I have this. I've found it is worse when I'm physically uncomfortable. The groans are louder, more frequent, more intense. I think it is a soothing mechanism that I subconsciously make. The vibrations in my throat tend to make me feel good and are soothing. I obviously don't intend to make those loud noises when I sleep, my partner does not like them, but I think I do it when I don't feel well and it soothes me.

I definitively have this, and it began around puberty. I'm now 27. I thought for years I was weird and crazy and I used to be so embarrassed with potential partners and sleeping. I never knew what it was. Everyone who ever heard me told me I definitely didn't snore, and it only happened on my exhales. It was very common for me to start up right after the light in my head turned off, and would happen on and off throughout sleep. Still is my pattern to this day. Digging into some research as I was older, I finally came across this name, and everything clicked. I always sounded like a zombie or slightly sexual in nature, everything ticked off the checklist. I wasn't crazy--I'm just rare.

I wish there was more research and information on this. I feel like catathrenia negatively impacts my quality of sleep but I can rarely find information on how to treat the issue. Thanks

I’m so close to evicting my boyfriend because of it so I can see how it could literally land people on the streets. Wax ear plugs and a noise machine don’t stop it waking me and he REFUSES to use his BiPap

I've had this condition since birth, or at least since I was very young, according to my parents. They weren't sure what it was and thought it was just a disorder. Now at 35, I understand it poses no health risks aside from socialization challenges. I avoid overnight stays with friends to spare them the discomfort caused by my condition. The situation worsened, and my wife's frequent complaints led me to purchase a CPAP machine. Adapting to the mask took time, but I no longer snore or moan. This is just my experience; I couldn't visit a sleep lab for testing. It was a leap of faith for me, but it worked. Now, both my wife and I are happy.

I think I have this. Have had multiple sleep studies that come up with nothing. I recently got my deviated septum fixed thinking that may help my sleep but literally last night I couldn't sleep for hours because every time I got to the point of finally falling asleep I groaned and woke myself up. 🥴

I feel you I don’t really now if I have this but the other night the sound woke me up and I was really scared because I almost felt like if someone else made the sound I’m not someone who snore ,but that moment was the first time that I actually heard it and last night I got an app that literally records the sounds while you sleep and that sound showed again which is really creepy 😓

LOL! I have this issue. Never had the name for it but my husband has to shake me to make me stop.
I have done it all of my life.
I have heard myself do it a few times. It’s not a snore. It’s more of a groaning. I am using my vocal cords and it isn’t coming from my breathing.
I feel bad for my poor husband who has had to listen to me do this for nearly 30 years. It’s funny and sad at the same time. He has to wear ear plugs because of me.
I wish there was a way I could stop it but as far as I know I think I have been doing this all of my life. My brother made fun of me when I was little because of it calling it snoring but it isn’t snoring. I have had two sleep studies and both where fine. So I really feel it is just a vocalization. Sometimes it is worse then others. Either it could be when I am not feeling good or when I have had a bad dream or even a bad day. Hard to tell exactly when I am not conscious to ask.

I sound like a demon! I fell asleep earlier and recorded a three hour nap. My god, it was terrifying! And sounded like two voices toward the end! I'm really freaked out. It started in 2015 for me. I'll wake myself up all the time. It interferes with my breathing, so I think it's why I always wake up exhausted.

I am here because my partner just recorded me and says i do this almost nightly. Sometimes i am vaguely aware i am doing it but it sounds like a consistent hum or groan (until i listen to it back) in reality its a garbled mess or yes.. moaning *face palm* I have severe anxiety and to me it feels somewhat comforting .. kinda like creating my own 'white noise' lol

I was shaken til I woke up by my ex one night. She thought I was having a sex dream. I had no idea what was going on. Majority of the time when I sleep I don’t have dreams. She didn’t believe me. I’m thinking it’s from me being really exhausted from work. Sometimes I catch myself doing it after randomly waking up. And I start to do it lightly as I’m falling back to sleep. The incident with my ex was the first time that I know of me doing it. That was 3 years ago. It’s inconsistent, at least I think it is. It’s almost 4am, i just caught myself doing it as I was falling back to sleep. And I just now decided to look it up. 🥲

Satisfying to hear you say it feels somewhat comforting - like white noise. I thought the same, i faintly hear it sometimes when my wife suddenly wakes me by talking to me at the end of one of my ‘groans’. It’s slightly embarrassing but let me Catathrenize, jeez.

I’ve been making a weird sound in my sleep recently. It sounds like I’m yelling without opening my mouth with a lot of voice cracks in between. Is there any way to stop this? Every time it happens (only 3 times so far) I have a nightmare and I make the exact sound in the dream and wake up to it so that’s how I know what it sounds like. My mother and father has also been woken up to me making this demon like sound.

I had this growing up together with sleep talking/walking and teeth grinding. This is why I don't like sleeping with friends. My partner or my mother always wakes me up whenever they hear me moan in my sleep saying I must've had a bad dream. I had an incident where I slept at work cause I was so tired and my co-workers were waking me up all of them heard me and ask why I was moaning. This usually happens when I'm tired and lacks sleep.

    • @acjohn6995
      @acjohn6995 Год назад +2

@@nikribble If you're clenching your diaphragm, it doesn't sound like apnea. Feels like it's more of a phrenic nerve issue. It's worse when I eat before bedtime, especially sugar. Research has shown that people hold their breath or take very shallow breaths when working on the computer under stress, everybody today doesn't breath deeply enough due to stress.

i have this disorder and mine sounds very sexual. definitely moaning and not groaning. my family never told me. it was my roommate in college who sent me a video and i was HORRIFIED. no ever since ive been afraid to sleep around men… lol (but actually not funny at all). my grandmom also has it, but hers sounds more like high pitched groaning. and now my four year old niece has it 🩷 sounds like a long little hum.
