Coffee Bay & Hole in The Wall South Africa Wild Coast

  • Coffee Bay, at the heart of South Africa's Wild Coast is a strange kind of place. There are no "facilities" as such, no shops other than spaza shops, some basic backpackers and pizza joints, but we managed to find a decent guest house which was awesome. The village is somewhat spoilt by the abundance of rubbish lining the streets, and beaches. Which is a pity, because it has so much potential. But it's still a wonderful place to visit, and it absolutely oozes character.
The Hole in The Wall is a must visit, we were told that the road was terrible and only passable in a 4x4. Which is incorrect, there is maintenance on the go and it can be done in a normal car. The informal "guides" can be a problem, I found that a firm but friendly approach was the way to go. It's a spectacular natural wonder, I highly recommend it.

I’m not jealous at all😂 You’re in for a treat, and your vehicle will handle the roads with ease.

Oh my, totally agree with this! One time, yes, especially if you're a hiker, but would I go again? Not really no haha. The road from St Lucia was very tiring for us, because of all the speed bumps, for hours and hours, with people waiting around them to see if you would break anything at your car. That made it a terrible long road, in my opinion. If it wasn't for those, the road would have been better. (no warning signs either, the paint wasn't there anymore, the bumps looked exactly like the road, surprising us all the time)

There was quite a bit of work being done on improving roads, so we must hope that will continue.

Pity about the filth nowadays, beautiful place, beaches used to feel very remote and secluded.

@@teddy.nkosi3 I probably would go back if the circumstances arose, but realistically it's unlikely, new adventures to be had and all that ✈

I agree with you. I was there over the weekend from the 4th May 2024 to the 6th May 2024. Those informal tour guides are irritating. They are so persistent and makes your visit unpleasant.
