Well done Ross. It is quite a challenging build especially as when our dexterity and sight decline. I built this model about 20 years ago when it was called Sainte Marie by Artesania Latina. I guess the name change was to avoid confusion with their Santa Maria model. I have been building sailing ships from scratch since I was 9 years old and find them an exercise in patience. My Sainte Marie had navigation lights and the rowing boat was stowed on the deck. A few small changes in the components as well. I see that the boat now is painted rather than stained which makes it look more authentic. I had never completed the boat after it fell from the shelf and broke some of the rigging. Now with Covid lockdowns here in Australia it has been an opportunity to finally complete it. I need to buy a glass case to protect it from dust and idle fingers. I see from your video that the photo instructions are now in colour and than is nice. The symbols for what you have to do for each stage of construction are, for the most part, well done. My instructions did differentiate for the varying adhesives ..... wood glue (PVA) indicated for the keel and frame and inner planking, contact glue for decking and outer planking and some Superglue (Isocyanate) for other elements. Rigging is always the difficult part especially the sequence and hand-sewing the sails takes patience. And well done for the foresight in making the video.
Nice work Ross. I'm currently building the same model and have commenced rigging. I agree with all your comments regarding the kit. I have done a couple of other Artesania kits and I think the quality could be improved. The current one was a gift so I had no choice! Happy modelling.
really nice work! I am also planning on taking the challenge and build me my first wooden ship. I plan on purchasing the Latina 1/41 Virginia American Schooner. I am placing my order here shortly and cant wait to start building. I have been in the RC hobby since 1985 and enjoy building balsa airplane kits from a small electric model to a 110cc gasoline model. I am a disabled Army veteran and just enjoying the time I have with my family and hobby. Well once again Sir really nice build you have there.
Thanks Michael. I'm sure you will enjoy building the Virginia. I looked at that one because, like the Marie Jeanne, it requires planking of the hull. The planking was challenging but the end result was most rewarding. All the best for your new build. Ross.
I'm hoping to convert mine to a general fishing boat as I don't like the tuna poles, and deck grid. Not something that I'd have seen in Scotland. I've beefed up the aft mast,
I've used ochre yellow for most of the masts, and blue for s😢😢ome spars, bowsprit and stern sprit in a dark stain aft mast is yellow with blue top, looks spiffy
Ive stained my sails with a quick wash in diluted acryllic paint. Looks authentic. lightly bound the edges with matching thread. Im stuck with wooden mast hoops, using coloured plain brass wire at the moment. There are some hoops from Amati, i use Amati for thread, got some nice 1mm black gloss. Billings paint kit i bought as a trial, not good. Quality
I really enjoyed your video! I am just starting to look into model boat kits. I'm obviously not starting here haha but I'm definitely saving this video because I'd love to make this boat one day. Beautiful! While I'm here commenting, do you have any good sites I should look for good beginner kits? My uncle, who passed away about 11 years, used to make them and I was mesmerized by them as a little one. I'm 22 now, and something just told me to start looking into it. And it works out that this is just the kind of hobby I would be into.
Hi Maria. So good you want to try making a model ship. The two big kit providers are Artesania latina and Billings boats. I have heard BB instructions are fairly minimal and Artesania aren't much better! I would suggest you don't start with one that requires planking of the hull as that is a difficult skill on your first try. You may even like to try making my model paddlesteamer, the Pevensey. This would be much easier than most kits and would give you practice at many of the basic skills. (and would be a lot cheaper). The plans are with my RUclips video for making the Pevensey and they are free. Good luck with your ship building! It's a great hobby.
Ross I just noticed that your model is 1/50 scale whereas the old build, when it was Sainte Marie, was 1/40 so as yours is slightly smaller so it would take more skill.
Thanks for your comments James. This was the first model ship I made. Since then I have made quite a few (and documented them all on RUclips - calros3). They are a legacy for my grandchildren. Model ship building is a great hobby (especially during lockdown).
Hi Ross. You did a great job on that ship, well done. I bought my 83 year old dad a wooden model ship called the " Mare Nostrum". It is also made by the company, " Artesania".I would like him to paint the model using Acrylic paints. In the instructions it says to use a coat of clear varnish first before painting. I found that strange and I was wondering if you sealed the ship with varnish before painting???. I hope this message gets through. Many Thanks
Hi, Great ship. I have a couple ships to build similar to this one. How do you apply the hull planks without breaking them while trying to bend them? Wet them? If so, how does the glue stick? Gary
I feel like you probably get this question a lot but what are some good model ships to start with my dad made model ships as a kid out of a block of wood he also did models like these as well and I would really like to learn as well any good model ideas
The big thing to check is whether a kit has its hull pre-made or whether you have to make the hull by planking over frames. Might be good to start with a pre-made hull kit, then move on to a more complicated one. Artesania latina grade their kits for complexity.
Looks great Ross. Thanks for the history on this ship too. 👍

Nice build Russ..You did a fine Job...She`s a beauty
Well done! A true museum quality model!
Thank you for sharing your experience building this model. .
Very useful tips - thank you!
Absolutely lovely!
Beautiful job
Dundee was the main source of ropes and nets, so many of these boats would sail up to Dundee from time to time for re rigging.
Very nice build!
Thanks for your video. I'll be taking your information on board. Thanks again.

Id like walnut for the trim and the fleshing table.
Nice model ship. I like it

It is available on both ebay and Amazon.
Thank you for sharing. Can I ask you if they come with the paints. I have only ever made half models and would love to make a full one. Thank you
The kits come with everything you need except paints and glues. (and tools). Acrylic paints are easy to get at a craft shop.
Thank you Carlos. You did a really nice job on this on! Hope I can make as good

No I didn't seal it first. The acrylic paint covered easily straight from the tube.
Many Thanks Ross.

Gary
Gently iron them with a steam iron to get them to shape. Cool down and glue. Alternatively use a soldering iron.
bonjour greement difficile a realise car manque d information genre plan carte ou site internet merci de me donner des infos si vous en avait
Do you still have the plans?
Красивая модель! 5+
Great gob waw
