To any fellow Torontonians who read this today on November 29, 2024: There's going to be a bike protest today called Critical Mass at High Park's Bloor St. end at 6pm. Cyclists will mobilize at approximately 6:30pm once everyone is gathered.
This is a great video Johnny, you nailed it! It was nice seeing you again tonight at Critical Mass. Thanks for coming out and bringing along your viewers!
Thanks for talking about this Johnny! As a fellow Torontonian this will impact me big time as well. Hopefully the opposition will get so big that Doug Ford eventually backs down (this has been proven to work multiple times as we saw from this government)
Keep the pressure on for provincial and municipal politicians!!! I've personally heard from Bonnie Crombie and my MPP Doly Begum that they plan on fighting this.
Thank you for using your platform to bring focus to this. Bill 212 passing was terrible news and I hope the provincial government has some humility to acknowledge they made a mistake.
Solidarity and respect from Los Angeles. Fellow cyclist and urbanist here. We had a similar struggle in the Culver City Council's decision to remove bike lanes from downtown Culver (a city within LA County).
Very clearly and effectively stated, Johnny. Speaking of pedestrian safety, the home owners in our neighbourhood (Bloor West/Royal York-Islington area) are vehemently opposed to sidewalks on side streets. That position speaks volumes to me.
Another problem is that most cars on the road have only one occupant, which contributes to road congestion. The premier is abusing his power by overstepping city authorities.
Thank you, Johnny. I used the Bloor bike lane nearly daily for the three years I spent in Toronto. Toronto's bike lane infrastructure is, in my opinion, one of the best characteristics of the city. I'd even say it's one of the best in the world, when considering the expansive downtown routes. I remember I took a tumble along Bloor one day, and was grateful for the bike lane ensuring I didn't have major injuries. The next week, I read about the death of a cyclist very close to that spot, near Avenue Rd. It hurts to see how the Ontario govt is deliberately neglecting the well-being of all Torontonians, not just cyclists. Ford can go suck one.
They're not just neglecting the well-being of Torontonians, they're throwing them needlessly into harms way! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed Toronto!
Cyclists could start rolling protests, where a group of cyclists takes up the entire lane to prove the point. And make it clear they will keep doing it for years, until the cycling infrastructure is put back in.
is impossible that he doesnt know the implications of the bill. Countless businesses, hospitals, and universities have reached out to him and provided stats and various insights as to why it is a bad idea. If all of those people have not gotten to him, i am doubtful that Johnny will. If the recent election has taught us anything, it should be that facts mean nothing to politicians, its all about feelings and vibes. There is a saying I heard in a NJB video actually, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it." and that basically sums up this whole thing.
I support bike lanes! I am no longer a cyclist but lifelong Torontonian who walks, TTCs and drives. I have seen fewer accidents where and when we have bike lanes. Accidents for everyone. Like his brother Rob, Doug makes decisions without any research, just whatever whenever he and his cronies want.
@justindot4887 how else are you going to address the constant gridlock? Can't add more cars even with no bike lanes (all roads are at capacity), can't build new roads unless you do a big dig (over $100 bn for Doug's tunnel project), can help put more people on bikes...
This was a great video the more that talk and bring this insanity to the people the better. This bill is so very wrong. But until more people are killed from riding bikes with no lanes for them to ride in will Doug Ford realize how wrong he was in his thinking. (if he was thinking)
Well said, JS. This is an awful bill highlighting the fact that the Ford government has no desire to make its cities better and healthier places to live. Keep up the good fight.
👍💯💯 Very well articulated, Johnny Strides!! It's an asset to your channel, in my opinion, to sometimes provide viewers with more in-depth information regarding Toronto issues (that go beyond what we see and hear during a typical, but always pleasant, tour around this city). Looking forward to future videos and live streams.
If you've ever come into the city in the evening down Bloor St. W. you will see lots of parking on the side of the street. Those cars take up much more space on the streets than the bike lanes. There are many reasons for Toronto's gridlock. But Doug Ford can't fathom multiple factors he likes it simple-real simple. What does that tell us about Mr. Ford?
SUV and pickup drivers have a bad sense of judgment of cyclists placement on the road due to the width and height of their vehicles. Their weight also does more damage to the roads. Bad for everybody.
We can blame the regulators for allowing such idiotic designs. Not Just Bikes did an excellent video on that subject. Just look at how much smarter vehicles that perform the same functions are designed in European and Asian markets.
Why can't cyclists use side streets instead? Apparently, the answer is that side streets are not as long as main streets; thus, cyclists would need to take long zigzag detours. The detours would also bypass shopping districts. There are also barriers such as railway right-of-ways and river valleys that only main streets cross.
Yes. They would be slowed down. Welcome to the world of the overwhelming majority that either drive or take public transit. What percentage of the adult population you think uses a bicycle as their primary mode of transportation? 2%? 5%?
Yeah, the side street argument is insane IMO. Try going from Yonge & Bloor to Yonge & Davisville using only side streets... good luck. Plus a lot of cyclists are going to destinations on those major corridors which means they're going to end up not avoiding them entirely anyway. Whoever at the province suggested that has obviously never looked at a map or stepped foot inside the city. It simply doesn't work whether it be along Bloor-Danforth, Yonge Street or just about any other major corridor.
@@bobhill4364 I read in an article that bicycle use could be as much as 10%, but that would occur only along streets with bike lanes. Apparently, bike lanes induce demand.
@TheTrolleyPole Well surely, a GTA direct referendum on the issue could solve this? Just let the people vote on this single issue and we'll go with what the people want? And those articles are just propaganda. The truth is more subtle. A better network would result in slightly more bike riders, but way more inconvenienced drivers and those taking public transit. The reality is, the general preference is for a car. It's a superior way to travel. You can get slightly more people to ride by crippling other ways to get around. But to call that demand is just propaganda at this point.

Cars don't want me in their lanes and I don't want them in mine either but, unfortunately, that's where we are going back to. It's senseless since "world class cities" are embracing the bicycle (New York City, Berlin, Paris, Montréal, Copenhagen...
It's so stupid. Bloor St is one of the best used corridors and one of the lanes which inspire me to ride. Or the very least ensure that motorbikes and vehicles with 4 or more wheels travel more slowly on those roads that have speed limits too high given their safety issues.
One more thing in favour of bike lanes: bicyclists are not contributing to the horrendous pollution and smog over Toronto. Your riding instead of driving is helping keep the health destroying gunk down. Darkglass3011, I hope your bike protest was a successful one today. Keep on fighting. Johnny, feel better soon.
Good morning Johnny, how are you, mate? I think all cyclists 🚴♂️ lives should matter here! Have a great weekend & see you mates in the chats soon!! 😎👍
To cut down on congestion, They need better mass transit in the outer areas so that people will leave their cars behind and use mass transit to come into Toronto. If they get rid of bike lanes, all that it is going to do is bring more cars into the city adding to the congestion. Plus you have a lot of bad drivers that block the cross walks.
Having protected bike lanes = good, sacrificing ½ an entire road = bad. The purpose of any roadway is to move people and goods as efficiently and safely as possible. Immediately killing ½ of a main roadway’s square footage for bike lanes was unwise and illogical. In fact, when these bike lanes are ‘reclaimed’, consideration should be given to rebuilding them with dedicated bus lanes and increasing the public transit bus fleet. Financial Disclosures: none.
I don’t live in Toronto, anymore. Nor do I ride a bike. But come on, Mr. Premier! Every major metropolitan city in North American has bike lanes. You can’t argue they’re not used regularly. Ripping them out will be costly, and won’t solve congestion. Don’t delude yourself.
One thing that is hardly ever mentioned is that where bike lanes are located those streets have become more liveable streets and are busy with pedestrian traffic as well. They serve as destinations as opposed to highways for people who don't even live here. That's something that Thug Ford wouldn't understand.
Think about it ,more insurance payout from insurance company’s . Food delivery ride bikes . I ride bikes in winter ,2 days last yr I couldn’t cause snow . Minister transportation, shrugs his shoulders hearing about people injured or killed . Every person in committee against bike lane removal.cyclists need get home safe . Think ford wants act as mayor
Agreeably, Toronto's traffic infrastructure can be really piss-poor at times, including with how others behave while using the roads. Cyclists will have either have to pedal within range of motor vehicles' speeds on shared roadways (easier with ebikes/scooters than pedal bikes) or pedal carefully along with pedestrians on the sidewalks when it comes to major roads in the city. If it comes down to choosing one or the other, I'll go with the sidewalk or just stick to residential roads where it's possible.
I'm not a fan of bike riding on busy sidewalks, they really need to be on the roads but I certainly understand where you're coming from. Great comment!
I literally don't understand any of this or why anyone would want it. Have you ever heard a cyclist say "one more lane"? No, we get our one lane per direction and we're happy with it
So I don't live in the city, but I have on many occasions ridden my bike into downtown, as well as my car. Bike lanes never really bothered me as a driver, and they are pretty convenient as a cyclist, but having bikes on the road around you is super stressful as a driver. Cyclists are supposed to follow the rules of the road while on the road, but they often make dangerous maneuvers that could cause an accident. I do find it strange how there is this constant war between the side that wants to remove cars and the side that wants to remove bikes. I really don't understand it. People need to do both. My proposal to fix this would be dedicate some 4-6 streets exclusively running west-east and north-south for cars (no street cars or bikes), and 2-4 streets for cyclists. Mixing cars, bikes and streetcars is simply not a good solution.
Bike lanes aren't on every major corridor and the ones they are on make a lot of sense. Yes, there's cyclists who ride like absolute lunatics, but there's always tons of dangerous driving happening as well. We can blame improper road design and an utter failure to enforce the rules of the road for both instances IMO.
@CripplingDuality fact of life my friend. You are going to see them pull down the bike lanes and he is going to get elected with a better mandate soon.
Bloor St is not just The Annex. West of the Humber River, bicycle usage is not common yet entire lanes were removed all the way to 22 Division. West of 22 Division, there are no bicycle lanes.
Have you seen a map of Toronto's bike network? They're under utilized in the west end because it's not well connected, this is the first step to fighting the suburban sprawl and car dependency in that area. If you build it, they will come. You have to start somewhere and this is much needed to bring a neglected part of the city up to standard.
I'm definitely disappointed with the bike lane removal on 3 Major Arterial roads in Toronto, and the fact that if we get seriously hurt because of the bike lane removal, we can't sue Provincial for this stupid idea. I'm with everyone that is against this plan because I ride my bike too, despite I bruised my shoulder last month from my tires losing traction on the dust/bits of stones on the pavement. I'm not sure if any of you knew, but I remember hearing in the headlines more than a year ago for the Toronto mayor byelection, Mark Saunders (former Toronto Police Chief), he was one of 3 nominee that would potentially run as mayor. If he had won, one if his plan was to remove bike lanes on Major Arterial roads such as Av. University Ave, and also suspend longer stretch of bike lanes on all major roads. That's all I remember. However, I'm glad that didn't happened back then, but here we are now! 😢
I really enjoyed this segment ,what many cyclists worry about . I am cyclist I was hit by car . They know there gonna be death by introducing government non liability, after committee,in there amendment
Look at the designs and locations of these bike lanes. You have sidewalk -- bike lanes - street parking. Sidewalk - bike lanes - Food truck. I guess it is fine for someone buying from food truck in front of city hall only to get run over by some stealthy e-bike / e-scooter on the bike lanes. Then there are the delivery trucks. For certain parts of the city maybe we can put bike lanes on sidewalks just like they are doing in York Region. Another question is how many Bike Couriers vs Food couriers (usually e-bikes) vs Bike Commuters are there using these bike lanes? Up in the suburbs even the e--motorcycles are on bike trails!!! Bike Couriers and Food Couriers on e-bikes amount to outlaws bicyclists as they don't usually have courtesy nor use their bells to let people know they are coming.
E bikes are here to stay despite them being technically illegal. With the poverty creating laws of the government, you will have thousands more unemployed if you ban these bikes as it's the only way for many to even survive. Bad policies... Sadly most people don't have a basic understanding of economics.
I totally support this bill wholeheartedly as a disabled person who lives on Bloor West. I have been sworn at shown the finger when I am in the crosswalk. Cyclists think they are above the law and can do whatever they want. Same thing when I am on Wheeltrans I have been told by cyclists to move and they sworn at Wheeltrans drivers. Bikes do not belong in the city people should use transit or walk. My life has value to i deserve respect
There are rude cyclists like that around unfortunately. I do my best to respect the traffic rules and show patient courtesy with other users on the streets, be it with vehicles or pedestrians. However it really comes down to how we treat each other, showing the same respect we would want to receive. I rather wait a bit to allow someone to safely pass on by than to throw a childish fit over it. Hope that you don't get too many days like this.
@@jennymcmillen5626Zero Enigma in NYC is one of them, he is very disrespectful, thinks he owns the streets and yells at anyone that gets in his way. ANYONE.
That's sad to hear, but your issues lie with the lack of enforcement. Also you're obviously not paying attention to the state of driving in the city if your take away is that cyclists think they're above the law. When's the last time you saw someone come to a complete stop turning right on a red (or at a stop sign?). To say that bikes do not belong in the city is beyond absurd, there's a reason just about every major city in the world is building out their bike networks and reducing dependency on cars... including this one up until this bill.

Your riding instead of driving is helping keep the health destroying gunk down. Darkglass3011, I hope your bike protest was a successful one today. Keep on fighting. Johnny, feel better soon.
Good morning everyone
Good morning
All Lives Matter whether you ride a bike or drive a car
Good morning Johnny, how are you, mate? I think all cyclists 🚴♂️ lives should matter here! Have a great weekend & see you mates in the chats soon!! 😎👍
good morning everyone
How many cars can you fit into a bike lane? Zero. It's just like getting rid of sidewalks. Means more cars and more congestion not less.
It's ironic that you filmed this with your background video of you riding your bike on bloor West. Don't see any gridlocks there
BLACK lives MATTER said Toronto, SO.
Johnny l rode my bike 🚲 on the road all the time, however more cars-more danger!😢
Doug Ford is so wrong on this
2 tons of metal for the comfort of in person. This is the fact for cars
One guy driving a huge empty pickup truck and many like him are causing congestion.
One thing that is hardly ever mentioned is that where bike lanes are located those streets have become more liveable streets and are busy with pedestrian traffic as well. They serve as destinations as opposed to highways for people who don't even live here. That's something that Thug Ford wouldn't understand.
How about stopping street parking. I hate having to dodge back and forth between parked cars and cars turning left.
No, we get our one lane per direction and we're happy with it
Disappointment and a failure of a premier to be polite. Says one thing and then does the opposite.
The thumbnail of Doug looks like he'll explode like a Pizza Pocket !!
@@JohnnyStrides Totally agree.
Petitions wont help. We cna try but unfortunately this is done..sad. we are ar their mercy. Very very disheartening
Not on their own, no, but this kind of doomerism does even less
@CripplingDuality fact of life my friend. You are going to see them pull down the bike lanes and he is going to get elected with a better mandate soon.
@@kartikkantheti5690 Voting every few years is not the only instrument available.
0:25 Don’t forget also the former city councillor for Ward 2 Etobicoke North from 2010 to 2014
I'm definitely disappointed with the bike lane removal on 3 Major Arterial roads in Toronto, and the fact that if we get seriously hurt because of the bike lane removal, we can't sue Provincial for this stupid idea.
Time to vote for the next Premier in Jun 2026, even if Doug supports gas tax cut.
I really enjoyed this segment ,what many cyclists worry about .
I am cyclist I was hit by car .
They know there gonna be death by introducing government non liability, after committee,in there amendment
Your best video yet
My opinion bikes should be charge a registration fee and mandatory insurance policy for cyclist in case of a they hit a car
