1940 Ford Fender Repair Part 2: Build A Patch Panel With Simple Tools
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 июл 2022
- In this video on the 1940 Ford Pickup fender I will fabricate a new patch panel to replace the damaged area below the headlight. I will be using mostly hand tools, hammers, dollies, a homemade tucking fork and a cheap Harbor Freight/Princess Auto english wheel. Once the patch is completed I tig weld it in and planish out the welds by hand.

All of those picturesque hills, valleys, ridges and trails and you just beat the crap out of them.
Your talent is immeasurable, your humor is also immeasurable. If you get my drift.
Kyle - your self-deprecating humor is funny, but I am really impressed with the quality of this repair, using fairly basic tools from start to finish. Bravo!
Ron, thanks for the kind words! I grew up reading Professor Hammer's Metalworking Tips every month in Classic Trucks magazine and your teachings have had quite an influence on my career path. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it inspires myself and others to continue expanding our skills.
In spite of the remarks to the contrary, your work is excellent. I look forward to the next installment. Thank you.
Amazingly talented. Wish you would have done the other fender so we could see the front of it also. Great work
Rafferty's Right Down the Line was the amazing song I chose to accompany your even more amazing repair! 👍🔥🔥🔥
Fantastic choice! I just listened to that one earlier today.
@@CarterAutoRestyling I've got Al Stewart's Time Passages cued up for next time. lol😎
Im glad you saved this 40 Ford fender, im very sure purists and street Rodders alike would love to have those repaired fenders! Your self taught metal working skills are nothing short of exceptional! Sorry about the negativity here, you're not getting any of it!!
Your sir are a VERY talented young man, with the slow perseverance ending in Perfection. Amazing work Be Blessed.
Thank you kindly!
I love it. "Bushwacker fender flares have been on backorder since about 1965" I see you are back to the custom flannel shirt and the grinding sparks are starting to create some patina on the T-shirt.
Got to have matching patina on the T shirt and flannel jacket!
I don't know what people say about the work you do but from my observation you and your work with skills, knowledge and your ability is up there with the very best even as short films maker and teach so bless you brother I wish you all the best, so please continue,
Thank you!
Absolutely some of the best sarcasm on RUclips. Keep on keepin on.
Great Job, thank Goodness you left the fine work of the craftsman before you on the bumper bracket opening. We all need a Level to shoot towards. Cheers from N.Y.
Haha got to keep it realistic!
Just wanted to say that you're a metal work is amazing one day you're going to own a automotive restoration business! I don't know if that's your objective but I sure would give it some long careful thought!!!!
Carter..sorry I don't know your first name you have done it again. Saved an antique auto fender with your terrific talent. You humor reminds me of Steven Wright , your work second to none. Well done.
Thanks John! I'm Kyle by the way...
Well Kyle if that's the best you can do, I guess it will have to be good enough. If your objective is to repair the fender so well that you can't see where any of the damage was, you have achieved it. Nice work, it looked better than new. John
Well my plan was to make all the repairs visible, so I guess I failed haha. Thanks John!
Yep the only way to shut up trolls is to use reverse phycology, on them and it works. worked on me, Lol Great work as always Kyle. Fender looked perfect in my eyes. Your a natural at metal work..
I too have a Fender in need of repair. Actually it only needs a new set of strings but I can't afford a luthier which is why I'm watching this video.
I don’t know which has the keener edge-your vixen file or your irony. Love ‘em both!
Haha thanks!
Looks awesome, you can sleep well with great repairs like that
Thanks!!!
We don't have to give negative comments you do it for us.
It took a while but now I get it: Mild mannered young lad who is secretly a super hero. Carter Metalman.
Turning a sow's ear into a silk purse....every time!
At least when I'm filming, we won't get into the butchery that goes on off camera
Wish you would stop wrecking a perfectly bad fender it will never be the same again . It came up great you would think it was a different fender if you didn't see the video an thanks for all the tips on what not to do ive got a little project im starting on soon . Cheers from oz🇦🇺
Thanks Peter! Good luck with your project!
I feel like a fool every time I say wow and yet here I am again……wow Kyle great work.
Thanks Russ!
Love watching you work. I also pick up something.
You, Karl Fisher and Wray Schelin are my favs.
You knocked that mountain down like a glacier in the ice ages.
But, you want some keyboard warrior criticism? You've missed listing the suggested tunes in the last few videos. 😉
Thank you, my sound director is being held hostage in Bangladesh so that's why there is no longer any music
@@CarterAutoRestyling found in possession of an illegal amount of catnip? 🤣
Kyle, I'm going to watch your darn videos whether you like it or not. You're being watched!!!!
Haha that's a bit disturbing, but my own fault for putting videos on the internet...so thanks for watching!
Chad Hiltz thinks he’s a great fabricator but only has 1/10 of your talent if that. Awesome work sure and glad I stumbled onto your channel. Will subscribe right now.
Thank you!
The 39-40 Fords have dozens of curves in the panels and your method is probably the only way to actually restore,as opposed to repairing the dings and dents of past use and abuse. Down here in OZ any early Ford V8 commands insane money so there is little chance of me ever owning another without banging one into shape ,so I watch you to live and learn more. Thanks mate!
Thank you, I'm definitely finding out the hard way just how many curves this stuff has. For me this part is easier than doing bondo work, it would take an artisans touch to do filler work on this era of fenders without making them look sculpted.
Mr. Carter I love your videos.
You are a metal master, keep up the good work
Another impeccable piece of art
Thanks Joe!
I think you have a great channel and do things that other people need to learn, thanks really... Jeff
Thank you Jeff!
Well after that episode..... We need to get our eyes back in socket... Let's face it, it's Mr. Carter from now on... Great job..
Thank you!
I'll be waiting for more disapointment. Thanks for sharing
Well then you're in the right place! Thanks for watching!
Wow you have the skills and the patience looks perfect to me
Thanks, patience is the key!
I am watching a metal forming genius here. Between the skills and pure patience, you sir, are the master. Hopefully it will inspire me to work on my old truck. Thanks
Thanks! I hope you're able to get working on your old truck!
Dare I say: Metal Master! Wow
Thank you!
sweet! another episode of carter fender restyling.
Mate that .is some incredible workmanship.
Thanks!
Outstanding work, the anti -bondo channel .
I'd gladly become a pro bondo channel if they were to sponsor me and send free samples haha
..............................Dude you do fine work, Thumbs Up!.......
Thank you!
I can't believe you did it that way! I would have never done it that way! (Of course, mine would have looked like crap and yours came out looking like new, but that's beside the point.) Go ahead, keep spamming us relentlessly with videos. You can't scare us! (How did I do as an armchair expert bringing negativity to the channel?) On a more serious note, well done and keep up the good work!
You did a fine job of being an armchair expert haha. Thanks for watching!
Wow. What can a mere mortal say? Absolutely fantastic job. I didn't think there was anyone to equal Wray Schelin, but there definitely is.
Wray Schelin can run circles around me, maybe if I live to be 100 I can be as good as him
@@CarterAutoRestyling He is good, but the what must be $100,000 + worth of tools and equipment sure helps. It will take you a bit longer, but the finished result is superb.
@@bobfrankish8883 It only took him 30 minutes what do you want from an amateur! 😎
Saved ANOTHER ONE BETTER than i do i get rust out of. Them by cutting it out n patches go in but get it close n mud u do VERY WELL. N 9 XS OUT OF 10 WHEN U TAKEM DOWN U RUN INTO WHAT U JUST DID FIND A MESS BUT U DO GREAT!!!!!
U know if ur a forty guy u can pick up a fender at a swap meet n know if it looks GOOD but u pick it up N U KNOW RITEAWAY IF ITS BEEN WORKED ON BEFORE U EVEN LOOK UNDER IT !!!!!###!#
All is forgiven Kyle regarding the Bushwacker fender flares... You better make sure the Yosemite Sam Back Off mud flaps find their way on to the repaired fenders! 😆
Oh yeah I've already got a set in stock!
Really first rate work, don't take to heart the armchair experts. Self taught, who's gonna say your way is wrong. Best wishes from Australia.
Your talents are amazing. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Dude, you’re a freaking genius
Haha I don't know about that, but thanks just the same!
Well after all that chaotic mess of metal I'm once again amazed by your skills, great job Kyle 👍
Thank you!
Impressive work man!
Thanks!
You are a great butcher. . everyone loves a great steak! Great work!!!
Thanks I try. Haha
I didn't think there were guys like you anymore.... Your the MAN!!!

@@CarterAutoRestyling There was a guy in Long Beach, Calif named Eddie Potter…. It was amazing how much he could do with so little… no wait, maybe that’s Bad Chad😳 Anyway, looking at those Genuine 40 ford fenders being brought back to like just makes me feel good… The 40 Fords just have the best lines…. that and the 32 of course….
No matter how you do it, the finished product is what counts. Your finish product is outstanding.
Very true, thank you!
Buddy, so much respect for your efforts at starting your own RUclips channel.
Keep posting this quality content and I believe your going to make your mark.
Keep the faith and thanks so much for the content
Thank you Don!
I wish that I had your talent for screwing fenders up. Another awesome video.
Thanks Ken!
Hi Kyle
Thank you for not making us wait too long for more videos.
I couldn’t bring myself to comment on the last video as your tragic loss (deepest condolences) triggered my PTCL (post traumatic cars-loss; my storage guy did not act honourably, costing me six of my favourites)
Sigh …
Anyway, always learning and enjoying.
Pat the cats for me.
So sorry to hear about your car loss! I gave the cats a pet and they seemed pleased.
Kyle which rhymes with style...Fendertastic how you reincarnate a crumble into a car, a stray into a save, a wreck into a pleasing what the heck and a junk yard pest into the best. Loyal fan Kelly
I watch this and think, man that’s really nice. Then you keep going, and I think, wow that’s really really nice. He must be about done. And then you keep going and I think, okay he’s GOT to be done now ‘cause that’s really really really NICE. and then you keep going…
Haha thank you!
Darn on the bushwacker flare backorder...they aren't just for Corvette's anymore...
Great work. I hope to see a video on the rear fenders. I have some real junk to fix especially around the step.
Thanks, the rears are damaged in the same area so I'll try to do a video when the time comes
There is no point to being negative. The fender repair is perfect and appreciate your time and patience to show your work. Nice work on restoring the fender.
Thank you!
I always learn a lot on your channel.........
Thanks Gary! Glad to hear this stuff is somewhat educational!
Hi Kyle,
You say there isn’t enough negativity? Well then.
You always.. ok. Not always.
You never.. well ya, I guess you sometimes do.
You won’t.. oh. I forgot that video where you did.
Ok Ok…I guess I’m not going to be able to throw much negativity your way.
Oh I got one! That medium blue shirt doesn’t go with your jacket and blue “Muscle” shirt.
Come on. Step up your game, man.
Maybe I should start a channel and show the work my projects while wearing a suit and tie. THAT ain’t gonna happen.
Cats sure do like looking at the world upside down.
Fender looks great. Best butchery around.
Cheers,
Joe
The wardrobe department let me down this week. Don't you know that the world is a lot more interesting when viewed from upside down?
I'll give it a try... but i tend to get sick when work upside down.
Remind the wardrobe department what happened to the sound department.
I think It's a great thing to preserve as much of the original as feasibly possible. It would be nice if today's products were built to a standard that would inspire others to restore it 70 years from now. Instead we live in a throw away society, while being preached to about going green. Pretty counter productive if you ask me.
I totally agree!
i don't know how you can be so satisfied with such a ruff outcome......... i am constantly amazed how you manage to make your repairs just "disappear" as if the panel was actually new old stock and all done with a minimal amount of tools......amazing,well done
Thank you!
Yep just saw another mess made ,i mean repair made . I only wish i could mess up a fender like that but at 80 years old i just don;t see me doing it . Looking forward to the next fender it looks like it needs a lot of messing up done to it . Great job Kyle .
Thanks Jim, I'm hoping I can ruin the other fender worse than this one!
That looks better than new! Thank you.
Thanks!
Looks good! I'm just getting ready to dive into my 41 pickup fun stuff
The Ole 40 Ford Coupe was a very popular car here in the foothills area of North Carolina back in the day. For a couple of reasons I'm told, one was all the space in the trunk for cases of Masson jars and the other was the flat head engine. I remember my dad telling stories of how he rolled his with a load in the trunk and only broke one jar and the revenue man drove right on by and didn't see him.
Awesome story!
Keep up the fair work...
I wouldn't worry about those that criticise your methods of tackling your body panel repairs. You always say "one way to repair..." and "my preferred way to repair...". I have never heard you say "this is the only way to repair...". So for those compelled to criticise listen carefully. Kyle is telling you many times in his videos, that what he is showing is not the only way to repair a body panel. Therefore, take it or leave it. As the old saying goes (now is a good time to cover Edgars & Poe's eyes and furry ears) there are many ways to skin a cat. Great video!! thanks!!
His skills should silence any critics!😎
@@glennnickerson8438 Ya but there are some "special" people out there who have made some comments. Yup.. special.
Thanks for the kind words Phil, although I made sure my cat's didn't read the last part haha
Sometimes watching you work on metal is better than watching Fitzee. Both masters at the trade.
Wow thank you!
I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around your work and it's not only because I'm higher than Dolly Parton's hair. I have never seen people do repairs like this and I'm old. Your Chevy 3100 series has inspired me to learn this and do my 53 3100. Also if you ever want to do a video on widening the front and rear fenders say 2" and making rear inners just let me know and I can send you some fenders to use in your video, no charge. Thank you for your time
Haha. I can't say I have any need to widen fenders, but Halfasscustoms widened some fenders on a panel truck a few months back and his approach was similar to how I would have tackled it.
@@CarterAutoRestyling I guess I'll have to keep watching and practicing. I watch his channel.
Sorry If I cannot see the the ruined fender, I continually watch you're repairs and I am always impressed with your work.. You are very talented..!
Thanks for the kind words!
"Jangled up" describes the entire fender, I think.

I wanted to ask how you learned to use all these different tools. When you said you were self taught you answered my question. I am still amazed at your level of expertise to bring back metal that has had the crap beat out of it. Great video and great repair.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad to hear you enjoy watching this type of stuff!
man i wish i had 1/2 your talent
Thanks Fred!
Well, here it is 106 degrees F in the Northern Cal foothills, and the very idea of Saskatchewan seems cool! So I am on a positive note. However, you have issued the clarion call for some negative feedback, so we negative commenters will attempt to answer the call. What we relish, of course, is a nice juicy phukup -- something unequivocally ruined. You have promised to provide such material, but when we look -- it is a desert! We are left wanting, thwarted. After all of this meticulous finishing and so forth, there are no nice big juicy flaws to feature! So there is some cheating going on here! Us negative commenters are getting starved for material. We will have to comfort ourselves with the thought of cool weather in the northern latitudes.
Oh we've got a heatwave here too, not quite 106, but plenty hot just the same. Feel free to stop by here any time between October and April to cool off haha
THAT HAS GOT TO BE THE SLICKEST REPAIR THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!
I was thinking, "You could probably build an entirely new fender."
Then it dawned on me, "You are building a new fender, one piece at a time"!
Kyle, it really is hard to comprehend the reconstruction taking place.
I stand amazed!
Thank you
Wow thanks Glen! Allan and Poe send their greetings to Oscar
Pretty spiffy. Well done.
Thanks Bruce!
Could not think of anything negative to say about that well executed repair, may be next one I'll spot something but I doubt it. I'll keep watching just incase 😉
