    When I use to manage hotels', there were numerous times I had to fire people who passed these personality test with perfect high flying colors, had clean backgrounds and perfect references because they were caught stealing, skipped work and a lot of other issues. Finally, I told the corporate office to stop giving these test out and to let me do my own hiring. I ended up hiring a non-violent first-time offender convicted felon and years later when I left the hotel...... he took over and managed the hotel because he was the best employee the company ever had!

      hiring manager on reddit told me he'd rather someone lie then be honest if they don't know how to answer a question. It was a leadership question for an entry level position, something I had no experience in. I related teamwork exp instead....Still not good enough for them.

    No personality test can predict accurately how an applicant will do on the job. I am wary of these tests because I think they are rigged to favor certain personality types, so "beating them" may be a no-win situation. Plus, I hear from this video that they are basically fear based. Fear never makes for good decision making. However, I can use the appearance of certain kinds of questions to form a foggy profile of the kind of employee they are looking for. More questions in the interview to the company would either confirm or deny the conclusions, thus helping the applicant to decide either to keep or drop that company from the target list.

    I think these tests are dehumanizing. Also , why does Walmart , Target , and other big companies still have a high turnover rate? It is because they treat people like a robot right from the beginning with these obtuse tests. All these tests are for is to see weather or not you can think for yourself. They do not want that in the workplace. They do not want someone smart. I am so glad I am self employed.

      @@unscripted483 So true. Personality tests are dehumanizing even to the people who do well on them. The real contributing factors are that the tests discourage honesty, and restrict the way in which respondants describe themselves to 4-5 prefabricated options. One of the main features of self-assessment tests is to amplify the Dunning-Kruger effect.

    These tests DO NOT help the companies who use them to find the best candidate for the job. I've seen people who were hired instead of me... (a certain grocery market that I shop at) and the individuals who were hired are NOT competent or knowledgeable. I am so sick of these stupid personality tests I don't bother with companies once I find out that they use them.

    I passed all interview stages and was told I was the best candidate. I had a psych test and watched this video to prepare. I "failed" the test and did not get the job after a month of prep and waiting. Their feedback reasoning was nothing like me.

    I really loved the tip about asking the employer to reveal WHAT the test is actually measuring for and if it would stay on your file in the future - I had never even thought to ask this!     Yes, these tests are extremely stressful and I don't believe are truly accurate to a person's personality or if they're a good candidate for the job!

      Yup, I'm an ambivert (have qualities of both extrovert and introvert) so get stuck on questions regarding how outgoing I am. Also, I am likely 50/50 when it comes to logic and emotion. I'm compassionate but don't like when people steal/ loot or take credit for sale of another person so I would fire someone who even took a $1.00 out of the cash register but would not fire someone who took something from the trash. A friend of mine got fired for that. Someone tossed a briefcase on top of the trash with intent to get rid of it, not a careless mistake and my friend was on break and took it and put it in his locker then got fired for it. Now if it was a known policy the company had, then fine, but they never had an employee handbook nor mentioned it in meetings that this was unacceptable. They also should have justified why this behavior was wrong in their eyes. If their point was logical, then fine, give him a warning or suspend him. He was the breadwinner in his family, his wife had cancer and he was an older person...I know he would not have done it if he knew it was against store policy. Now I would have no problem firing person stealing food even if hungry and homeless because there are so many options. They have public help for them, there are plenty of fruit trees and churches etc...and obviously this person wasn't homeless their entire life, they probably got kicked out of their home by family and friends who got tired of his irresponsibility and likely substance abuse or mental health issues which again, there is help for people like that too. There is no assistance for people who are responsible and middle class.

    The questions on these personality tests are so ambiguous. If you're a person that thinks Beyond the actual words and looks for the meaning the question can be interpreted in a number of ways.

    I've come to the conclusion that I will never pass any of these tests........lol therefore if a company requests it prior to meeting me then I don't want to work for them. That tells me a lot about their company culture.

    Literally just got told at my first ever interview for a retail job that I was a “blue” personality and a “major risk” to hire because of my personality. Super annoying.

      It happens to me too. For some of us, getting hired, is a matter of "passing" as something we are not. We act too "blue" when employers think we should be "yellow" or whatever. I wish that employers only expected applicants to be their best selves, but they require us to pass the secret handshake test too.
      I am guessing you believe it is important to be honest, but these tests discourage honesty even though most of them, ironically, say to "be honest" in the directions. My advice is to make educated guesses about what kind of applicant they want, and go with those answers (easier said than done). You do not owe honest answers to a multiple choice test that was designed to count you out. It is nonsense like these personality tests that keep the Dunning-Kruger effect alive and well.

    Thx J.T. I've taken the cognitive and the personality tests a few times throughout my career and while I liked your tip about asking questions prior to taking these tests, in my experience, I've never been able to get anyone to agree to share the results afterwards nor would anyone tell me whether or not it would be in my file. Consequently, I agreed to take the tests, fearing I would be eliminated from further consideration if I objected but I must admit, I never like it when they won't do either. Great tips throughout...keep working it daily :)

    I HATE HATE HATE these accursed personality tests! I have count of the times I have been knocked back by these things, after spending nearly A WHOLE hour wading through pages and pages of ridiculous behavioral scenarios/questions. Are these employers in their right minds when they decide to use these useless, incessantly frustrating tests to sift out job applicants? Obviously not. Let us get back to PROPER, SENSIBLE methods of recruiting, and SCRAP THESE BLOODY STUPID PERSONALITY TESTS NOW!!!!!!!!

      Apparently they are not in their right minds, because what I've witnessed often times are/is the complete idiots that can't think for themselves. AND that is exactly what they (employers) of the large chain stores want.

      My theory is it lets them outsource HR to an automated process. Personality tests are just a way to throw out the majority of applicants so they don't have to pay someone in hiring to do that work. Sure, it overlooks good applicants, and reduces the concept of qualifications to a multiple choice test, but they're too big to fail, so their only interest is in finding warm bodies that do not possess that alarming propensity for independant thought.

    Sad Fact:
    You are to lie on personality test if you want to get the job.
    Example question
    1. I know someone who has stolen something.
    The honest answer is True.
    But the right answer is False.
    The reason why is because this question is secretly asking you if you associate yourself with thiefs.
    Therefore in order to pass a personality assessment test, you must lie.
    Because face it. Everyone knows someone who has stolen something.
    These test are un-ethical and in no way help a company pick the right person for a job.
    Unfortunately I had to learn this the hard way through many failed attempts on these types of test.
    Videos like this didn't help either.
    If you really want to help people then stop making videos like this telling people to just be honest.
    I'm thinking about making my own video just to give people a fighting chance. It's not fair!!!! Lol

      That's exactly true. If you're going to be honest on those application tests, you won't be working anytime soon. I used to be honest on the test in the beginning, and got no call backs. When I started giving answers they want me to say, the phone rang with employers. So if you want to work badly enough, answer those questions based on what they want to hear, not what you really think or feel. Those tests are an example that honesty isn't the best policy.

      Knowing of people who commited a crime is different from hanging out with those who do. I knew 2 people who got fired for stealing. They made it obvious when caught coz they were given the "walk of shame" lol. Everybody else gossiped about it in the lunch room not when no customers were around...some saw the LP walk them out in handcuffs and those who missed the sight were told about it. It was shocking to us coz we thought they were nice people and had worked there for years.

      If you ask me, I'd rather work in a lower-paying small company with real room for human-human building interaction rather than high-wage giant companies that see its employers as mere numbers and scores on performance sheets. Do you agree?

      Yep, and guilt by association. None of my relatives nor friends are theives but I worked at stores in which people stole sales from me, one was an assistant manager and also worked at a place in which they caught a coworker and took them out in handcuffs...do can I u know someone? Lol. What about answering yes to " nowadays, marijuana is like beer." A person may be upset about it and think this way as well as a person who thinks it IS acceptable. This comment doesn't indicate one's opinion but just one's perspective. I also have questions asking I made at X company if I was making base plus commission...am I supposed to just mention hourly rate or the combined average? I once worked bc at a place that paid minium wage but it was one of the highest paying jobs. And what if you modeled and were paid 300.0O for 15 minutes of actual work on camera? Do u include time in make up and wardrobe? They may assume u were a call girl or a gigolo otherwise!! Lol.

    FYI I refuse to take a personality test and still got the job. I told the in potential employer that the test would violate my right to privacy under federal law for medical I also told them I was concerned about where these test results would be stored and if they could be breached

    It costs a company 120% to 130% of your salary to hire you. Hearing that, I suspect that recruiters/hiring managers and the processes they've created have created a significant drain on the organization.

      When I try to match that to my experience, I remember about how I spent about 100 hours interviewing to find just 1 person what is itself about 100% of the wage plus add hr's time and security checks. So I was about to say it's not unreasonably high.
      But then again, I remembered how angry I was about having to organize the whole process myself while hrs were not doing a thing so 130-150% is probably about as ineffective as one can be

    Thanks for posting. I’ve actually never taken personality based interviews test. But I learned know my personality is very important especially to identify my strength and weaknesses.

    So my problem with these tests is that I find many of the questions to be confusing. As an example, I’ve seen questions like this: “Any trouble you have is your own fault”. Is that question trying to measure how responsible of a person I am? Or how compassionate I am towards other people? Because the answer is the opposite depending on what I think the question is asking. And I could see it going either way in a call center job. Is this question trying to suss out if I’ll be full of excuses for things like tardiness, or is it trying to suss out if I’ll be patient with customers? Here’s another example question: “I rarely worry about how well I’m doing at my job”. I always answered “strongly disagree” because I felt like anyone who doesn’t worry about their job performance is arrogant. But I’ve recently read that the question is actually trying to assess how well a candidate copes with stress, and that I should answer “Strongly disagree”. That was not at all clear to me, hence the problems I have with these tests. And I don’t think I’m the only one. I really don’t think most of us are trying to be dishonest, but rather we’re trying to understand what the questions are even asking. Some of these questions are really confusing!!

    I learned 2 things. 1, I wasn't aware that some companies use personality tests in place of references. 2. Understanding that I need to make sure that I think about the particular position & company when answering. I often struggle because at times there might be multiple answers that match my personality based on various situations. Thanks for the tips.

    I always do my research about a company and if possible the interviewer and have known that employers used the tests to weed out many candidates. However, 90% of the time they were given before ever getting an official interview. I actually never thought to ask for the results of the test and how the results affected my opportunity to move forward in the interview process. I never wanted to seem too pushy.

    For my experience with the Target and CVS personality tests is that it asks you these questions before you start any of the interviews. I had no chance to ask them if I could see the results or get more information about how they are used. I would prefer if they used my references instead of a personality quiz which might bias certain personalities depending on how it is written. I have had no luck with jobs and there is no feedback at these beginning stages so I don't know what I am doing wrong. I'm losing time before I become completely homeless and even my connection to target didn't help me land an interview and I never learned what I did wrong.

    I'm just starting to apply for jobs for the first time, and I wasn't aware how widely use these tests were. It's good to know that there's no wrong answer for the behavioral testing, so I think answering honestly is actually easy to do.

    Being from the HR industry and then moving to Business Analyst role has been a long journey. Along the way sometimes you forget what you did as well as what did you learn back in school. This was a great shot video which refreshed my memory.But the most important takeaways for me was "Be authentic." and "Preparation is the key to success when it comes to beating these tests." :)

    I haven't come across personality tests in previous interviews, but I have an interview next Tuesday (legal assistant) and have been looking for work since last November, so I am watching all of J.T.'s videos religiously. The three questions to ask an employer were helpful on this video -- knowledge is power.

    I apparently "failed" a test similiar to this called the "Divine Assessment" after succeeding past several interviews prior. It was unbelievable.

    I think "Asking the great questions" is the key for most of success since it 's allow you to understand the employer as well as to build a relationships with interviewers. And I think understanding their objective is great insights that will allow us to understand if we are best fit with that job or not. Also help us to identify the strategy to win over the interview as well.

    Some companies do Assessment tests online before you can submit your application. So you may or may not get your application or resume looked at by the hiring manager. To me, it doesn't seem fair to waist all that time and don't have an actual human look at your resume. I got a rejection letter two seconds after I completed an application and test. This was on the weekend after 11pm on a Saturday. I was determined to get my resume to the manager so I went to the location myself to find out. The store manger informed me if you pass the assessment test your application will be in the system. I took the intuitive and gave him my resume. I took a risk, but I hope it works.

    I’m well qualified for the job and I know I can do it because the job I tried to apply is something I’m doing for the past 3 years at another company. The test disqualify me.

    Very helpful. I agree with you that being as truthful and authentic as possible about yourself is important. You might end up getting the job, but it could be a bad match.

    Thanks for sharing :) Two key takeaways for me - 1) ask for the test results 2) be honest! Even if you fail, maybe the test results are telling you, this job role is not going to be fulfilling for you and the job description led you to believe it will!

    Thanks for this video. I had learned most of this in a book titled WHAT COLOR IS MY PARACHUTE. Something I did about cold calling when I wasn’t to thrilled about that idea. I made myself discover a greater ‘why’ to drive me to be the best cold caller and it about worked. Point is couldn’t we step up to a challenge and at least do our part by researching the company and or job/career and if possible shift into that and grow outside of our so called personality? I have done this several times and has worked nearly every time by focusing on my WHY! Again thanks for these tips. You do have a new sub.     I wonder if it would discriminate against people with language processing issues like high functioning Autism. They may over or under interpret an important question and get flagged as a bad candidate. That makes me question how objective it is. Looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen if you ask me.

      It is illegal to discriminate against someone with a disability who's disability would not interfere with the job like if you need glasses and your applying for a job at Target it would be legal to discriminate against disabilities that would hurt work preformence such as a crippled man working as a piano mover. I'm not a lawyer and this is not the best place to get legal advice that is just my understanding.

      I tend to overthink. I know people steal coz why else do they need to enforce the law or have jails? These tests suck pretty often coz they were written by people who aren't critical thinkers.

      I'm high functioning as well. Some questions do go over my head or I tend to over analyse it it. I've been training myself vigorously not to be that way, but it's harder for people like me to seek employment.

      People with autism can't work period. The sad thing is they can do the job that they are applying to but are usually poor at interviews and well how you interview is much more important than if you can do the job.

    It needs more examples ...I’m an over thinker and see answers from the one taking a test and managerial perspective....like for an example: one sees a problem at work, but it’s not your place to get it done because you haven’t been officially trained in that area yet. Do you bring it to the supervisor attention or do you take the initiative and do it yourself? From a managerial perspective I think it shows great assertiveness to go get it done, so I can see where that would be the answer, but I can also see the potential for it to be a bad decision as well and one should play it safe...so, which should it be?

      Exactly. It's rarely as simple as they would seem to think. Even for the questions mentioned in the video, do you find it exciting to meet new people, or do you prefer to be left to work completely alone? Well, for me it's both. Nothing's that simple.

    I have to remind myself before any interview is that they will be using some sort of personality tests to make you I am the best fit for the role. I heavily research the company and teams on any available resource online (I love Glassdoor) to make I would want to work for this company.     Just lost a job because I took a test like this. All my in person in interviews went amazing, I never lied about anything. The manager was already planning on setting up the last interview but said just take this test, I answered it truthfully and didn’t make the cut.
    Now I’m just goin to lie, gotta do what you gotta do sometimes... Nevertheless, they lost a really good candidate

      This also happened to me. Got a good word in with a friend who worked there. Met the managers, the people who would be training me, and so on, they loved my enthusiasm and readiness, they wanted me to work there with them. Then I filled out the assessment test honestly. That manager tried to call the hirer ups and everything but because the system rejected me I wasn't fit for the job even though the humans who interacted with me felt that I was.
      Be honest, I failed.
      Lied, I failed.
      Middle it, I failed.
      They need to get rid of those tests if they want workers.

    I have taken many of these tests over the years, and I am encouraged that they are fairly consistent in their conclusions and results. There are some variations, but the feedback they give can really be helpful and insightful, and deserves serious consideration, as you pointed out, before you go into the interview situation.     Hi. I always ask to use the bathroom before the interview coz if it's a mess, then the morale there sucks and they aren't hiring quality people. Worse yet, they will want u to clean it when you get hired

    Now they are calling them surveys to take. These surveys are just a part 1 and a part 2. Part 1- just words to click on how you see you. Example - "persuasive", " communicative", "sensitive'. Part 2- What words describe how you feel the company wants you to be. Same examples. Either it is a "click on the word for part 1 and part 2. Or a measure 1 to 5 on where you are with this word.

    I recently took a personality test and was stumped! I had to choose the statement I most agreed with. Sounds easy enough. The options were so different from on another. The statements would be 1) I keep a messy desk at work or 2) I don't speak up at work because I have low self esteem. I don't see the correlation between those two statements. What is being measured by that question? Any advise?

      1. I'm hard on myself
      2. I'm very forgiving
      3. I look for the best in others
      All three can be both pros and cons

    It's funny -- different videos about teaching you how to "beat" the personality test tell you to do different things. Some say to always answer the questions with "strongly disagree" or "strongly agree" because they say that being neutral is like being wishy-washy and those doing the hiring want people that appear to be confident. You say don't be so strong or have such strong opinions, so to speak, which is opposite of what others say. So essentially, it's a crap shoot! I guess everyone should just do their best and cross their fingers.

      I think the truth is to be consistent - either answer all "agree" or all "strongly agree" but no mixing it up. That's what got me into Caribou Coffee years ago. I had worked there previously, quit to serve in Americorps, and when I applied to get the job back, they made me take a survey! Ridiculous!

      Just answer Honestly and consistently. The tests aren't meant to trip you up, they're meant to use statistics to evaluate multiple specific attributes from multiple different perspectives. Really the best way to "beat" the test is to see the types and format of the questions to determine what they are asking, how they are asking it, WHY they are asking it. I don't like taking them either, however, many charitable organizations (not just evil corporations) use them too.
      No-one is perfect. When people get hired by companies that use these tests and those people fail in the role, there will be one of two reasons why the individual failed to live up to expectations excusing unforeseen circumstances: first and foremost is that the hiring manager did not do a thorough job of vetting the employee potentially relying on too much on the test score. Second would be that the failed employee lied or faked thier responses on the test - it's my opinion that there's not really the opportunity to "lie" on a personality test because you're performing self assement, and as such you're a completely biased observer, who in this instance has ridiculously poor judgement and a lack of self awareness that they give inaccurrate answers.
      I've taken a number of these at different times over the years ASVAB, MyersBriggs, DISC, Caliper, and others that I forget. They're just tests. If tests make you nervous, go take practice tests for everything until you are comfortable with them.

      @@IanConnelnot making excuses for the company, and assuming they are retail , and without knowing what test, those tests are OFTEN put in place to meet EOE laws because functionally they are color-race-sex-itlity-age blind and generally warranted to be objective evaluations. You're likely an exception, but the employment gene pool is more of a cesspool these days. Turnover is very high in unskilled labor (that at which a blank employee can be 75% independently functional in 90 days or less, and the rest is infrequent or complicated tasks). Dish washing is an example of unskilled labor. we've gotten people who get mad and quit when we ask them to stop looking at thier phone and do some task that is part of thier job. We've had people who don;t show up, spend half their day in the bathroom, get in accidents with delivery vehicles while high, then refuse the drug/alcohol test - the insurance companies require that for liability purposes - despite being included in the employment contract they signed: then they wonder why they can't get a job - that's a lack of responsibility/maturity whose precursors can be identified in these tests. (drivers also have to be 21YO). Ironically, we DON'T use these screening tests.
      secondly - they are trying to weed out potential thieves. In retail, crap employees frequently steal products and the dumb ones try to steal cash. There gazillions of people who've done really asinine and crooked things that are subsequently astonished when they get caught and fired. There's also the class of people who don't get caught but rather, stuff stops going missing when they leave.
      Preface, I'm not suggesting anything about you in the following statement.
      Ironically, I always do OK on the tests, accept constructive criticism, don't steal or cheat, and abide by my contracts among other things. Nowadays that means there's something wrong with me. Oh teah, I also don;t use all CAPS unless i mean it. LOL.

My favourate part was tip#2 Be honest, coz i believe there is something for everyone and u cant rush the process with lies! honesty is the way to get there.

    I learned that these tests are useful to both the company and myself, I can use the results (if shared with me) to improve my interview skills. As I already know to be honest I have been just as guilty of answering with the “popular answer” instead of saying how I feel which says I wasn’t being true to them or with myself. I have learned to ask questions regarding tests, the outcome and potential future situations if they are in my permanent file. Mostly, I learned the reasoning for these tests and how they help the employer but they also help me decide if this is a proper fit for me as well because as I research the company I am also researching myself whether the position calls to me or says “this isn’t the position or company for me”.

    What sucks is that these companies make little tests and people fail. And it don't justify the fact that that person who fail are usually the 1 to bust their butts for that company. I've seen this, and how most of the people they go for looks are mostly the ones who slack off so much that its beyond disturbing.

    The one thing I found enlightening was to apply the focus on the specific job, I was always answering relative to my life in general. Another thing is I've taken these online through application processes without ever talking to or corresponding with, a live person...... and never getting results or feedback. Just never getting the job.

    What I don't like is that multiple ansewers could be correct so you just have to pick one. Or all the ansewers could be false but they make you pick one. They should let you pick all of the above or none of the above. Or how about I don't know for ansewer.

    I would love to see a video where you act as the interviewer AND the interviewee. Just to get an idea of the flow of a typical interview.
