This dude just described my entire collection journey 😂 I wish I would’ve seen this 4 years ago! I’d say I’m in 3.0 right now, I moved 3 months ago and set aside all the duplicates and other titles I didn’t want during the time. Went back to actually playing through and beating all the titles I have. It felt way better and I got a badass trade!!
I couldn’t agree more with the philosophy of all killer, no filler. This stops the cycle of over buying and makes your game room way more enticing than a “complete” collection.
Lastly people get blinded by the museum style collection & display because of fancy videos!! Game rooms should be approachable and friendly, not 10 foot shelves and aisles of shovelware 😂 i could go on and on what a great video🤘🤘this dude gets it

In 2010 I decided by design to be a serious "3.0" collector, only games I love from the past & the games I discovered later that fit my taste in games & genres I seriously see myself enjoying. Nothing more, nothing less, zero filler & a vastly more realistic goal that's attainable.

The accuracy of this video is crazy! I’m in Collection 2.5, still trying to control the urge to buy anything and everything, but it has gotten significantly better. Anything I haven’t played, I only buy at a really good deal, so that if I don’t enjoy it, it goes into a trade pile for something I know I want. I also found that instead of buying games that I’m not sure of, I tend to enjoy saving up for a CIB console, because they are really cool to look at and you can relive that Christmas morning feeling if you want to unbox it and set it up to play.
I also find that everdrives and sd card mods really help cut back. It’s a cost effective way to try games you haven’t played and test out grails before you drop big bucks on them. It essentially has really helped me to only keep absolute favorites for my collection, because I can still scratch the itch anytime I want to play something different.

What epic timing! I have almost 5000 games alone. Let alone collectibles, CIB consoles, toys, etc. Almost 2 weeks ago I decided that I'm done. I want my life back. Money could be placed into more important things. Space could be used for something else that i will actually use instead of a dusty museum.
I'm selling everything in my basememt rec room to condense it down into a single small bedroom. I have no idea how i will do it but it has become apparent that I need to for my mental health. FOMO can stick it. Its no longer fun, it turned into unnecessary pressure on myself to have the biggest and best collection. And I had never intended on that.
Thanks! I needed the reassurance and support apparently. 3.0 here I come!

Great video! Collection 3.0 feels like the most fulfilling way to enjoy games. I’ve parred down significantly to one or two live service games (RuneScape and whatever else I’m feeling at the time haha) and a small physical collection of games that mean a lot to me:
    - 30 Gamecube games that I always wanted as a kid (some childhood games, but mostly stuff I rented or wanted back then)
    - Softmodded PSP for when I wanna try something new (got this after the GameCube as a kid and enjoyed a ton of cool PS1 games this way)
    - Boxed copies of the “third release” Gen 1-3 Pokémon games (my adult grail) and a GBA flashcart.
It’s insane to collect any and everything I tried and as I get older the reality sets in that it’s just stuff and you will probably never find time to actually enjoy all the stuff you have collected. The stuff I have no nostalgia for is fascinating but is more a novelty than anything.

Great video! 3.0 is definitely a strange stage to be in but it feels so much healthier. I’m now super selective (compared to what I used to be) about what I pick up and it has to be something that truly excites me! I’m on this odd kick that I love of picking up the Japanese versions of iconic N64 and SNES games. Over the last several months I have sold off a big chunk of my collection. I miss the idea of having a big $$$ collection, but it’s more curated and enjoyable now.

I semi-recently got it in my head that going for a full original Xbox set would be a good and fun idea. A couple days ago I looked at my shelves and thought what the hell am I doing? I do love that system, but it’s like 85% games that don’t actually mean a thing to me. I’m going to sell most of it, buy a few Xbox heavy hitters that I really do want, and put the rest in my pocket. I can easily get fixated on stuff like this and it kind of gets away from me. I’ve been spending more time looking for games online than I do playing them. Good video, and a healthy reminder for some of us.

I’m starting a video game collection. However I am being specific and thematic.
    1. Choose a manufacturer (my case PlayStation)
    2. Pick specific genres (mine: platform, racer, fighter, RPG & Shooter)
    3. Collect ONE favorite game from each genre in the manufacturer’s console catalog (I’m starting with ps2 & ps3)
So my definitive collection so far are:
    PS2
    Platform: Jak & Daxter
    Racer: Midnight Club 2
    Fighter: Tekken 5
    RPG: Dark Cloud
Shooter: Grand Theft Auto Vice City
    PS3
Platform: Sly Collection (yes it’s cheating)
    Racer: Modnation Racers
    Fighter: Mortal Kombat 9
    RPG: Deus Ex Human Revolution
    Shooter: Uncharted 2
My belief is to curate a collection of favorite games. The best of the best. Some unfortunate games will be left out. But the favorites still remain.

We are constantly working towards 3.0
Since we did the purge video series and can't even remember what we got rid of we realized just how much filler we actually have. It was eye opening.
Another great way to pair down is to get rid of duplicates on another console. This is something I struggle with especially when it comes to survival horror.
At the end of the day in 2023 i consider myself much more of a gamer then a collector. I just want to enjoy what i have.

I started video collecting this year. I've collected things before (toys, books, etc) so I know how important it is to keep a clear goal and not over spend. Space, money and time, afterall. I decided to only collect Mario games starting with the switch. I will try to 100% the games before buying the next ones. Or at least finish story mode and then go back to 100%. Some games can be tough and frustrating at times and collecting items can be boring grinding. So it's very important to have fun too and take breaks or just stop if you're not having fun.
I chose Mario since I have fond memories of playing with my older brother.

Sometimes I feel like “Collection 2.0” is somewhat important since you can only experience how bad it is instead of people telling you how bad it is, so you can genuinely think about what really matters to you. Also I feel like many people have gone through the collection 2.0 phase especially retro gamers trying to buy games in the 2000s when game prices were so low.

I have broad interests in different games, so I have a large game collection. I'm sure other collectors probably have some of the same stuff and just see it as filler, but I don't. I've always researched and curated. But I never really understood why it is in video games many consider so much to be "filler", but so little to be essential. While most essential lists are roughly the same games every time. Variety is the spice of life, I enjoy having a lot of different stuff in the game collection.

I think I'm just gonna just chalk it all down to keeping only nostalgia/memory related stuff and games I REALLY want to play.... anything I sold that I find I want to play later I'll just get it again. Thanks man great video

  • @DoYouNerd

There are some fun exercises here; the memory one would be nifty to try out for sure. I've gone through so many stages of collecting in my life, starting over multiple times, that I'm at the point where I'm kinda numb; like it doesn't feel like too much stuff, but I'm also never out there desperately looking for anything. I've got that personal holy grail, so I'm good there. I'm not influenced by RUclipsrs on what to buy and I never have a response to the classic convention question of "what are you looking for." It's all just this weird grey area that I live in and dogs think is so colorful. ha ha
I do like your final message in making memories; one of our biggest flaws is that we do not make the time to play games...buuuut, anybody who knows us knows we're constantly doing stuff and, well, making memories. We balance out living in the moment and collecting those memories, in picture and video form so that we can look back and not have to rely solely on our brains. Which, full circle, is why the memory game with games would be fun to try because my brain? Yeah...

You mentioned that some games are too rudimentary to replay. I've noticed that everyone has a different level of tolerance for older games. Some people won't play anything except for current generation consoles. Other people go back to GameCube, but think N64 is too old because of the blocky graphics. Then there are others who don't play NES because they think it's too primitive, while Some NES fans won't play anything made before it. I'm a person who likes every console generation. Playing older games doesn't bother me. I still find some Atari 2600 games to be playable. I also think NES can be appreciated by hardcore gamers who like difficult games.
