  • This is a DIY furniture risers / bed risers gift idea to help with furniture that is either too low or for someone who has trouble getting in/out of the furniture. In addition to furniture these risers could also be used to raise up a bed, table, etc. The risers are made of cedar decking and with a 4x4 douglas fir post which makes the design very strong and durable, should be much more so than commercial cheap plastic risers. The finish is brushed on polyurethane clear gloss. The video shows a materials list and an estimate for the cost as of making the video.

      Hey Matthew, Hopefully it wasn't while you were asleep, that would've been a rude awakening! On the other hand glad the video is of some help. I can say this riser design is extremely strong, much stronger than plastic risers.

      Cool, glad you like the project. This was a fun project, easy to make, extremely sturdy due to the design, and they make a inexpensive gift idea. They seem to be well received from the several sets I've made so far.

    If any questions or improvements for this project please let me know. If you like the video please comment, like, share, & subscribe to my channel. I'm considering making these risers for sale on ebay if there was enough interest. If you'd consider purchasing a set of these risers please feel free to let me know in the comments.

    great video, very helpful thank you. I was thinking about raising my bed to have more storage under it but I want to raise it a lot more, and maybe for safety make the "insert" part deeper? do you have any suggestions/tips on this? do you think that if I did a similar model in higher scale with a deeper inset it would be safe enough? thank you for your time!

      Glad you liked the project. This design was intended to raise up beds/furniture a little bit to help in getting in / out of them better. To keep the height to length/width ratio at a safe level to minimize risk of tip over, the right thing is a "bed storage platform" for raising up a bed a lot for storage. The bed storage platforms on RUclips are fairly involved with drawers, etc. In order to turn my riser design into a bed platform each of the 4 risers would have to be attached together for example with thick plywood to form a rigid box structure to prevent tip over. The plywood could be use to replace the cedar side walls in my video. Adjusting the pocket insert depth may be a good idea depending on the specific design of your bed feet posts but in my opinion the main concern is tip over. Good luck with your project.

      Glad you like the design, they do work good. I've been thinking about making these for selling on ebay/offerup however not sure if it could be made profitable. PS - Sorry for delay responding, I took a break from youtube but am back now.

    Great concept, thanks for the video. I'm going to use it to raise my couch. One slight glitch.. aren't 1x4 and 1 x 6 boards actually 3/4 x 3.5 and 3/4 x 5.5 ?

    • @True_Lou
      @True_Lou  6 лет назад

      Glad you like the concept! Makes it worth the effort to post the video. I've made several sets of these as gifts and can say they work and look great. For the board size I used 5/4 cedar decking boards and so actual thickness is 1", the width is 3.5" and 5.5" as you mention. The board size is called out in the 2d dimensioned picture in the video. This said, it should work ok using 3/4" actual thickness boards. I chose to use 5/4 decking because it was a bit less expensive than 3/4" actual thickness boards, also 5/4 will be stronger in case the furniture/bed had rollers and was to slide around and bump the side wall boards, I chose cedar because it looks nice but not the strongest of wood.

    Would this work for a bed!???

    • @True_Lou
      @True_Lou  2 года назад

      It sure would work for a bed, however it would depend on the size of the bed from posts as they touch the floor, they would need to fit into the pocket at the top of the riser. PS - Sorry for delay responding, I took a break from youtube but am back now.

    Do you make custom ones ? I have a old sofa and the corner legs are wider.

      Hey Georgene, Glad you like the video. I've been thinking about possibly making these for sale if there was enough interest. For sure this design could be customize to fit any furniture or bed. Other easy customizations could be different types of wood & finishes. I've built several sets so far and can say they work & look great. Being solid wood they are by far sturdier than hollow plastic risers.

    I am interested in doing a project like this but I have very little experience in any type of DIY project. My bed's legs are 4in by 4in (so hard to find pre made for such wise legs) so I'm not sure what measurements of wood I would need to go along with my project. Would these measurements work?

    • @True_Lou

      Hey Becca, The risers in the video wouldn't work for your use because the 4x4 post material used to form the support for the bed legs is actually 3.5"x3.5" inside dimension. But you could use this riser concept to make a 4.5"x4.5" inside dimension version. I can think of several ways to do this but the best option would depend on what wood materials you want to work with and what wood cutting tools you have access to or could get help with cutting the pieces to size. For example I used 1" Cedar decking for the sides because I think it looks really nice with a clear finish and the Douglas fir 4x4 post material was used because it's much harder than cedar and so less likely to be damaged by the bed legs, Douglas fir also cheaper than cedar. I used a miter saw to cut all the pieces to the correct lengths & then a hand drill to screw the pieces together after gluing them. What I'd do if I was making a 4.5"x4.5" riser is rip two pieces of 4x4 post down to 4.5" length x 2.25" width x 3" height (the height is dependent on how much you want to raise the bed up) and then screw those two pieces together, then I'd cut 1x6" cedar decking material to size to form sides and bottom pieces. If you'd like I could make a list of the dimensions of each piece needed for this concept. If you don't have a miter saw I'm betting you can find someone to help you cut the pieces, from there the next step would be gluing and screwing the pieces together, painting or spraying on a finish of your choice, and then if you have hardwood floors to add adhesive backed felt pads to the bottom. And of course need to make a set of 4 of them.Wanted to mention I'm considering making risers for sale on ebay if there was enough interest and could even customize them to any length, width, or height. So far there hasn't been enough interest.

    Would these work for tapered legs on a full bed frame? The legs are slanted outwards. Thanks

      I'm sure this type design would work for what you describe. One could customize this design to any size or height. I've been thinking about possibly making these for sale if there was enough interest in them.

      I'm considering making these risers for sale if there was enough interest. I even made a set of 4 to place on ebay as a test, just haven't yet. Though the ones I made don't meet your needs though I'd consider making custom size ones. Out of curiosity, how much would you be willing to pay for a set of 4 risers to meet your custom needs?

    This was posted as a "DO IT YOURSELF" project, however, there was nothing here that showed how to make this. It merely showed the finished product. I would suggest that you rename this video.

      For woodworkers this is a very basic project and I thought just knowing the design and dimensions is more important that steps to make it. Still appreciate the feedback, you're right couldve at least put some pictures of the steps I took to make them.

    What about 40 inches. This is not a joke.

    • @True_Lou
      @True_Lou  4 года назад

      Hello, sorry for delay responding. As an idea, what if make 40in tall risers similar width to in the video but then join all 4 risers together with strips of wood in similar way as a metal bed frame does. In this way it keeps the width of the riser to a minimum and keeps cost down.
