Its heartwarming to see this video not only for us, but also for her children and grandchildren to look back on how to make an important traditional dish that connects family together in Tet holiday.
My thoughts exactly. As much as I dislike technology sometimes, I actually think it has the ability to preserve cultures and stories that previously had to be passed down orally
This is such a labor of love. I am Cambodian and we make this as well. One year, I woke up at 2am to help my mother in law make a huge batch of these but different varieties (pork, banana, and coconut+mung beans). It was for the temple celebrating our version of day of the dead. My MIL expected me to go and get blessed but girl, I done went back to bed after 10 hours of this. Sleep was my blessing 😂
My parents are both gone and I don't get to see my aunties very often. Hearing your mom's voice reminds me of my childhood and listening to my mom and her sisters cook and gossip in the kitchen❤
Had no idea this took so much effort to make, I’m impressed by the whole banana leaf section of this recipe. Thanks for sharing this traditional recipe with us! Looking forward to part two!
My family is from Hong Kong we have something similar called Zongzi made up of glutinous rice, mung beans, and we enjoyed meat, pork, chinese sausage and egg yolk fillings, wrapped in bamboo leaves in a cone shape. My grandmother is the one that always make it and over the years me and my siblings start to learn how to make it.
In my country it is called bakchang.. similar one i think.. the simplest one here is sticky rice with ground meat filling. Can be pork or chicken for those who cant eat pork.
Banh chung (Vietnamese: bánh chưng (餅蒸), Chinese: 越南方糉) is a traditional Vietnamese dish made from glutinous rice, mung beans, and other ingredients, and eaten for Lunar New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán/農曆元旦節 or 春節).
Thank you for sharing these recipes. I always wanted to learn how to make Vietnamese food from my mom, but she passed away before we had the chance to really reconcile. Vietnamese food always reminds me of her and the way food was how she showed her love for her family. Thank you, always.
I can’t wait to see the finished product! It definitely is a lot of work, but I think it’s so awesome that you’re cooking and learning these recipes with your mom ❤ I need to do that more with my mom.
Okay now I feel bad for woofing it down so quickly 😢now that I see the process I'll eat slower and savor each bite. So sweet of your Mom to take the time to teach you! I love your channel and how family oriented and real you are❤

I appreciate this video so much because when my mom tried teach me I gave up like this is too over the top for me. With that being said this yr I will be paying $28 for a banh chung ❤ happy tet
There is two different versions (at least from what I know of) - bánh chưng and bánh Tết. Bánh chưng is square and more eaten in the North of Vietnam and bánh Tết is cylindrical and more common in Central and Southern Vietnam. Same ingredients, just different name and shape.

Hi they young lady, I don't suppose you have a fool proof way of making rice noodles, the ones that you do like crepes but then can slice however thick or thin you want. I tried to make some for a Pho I made the other day and I failed.
@@lisamckay5058 this year the banana leaves's price went higher, idk the reasons honestly, so u should expect those might go even double the price when they're exported overseas
This technical is use so much bananas leaves, it’s any better way to do it because it will cost more than $20 for this bananas leaves to use just one bánh chưng

what no !! i wanna see it all in this vid!!....peace out
Dang. That's some work. Are the banana leaves reusable? Or is it a one and done?
It's pretty much one and done, but they're biodegradable since the wrap is made of plant.
@@aznmochibunnythanks! I was thinking about the time spent cutting and cost of the leaves. Are they expensive?
@@lisamckay5058 pretty affordable!I found fresh leaves at smart and final this year for $4, or you can hit up the Asian and/or Mexican market!

Thịt 5 chỉ is just pork belly with 5 layers of fat and meat
Im confused what do u mean when u say full in length, both banana leaves looked the same to me pls re explain using illustration
That is too many banana leaves. Time consuming. No, thank you I just wrap the old-fashioned way faster and easier
