They interviewed some of his editors for the upcoming my hero movie and one of the questions was "what surprised you most when you started working for horikoshi" and one of them said that there was a day before a deadline for preliminary sketches, and Horikoshi would have just blank sheets of paper. The editor thought "there's no way he's gonna have something ready for tomorrow" then Horikoshi would come in the next day with 19 1/2 finished pages

To be honest his art is what got me started when I was younger. I started by trying to imitate his style, but then over the years I started to do my own thing. I really liked his style's use of more accurate anatomy. Since that's what I liked, it helped me develop my style where that leans away from cartooniness in the anatomy. Eventually though that applied to faces too and while the eyes are still a bit stylized, I tend to draw pretty defined noses and lips depending on the character. Finally since quite a few of my characters have wavier or full on curly hair I learned to draw it in a way that suited my style. Something can't be learned as much from manga art. I learned some methods from other artists, experimented until I found the ones that clicked best for me for each level of curl or coil.
I always wanted to draw more characters with that sort of hair since that is the hair I had as a kid, very curly to the point of being in little coils. It turn into being heavily wavy but with a lot of volume nowadays as an adult but I still draw these kinds of hair styles a lot. They often take longer than straight haired characters but it often ends up looking really beautiful.

What I love most about his drawings are how round they feel, like you said he builds a lot of dimension with the direction of shading, and their limbs and things seem solid, like they have real weight and substance, which I feel like you don’t always see a lot of in manga.
