Interesting thing about the Salton Sea: A long time ago, it was the northernmost tip of the Gulf of Baja! Over eons the Colorado River dumped sedimentation into the sea creating the Imperial Valley. Now you know!
We found it generally safe, particularly near the Visitor Center. If you make your way to Bombay Beach, you might find that a bit sketchy. You can spend a day driving around the lake and exploring nearby areas.
