Its really fun to take a walk around St. George campus, lots of interesting architecture and tons of street life. McMaster University in Hamilton is another interesting one to check out too, albeit much smaller.
Why is the bike lane issue portrayed as though people who support the removal of the bike lanes on Bloor, Yonge and University are opposed to all bike lanes? That is not the case. I am fine with bike lanes but they do not need to be on every street. I am more familiar with bike lane issues on Bloor east of Yonge. You exit the DVP and try to drive west along bloor and it can take what seems like an eternity just to reach Yonge.. As far as I know there are bike lanes on Wellsley street just south of bloor (maybe a 15 second ride from bloor) which can be used by cyclists. I have yet to see a single bicycle traffic jam in my life so I'm quite sure that the bike traffic could manage on just one of the two streets. Toronto drivers are not good (as pointed out in the video with the van in the bike lane) but I would offer this observation: If aliens were to watch the people of Toronto getting around for an afternoon the following would be the result: 1) They would have a very good understanding of the rules of driving because most drivers, as poor as they are, still follow the rules of the road. 2) For pedestrians they would also have a reasonable understanding of the rules with regards to walking the streets of toronto. 3) As for cyclists they would have no idea as the what is required of cyclists. They would come away believing that cyclists can ride on the road, on the bike paths, on the sidewalk, going any direction at any time and that red lights don't seem to apply to cyclists and that stop signs definitely do not apply to cyclists. If drivers were to drive like cyclists ride then the streets would look like something out of GTA5. It is interesting that you pointed out the driver that didn't stop behind the line but did not say anything about the cyclist at the 38:00 point of the video riding 1) On the side walk, 2) going the wrong direction for that side of the street, 3) Crossing against a red light and 4) not seeming to have any lights or reflectors on his bike. Or the other cyclist at the same point traveling north on the wrong side of the road (possible on the sidewalk). I often ask people how do you make your typical douche Torontonian a bigger douche? You give them a bike. Cyclists are Chows chosen people not Gods chosen people. I can offer a suggestion to improve traffic and make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers (at least for some intersections). Take Bloor and Yonge. 1) Make Bloor and Yonge 2 lanes for cars again (in the works). 2) Make it a scramble intersection (done) 3) Make it so that cyclists (dismounting first) and pedestrians can ONLY cross during the scramble walk signal. What this does is completely separate bikes and pedestrians from automobile traffic. Traffic will now be able to turn right without worrying about pedestrians or cyclists. So much more traffic will flow though the intersection by doing this. Why this hasn't been done already escapes me. The same could be done at Yonge and Dundas, Younge and Eglinton (I think the scramble intersection of coming there as well....but first the bike lanes would have to be removed) and I think this could also work at Yonge and Sheppard.
How about this instead? Make the inner city sections of Bloor and Yonge completely car free, thereby making it safer, less polluted and vastly more pleasant for the majority of the people that actually use these streets on a day to day basis. Problem solved.
