    This is very common. Consider this, objects would often fall into the well while the well was in use. For example, one might accidentally drop a jug for water into the well while he or she is filling it with water. However, the vast majority of artifacts in most wells wind up in the wells as trash fill once the wells are abandoned. In the case of the Jamestown wells we think that many of them became contaminated with salt water and then became trash pits. No garbage collection back then.

    You are spot on with the girl and isotope data. We ran the isotope data and found out that she was indeed European due to the wheat based diet as opposed to corn based for the VA region. Also, the oxygen isotope levels strongly suggest southern England. Sorry about the no comment thing, I'm one of the archaeologists and it would have become a full time job to police all the obnoxious ones. I wasn't exactly sure what you meant by your other question. Thank you for your interest.

      There is a list online of the families that arrived in Va. My ancestor was named Biggs. I traced him all the way to my daughters. Pretty cool. His grandson would have been aware of or maybe involved in Bacons rebellion in the 1670s . I need to do more research. Online genealogy sites are good, but its real people that share information is how i got most of my data. Good luck

    • @wynwilliams6977
      @wynwilliams6977 6 лет назад

      @@thrifikionor7603 right... that is what is called making inferences on guess work and is always a bad idea ;) the well would of been in use for some time until it got polluted by salt water, it would then of been used as a rubbish pit, the shaft on the halberd was broken, the blade bent and the axe missing i guess it was old, had been used to lever something up maybe or maybe the blade bent when it was chucked in.

    • @chrisball3778
      @chrisball3778 3 года назад +1

      @@wynwilliams6977 Its supposition, but it makes more sense than someone just throwing out a weapon like that. A new shaft would have been easy to manufacture, seeing as they were surrounded by forest, but metal would have been in short supply. The axe isn't missing on the halberd- it's just bent. It's a design with a small, crescent-moon shaped blade, probably optimised for hooking and stabbing with the point, rather than chopping (the design of halberds varied considerably, as per this image: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halberd#/media/File:Hallebardes-p1000544.jpg ). Even if the head couldn't have been repaired, it could have been recycled into other useful objects. The pistol (still loaded) absolutely would not have been thrown away on purpose. They were REALLY valuable, cutting-edge military technology, and they were actively under siege much of the time. If someone dropped that down a well, you can absolutely bet that they'd go to some lengths to try to retrieve it. Lashing a couple of halberds together, or lowering a damaged one down on a piece of string to fish it out probably wasn't a smart idea, but we're talking about someone who's already dropped a loaded pistol worth the equivalent of thousands of dollars down a well- i.e. no Jacobean Einstein.

      The majority of artifacts one will find in a well are intentionally thrown into the well as rubbish, but when you get towards the bottom you often find things that accidentally wind up in there such as complete ceramic vessels, which were likely being filled with water from the well bucket when they then fell in.

    Hmmm, I wonder why someone would throw a firearm down a well? Can’t imagine.
    Maybe in the future they’ll find Jimmy Hoffa in a metal barrel filled with concrete along with lots of booze bottles, many more firearms, syringes and meth pipes. Ooh, treasures. What is this shinny little disk and who in the hell is MacDonald, he must have been very popular.
    Hey, we are what we throw away and it isn’t looking good, but will be great fun and mind boggling for future generations. Can you believe people used to actually live like this? He touched that with his bare hands, did you see that? Quick, give me a Soma, spray me down with disinfectant and get me a genetically engineered tissue patty before I hurl. Eew, people used to actually touch each other and eat things grown in,... dirt, ugh. OK, just having fun. Forgive me and relax. I love science and history and the more I learn, the more absurd people seem.
