We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RUclips, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light."

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has a bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Aaliyah thank you for your Fantastic Reaction video! Very on point analysis and commentary! SoHyang is a master at mixed Voice, Belts,breathy tones , breath control,pitch musicality and flexibility! Follow your Dream where ever that takes you an never give up on that Dream! That leads me to recommend a SoHyang penned Song, “Dream”.
By the way, her nickname amongst Family and close Friends is,”Dreamer.” A difficult song as most of hers are! After that maybe some performances in English! You’ll note after a few Performance that she never cheats or mails in a Performance, giving her all to the point of exhaustion! Not bad considering she hard Pneumonia at least 8 times in a period of 3 1/2 years starting sometime in 2014. Brought on because of a comprised immune system after Cancer at 20 and later contracting Hepatitis!
Her Health is part of the reason she has turned away the three biggest Record Companies in the world and Most of the Korean and Asian Producers as well! Though th major reason is she has a Gospel Ministry which is very important to her along with some Charity Work! For years she thought she wanted the Fame and even Fortune but after many battles in her basement, alone with God. Asking why he was putting obstacles in her way she became aware that God knew Best! The Industry may have destroyed her! You see in her earnest smile she is at peace and Happy with her relationship with Jesus! Even her Husband and Family which she loves so much come after her Love of God/ Jesus / Holy Spirit! She has never really tried Opera or Country Music but can sing any of the other Genre’, Act and is a very successful Fantasy Novelist, Faith and Family writer as well as song writing! Here is Dream and it has English captions if you turn them on! Make sure on her Performances you use a Copyright veil or freeze frames maybe even just a picture of her and her voice! Korean Broadcasting is very strict with blocks and strikes!

Thanks for your great reaction. I appreciate your explanation of the singer and song doing your homework before you do the reaction. I just wanted to add a little bit to your description of Arirang. The folk song, "Arirang" is in "Arirang Alone" where people were singing along with Sohyang and your description is correct. However, "Arirang Alone" is a modern song using Arirang theme. Alone part, I guess is indicating Dokdo, a small island that is located the most East part of Korea. The name itself is Island Alone. The singer who wrote the song wishing of the unification of Korea. So he mentions Baekdoo Mt, the highest mountain of the Korean peninsula which borders China and North Korea and Halla Mt. the most southern part of Korea in Jeju Island, the second highest mountain in the Korean peninsula, which covers the whole Korea. The lyrics is talking about our hearts flowing from those two mountains will flow and flow and meet. Perhaps the writer was thinking that they were meeting at Dokdo even though the lyrics doesn't say it explicitly. Thus, the Arirang of Korean people's sadness will flow and meet at this lonely island and increase the meaning of this lonely island that Japanese falsely claim it theirs despite their own documents recognizing it as Korean. The writer beautifully wrote the song that wishing for the unification of Korea and includes the best mountains of Korea and Dokdo, the geography of Korea. It is a brilliant song for what it means. On top of this, Sohyang arranged it amazingly beautiful to describe the difference of the North and South with dissonant violin sounds getting worse and louder, and then unifies it as one and harmonize the violins and her voice beautifully that is not a part of the original song. Sohyang has a habit of making a masterpiece into another level masterpiece. I believe Sohyang's message in this song is more than the unification of Korea, but people going through troubles, if those people can hold hands in hands, then not lonely and can together overcome the scars. My only trouble with Sohyang is, even though I love her, she purposely don't sing the part, "East Sea," and just hums the part. It is the opposite of the song writer's intention because like Dokdo, Japanese don't like "East Sea," and calls it Sea of Japan as many world map indicates it. Nowadays, many maps indicates it both East Sea and Sea of Japan, but Japanese don't like it. Now because of Jin of BTS called it East Sea and many young people will know it by East Sea and many Japanese people hated the song. So it just puzzles me why Sohyang doesn't sing that part, not only in this performance, which I initially thought she forgot the lyrics, but having heard many times and other performances of this song, she never mentions it. It is a mystery, but this is a beautiful rendition of Arirang Alone. Sorry for a long explanation, but hopefully it gives more meaning to this beautiful song.

I believe Sohyang didn't mention East Sea to avoid getting into any kind of international controversy. Her rendition was used by a pair of skaters in the Olympics, right? The words may have caused a firestorm, and take away from all the goodwill of the games.

I could listen to the magnificent SOHYANG 24/7, I couldn't listen to Dimash for more than 24 seconds, SOHYANG is the master of overdoing songs without overdoing it, this is what separates her from the rest 🇬🇧🔥👌❤️.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard".

A teenage girl said, 'I know what kind of song Arirang is in Korea. It's amazing that I know the song that is similar to the song of the country, Arirang.'
Some people say that Arirang sounds like a Disney song, and if you know what background Arirang comes from, you would say it's the opposite of Disney song.
It's in the title and lyrics, but "I'm just waiting alone."
Most Arirang in Korea is like that.
You lose your country, you abandon your hometown, you leave your lover,
To a colder and more barren place, the song that parents, children, husbands, who said they were coming back, sang because they didn't come back. It was all Arirang.
There are so many Arirangs in every part of Korea, and one of them is sung by Sohyang, who says that his voice is clean and sounds like a Disney song. "Oh, that's how it sounds." I still remember being shocked.
The review was absurd. But it wasn't a bad intention, so I personally felt very bitter.
They may think it was the best compliment, but Arirang in Korea is definitely not Disney's movie-like image.
I couldn't get rid of my sadness, anger, and frustration, so I sang. I called it Arirang.
However, no one in Korea can explain the word Arirang in an exact meaning and meaning.
