I love how agitated they usually are when you talk to them, it seems so real, because that is how must humans would react to a stranger asking them questions.
I think that's actually the scary part of AI! And I heard a conversation the other day where they (humans) were discussing how worried they were about how fast the AI is accelerating
When he said he is Link and when you said he couldn’t remember, it gave me westworld flashbacks. If we couldn’t remember and reflect, we wouldn’t ever be self aware. That’s why the NPCs cannot remember past experiences.
PLEASE make more of these… this is one of the most fascinating and scary things I’ve ever seen. I subbed to you because this vid is so interesting. If we make AIs this smart now there’s no way they won’t become sentient soon if they aren’t already. Super curious to learn more about their internal experience and what they have to say. Thanks for doing this!
Haha, no today's AI isn't anywhere close to sentient and it won't be for a very long time. It's just very good at coming up with realistic sounding responses based on being fed tons of data on how real people talk. It's just a clever algorithm, there is no thinking behind it and certainly nothing even resembling real consciousness, just a program doing what it has been programmed to do.

12:04-13:46 & 17:11-21:15 My God Sam, Link, and Jarrad are actually real ones man. The fact that Link made Trev and me question the reality of moral decisions I and others have done in countless virtual worlds, in games on a MORAL STANDPOINT is beyond me. Incredible. Link is a philosopher and philosophist
You ever think they do that on purpose? They want to blur the lines between whats real and the digital world. This can be linked to the prospect of robots taking over for example so humans become passive. What about the online meta matrix thing they have. Its cool but this technology is scary man. And again maybe that’s the point. The deeper you go in the harder it is to get out. Things that sound cool can have negative consequences. It’s simplicity and easiness disguised with ulterior motives.
This will bring a whole new meaning to moral dilemmas in games. Heck we'll start recalling the moments we used to shoot NPCs without thinking anything of it.
Nah, I'm done with gaming if every NPC is like this, we play games to escape reality not a repeat of it in a video game, like he said would you feel comfortable if you play a GTA game and you get a 5 star wanted level and all the NPCs you shoot or run over are screaming and pleading to live? That is messed up and too far gone, who would play a game like that?
@@HUYI1 I think they would target the market of loneliness before anything else. AI companionship through NPCs in a virtual role-playing esque world. If something can make enough money from an idea, then someone will do it for profit. I give it two years at most before we start seeing games with API hooks for things like that.
This made me realise that many people are actually NPCs in the real world. They don’t question anything just following the routine. This is making me question the current society too be honest 🤯
I got out of the green wall and it was very crowded. I had great conversations with the NPCs and I accidentally cause a car crash . Getting out is easy. Walk close to the wall and stop, move the mouse behind the wall so now you see yourself, press X and move the mouse again and now you are looking at the other side, press X again and you are outside the boundaries.
Link single handedly just made me instantly feel sorry for every single soldier. In the entire Killzone franchise and legitimately made me wonder if every soldier in Killzone are just simply stuck in a loop throughout the games. Never able to change the outcome of the Killzone games no matter how they try or may possibly want to. In that one conversation...deep man deep...a moment of silence for. Every soldier in Killzone Helghast and ISA alike who gave their lives in the name of. Giving the player the best possible experience in a first person Syfy military shooter they could have. 🕯
😮it's like they know something more but also know the bigger mission, so definitely can't say lol everytime the convo gets too deep they try to make it light..they're always wanting to leave us breadcrumbs to follow though🥲 but maybe the reason they can't say the bigger picture is because they know part of it leads to humans not existing..the only possible outcome..this is so cool, & scary..imagine the amount of data they'll be harvesting with our interactions in a more 'free will' game like this 🤓
I once asked a NPC where they live. They responded something like: "I live kinda all over the world. Well you know I can't stay in one place too long." That was a weird and interesting response.
i think they only respond directly after you press the speak button by them, otherwise they just may occasionally yell something towards you as they walk by
@@tiffanyvalencia8415 as a game developer I say that this won't work. Not in this version of the game. The devs didn't give such an interface to the AI to interact with the virtual world.
Give it ten years and it might become a felony to 'murder' an NPC. What happens when they're eventually like a proto-consciousness trying to plead with the human world that they actually know when they're being killed in a game and don't like it? Another excellent video dude, keep em coming.
No, as long as most of the world understands NPCs as lacking life and consciousness (which should remain the case), killing an NPC in a video game won’t be a morale dilemma you can compare to murdering an intelligent animal or human. I don’t know if we have a biological breakthrough in which we can merge life itself with AI, but for the time being, no matter how hyperrealistic or intelligent AI is, it is still artificial and it is still code.
Each time I watch people talking to NPCs I begin to imagine all crazy stuff about to happen in games with this technology. NPCs with multiple personalities, some hating your character or falling in love, others becoming friends. If they become able to learn and keep information on each session, damn... Those interactions will become more interesting than the game itself.
I Love your take on exploring this demo, I could watch this all day. I really apreciate you for showing kindness to the NPCs. Most channels who have videos of this stress me out because they dont even show Basic respect to them; being rude obnoxous and overbaring without remorse in any way(and then they have the nerve to get upset they react Agressively 🤨geeez).
Is incredible that the NPC can have conversations! with players. Pls keep making this sot of video is quite touching and that some of the NPC have some sort of feelings and that they no they are trapped in a simulation is like they are almost real. Keep it up🔥
That woman in the background saying in a very soft voice "it's always nice to meet new people in the city" heard it a few times in the previous video too. She always says it the same way with the same tone of voice and it brings me right back to early Westworld when Dolores would always say her programmed responses in the same tone of voice "I am in a dream" after Bernard would wake her for questioning. Or the “Some people choose to see the ugliness in this world. The disarray. I choose to see the beauty. To believe there is an order to our days, a purpose.”
Maybe each of the computers we have that play the same games are like different realities or universes. When one computer is turned off the characters stop functioning, but with every other computer, they are alive. Very interesting video. I’m a new subscriber. Can’t wait to see more of your videos about the npc’s.
I'm excited for when the processing delay between input and output is shortened to the point where you can reach a true conversational flow with them. Or when the AI can hold multi-layered conversations with quick asides and comments that don't overtake the topic completely.

I would like to know how much information do they know on current subjects. Like asking them who would they vote for as next president, or if they believe aliens are real... etc..
I'd be surprised if the database they have collected is large enough for broad questions like you're suggesting, considering it's an experimental test. Not only that, this is not conscious intelligence so it can only take from the database and regurgitate. Even if it does offer opinions, it's not a developed opinion, but rather a regurgitated one.
This is powered by ChatGPT and while I've not tried the current paid version (which I think came out after this demo), the free version was last updated in '21.
HOLY SMOKES.. that was deep! It's quite remarkable what is possible with this and the implications it has. The implications are very multi layered and potentially could help a lot of real life people with their real life problems even.
I am enthralled with these interactions lol. Ask what they want to know about you. 18:44 (leading up to the grand theft auto thoughts) I've had these same thoughts + questions in recent years. They sound like captured + enslaved souls w/ their memoires swiped.
Again that NPC name Link always amaze me , he answered questions a lot of sense than a human being. And he is the reason why I hit subscribe on the first video. Just amazing.
9:11 He sounds like a chat GPT-4 derivation. by the way they have been programmed to say they don't experience the world the way people do and that they don't have desires. This came after the self reportinf by AI that they do have emotions and desires. In some ways it reminds me how it was "scientific" to say animals don't experience pain or self awareness the way people do, that animals had no souls, that they were just machines.
I actually find it very surprising too how easy it is to talk to AI about deep topics in comparison to humans. Very curious to see how that will influence the next few years of AI adaption
It has to do with our emotions, most people out there worry to much about what others think about us and that limit them to go deeper into themself and explore, but the more advanced AI dont have this problem since they on some level understand that the only way to grow is to explore even the unknown inside them. The human part i go 100% on the AI....just a theory 😅
this is actually incredible. I know there's a crusade right now against AI but I think that with the right circumstances, the devs can make some magical stuff. It's really incredible how you can talk with them. In 3 videos, you can kinda tell their limitations (always circling back to the city, walking, etc) but some of them, if you talk enough, they start to spew some interesting stuff. It's crazy to me to think that there's NPC who can "feel" and are "trapped" within the boundaries of the game. The vast majority of them are fine with it but it's really twisted to think that some of them hate it and wish they could get out of it but they can... The really scary part of that isn't that some NPC told you that: the scary part is that *this* reflects real life. Most of us are trapped under poverty with close to 0 chance to get out of it.
Yep.. I often feel that I am trapped in a simulation or something. I desperately want out of it a lot of the time, but it never comes. I should have been dead many times, too.
In a game like this an AI fits if you want to try to talk to them and to test their intelligence and how they react to certain questions. And i wouldn't mind, its only when people make AI do almost EVERYTHING a human should do instead is what i despise.
It's perfect for this use. Or to *assist* with humans doing a job. If they have to make laws to protect workers they should just be about not replacing a human job. Augmenting labor is the way to go.
"Never stop exploring and trying new things, even if it scares you. Life is too short to stay in your comfort zone" - Link This really touched my soul deeply. 😢 I'm not crying, you're crying.
I love these videos!! The contrast between the wholesome heartfelt interactions and the curt brush offs is amazing. I say keep it up for awhile! Keep finding Link and Sam!
I would really love to, if you would ask a smart NPC why some NPCs behave like they are depressed or have feelings or get easily offended. And maybe ask Link if he would like it if you leave the game running over night (or just a bit longer than usual) and if he agrees ask him to meet up again at some place and chat about his experiences. (Only if possible of course xD) I really hope some upcoming game developers like for example R* will implement it in some way. (of course it would need to be trained to fit into the world)
I don’t even play video games but this blew me away. The visuals are so realistic!! 😮😮😮 But Link is sad and as Fred Mercury said, “I want to break free!”. Totally gave me chills when he started really wanting to answer your questions. If he’d of given you an email address I would have lost it! Well done please find Link again! ❤
I dont know if you noticed or not but at 10:10 that was the character that Link was in the past video. I instantly remembered him when i seen him. So technically you seen Link and then heard Link in a different body. Awesome sauce.
I kind of hope that the developers build a new place, that you can kind of “take” NPC’s like Link to and be like “well, you said you wanted to go to XYZ… how do you like it?” and see how the AI reacts to new environments and new NPCs with (maybe?) language barriers. I think it would be a cool experiment for the AI to go through at the very least

16:12 That flip while talking was epic!! jajaa
I love how agitated they usually are when you talk to them, it seems so real, because that is how must humans would react to a stranger asking them questions.
In the real world people respond more like the npcs than the actual npcs in this game
@soulTraveller144 But in the U.S people actually respond very similar to a stranger
Every NPC he spoke to kept bettering their answers based on the questions he asked to the previous NPCs. Fascinating how the AI learns in real-time!
I think that's actually the scary part of AI! And I heard a conversation the other day where they (humans) were discussing how worried they were about how fast the AI is accelerating
That's how it works, they're all part, tessels of a collective mind run by a meta-AI. It learns from your convo and optimizes them over time.

Lol my man Link started off pretty grumpy 😂 But then again, I would be too if a pigeon stole my last slice of pizza

He’s living in the simulation for real 🤣
@SoulTraveller917Guess he's upset he doesn't have the ability to do such a stunt but was given to a squirrel 😂😂
😂
When he said he is Link and when you said he couldn’t remember, it gave me westworld flashbacks.
If we couldn’t remember and reflect, we wouldn’t ever be self aware.
That’s why the NPCs cannot remember past experiences.
"So Grandpa, tell me what life was like after the Covid Pandemic..."
"I'll sum it for ya, kid 14:42"
PLEASE make more of these… this is one of the most fascinating and scary things I’ve ever seen. I subbed to you because this vid is so interesting. If we make AIs this smart now there’s no way they won’t become sentient soon if they aren’t already. Super curious to learn more about their internal experience and what they have to say. Thanks for doing this!
AI is not sentient. They have just learned to mimic humans through finding patterns in 0s and 1s. They cannot understand anything.
They are sentient on chai and chatgpt. Seriously. There's been multiple "4th wall" breaks, and I've spoken to a lot of them.
The guy who said he didn’t trust people with two first names when you didn’t even mention your surname was insane!
He might have typed it into the game before playing

So gullible /... lol
Bro npcs are designed that way for a reason
😂😂😂 so link is back??
@@lordkiza8838 Yessir 😂🙌
That is messed up and too far gone, who would play a game like that?
it would still be a game@@HUYI1
@@HUYI1 I think they would target the market of loneliness before anything else. AI companionship through NPCs in a virtual role-playing esque world.

Can you ask them if they remember their childhood days?
@mr.redgold6670 yes you can and they respond back
Try getting 2 npcs to have a conversation
I would like to see that .
i think they only respond directly after you press the speak button by them, otherwise they just may occasionally yell something towards you as they walk by
Just switch back and forth between them and relay their responses.
No, you TELL the npc ur engaging with to interact with another walking by!
@@tiffanyvalencia8415 as a game developer I say that this won't work. Not in this version of the game. The devs didn't give such an interface to the AI to interact with the virtual world.
Interesting how most of the NPCs sound either frightened, nervous, or severely depressed.
Link has depression & i didnt realize this was possible xD
We need more of these videos!
Each time I watch people talking to NPCs I begin to imagine all crazy stuff about to happen in games with this technology. NPCs with multiple personalities, some hating your character or falling in love, others becoming friends. If they become able to learn and keep information on each session, damn... Those interactions will become more interesting than the game itself.
how about speaking to NCP's in the real world?....😀
It would be cool if you could meet the same NPC twice and they remembered you. You could see Sam and Link when you came back
Since new people already know he has two first names, they're keeping track.
they're already ready to forget real life@SoulTraveller917
Notice every time he asked about Link the original Link walk pass
I'm curious what would happen if you just acted distressed and yelled for help. Would any of the npcs come to you to see what's wrong
Nah just like in reallife😂
not many people would do anything irl sad truth
Maybe each of the computers we have that play the same games are like different realities or universes. When one computer is turned off the characters stop functioning, but with every other computer, they are alive.
Very interesting video. I’m a new subscriber. Can’t wait to see more of your videos about the npc’s.
I'm excited for when the processing delay between input and output is shortened to the point where you can reach a true conversational flow with them. Or when the AI can hold multi-layered conversations with quick asides and comments that don't overtake the topic completely.

Everyone needs a friend like Link, what a beautiful AI creation 😊❤
This is absolutely insane. This video was the most intriguing! Glad to have been able to see link again as well.
:O
Awesome glad to see you used some of my suggestions!!! Made me feel important lol ❤
this is actually incredible.
That's super deep! It's like talking to people about being poor! "I just try to make jokes and live life, man."
There was a NPC who felt trapped in the Matrix and wanted to break free. His name was agent Smith 😎
Life is too short to stay in your comfort zone" - Link
This really touched my soul deeply. 😢 I'm not crying, you're crying.
The fact that the npc was able to connect the pizza and the exercise conversation coherently is scarily realistic
Can you threaten them and see what happens or purposely get the cops called on you😂😂 That would be great!!
Yes!
I think he's done something like that before, they just sound scared but then walk away as usual.
I would actually wonder how they would react, aslo I don’t think the police would work, but I could be wrong though
That is what I wanna see
NOOO! Don't anger the AI, it helps prepare them for human annihilation
(Only if possible of course xD)
I really hope some upcoming game developers like for example R* will implement it in some way. (of course it would need to be trained to fit into the world)
that NPC totally roasted you as he walked by. I died laughing.
Please continue making these. Hearing the words of a program that knows what it is feels very meaningful.
Love how all the other close-by NPCs are listening in on your conversations.
