Is There A Faster, Easier Way To Mig Weld Thin Sheetmetal? Shocking Trade Secrets Revealed!

- Hello again! In this video I will be patching up a 1940 Ford inner fender apron. This involves using a different mig welding technique that I've been experimenting with. We will also take a look at the completed 1940 Ford truck fenders. The last half of the video will be a long winded discussion about the future and the shocking past of Carter Auto Restyling. Oh and we managed to reach 10k subscribers by the end of August, so as promised, one unlucky viewer will be winning a genuine Saskatchewan licence plate! Thank you all for your patience and I look forward to bringing you updates on the 1948 Gmc project!

It would seem to me that doing a short weld and then grinding like that extends the cooling time, which would reduce the expansion and contraction issues you get with MIG welding thin sheet metal. And because you're continuing the weld from the same point, the metal is already warm, but not hot, so the next bit of weld has less effect on the metal size. And your welds will be more consistent because you're not hopping around to cold metal all the time, you're always welding warm metal. This all makes sense to me, I like it.
Exactly! You did a much better job of explaining it than I did! Thanks!
@@CarterAutoRestyling
Question: I’m not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but what type and grit of sanding dish are you using to grind the fairly hot welds?
Seems that one would require a specific type of material to be able to contend with the heat from the welds?
Fire? lol I am so looking forward to when you get enough money to build a 6 car garage / workshop. I think you were scaring away folks when you caught yourself on fire, i would hope... hahhaah Your humor is amazing...love it... You poor thing a coal miner never loses hope. Turn that coal into a diamond... hahaha
Well my two car garage is filled with 4 vehicles, so if I had a 6 car shop it would be packed with 12...nothing ever changes haha. I've been trying to scare away viewers since day one, but they keep coming back for some reason!
Congratulations ! I've added you to my very limited collection of U-Tube restoration channels. You now rub shoulders with Wray Scheline, Karl Fisher, and the legendary Fitzee. I, too, grew up in an imaginary coal mine and sniffed Elmer's Glue until I found a 12 step group which I could "stick to". ❤😂
Thanks!
Ah, there you are young feller, I was starting to worry. Ok, on with the magic.
I took Auto mechanic apprenticeship in the mid 1960's and would go over to the bodyshop and watch what they were doing. You are a true body and fender mechanic and I'm glad I found your utube videos . Keep up the good videos.
So glad you're posting a new video Kyle i will say that you have been missed.
Haha I guess it's nice to know people have missed this garbage! Thanks for watching!
You are quite the thin metal artist. Your talent and abilities are exceptional! Don't waste time addressing stupid comments to your videos. Splicing and speed-ups are cleverly done, avoiding exposure of your audience to tedious and repetitive sections.
I would love to have you work on a car of mine. Keep making videos of your projects; l love them!
It's amazing what you can do with simple tools. Inspirational, thank you.
I liked the 40 ford fenders. It's all part of restoration. Some people just don't appreciate good work.
Thanks Barry!
The fenders look phenomenal Kyle. Literally from Rags to Riches.
Love this channel. Best hang out on YT. I just can't get enough. Broke my heart with the coal mine reveal. Love me some glue too! Damn bummed that I missed out on the license plate give away. Story of my life...
Haha thanks, maybe I'll do another licence plate giveaway sometime!
You keep on being yourself; you are an excelelnt teacher. Thankl you.
Thanks very much for saying so!
Beat sheet metal, not your wife, folks! Nice vid Kyle always learn a lot from you
Words to live by!
You are definitely very good reworking metal I like watching you take something rotted and restoring it
thanks for the wonderful content. as a novice metal shaper i learn as much from your videos as i do from stuff posted by the likes of Wray Schelin, Ron Covell etc. thanks Kyle.
Wow thanks for the kind words Russell!
Glad to see you! Looking forward to the GMC project. I appreciate what you do and the honest approach you take to putting it out there. I will always be thankful for Scott @Coldwarmotors for mentioning your channel. Cheers and looking forward to seeing you again.
Scott was instrumental in getting my channel going! Thanks for watching this stuff!
No
I'm glad I stuck it out to the end, your story had me chuckling.
Glad you got a laugh out of it!
Glad you’re back; been waitin’ too long! Worth it, though.
Thanks Ken!
2nd video in a row of yours- enjoying the channel & your humor. The flannel was extra funny because I just bought some new ones and the label said “Not for welding.” Always read the instructions!
nice to have you back
I'm just glad to see you back on here. I was a little worried, you really seemed to be bummed out over the 48. I was hoping that you hadn't gotten so frustrated that you gave up on RUclips. What you do is amazing and needs to out there for people like us who really appreciate your work. So glad your broke those chains of your tortured past as miner. Congrats on the 10k and the 8 bucks a day....let me hold a dollar.
Thanks Jay. The 48 is going to be the greatest test of endurance I have faced since my years in the coal mine
Yay a new video, I was hoping you would put something up soon.
Now to enjoy my morning coffee and watch before I go out to work and ruin my day working on miserable old airplanes.
Stay in school kids.
Haha they won't even let me near airplanes, stay in school indeed!
@@CarterAutoRestyling It's not so bad...kinda. The paperwork is the hardest part
for me
Ok, just let the moment pass.....your closing monologue was such a touching story. I now understand why you burn flannel instead of coal.....oh the terror. Lol
I really like your mig technique and cannot wait to screw a few things up before I get it right. I like that it will overall make for a softer, and therefore smoother weld. I have really enjoyed watching your work, the fenders are incredible and I appreciate the lead work.
I hope that viewers realize just how much patience is needed to work metal correctly.
You're humor is awesome
Thanks Doug! Glad you get a laugh out of this stuff!
I heard about this method from Wray as well. I live 30 minutes from his shop and have been taking classes from him since 2010. He told me in person about the guy that was in his class one day and turned him on to this method. He was excited about it and it surprised me because yes Wray was always down on mig welding panels.
This is another awesome video. You are a master metal man and I enjoy watching your incredible skill and attention to detail. I have a jacket that looks like yours btw. You f#cking crack me up. When you walked in with the plunger and locked the door I died laughing! (different video)
I have missed your content. Welcome back
Glad to hear you enjoy this stuff!
Keep up the good work. They will find you
Kyle I congratulated you on 10 K in August and waiting on my plate since. Then you vanished! I would of watch all you did on the fenders. Leave the cats out and I’ll keep watching 😃
Oh the cats aren't going anywhere haha
1:00-1:30 is a perfect description of my current car (that is ~58 years newer than the example)
So glad you're postning a news video Roger from sweden
Thanks Roger!
I lived in Saskatoon for two years- I still shiver at just the memory of remembering looking out at that cold heartless mountain landscape .
Haha!
I find all your viedos informative and entertaining. Please, don't change what you are doing. I always learn something. Thank you for doing this. I do not have a place for the license plate so do not make me a contestant, it would not be displayed and someone else will get to enjoy it.
Thanks Paul!
RE, any criticism you may have taken over the stitch, grind, stitch process, just remember this: "A man with an experience owes no apology to a man with an opinion."
Well said, thanks!
Your videos are not Bullshit, food for thought nay Sayers, keep on trucking dude......
Glad to see you back! Those fenders are amazing, but I understand your decision not to film the process in its entirety. Looking forward to the ‘48 project. Cheers!
Good to be back haha! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy what I've got planned for the 48
I'm glad you're back!
I wondered when you would be posting again. Keep the videos coming please. Another green video showing us how to repair old metal. Thanks.
I thought you were gone But thank you, your back.
Great video on the mig technique. I use mig flux core because, that's what I've got. Too dumb to know any better and have learned to make it work. The technique of 1/2" welds and then grinding should work for me. With the flux core the difficulty is keeping the arc after the pause. When I can hit the puddle when it's still a little red helps to resume the arc. When I jump around it's hard to get the arc going again, even after wire wheeling after each pass, and leaves me with too many pits and skips. But then again I'd have to say I'm more of a farm truck kind of guy. Which means my skills are still developing!:) Thanks!:)
Glad to see you.
Glad to see you Kyle. Thanks for the video.
I always get something I can use from your videos thank you.
Thanks Joe!
❤ good to see you back Kyle!
I was beginning to think you had burned all your flannels, but I was wrong. Good job.
Thanks for the info on the welding tips as i am getting ready to repair a 1956 chevy and i have never used a mig welder but will be forced to learn. Keep up the good work!!!
Here’s another $0.32/day for the month.
Thanks for all the great content and looking forward to the GMC. That’s gonna be a big project.
Thanks, that really helps! Gmc updates coming soon!
Glad to see you back. I can understand why you haven't been posting videos on the 40 fenders. Sometimes all the tedious work is not interesting to some people, however I always learn something from you that try in my own shop. Can't wait to see more videos from you and working on the GMC. 👍
Thanks, I'm glad to hear you get something useful out of these videos!
Been a long time, I'm the old sucker with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel slipping fast. Cheers.
Watch out for them banana peels, I can't afford to lose any loyal viewers!
Hello Kyle. Glad to see your back. Congrats on your 10,000 subscribers. I can see that number growing. I totally appreciate the skills you share on your channel. Personally I was digging watching the transformation of total woods truck 40 fenders become a show truck 40. Watching what you can do with a hammer an some dollies is such a art as well as enjoyable. I was looking forward to see what an how you were going to put use back into that headlight area. Friggin awesome man. Your lead work is pretty phenomenal and is becoming a lost an forgotten art. I totally enjoy watching you manipulate metal to come back to it's former glory. Those 40 fenders truly became a testament of the skills you have. I enjoy watching your work an totally appreciate the way you explain your ways an reasons for how an why you do what you do. I've picked up on awesome tips an pointers from watching your channel. I'm stoked to see the magic you bring to the GMC. I love the channel an plan on being a subscriber till my sight is gone gone completely. Keep up the great work an thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world through your RUclips channel! Keep On Keeping On Brother! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much for following along on this journey of nonsense!
Those fenders came out amazing. I could watch this type of work for days on end. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent.
Thanks Tom!
I love your content. Some people have a hard time telling if your being serious or if your being sarcastic. I get you!!
Haha thanks!
Once again a terrific self help instructional video on metal working. Young people starting out SHOULD LISTEN TO YOU AND WHY YOU DO IT A CERTAIN WAY.
Well done
Thanks John! Does that mean I'll have to start listening to myself too? Haha
@@CarterAutoRestyling you get the best advice from listening to yourself
Let’s go-glad you’re back in action!
Yukon Fast Food! Awesome!😸
Welcome Back Kyle! My panels are slowly rotting into the ground! Without your tutelage, I was getting ready to break out the pop rivets and window screen! 😆 Always a treat!
pop rivits and window screen has my full endorsement!
10K 👍I searched nearly every day looking for more on those fenders.
Thanks Paul!
They let you out early for good behavior.....dude I figured you said hell with you tube...man its good to see you brother man
Haha thanks Todd!
Thanks for sharing Kyle,, 👍🌟👍
Just like coal can become diamonds you've became a 10,000 strong U TUBER ! I once knew a coal miners daughter ! PS please don't put me in for the lic plate I'm waiting for the GMC truck lol Keep on keeping on cheers .
Thanks Lonnie, more Gmc action coming soon!
Glad to see you! I had called Canadian 911 to report a missing person, they put me in touch with Dudley Do-Right who said he was sure you were kidnapped by Snidely Whiplash. Dudley said he was sure he could locate you and return you safely! Must be a man of his word! Being an old guy that only had oxy acetylene for metal work your method makes complete sense. Cary on...
Hi Kenny! Thanks for helping me get rescued! If it wasn't for your inquiry I'd have been lost forever!
Bout time .... the fenders look amazing ..... your the metal wizard ..... I think the story at the end was a test ....and yes I watched the whole thing ... just want to remind you to the fact that I was with you from the start .... not that I'm trying to influence you in the give away ..... but who wouldn't want one of those mighty fine plates .... and I'm still looking forward to winning the jacket ....welcome back and am looking forward to more great videos .....
The jacket is the real prize for sure haha!
I'm a year late to the party, but I love to see and hear different techniques. Certainly worth a try to see if it works for me. "Group Think" is stifles creativity and new ways of doing things.
Not seeing a new video for a month I was getting worried. Nice work as usual!
Don't ya hate when bills get in the way of free time? Haha. Keep killing it man.
It's a struggle for sure, I'm glad I'm not the only one who owes money to multiple people named bill haha
Just to be clear....I would watch you mowing the lawn! Keep up the good work. Good luck with your glue sniffing issues LOL. Cheers from Ontario!
More yard care and glue sniffing coming soon!
Good to have you back.
Thanks Bruce!
Kyle...Like the old song goes "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'...but you persevere and always see a project through with stellar results. All the best, Kelly
Thanks Kelly! Perseverance is the key to achieving moderate levels of success in life
Dude i look for your new videos everyday for one your badass at what you do and another reason you always come up with some crazy azz content that makes me laugh...keep doing what you do young man and always be a subscriber..
Hope oneday you have a hundred thousand subscribers.
Good to see you again. Hope your getting close to sharing work on 48 GMC pickup with us.
Oh I am! Thanks
The fenders look great Kyle! A lot of hours go into refurbishing old tin, but when you can't buy replacements, you have to fix what you have. Great lead work too! Look forward to the 48 work.
Thanks Ken! I'm definitely looking forward to the 48 too.
Hi Kyle I thought those pesky Cold War guys must’ve broken your legs or something for taking one of there priceless pieces of iron 😂take it easy mate 👍🏼🇳🇿🍺😎
Hi Gav! The Cold war motors guys are pretty upset with me for taking one of their jewels, but so far no broken legs!
You have been missed ! Actuly watch all episodes ower and ower agien =) Dan in Sweden,
Hi Dan! Thanks for watching!
@@CarterAutoRestyling I aculy got some ideas on the welding to! Is thera any diferens in on the weld depenging in witch gas you use , Argon / mixed / co2 ?? Yers ago i did welding Mag on A trucking company , and we could drill and tap the welds whitout any problem ( A big f,,,n weldwer and some od wire) seems like the welds was softer , And how about ceping the sheet metall varm wile weldin (preheting??) could it help ?? //Dan
@@koddington I use 75/25 argon C02 gas with the mig. Straight C02 makes the weld harder. Sheetmetal is so thin that pre heating isn't neccesary.
God bless free Alberta
No surrender
OMG! Sound guy is working for you again.
He's safely chained up in the studio
I find your videos very informative. I put old cars and trucks back into serviceable condition, and I do all my own work requirements, as I enjoy it. I have learned a great deal watching your vids. To put that into perspective, I am 75 years old and 100% disabled. I will continue to watch your videos, even if I have to wait a bit. I hope you will be successful financially, as you deserve to be rewarded. Good luck, son.
Thank you Jim!
Outstanding work!! keep doing what you're doing. it's honest, it's organic and the results are always amazing. That old man Worthington sounds like a real jerk!!
Thank you, he was a jerk, but he had to be...that coal wasn't going to mine itself!
So great to see ya back
Wow, those fenders look amazing, thank you for sharing this mig technique, I’m gonna try it. Congrats on your 10K subs and thank you for mentioning Scott at Cold War Motors. Started watching him and the guys after you got your ‘48 from him, now I’m hooked. Cheers Kyle, glad to see you back!
Thanks Otis and I'm glad to hear you enjoy Coldwarmotors!
You did a fine job on those fenders and I would be honored to have a Saskatchewan license plate. So much so that I will send YOU a Nevada plate. I have so much confidence I will receive it that I have already stolen one to send you.
Wow that's very thoughtful of you haha!
Congratulations on making 10k subscribers. It’s been a couple of months since your last video but the waiting was worth it those fenders are outstanding. Roll on the next instalment 👍🏴
Thanks for being one of the loyal subscribers! Hopefully there won't be such a long wait before the next video!
@@CarterAutoRestyling Kyle, thank you for your hard work and the entertainment.👍🏴
Awesome you're back! 👍
Good to see you back! You're one of my favorite body man channels. I can't wait to watch all the welding coming up.

Thanks! I'm pleased to say Allan has made a full recovery!

Glad you're back! Congrats on the 10,000. Great content Kyle!
Glad your back
The explanation of why you did what you did, in the order you do them really helps. I have wondered about spot welding one side then weld the other side fully to see how that would work out. Another great video Thanks
You're video are awesome you are a true craftsman fender show that all the best to you
Great job on the fenders, love the fact you want to save all the old cars they're not making any new ones so keep up the great work. Oh glad your back.
Thanks, we try to save as many as we can!
I quite enjoyed watching you explain and execute the process for welding and straightening those fenders to the point that I feel less intimidated to try and do some of that work myself. Keep up the good work and videos, you are a good teacher of the trade !
Thanks and I'm glad to hear some of this nonsense made repairing stuff a little less intimidating!
Yes please I want plate. I have to say I am always looking for new videos of your channel, love everything you are working on, i love the your beater trucks. I got lots of them.
Hi Dan, I'm glad to hear you enjoy beater trucks as much as I do!
I love to see you work through problems on these parts and cabs... as well as the skits... if anyone doesn't get it im sorry for them. CONGRATULATIONS ON REACHING 10,000 SUBSCRIBERS
Thanks, I'm really glad you enjoy the show!
Most people would throw those fenders on the scrap pile Kyle. Amazing
I always enjoy your videos! I can identify with your coal mining endeavor, I think we've all been there. As far as broadening the appeal of your videos, the obvious solution is babes. Get some dancing babes to be doing their thing while you work. Oh and make them hold cats, too.
Thanks for the suggestion, if you find any, send them my way! haha
Amazing work probably my favorite metal working channel
Wow thank you!
Those fenders are awesome! Fantastic Job on them. That was a touching heart warming story.
Glad you enjoyed the story haha

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for them!
So glad you’re no longer working in those incredibly dark and cold mines
