimension when standing on unexteneded legs ?
I'm looking for something that I can used on a windowsill. This looks too big for that, but maybe I could use a base or shelf of some kind if the overhang is not too big.
Is the leg angle lockable, as that could give me a smaller base ?
It's about 17" tall with the legs unextended. and 12" leg to leg at the base all around at that height. The leg angle isn't lockable, but it does stay in place well when not fully extended.
Thanks for quick reply. I was wondering if I use string to restrict how far they open, I think I could have them 8" leg to leg, would it still be stable in that instance ?
I just have a basic camera, no lens attachments so it won't have a great weight to deal with.
@@michaelbutton1789 No problem, that could work, but it would honestly be pretty stable even without that. I've used the legs in a not fully spread configuration and without any major disturbance (e.g. wind), it's held up fine.
Have you compared this to the Joby action
Haven't gotten to yet, but it looks to be almost the same model, just a new version/successor to this.
can we remove the head and replace it with a different ballhead?
No unfortunately, or not without taking it apart/a DIY project. The head is permanently affixed to the center post, so it can't be easily removed or changed.
I own it. I kinda hate it.
Any particular reason why? If it's what I mentioned in the video (lack of fluid head, weight limit), I could see that being a disappointment.
Hi just saw this video. I have this tripod and i'm looking for an l-bracket for the purpose of doing vertical shots but i'm failing to see how and l-bracket can actually be attached to this tripod. Do you have any advice on this?
You actually shouldn't need an L-bracket with this tripod. If you switch it into the photo mode, the head can rotate at 90 degrees to do vertical shots (I show this around the 1 minute mark). If you did get one though, it would have to screw into the small quick release plate it comes with.
