Diy Rust Repair Part 2: Hammer Welding, Shrinking and Inner Bracing
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 окт 2024
- Welcome to part two of the repair series on a very rusty 1967 Gmc van. In this video I will be demonstrating a technique called hammer welding, which is used to keep metal straight as you are welding it. We will also show a method of shrinking metal using a Unispotter. Then I'll show a simple way of replicating inner structure and bracing.

Man This Guy is like watching a Surgeon do a Kidney Transplant. Brilliant Work Man !
Don’t sell yourself short. Watching you suffer is the highlight of my day. Great episode. Thanks!
At least someone enjoys watching me suffer haha
Being a welder of rusty cars myself the best bit of the vid is I didn't have to do it, great vid can't wait for next one
Thanks, you understand the struggle then haha
@@CarterAutoRestyling I do ,the sick thing is I kind of enjoy it. But don't tell anybody that,as I also like to moan about it to😉😂
So true.
I for one look forward to every video you do. You are a master of the metal disaster and I learn something from every video which helps me improve on my work. Thanks for sharing your skills.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad to hear you enjoy this stuff!
Finally a good old lad working on salty Canadian wrecks
The Big Band music really helps during the time lapse. Thanks!
Long alien garbage scooping arms? Me too! Must be related! As for your examinations and demonstrations, your are actually a very good teacher, Kyle. I live your interesting choice of background music. Stuff I usually don’t listen to, but fits the work! As to the video doing well, part of this channel is your sense of humour! Your a character for sure and that is part of the appeal of the channel! Keep up the great content.
Glenn Miller Silent Seranade was perfect, great piece of Fab
Great choice for music.
Thanks, I enjoyed it too!
This level of work is almost never seen on entry level old cars. It is awesome to see these rides being saved. Please keep up the great work!
Thanks, the goal is to save as many old vehicles as possible, so I'm glad you approve!
We are not bored by this kind of workmanship !
Well that's good to hear!
"I know I'm not looking forward to it." Fantastic.
Haha thanks!
Oooooh! New techniques! I had earlier requested a pointer to an example of the 'torch shrink' method, and here he covers it, plus the mini version using the special spot welder, plus spot pulling, plus hammer stretching of hot metal -- a bonanza of new techniques, some of which I had not seen before. However, as we have come to expect, there is clickbait -- he keeps promising us a ruined panel, without ever delivering. That's OK. We have all caught on. :)
As usual I like your background music!
Glad you enjoy it!
The Glenn Miller music struck the right note. Beautiful work
Thanks!
100% correct. You certainly don't need a flawless seam on a floorless vehicle.😂
Thank you for showing me your hammer welding technique. I used it on a Lancia Flaminia door repair and it worked very well. I replaced the lower 7 inches of the outer panel and butt welded the join using your hammer welding technique and the owner of the door was so happy with the result he paid me extra for the job. thanks once again.
Wow thank you! It makes my day when I hear from anyone who found these videos helpful!
Are you kidding ! That is perfect for me , from what I see of Body Shop doing their so call body work , bondo smooth it out and done! You do a very professional Job, my friend.
Thanks!
Great refresher on closure welding
The addition of the cat is a nice trick!
Thanks, the editing department really outdid themselves haha
You are the Sahara of dry humor, I love it. And I'm learning lots besides.
Haha thanks, I try!
I love the basics because that is about all I might attempt on my own. Thanks for the great tips and the humor.
Thanks for watching!
Being raised in Southern California the only real rusty cars I saw came from back east. Your videos show that the average guy with your instruction and basic body working tools can fix something that's pretty rusty. Today I see people are saving old cars that surely would have been scrapped when I was young. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing! I only had a gas torch when I was young so welding in panels, hammer and dolly was how I got it done and lead was my best friend lol.
Hi Kenny, thanks for the note! The goal is to save as many old vehicles as we can, so it's my hope that these videos are helping other people out with their projects.
i love this channel, i have been learning a lot watching this guy, he 100% original, he don't copy other guys doing mostly the same with expensive tools and expensive sponsors, he teach us how DIY with basic tools and principles and also i enjoy the sense of humor . 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome! I'm glad you are getting something useful out of this stuff! I try to do the opposite of what all the successful channels are doing!
you always pick the best music to accompany the video thanks
Thanks!
Nice job. Thank you for posting this. Kind regards.
I would like to say this video was both entertaining and informative, but...........................
Nice cat!.
The round corners are for stress relief, it helps to stop a fracture forming right at the pointy end.
Its used in big ships fixes. I dont think the side of the van will be facing much savage wave-wind action.
Seriously great video. 2x👍
Thanks! I was actually contemplating sealing up the undercarriage and taking it out for a voyage on the high seas...now I'll have to redo that patch with rounded corners haha
@@CarterAutoRestyling lol
Pretty decent fabrication tips. This is the type of repairs people like to see. Most people would love to save old hot rods and classics but can't afford the thousands of dollars just for the replacement sheet metal repair panels. I think more videos like this would put your RUclips channel at the top of the list. Keep the cool stuff coming 😎
Thanks! More rusty van videos coming soon!
Wow, So much metal behavior to learn about. Right on brother. Great stuff.
Thanks Doug
This van series is 1 of the best on you tube. Your covering a lot of basic that new people need to do!
Wow thanks for saying that!
You are a really good metal fabricator and metal finisher, nice work really enjoy your video's
Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
@Carter Auto Restyling - Two reasons why some people like this build so much is, it reminds us of trying to fix our first money pit project while learning what not to do and what to do to fix it right versus fix it cheaply, and the other reason is, you can't make it any worse than it already is.
It would be a challenge to make it worse than it is haha
Thank you for your saving old cars
Got to save as many as I can!
You really have a talent that You could teach a lot of people Keep up the good work and videos videos and smile once in a while lol You're pretty humorous also You give people hope to fix all of our Is broken down pieces of pieces of lol
Thanks, I do hope this inspires some people to fix their hopeless wrecks!
After watching your techniques I was able to salvage a bad rear fender for my '36 Chevy truck. These may be basic techniques but most videos don't show the basics so what you are showing is much more important to us than the more advanced techniques. Keep it up!
I'm really happy to hear that these videos have helped you out! 36 Chevys are awesome!
You are the best I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, its really helping me out with my 48 dodge.
Thanks, glad to hear some of this has been helpful in fixing up your Dodge!
Hey Carter, thanks for the tips and tricks!:) I save the cut out junk and make many trips to the "pile" to verify dimensions and shapes. I try to save the best side for last so I have the reference. Thanks!:)
Coming along nice, repairing rust can get a little old, but it's still just as satisfying in the end, one of my hates was removing those 70's after market Sunroofs and repairing the hole, it was one of those things where you do one, and next minute you have everyone wanting there's done, they say word of mouth is the best advertising, but it can be a pain in the ass as well lol...
Thanks! It sounds like I may have some sunroof work to do on this one, so hopefully word doesn't get out haha
I've seen my friend Richard Ruth hammer weld complete floor boards in 55 Chevys that way. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching!
I'm still catching up on your past segments. Again, lots of learning for me to do yet, but I'm understanding the basics a lot better now. As for that van, it must be a labor of love or a family heriloom, that is too much rust even for here in Ontario (Canada's rust belt). I think you would have to pay (large) the wrecking yard to take it. lol
Carter.... you are a great restorer ..... the attention to detail you provide is paramount. Most so called restorer that I've seen to be honest have to many tools and some "talent"... Big pat on the back to you ...great video.
Thanks for the kind words Pierre!
Thanks for showing the hammer welding technique! Often heard the term but never really understood how to do it. I will definitely try to do some hammer welding on my next project. Looking forward to seeing more of your rust repairs!
Thanks! Hope it helps you out on your project. Plenty of rust repair videos to come haha!
You have great skill and talent nice clean job 😊
Excellent work. You are most definitely a perfectionist and this encourages us amateurs to try to just follow how you do the repairs. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
Nothing wrong with working from a garage some big companies came from garages I am shore someone has said this already but teaching others is something that will always be respected. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm happy to just mess around with junk in my garage, being "successful" doesn't really appeal to me.
@@CarterAutoRestyling success is measured by the junk leaving the garage as something that someone wants or likes only has to be one person. Everyone else doesn’t count. Keep up the teaching.
Great video, no one has those skills anymore. You are very talented.
Thanks!
A tad late to the party but I hope you are well during this Good Friday. Great repair as always.
God bless.
Hi Paul, I'm doing fine thanks. All the best to you and yours.
Thanks for posting just going through you videos again and love this one. Your hints. About what can go wrong and how to avoid them are extremely helpful . I think have had pretty much everything go wrong when I have attempted rust repairs
Thanks for watching! I can relate to everything going wrong, perseverance is key!
You blown my mind with the way you fix that square hole and left that panel like nothing never happens.
Thank you, I thought I was going to make a mess of it, but it came out ok in the end.
You doing that reconstruction with patience and care and now you enjoy the results of your hard work. Thanks for share your knowledge with us.
Another fantastic repair! I learn something every time! All the very best boss.... Cheers from me and the Menace.
It's an excellent guide on what not to do. Thanks for watching this garbage!
I'm a new subscriber here and I find your channel very interesting and you make very good videos. I really appreciate your fantastic metal working skills and yes your episodes are very educational. I really like that old Chevy van but its rusty condition scares me away but where you come in from makes that van look very savable!!! Your old fashioned body working skills are a lost art and you are a savior to that! I'm glad I found your channel and I look forward of you bringing in really dilapidated classics and give them a new life with your metal working body skills with what you call your "garbage arms"!!! lol!!!😂 My father was a gifted certified auto and truck mechanic for 45 yrs and he was a self taught body Man as well. He would do body work on cars in his own garage in the 70s. We didn't have a uni-spotter and so my father like you said used a torch to flatten the outward dimples on a body panel. You and my dad do old fashioned body art which is a lost art, old fashioned is the best! Keep up on your great channel and I look forward to more of your metal working art on classic relics you bring into your garage
Hi, thank you for the kind words and for subscribing! Your dad sounds like a great guy!
Just found your channel. Kids @ work were puzzled. Why i drive a 95 corolla? And how can i have a nice shop, lots of 🔧and hoist. I pointed to their $80.000 truck. Phht so? Well my Toyota was $600. Gr8 channel. New subscriber.
Yeah you get it! People are just throwing money out the window by making car payments on a vehicle that loses its value as soon as it drives off the lot.
You Kyle, are a master. The "all-sixteenths" is a favorite of mine. Thank you for everything and the cats too! Chuck in NE Kansas
Thanks Chuck!
Uni spotter trick is pretty cool. I might have to get one of the hundred dollar ones
You can sometimes find the name brand ones for sale used for cheap. I paid 200 for mine and it looked brand new and came with 2 boxes of studs.
Sometimes I need to watch it twice to really come to grips with the technique. I do think that the feline has it figured out beyond what us mortals have figured out.
Good video. I don't have a TIG but i'm going to try hammer welding using my cobra torch. Good fabrication and I like the humor. I still think about the video where you restored your coat.
Thanks! The restored jacket is still holding up well haha
Nice work! It’s interesting to see how you can mold a flat piece of metal into something with complex bends. I like your dry sense of humor!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy this stuff!
The hammer welding technique was fascinating. Thank you for sharing. You make it look pretty easy but I'm sure it takes a great deal of experience to achieve such results.
Can't wait for the next vids on that rear quarter repair. Looks awesome. Another great video ,thanks.
Thanks Brian!
Back to basics is why we watch...I like this project...another great content video...keep em commin...
Thanks! Will do!
I was definitely not devastated with my decision to subscribe and watch this video...
That's fantastic news! Thanks!
Nice work Kyle. That old van is going to look like new when you get through with it. I appreciate the lessons on metal working, it's helping me with my truck.
Thanks Ken! The quality standard on this one is just "better than it was" so I'm hoping I can achieve that.
That's amazing working metal like you do, I hope your getting paid very well for it
Thanks!
Your good explanations and good 'filming' shows that even people like me could do some of this stuff especially if I had a cool shop cat like yours! 😆
Thank you! I'm glad that my nonsense can be translated into something useful or helpful to others.
G’day. Just joined in and thoroughly enjoyed your work and approach. I’ll have to go back and watch your other videos. You are doing a great job. Thank you. Not a waste of your time or mine. 👍
Hello! Thanks for joining in and watching this stuff! I'm happy to hear your time wasn't wasted!
I was raised on a farm and even though I haven't lived in that setting for many decades I consider myself to be pretty handy. I can fix a lot of stuff. But reshaping/repairing dented sheet metal is something I A) don't understand and B) screw up every time I try it. So watching your deft touch is that much more fascinating for me to watch. Cool video.
Thanks for the nice comment and for watching the video!!!
Great video Kyle, your tig welding is so neat, I enjoy learning all your techniques, looking forward to the next video. Thanks.
Thanks, I'm a self taught amateur at tig welding, but as long as the two pieces of metal stay glued together I'm happy haha
Your a real metal artist and I appreciate you spending the time to show the rest of us your craft. I myself have been a welder since 1975 and I am still learning new ways to do the same old shit.
Thank you! I'm still learning every day too.
Be as positive as you can. I learned a lot from your video.
Thanks, I'll try!
Love your work and your channel
Thanks!
Friggen AMAZING JOB
Thanks!
I love your videos. I enjoy you redoing basics, I pick up something new every time. Thank you
Thanks for watching this stuff!
An excellent and informative video.
Glad you found it useful. Thanks!
Basics is good, love watching you do this type of work. Thanks for posting
Thank you!
I do enjoy your humor
Glad to hear that haha
Love your videos! You have mad skills
Thanks, glad you enjoy them!
Good job
Really enjoyed the patch work and the tips. Van is really taking shape, the rest was alot. The panels you put in and welded on makes it look like you are just removing the paint. Will be looking forward for next video.
Thank you! I hope the next video doesn't disappoint
Live chat is nice but it seems so temporary, beautiful work Kyle, your gonna make masters out of everyone who watches you work, see ya next time
Thanks Jeff! I hope these videos help people out with their projects!
Hello, hammerwelding with tigwelding is absolut awesome, thank you for watching.
Thank you!
I think that the little nub in the middle of the heated spot could reasonably be called an umbo. A big nub would be a jumbo umbo. it's also good to see that you're a pragmatist and not a picky perfectionist, evidenced by the way you fabbed the brackets. Top hole!
Good to know the technical term!
Good video mate, like your cat👍🏻
Thanks! I like my cats too
Thank you for the knowledge.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome job. A van has a big side panel hard to keep straight
Love your channel along with your dedication and immense talent......keep up with the great projects.
Thanks for the kind words!
Keep up the great work! Cheers
Thanks, I'll try!
That was pretty cool. I like the way it turned out. I can't wait to see the next one in this series.
Thanks!
Looking forward to more of this Kyle. Great video, thanks.
Thanks Russ! Glad you are enjoying it!
First time I did auto body it really messed me up. I was hooked on Austin Minis ( the old ones) for a decade. After therapy and treatment I’m still hooked on rust.
Excellent as always. Thank You
Jim
Thanks Jim!
You do amazing work I’m glad you are saving that van Keep them Video’s coming
Thank you! I'm glad I have the opportunity to bring it back to life.
Just discovered your videos, and amazed at your skill at bringing back a van most would have scrapped 👌👌👌
Thanks, I'm glad you were able to discover my videos!
Nice work mate.
Thanks!
Super interesting. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
You shoukd play some Lawrence Welk Band tunes lol
Your work is amazing ! I am glad I found your channel. Thanks for the detailed explanation of how and why you are doing it the way you do . I love learning tips and tricks on keeping these old vehicles on the road . I am 57 and would rather do the work you are doing than buy one already done which is what I have been doing as a hobby since I was 15 . Keep the videos coming , they are awesome !!
Thanks Doug! I'm glad you found the channel too!
Please keep it up. I find your efforts fascinating and informative. P.S. I also enjoy the random cat clips.
Thanks, will do! I'm glad you enjoy the cats too haha
Information absorbed 🧠, thx Carter!
Thanks for watching and absorbing!
Your videos are always interesting and helpful so amazed at how awesome your work comes out
Thank you!
